Blasphemy! Heresy! Who does this man think he is, claiming to speak directly to God?! Jesus did it, Muhammad did it, the Jewish prophets did it, but none of their Gods had the sardonic wit or raw verve of Prophet Walsch's God. Neale Donald Walsch isn't claiming to be the Messiah of a new religion, just a frustrated man who sat down one day with pen in his hand and some tough questions in his heart. As he wrote his questions to God, he realized that God was answering them... directly... through Walsch's pen. The result, far from the apocalyptic predictions or cultic eccentricities you might expect, turns out to be matter-fact, in-your-face wisdom on how to get by in life while remaining true to yourself and your spirituality.

Book Description

Conversations with God Book 1 began a series that has been changing millions of lives for more than ten years. Finally, the bestselling series is now a movie, starring Henry Czerny (The Pink Panther and Clear and Present Danger) and Ingrid Boulting (The Last Tycoon). Produced and directed by Stephen Simon (producer of Somewhere in Time and What Dreams May Come) and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Fox Home Entertainment, the theatrical release is set for October 27, 2006. The movie is the true account of Walsch (played by Cierny), who went from an unemployed homeless man to an "accidental spiritual messenger" and author of the bestselling book

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, Not Very Satanic.......2007-06-21

I went out and bought this book after seeing the film version of Conversations with God. I was a little dissapointed that I could only find it in hardcover, but I still bought it. I have been raised Lutheran, but recently I've started to have different experiences and this religion is one that I don't think is right for me. I'm not saying its bad. This book really did help me to understand alot of things about god. Some christians hate this book because they say it is from the devil, but i have come to find out that anything popular or anything that makes money is from the devil.People need to stop comparing this to the bible, the author never said it was the bible. This book says to many good things about god and trusting him to be from the devil. Those who think that probably didn't even finish reading the book. Its ok to have religion, but dont think that just because something is different from what you have been taught it is from satan. Too many So Called Christians give him so much credit and publicity and they wonder why satan is such a big thing. this is a good book. You should read to see another view of life. And you don't have to believe everything you read. It's hard because christians give God a bad name by how they act and many people are scared away by the actions of some so called christians that they don't even get to see what god has for them.

2 out of 5 stars nice thoughts........2007-06-09

I read this book when it first came out many years ago. The ideas are similar to other spiritual books put in a different way. A little old for present day philosophy but good when it first came out. I had however read a better book in this field so it made this one look rather lacking in foundation. Nevertheless a fun and interesting read.

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype!.......2007-05-25

WOW, i read this book recently after hearing about it from several different sources and it was actually purchased for me by a well meaning friend. I now fully intend to sit down with this friend whom i love VERY much and tell her what a blasphemous tragedy this book is.

While i did find some of the information in it helpful, such as praying with gratitude and having a more positive attitude about our lives and the events that occur, the one statement that rocked me to my core was that "God" doesn't CARE about us. He sits and watches us objectively and has no concern for what happens to us one way or the other.

God DOES care about each and everyone of us and I'm certain that God is deeply grieved to see His children being brainwashed and filled with such damning information. "Who said Jesus was perfect?" The BIBLE said so. The Bible is the answer, not this book.

I know from having read the Bible personally that satan knows scripture and will use it to his advantage when necessary as he does so frequently in this book but there is always the slight 'twist' on the actual biblical reference and THAT's where the problem lies.

As I read this book, I was reminded of another very popular book "The DaVinci Code". When i read that book, I remember thinking, "Oh MY LORD, can any of this be true?", and after an evening of much thought and prayer I concluded that this was an attempt to dilute my faith and pull me away from my belief in God and my place in His kingdom. This is exactly what satan has in mind. Attempts of this nature will only happen with more frequency as we rapidly approach the Lord's coming! I didn't finish reading that book, I threw it away and strongly recommended that others do not read it or only read it with the knowledge that it is a work of satan and to be better able to speak with the many that have read it and succumb to the lies.

The bible speaks quite clearly about these things occuring and MANY being fooled. It is a BITTER tragedy that many will be fooled with this one as well! The devil moves about like a roaring lion looking for those he might devour...i'm sure he'll have a full stomach from the many he'll take due to this book.

