    This is a super book that will not only increase you and your child's vocabulary, but will become a useful tool for your kids' writing assignments for school! I've had numerous writing assignments come home from my grade school kids that required rhyming and creative writing. This book came in SOOOOOO handy, it really gave us an advantage and allowed us to create more vivid stories than trying to come up with rhyming words instead of out of our over used and limited words off the top of our head. When in question, we reach for THE SCHOLASTIC RHYMING DICTIONARY!

    This book is a great book for any younger person intrested in writing poetry, songs, raps, and etc. I think that this book is very easy to use and understand. I know I have said that this book is mainly for kids, but I am 15 and I still use this book for a lot of peotry that I write for school. So basiclly it is a great book for most people to use. The book also has funny pictures in it to help you know what the word is. Overall this is a great rhyming book.

    With over 15,000 words, it has enough for an aspiring poet to be very useful without overwhelming a reader. Although more advanced poets should turn to Sue K. Young's other rhyming dictionary, The New Comprehensive American Rhyming Dictionary, it is perfect in a classroom. I originally bought this book from my 7th grade literature teacher and immediately found good use. For the past five years, it has been of great convenience and has been one of the books I keep at the side of my desk.

    When writing a poem for school assignments or merely to express my own emotional state, or convey a story, it has definitely come in handy. Although I am currently looking for a new, more comprehensive rhyming dictionary, this book is great for beginners.

    This is one of the best rhyming dictionaries around. I love the way it is organized. It also has all kinds of tidbit information in the front of the book that other rhyming dictionaries do not. there maybe larger desk versions of rhyming dictionaries but as far as pocket sizes go this is the best.

    It's important to mention, that this physically small dictionary has its limitations. The dictionary doesn't cover every aspect on rhyming. But it's not its generally purpose. The book will come in handy for those who want a fast rhyme (or half rhyme) to finish his/her lyrics in a good way. It also have some practical information on songwriting in general. I like this practical book for what it is. Even though it's small, its potential are huge!

    This is a handy book. It's small and easy to carry around and you can pretty often find what you're looking for in it. It's good if you're browsing for ideas and it has a small section on basic rhyming schemes and useful hints for beginner songwriters.
    There are some serious drawbacks though. The obvious one is that it's not very big and doesn't have all that many words. Another is that while it lists words in different tenses, it does for some reason not appear to have any words in plural listed. It has 16 rhymes for the word "star", but "stars" (or any words that rhyme, like cars, bars, etc.) is nowhere to be found.
    So while this is a handy book for the beginning lyricist, people who are really serious about songwriting should probably go for something more extensive.
    But then again, it's only 6 bucks. And for 6 bucks it's not a bad book.

    As a songwriter I found this of very little help. There are SOOO many more possibilities for rhyme in contemporary music that this book is really only good if you want to know the perfect rhymes for a word.

    not sure what people expect - this won't write your hit song for you. but i write poetry to a beat, and then, setting it aside for a few days, i try to look at it as someone who isn't me. then i approve it -- using this book. the cool thing is, when i'm improving it, i get ideas for completely different things. and the intro about shapping a piece of work is worth it alone.

    YO... ARE YOU SERIOUS? I CAN TELL THAT THIS AUTHOR IS A TRUE HIP HOP HEAD. IT SAYS ON THE COVER THAT THIS BOOK IS FOR RAPPERS,MC'S, AND DJ'S. GUESS HE DOESN'T KNOW THAT A MC IS A RAPPER, AND A DJ WHO USES THIS BOOK MUST OBVIOUSLY ALSO RAP. IF THE AUTHOR DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THOSE THREE WORDS HOW COULD WE EXPECT THAT HE WOULD WRITE AN ENTIRE HIP-HOP DICTIONARY WORTH A MINUTE OF MY TIME.

    I mostly write rap, but I also cover other styles, and found this to be great for my hip-hop tunes, and for my other songs, too. It's versatile enough to cover all genres, and is really easy to find stuff quickly. I also like the tips in the front of the book, and the book is small enough for me to stick in my gear bag.

    This book makes it so easy to write lyrics. I've tried other rhyming dictionaries and they are too convoluted. This is one of the best out there.

    Of the many rhymning dictioaries I own, The Oxford is among the best.
    Not only end rhymes with one or two-syllables, but a decmil system for finding words with three syllables and beyond that rhyme.

    This fine publication is a splendid addition to my reference library! With over 85,000 entries, it is the most comprehensive rhyming dictionary I have ever seen. Using this reference work for rhyming words is great not only for poets, but for anyone who wants to add more innovation and fun to his writing. I especially like being able to choose from "strong" rhymes or rhymes that are less strong. It is easy to use because of the extensive index where one begins as he searches for that prime rhyme. Use it at teatime, playtime, showtime, dinnertime, springtime or any time! Use it in health and wealth!

