5 out of 5 stars Aye its Brilliant! .......2005-01-02

This book combines many different fields such as geography, history and society necessary to provide the reader with a holistic peek through a globe-like linguistic window into modern Scots.

It is intended for readers with a "moderate knowledge of the intricacies of linguistic theory and terminology." (vii) However it often provides an explanatory paragraph, which is just as easy to skip and so lends itself to a braod audience. Furthermore it accommodates an appendix which provides the sounds and symbols of Scottish based on the International Phonetic Alphabet and is appreciated for easy reference.

The suggested readings and supplementary readings that span the ages are of course only as valuable as you have access but is a good characteristic and clearly shows depth of reading and preparation.

The aims set out are exceeded and provides a well-rounded examination of modern Scots and novel-like prose with an academic twist that can come naturally, but doesn't always, within the field of linguistics.