I want to end with this, there is much about God, the bible, Jesus etc. that I don't understand and am perfectly willing to admit this but my faith carries me through and my life experience PROVES to me that God LOVES me and has been present for me in many difficult times. One day when I see Him 'face to face' I will understand. Until then, I remember that I am just a puny human being on a tiny little speck floating through a vast universe and couldn't POSSIBLY have the knowledge or the wisdom in this relm to understand the workings of the Creator of the Universe.
I will continue to pray that the lasting impact of this book doesn't cause to many to fall by the wayside.

1 out of 5 stars A Formula to Make Millions.......2007-05-20

This is yet another example of someone realizing that gullible people number in the millions, and therefore much money can be made, even from blatant lies, e. g., "I'm talking with God." Don't even bother - use the time to come up with your own ideas, based on your experience and knowledge!

5 out of 5 stars easy meaningful read .......2007-05-19

I found Conversations with God an easy and intriguing read. The author's (God) ideas made me question and reflect on the guiding forces in my life. The idea that `God' is not making judgments, but human minds have constructed the idea of good vs bad, and right and wrong was provoking.
I too believe that God speaks to all, but most(including myself), listen with our ears and minds, but not our hearts.
The book introduced insights that were new to my mind. These ideas resonated; speaking to the unease that I indentlfy as the feeble human condition.
The book was an easy and entertaining read, give it a try. The depth and wisdom of `God's' conversations with the author were validating to feelings that float slightly beneath the surface of consciousness.
Again, give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish in 10 Minutes a Day.......2006-08-15

This text is either for the very beginning beginner or a good review for the person who has been away from Spanish for a time.
It is done in a logical manner and in workbook form. It has stickers for nouns and cutouts for flashcards of the important beginning vocabulary in the book. It is fun to do and quick to finish.

4 out of 5 stars A good Start .......2006-04-07

I have read almost all of the book. Along with the CDs I think the set would be very good for a beginner but not enough for adequate conversation. No conjugation rules mentioned. You have to be enrolled in a spanish teaching class to fill in the defecits that this set have. Overall I think my spanish improved alot from 0% spanish to 50% now, which is not bad to a beginner....

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Product.......2006-02-24

We are a homeschooling family and we were looking for a good beginning Spanish program. This program was recommended to me by several people so I thought we would give it a try. My daughter and I are learning together and we are finding this program easy to use and alot of fun. I think it would be a great program for older elementary (my daughter is 14) - adult. The CDs are a must because they teach you the correct pronouncation for each word. The stickers are a great way to incorporate Spanish into your everyday life. Excellent program. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to learning Spanish for educational purposes and for those who are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a traveler, Not for a class.......2005-08-12

I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing.

The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age.

Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner.

For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been good.......2004-11-26

This is a way for people to learn spanish fast but the book goes through things very quickly so you will find that you either don't understand or forget thing easily. I only suggest this book to someone how just wants to travel to a country that speaks spanish for a week but not for people who are truly interested in learning to speak spanish fleuntly at a good level.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice and explanation of idioms.......2007-06-01

Being a non-native speaker who has lived in US for over 10 years, I've heard of many of the idioms in this book at work, on TV and in every day conversations. I didn't know what some of the idioms mean exactly until I read them in this book. I think the book is very useful for immigrants like me or simply anybody who would like to learn American English.

5 out of 5 stars Homeowner.......2007-02-21

Excellent with a great many up-to-date expressions and words. CDs let you listen while doing other things. The book allows one to read what is on the CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Unexpectable.......2007-01-10

I didn't expect i would have a great book to improve my English.
I'm in my home country now so I've got going on studying since one an half month . It has 25 lessons and I'm on 12th. I can't wait to skip for the next one because I wonder what's going to happen in subject. But I know I need to consume each lesson. The fiction is really set successfully.
I listen to its CD and my pronunciation has already improved.
I appreciate the edition and the author.