    I bought this about 3 months ago in the midst of a particular writing project. I fully expected that it would end up unused on the shelf, like many of my reference purchases--to my surprise, I still use it and really find it helpful. I first found the layout a little confusing (look up the word and then refer to numbered entries), but the more I used it the more I realized that it is really helpful (particularly in finding "near-rhymes").

    I have also used a couple of online rhyming dictionaries, which, while helpful, aren't nearly as complete.

    I don't reach for rhymes in a book very often, but when I need to, this volume gets the job done. That's all I ask for!

    I've had two over my lifetime, and this one is all I can really ask for when it comes to 'cheating'. It even teaches you obscure words - most of which would never be chosen - that rhyme with what you're looking for with definitions.
    With a dictionary, I find it helpful to step back and remind myself of what I'm trying to write before I start jamming rhymes in that sound silly later. So I try not to use it, but it certainly helps a lot from time to time.

    I bought the book way back in a London book-shop. I had to climb down the narrow stairs to the basement and ask where I could find a rhyming dictionary. A nod sent me to the remotest corner. Halfway, a voice from behind suddenly said: "The Penguine is the best." I don't know whether the people in this place worked on commission - if so, they sure lost money on that day, because the man was right!

    I found and compared some 5 or 6 weighty and expensive dictionaries and an ugly duckling: Ms Ferguson's excellent listing. It is comprehensive, it is easy and quickly accessible, it never let me down in all these years. I had found THE tool for the professional translator of poetry. 5 stars and beer for everyone! That's the good news.

    However: the only available edition is a typical Penguin production: tiny letters, lousy paper, shoddy binding - yes you guessed it, I am a snob when it comes to paperbacks, but I especially hate the Penguin way of producing books. And this here is a DICTIONARY for crying out loud!! It requires by definition sturdy boards and good paper and an easy to read typeface to weather rough handling and ceaseless thumping for never ending months and years of work. 1 star and an aspirin.

    But then - on balance, this is the publisher's sly way to make you buy several copies I guess, and you know what: it is worth it. Fergusson's dictionary has been my indispensable companion for many years now. Perhaps we owe Penguin even a debt of gratitude, that they produce it at all ... .

    I had heard that a rhyming dictionary existed, but never could find one, until I stumbled on this one while on vaction. It is everything I hoped it would be. It's easy to use and just plain fun. Anyone who enjoys words, particularly the sound of words, won't be able to put this book down. It expands the possibilities of poetry. Who would have tnought that "debonair" rhymes with "musketeer?"

    Burges Johnson offers a basic rhyming manual for poets. The first 65 pages or so gives examples of various forms of meter and fixed styles of poetry. So if you wish to remember what trochaic hexameter looks like, you can find it here. The examples are of standard European lyric poems: Sonnet, Ballade, Chant Royal, Villanelle, Limerick, Rondel, Sestina, etc. There are no examples of Asian styles like Haiku.

    The rhyming dictionary is organized by vowel sounds with the most basic sounds like ATE, IN, OW, EAR listed first and then more complex combinations listed toward the end. The listings contain simple words, so the rhymes will not have unique combinations. But it is still a great start if you find yourself stuck after the third ATE (pate, mate, gate...).

    My main issue with the book is that it's a bit difficult to flip through. There are times where I will think a sound should be listed under OO and it's under EW. Also, because the simple sounds are seperated from the multi-syllable sounds, you'll have a break in the alphabetical listing. It requires a lot of flipping back and forth.

    All in all, it's a handy reference which saves time.

    It's useful enough for a beginner, but then again, so is a website like www.rhymezone.com, which this book feels a whole lot like...the entries are standard-fare; nothing extraordinary.

    The ~$12 price is fair, and I'm afraid that's all which can be said about this title.

    I do a lot of translation/versifying and this book is an incredible tool. Far from being a crutch, it opens the mind to new possibilites of rhyme, which, once internalized, can be called up from memory without looking back to the book. In short, this book TEACHES you versification skills through exposure to rhymes. It also contains an extensive discussion of rhyming form and technique with examples. A must have for the serious formalist.

        I spent about six months updating Words to Rhyme With for the most recent (2006) edition; this gave me an opportunity to get acquainted with Mr. Espy's brilliant command of rhyme, and his unfailing ability to inject humor into his poems. Anyone who delights in the sounds of English will find this rhyming dictionary a joy to have around. The organizational scheme is slightly more challenging than you will find in some other products, but learning how to use it will reward you with new insights into sound patterns in English. The real bonus of this book are Mr. Espy's poems, which are scattered randomly throughout the book.

        This book is engaging--not merely words in a list. And the accompanying poetry is fantastic and witty. Espy loves the language and this shows plainly in this great volume.
