5 out of 5 stars Student review.......2006-10-19

My writing has improved 200% because of the information presented in this book. I am a junior marketing major at Northern Illinois University. This text is enjoyable to read with great visuals and equally interesting real- world examples. I will definitely keep this book. The skills learned from this book will guide me in my career for years to come. Thank you for writing this book and to my professor for choosing this book.

5 out of 5 stars BUSINESS WRITING INSTRUCTION TAKES QUANTUM LEAP!.......2004-10-01

As a college business communication instructor and corporate writing consultant of 20+ years, I feel my career is about to take a quantum leap forward with my discovery of this magnificent compendium of materials. Mary Ellen Guffey has done ALL the hard work! Juicy, readable text: done. Riveting "inside" information on cool corporations: done. Web-based support? Manuals? PowerPoints? Videos? Done. Fresh writing prompts, some packaged with the research already done? Done. With my old text, I've been drowning in an attempt to supplement and update and enrich the dated material enough to keep it relevant and arresting. Now I'm finding that I have plenty of time to interact with students over their own writing and presentations. I've always felt one-on-one and small-group interaction to be a huge part of my mission as a classroom teacher. Thanks to Mary Ellen Guffey, I'm able to do more of it, while spending less time overall on take-home work. Thank you, Mary Ellen, from the trenches--not just for a marvelous tool, but for a whole toolbox full of them.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Classroom!.......2004-09-27

I am an instructor at a business college, and this textbook (along with the accompanying website for students) proved to be wonderful for use in the classroom. The chapters were lively (even for a four-hour lecture class!) and provided real-world details and examples. The website accompanying the textbook has plenty of extra information for classroom use, as well as activities that students can do to review chapters and test their grammar skills.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book for College Students.......2004-09-23

Business Communication: Process and Product has been the best textbook I have worked with. Everything is presented in a clear and reader-friendly manner. Of all the books I have had to purchase for my courses, this was well worth the investment. Even though I recently earned my degree, and am no longer taking classes, I am still benefiting from owning this book.

5 out of 5 stars BC:PP is an instructor's dream!.......2004-09-22

I teach an entry level MBA class that focuses on Leadership and Communication. Previously, the text for this class was average to poor. I dreaded using it. Starting this semester, we're using Mary Ellen Guffey's Business Communication: Process and Product text. It's a dream! It's a joy as an instructor to have an academic text such as BC:PP that is (a) very applicable to real-world business situations, (b) easy and fun to read, and (c) filled with tons of great ideas for class and homework assignments. In addition, instructors can request support materials such as video, PowerPoint chapter reviews, chapter tests, etc. that save a TON of time and effort! I am truly enjoying using this book, as are my students. I'd HIGHLY recommend it for any undergrad or graduate level communication course!

5 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners..........2007-06-12

This book is not really geared for the beginner; it is for those who have a decent/modest/working command of the English writing/language with a basic understanding of sentence structure but need tweaking here and there to help perfect their skill. It covers EVERYTHING from punctuation, tense and subject agreement, spelling, word use--everything that goes into writing. The book is very busy in that it is LOADED--it covers everything you need to write properly/correctly. The book's section-numbering-system might be a bit of a tickle, but give it a scratch and you'll be on your way. The numbering system helps you locate/move from one area of grammatical treatment to another quickly; it allows this full coverage monograph to be printed into a portable size book. There are no "filler text", no speeches, no stories, no editoralizing--just concise writings on proper writing. It also provides clear examples, valuable notations, and alternative sentence formations. You WILL get your $ worth! (I didn't have time to check the book for this review, so mistakes are mine. ;>)

5 out of 5 stars Great General Reference for Writers and Editors.......2007-05-09

I am a medical editor so my Bible is the AMA guide, but I needed a more general reference for my regular grammar/English queries. A co-editor who has been relying on and loving his Gregg Manual for years recommended it to me. His recommendation proved most helpful because so far, this book is great. I have yet to have a grammar question the Gregg Manual couldn't answer. It's great for editors and writers regardless of industry, and would be helpful for students as well.

Book Description

The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country

In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. With chapters like "The Ten Rules of Successful Communication" and "The 21 Words and Phrases for the 21st Century," he examines how choosing the right words is essential.

Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. He'll tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness."

If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Its worth reading.......2007-06-19

The book provides you with a foundation for successful communication. The author gives examples of effective and ineffective communication, also provides short lists of words to use and avoid. Its an easy, interesting read that I found helpful. You won't become a word master by reading this book alone but is pretty specific and is a good read for anyone looking to sharpen their communication skills. You may not agree with all the techniques but you should at least pick up one interesting way to more effectively communicate and it should make you reflect on your own experiences of successful/unsuccessful communication.

1 out of 5 stars Words that workED: a "golden oldies" catalog, minimal insights.......2007-06-08

I am a skilled writer of advocacy articles and I hoped that this book would provide perspectives and insights to improve those skills. Failing that, I hoped to find something that I could recommend - in whole or in part - to those I mentor. This book failed miserably in both regards. The negative review by Publisher's Weekly (under Editorial Reviews above) is much too kind.