PS: sorry about my English if I've done something wrong:)

5 out of 5 stars Speak English Like an American.......2007-01-10

One of the best idiom books out there, and I've tried quite a few. The stories are entertaining and most of the idioms are very common.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-02

I am really amazed of how much idioms and colloquial expressions you can learn just by listening to the CD. And guess what - these are idioms and phrases you REALLY hear everyday on the street, used by most people in everyday situations. Before, my English sounded a bit "artificial" and somehow forced. Now, the more I used the idioms I learnt here, the more natural and even friendly I sound to the native speakers.
Buy it, it's totally cheap for what it does!

In Conversations with God: Book II, Neale Walsch and God resume their discussion and move on to larger topics than the personal issues addressed in their previous dialogue in Volume 1. For an "unedited transcript" of a conversation, Book II is remarkably well organized and articulate, as if Walsch anticipatd our "but what about" questions before we asked them. The peculiar pair discuss time, space, politics, and even kinky sex, but Conversations with God: Book II isn't here for just shock value. It is an honest look at some of the broad issues important to all of us on the planet, and a suggestion of how things might go if we are all willing to open our minds and have our own conversations with divinity. --Brian Patterson

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as book 1, but still has some good questions........2007-06-25

I loved book one and went and bought book 2. The beginning was interesting, but I found myself skipping pages around the end. This book talks alot about politics which I found to be pretty boring. It is still and interesting book because of the questions it asks. I read reviews of people saying that these books are satanic. These books are not satanic. These books were not written for a religion, but for an open mind. I believe that satan is not peace, he is not about bringing the world closer to God, and satan is not about finding yourself. Its makes me sick how many Christians focus on Satan and give him so much credit. This is a good book that will allow you to think. And think for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-09

The author seems to have run out of ideas for the second book rather hoping the success of book one would sell this one. I found him struggling in this one and only just managed to finish it.

5 out of 5 stars Coversations With God: An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2).......2007-03-15

I loved this book as much as the others in the collection. It challenges everything you believe about God and religion. It opens a whole new door to spirituality and hopefully will help you to close the door on some of the things that you have been taught about a vengeful God.

3 out of 5 stars books for truth seekers.......2007-03-14

I still feel the way I did at the beginning of the series. I do give Walsh credit for wresting the concept of god away from the destructive clutches of organized religions. Take it a step further and read God Without Religion.

5 out of 5 stars A book like no other ..........2007-03-06

"Conversations with God" is a "life opener" (especially Book I) ... it doesn't seek you to change your belief systems, but it does make you question some of the beliefs others have convinced of you with regard to your chosen religions and spiritual beliefs ... I highly recommend this book to anyone who's seeking to get a better understanding of God -- if you think that God only talks to you in your designated Holy Book, then it's not God you're seeking -- it's man's approval you seek. God speaks to us in many different mediums, and He is definitely speaking to all through Conversations with God ...

5 out of 5 stars I love "Side by Side".......2006-09-12

I was from China and started my life in the USA as a graduate student in Engineering. Although I took the TOEFL before I came to USA, my English is not good enough to express myself clearly and accurately. I decided to improve my English about 4 months ago and started to borrow some ESL books from local libraries.

About 2 weeks ago, I found four "Side by Side" books (Book 1 to Book 4) from a local library and borrowed them. Now I am working on the Book 3 and I have enjoyed every book. I believe that "Side by Side" Book 1 to Book 4 will make very good textbooks for ESL (or ESOL) programs.

5 out of 5 stars SIde By Side Book 3.......2006-08-07

My wife and I have been using Side By Side since living in Japan as ESL teachers 1987-89. We used the first edition way back then. My wife still is active tutoring English to Japanese in our area of the USA and this is an excellent series for English learners. We would recommend it to anyone from any culture.

4 out of 5 stars A conversational supplement.......2006-04-25

This is an amazing series of books for any age beginners of Oral English as a Second Language (American English). I taught this series in China for 3 years, and am currently an M.Ed student. This series not only allows an inexperienced teacher to be able to jump into any class and feel confident teaching, but offers a strong order to the subject matter that is taught. The vocabulary and grammatical forms that are introduced are very useful in daily life.

If I were to offer criticism about this series is that these books are very sterile. Without supplemental activities, students will find the repetitive 'conversations' quite droll. Secondly, although it can be used at all ages, it's better to be used as a young adult/elementary book to be used as a SUPPLEMENT to other regular English classes. Without further instruction, many students feel that the material progresses much too rapidly. For example, Lesson 1 teaches the Alphabet and "What's your name?" while Lesson 3 is teaching Present Continuous Tense.

In keeping with the first two books in this trilogy, Conversations With God, Book 3 continues to clarify the muddy waters of our spiritual existence, but moves from individual and global issues to "universal truths," which apply to all levels of existence from the microscopic to the macrocosmic. It is difficult to criticize God, but if he is as pleasant as he presents himself in Walsch's books, then he won't mind the paltry mention of a structural problem. A hefty portion of Conversations With God, Book 3 backtracks to topics that were well covered in Book 1, and while a certain amount of recap is good to build on, Walsch's repeated return to these earlier conversations gets a bit frustrating for the reader who is familiar with the earlier books. Minor blemishes aside, Conversations With God, Book 3 explores some of the most fantastic subjects that people are prone to ponder under starry evening skies: What happens when we die? What is time? Are we alone in the universe? Walsch's dialogue with the creator puts these and other imponderables into comprehendible terms. If these revelations are true, and it is ultimately up to us to know them as truths or not, then the universe is a very intriguing place, and we haven't come close to realizing our potential in understanding it. However, the great thing Conversations With God, Book 3 makes clear is that we can understand the universe if we so choose. --Brian Patterson

5 out of 5 stars Are You Listening?.......2007-05-18

This book series is a must read for all seekers of truth. But if you are not open minded, if you are not teachable then do not bother. You must admit to yourself that you may not actually know the truth in these matters. If you can do that then the seeds of truth may sprout and grow. If you dismiss this opportunity then you may very well miss your calling in this life. Time is short for those who wish to rise for the coming changes on Earth. Listen if you have ears!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Inspirational Truths.......2007-04-08

Best book of the trilogy. I noticed that about 90% of the negative reviews are from Christians who tout the Bible as their source to discredit the inspirational truths in this book. The problem with trying to convince them that this book rings true on many points is like trying to teach a kindergartener calculus: They just won't get it until they are ready. Their egos seem to be so rigid at this point in their growth cycle they just can't let go. Eventually they will learn. So I have given up on trying to convince them that their path is not the only one. Someday, like I did, when they are ready they will learn.

5 out of 5 stars Fundies Christians are the Anti Christ (if there was one) .......2007-03-23

I do not believe in the Anti Christ, but it is self-evident that evil is the stupidity and darkness on earth best represented in the western world by the fundie Bible thumping simpletons who think they actually have a mission by spreading their bigoted and narrow minded message to the more intelligent populous. If this sounds harsh it is because I cannot stand that self-righteous, ignorant bunch.
While CwG is not perfect nor it is complete I love the message (actually the truth) and despise the ignorant morons who say it is not right because it "contradicts the bible".
If you take the Bible word by word then what say you to the following passages?
Happy To Kill Children
"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." (Psalms 137:9, KJV)

"How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones Against the rock." (Psalms 137:9, New American Bible)

"Happy the man who shall seize and smash your little ones against the rock!" (Psalms 137:9, New American Bible)

"a blessing on anyone who seizes your babies and shatters them against a rock!" (Psalms 137:9, Jerusalem Bible)

5 out of 5 stars CWG #3.......2007-02-14

The best of the CWG books and the one most given away to others. It answers the question of is there other life out there and what is it like. Even if this was totally science fiction it would be worth the read. And I believe there is much to think on here based on my life's research as a scientist. You can't have to much information so this must be read if you seriously call yourself a seeker or quester.

1 out of 5 stars WAKEUP.......2007-01-03

There is a prophet on the earth today as there has been in other dispensations and Walsch hasn't taken the time to meet him. The scriptures have all the information we need and if anyone put in as much effort as they do into reading this unenlightened book into reading the truth, they would be much happier then this book could get you.

Book Description

Eugene Peterson is convinced that the way we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. Do we read the Bible for information about God and salvation, for principles and "truths" that we can use to live better? Or do we read it in order to listen to God and respond in prayer and obedience?

The second part of Peterson's momentous five-volume work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God's revelation, and to live them as we read them. With warmth and wisdom Peterson offers greatly needed, down-to-earth counsel on spiritual reading. In these pages he draws readers into a fascinating conversation on the nature of language, the ancient practice of lectio divina, and the role of Scripture translations; included here is the "inside story" behind Peterson's own popular Bible translation, The Message.

Countering the widespread practice of using the Bible for self-serving purposes, Peterson here serves readers with a nourishing entrée into the formative, life-changing art of spiritual reading.

4 out of 5 stars Eating books?.......2007-06-06

Eating books? The image is as old as the Bible itself, in which heavenly beings tell Ezekiel and later John the evangelist to "eat" scrolls. Tasting, chewing, swallowing, digesting, and being nourished by the Word of God --- it's an apt foundational metaphor for the "spiritual reading" Eugene Peterson espouses.

Although EAT THIS BOOK is the second of Peterson's five works on spiritual theology, it stands alone, independent of the first (CHRIST PLAYS IN TEN THOUSAND PLACES). Unlike CHRIST PLAYS, which I would hand to a serious but uninformed seeker, EAT THIS BOOK is more suitable for Christians with some familiarity with Scripture and Christian basics. This is not a book that explains, for example, where to start initial Bible reading (with Genesis? with Mark or John?) or that really commends one particular version, unless it is Peterson's own "contemporary language" version, titled THE MESSAGE.

Peterson devotees will be particularly interested in the last section of the book, which in the larger context of textual translation tells the story of how and why Peterson started retranslating the Bible from the original Greek and then Hebrew into the popular MESSAGE version.

But that's not the central message or purpose of the book. Peterson wants us to see the Bible, rather than personal experience, as the authority for living. Noting a contemporary interest in spirituality, he says, "An interest in souls divorced from an interest in Scripture leaves us without a text that shapes these souls." But this isn't an academic interest in Scripture. "An interest in Scripture divorced from an interest in souls leaves us without any material for the text to work on." He also wants us to read the text, not primarily for knowledge, for theological study, for proof-texting, or even for inspiration --- for our own purposes --- but rather to incorporate it into our lives. "Spiritual reading," he says, means "participatory reading." It involves really digesting the story --- the sentences and the words --- of the Lord and living them out in obedience.

A center section of the book --- 30 pages --- discusses lectio divina, a 12th-century pattern of biblical reading that is better known in Catholic than in Protestant circles: reading the text, mediating on it, praying it, and living it out. The four aspects aren't necessarily done in a "stair-step fashion" but "more like a looping spiral," Peterson notes.

Even these chapters on lectio divina aren't written in a how-to voice but rather as a conversation or an essay explaining the dynamics, purposes and benefits of participatory reading.

Peterson includes an interesting though probably obvious discussion about the nature of words and language itself --- that it is first a spoken, then a written, form, both in history and in personal experience, from infancy to more advanced learning. He has sparked in me a greater interest in listening to the Scriptures as well as reading them.

2 out of 5 stars Just... plain... boring..........2007-05-26

The author seems to be very verbose about making a point, and doesn't give much (if ANY) scriptural references to things, what I'm sitting here doing for hours and hours is listening to a guy cheapen things, generalize, overstate and come to no conclusions. Over and over again. I really wanted to like it, though! I mean I figured a cd series with a title like "Eat This Book" would be mind-boggling. Most of the time he's just splitting hairs and rephrasing things by transposing words... for what seems to be merely the sake of doing it to sound wise. This doesn't fall in line with how "I" measure wisdom, which is to express hard concepts or new ideas for the intellectual AS WELL AS the layman. I'm all for vocabulary words but if they don't make your point, its just fluff. This, is all just my opinion. If it helps you, that is great, not trying to say don't be helped. I have a VERY amazing read that if you ever had time, I think could be just as helpful if not more than "Eat This Book". Its called "The Christ of the Mount" by E. Charles Stanley. This guy expresses more in one sentence than an entire cd I listened to did! Truly a gem.

5 out of 5 stars uplifting and feeing.......2007-05-15

In a world of many opinions and many books it's often hard to feel like you are reading something that is really teaching you wisdom (rather than just more opinion). Peterson does us a great service in this book by freeing us to read the Bible with less opinion and more relational reverence. Highly recommended and great for an Adult Sunday School class.

5 out of 5 stars A meaty little book.......2007-03-09

I read this book aloud. The expressiveness of the language really shone. I found it a timely inspirational book that has inspired me to continue reading the Bible particularly The Message. The wisdom , integrity, scholarship and passion of the writer impressed me. An easy must read for people who want to grow in faith in a vital relevant way by ingesting the message of the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars please do.......2007-01-18

This is a great book by the author of "The Message" which is a wonderful, modern translation of the Bible. It is well worth the time and will definitely benefit one with an open heart.

Book Description

A New York Times bestseller with over 1.9 million copies in print, THE BOOK OF QUESTIONS poses 265 questions that invite people to explore the most fascinating of subjects: themselves. These questions are as intriguing as our very lives because they are about our lives-our fundamental values and beliefs, our dreams and nightmares about sex, money, love, power.

Some of the questions thrust you into a value-testing hypothetical situation (Would you accept 20 years of extraordinary happiness and fulfillment if it meant you would die at the end of the period?), some ask you to delve into your past (When is the last time you stole anything?) and help you find out if you've changed (Would you now return it if you could?), and others reveal your basic nature by examining your behavior (When you are given a compliment do you usually acknowledge it or suggest that you really do not deserve it?). Whether used as an avenue for personal growth, a tool for deepening relationships, or simply as an entertainment, THE BOOK OF QUESTIONS may be the only publication that challenges-and even changes-the way readers view the world, without offering a single opinion of its own.

Getting high school students to engage in a piece of literature is sometimes a challenging task. Stock's book is very useful for focusing students' thoughts on a very personal level. From there, we're able to have fascinating discussions on what kids really hold as important.

A good book for introspection at any level.

5 out of 5 stars Food for Thought.......2007-04-21

I have been a writer for 20 years and this book has openned many doors and friendships. It also has made me think and ponder ideas and isssues I never thought before. I have had three copies over the years and still go back to this book for thoughts to ponder. I suggest any writer get a copy and keep it for ideas.

I enjoy sharing these questions with friends & family. I have gotten to know many people better just by openning this book

So a question for you, Are you going to buy this book or not?

4 out of 5 stars The Type of Book You Would Look at Over and Over Again.......2007-04-08

This booklet is both powerful and simple. It has been said that everything we do when we make a decision is based on an internal question we ask ourselves whether we are conscious of it or not.

What if we asked more powerful questions to ourselves in the hopes of better answers? This book will help you with those questions. Be prepared, though, this book is holding up a mirror to yourself.

This is also a Great book for:
1. Thinking about what you would do in extreme circumstances.
2. Finding out about what your date really thinks about things.
3. Spending quality time with a spouse or sig. other and really talking to them.
4. Parties. (I almost seem halfway intelligent when I use it.) ;-)
5. Sales. (Yes, you could ask a very unusual question as an icebreaker)
6. Giving Interviews. Find out how your candidate thinks. (be careful with the Human Resources and legalities, though)

I keep coming back over the years to look at the questions. This is not a book to get at the library or borrow, it is A gem you should buy and keep on your shelves. Special.

2 out of 5 stars Lame.......2007-04-06

This book is so small. And I would say I only liked 10% of the questions. They were really stupid. I don't recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Conversation Piece.......2007-03-12

My wife introduced me to this book almost 20 yeas ago and we still find uses for it today. It's great to have at parties and gatherings because it breaks the ice and gets people talking. There are endless spins you can put on the questions asked. They really make you think and examine yourself, as well as others. I recommend it.

Whatever your reason for wanting to learn some Italian, Italian For Dummies is the right book for you. Written in partnership with Berlitz – experts in helping people learn foreign languages – this book gives you the skills you need for basic communication in Italian, and it will get you well on your way to becoming fluent. Italian For Dummies covers not only ordering at an Italian restaurant, but also these topics:

The best thing about this book is that you can learn at your own pace; for example, if you're planning a trip to Italy next year, sit down once or twice a week with this book and go through the chapters that you'll think you need for your trip. 2 out of 5 stars Not for dummies!.......2007-05-07

Learning a language is difficult, at least for me, and I was disappointed with this book. Yes, it does provide a lot of information, but it is not presented in a way that makes learning the language any easier, fun or engaging. And, since I enjoy learning Italian, I've tried several types of programs. I use this book more as a reference tool. Can't imagine ever learning the language from scratch with it! Clearly not for dummies.

2 out of 5 stars Just a peek.......2007-05-01

This book and CD is a bird's eye view introduction to Italian. If you a serious about learning the language, choose a product with lots more audio content. Unless you hear the spoken language you'll never grasp it.
On the other hand, if a quick look is what you're looking for, then this is the book for you.

This is a really easy book to use. believe it or not, Italian is my first language, English my second & I speak several others as well! I used this book as a refresher course & I was totally amazed at the ease of use & the ability to understand everything that was put before me! I highly recommend this book to absolutely anyone that wants to learn basic Italian!

1 out of 5 stars NO CD-ROM W/THIS BOOK!!.......2006-11-25

I purchased this book as it supposedly came with a CD-ROM - it does not!! It comes with a regular audio CD. The error in the product title is on AMAZON'S part, as Amazon clearly describes it as containing a "CD-ROM." I didn't notice until I received it that the book cover states "audio CD". As for book content, no comment yet, as I'm trying to decide whether the book is staying or going.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - Meets my expectations!.......2007-06-14

I purchased his book because it was recommended to go along with Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese Language CD's. I feel it is a great tool in broadening my base in learning Brazilian Portuguese. I really like the phonetic spelling when new words are introduced.

A very good companion book to the conversational learnining on Pimsleur!

5 out of 5 stars Easy learning.......2007-03-09

This is the greatest book. I put the stickers all over my stuff at home. I learn a little bit each night and find that I retain more over time. It is very easy to read and breaks it into small bits for easy retention. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Brazilian Portuguese.

4 out of 5 stars Great starting point to be followed up with Pimsleur CDs or other audio.......2006-12-14

This book was my introduction to Brazilian Portuguese. I found it easy to use, well-laid out, and practical. I am very visual, so it was helpful for me to learn the written language and then move on to the Pimsleur CDs. I might have been lost on the CDs if it were not for the foundation this book set. The pronunciations are often different than what would be obvious, so I think that the visual and the audio are a great compliment to eachother, though I would start with this. Don't do them both at the same time though or you may get confused! I am headed to Brazil and feel fairly confident I'll be able to get around - I have a simple but solid vocabulary from just these two sources. Also, in response to another review, in Portuguese (as well as in Spanish) the accent is always on the second to last syllable, unless there is an accent written above another syllable. They could easily have mentioned this in the book. If you know Spanish, you will move more quickly through the book, but know that they are very different languages, especially in pronunciation.

5 out of 5 stars Good place to start.......2006-08-05

I am a native speaker trying to teach my hubby a few words for our trip to Brazil. I found the book very easy to use. Most nights he practiced by himself and I reviewed the material. He was able to get pretty good pronunciation using the books guidelines, but emphasis was harder. It think this is true anytime you are studying language through a book. The stickers were fun to use, we did label items around the house. After getting this book down we moved on to a CD ROM package which has been useful as well. My husband felt that the book did not do a very good job with teaching tenses and conjugating words. This is true, the books aim was to teach you useful phrases and words, you would still be limited in your ability to understand a native speakers anwers to your questions. However, after only one month he definitelty learned quite a bit. Even though I am fluent it is easier to work from a program, as learning from me is hit or miss, this way we have the basics covered.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2006-07-05

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a great way for a beginner to pick up the basic words and phrases needed to communicate in Portuguese. When you actually follow the directions and spend the 10 minutes a day, you really pick up the language quickly! I like the way the book is written and found it easy to follow and understand. Great way to learn!