The advice on how to select words that have the desired impact falls short of what I routinely get when colleagues give me quick informal comments on what I have written (and vice versa) and far short of what is provided by in-house technical editors.

Much of this book is spent cataloging "golden oldies" - a collection of some of the most famous and effective advertising slogans. However, he provides only a simple recounting of these slogans and negligible explanation or insight into how they came about. I found the writing to be rambling and uninteresting. Younger readers (under 40) may have problems relating to many of these examples because too many are from before their time. Paradoxically, the author warns about this very problem in the middle of this enumeration.

The author's background as a pollster is highlighted in the blurbs for the book, with the implication that it had a major role in the book. WRONG. You will read a few minor, irrelevant comments meant to be entertaining. Nothing new if you have participated in a couple of focus groups, or even if you have seen a TV episode that had a focus group as part of the plot (For those who equate credibility with being on Fox, see "Grift of the Magi", episode 9 of season 11 of "The Simpsons"). Snide asides aside, the coverage really is that slight.

To understand how completely the author has refused to adapt his presentation from his political clients to the more general audience, ask yourself: When I encounter the advice to use the term "electronic surveillance" instead of "eavesdropping" or "wiretapping", am I going to tape a note about this to my computer?

As the book wore on, the author increasingly undercut his credibility. For example, he encourages using the word "solution" to describe commercial products (page 227). This advice would have been useful a decade or two ago, but "solution" is now so overused that is part of the standard boilerplate in a marketing/sales presentation. The current reaction to this word is "Can we skip past this cr*p and get to the real content?".

In the author's advice about talking your way out of a traffic ticket or onto an airplane, my focus would have been on understanding the mindset and motivation of the audience (the police office or gate attendant), with the exact examples as a tease. The author gets it backwards: The mindset was presented as explanatory background. With the highly predictable negative reaction from readers, this is yet another nail in the coffin for the credibility of the author's expertise.

In discussing the myth that Americans are well-educated (page 184), his standard for a proper college education is one that is centered on reading the classics in their original Greek and Latin (although it is unclear whether this is his bias or the bias of his typical client). This raised serious doubts about his current expertise - It is not uncommon for the head of a consulting company to become so focused on the clients (contacts and sales) that he adopts their biases and self-deceptions, losing touch with his firm's expertise.

The author spends a full chapter discussing the recall of California Governor Grey Davis, but that account bears no resemblance to what I observed. I have absolutely no recollection of any of the slogans and phrases that he claims won the election. And it is in direct conflict with the reasons given by the many Democrats (a near majority) who voted to remove Davis. Additionally, if the author was correct about the power of the given phrasings of the issues, Tom McClintock (a far-right ideologue and the favored candidate of the party) would now be governor, not Schwarzenegger.

Throughout the book, I had a gnawing impression that the author was overly full of himself. This culminated when he would have the reader believe that he was responsible for John McCain's use of the phrase "straight talk" (in 2000). He states "But John McCain was not the first person to use the phrase 'Straight Talk.' When I was a student ... in 1983, I wrote a newspaper column ... called 'Straight Talk.' ..." If the author is oblivious to the long history of this phrase in politics and everyday life, it is unwise to give any credence to his (very limited) discussion of other political slogans and phrases.

His political philosophy is so intrusive that it undermined much of what he says. As evidenced by other reviews here, the reader projects the deception / manipulation from the examples onto the author. Why would a pollster pick so many examples involving issues where he is on the other side from the majority of the American people (and hence the likely audience)? Why not pick examples where the likely audience would see the author in a positive light? Why not focus on examples where the author's contribution was bringing clarity (reducing confusion) to an issue?

The book is a failure judging it by its own 11 rules for effective communication.
- "Speak aspirationally" (7) - The political examples are heavily skewed toward manipulation and deception, not the effective communication of what one believes. So unless the target audience of this book is people who aspire to be better liars ...
- "Consistency matters" (4) - This book is advertised as addressing effective communication but because of the skewed selection of examples, much of the audience sees it as being about manipulation and rejects it (the book fails the "authenticity" test). It is illuminating that many of the book's defenders have failed to grasp this key concept - they aren't able to recognize that various negative reviews are complaints about such violations.
- "Provide context and explain relevance" (10) - sorely lacking (see above).
- "Sound and texture matter" (6) - I cannot remember one instance where I thought "nicely phrased" but I do remember plenty of passages where I thought the opposite.
- "Novelty" (5)- Although the rules themselves are very old, there is plenty of room for novelty by updating examples and perspectives. But this book made me, and many other reviewers, long for the previous works.
- "Credibility is as important as philosophy" (3) - The author is so focused on his politics (philosophy) that he uses examples that detract (and distract) from his points, rather than reinforcing them.
- "Visualize" (8), "Visual imagery matters" (11), "Ask a question" (9) - If these techniques were used in this book (as opposed to being explained), they were so ineffective that I don't remember them.
- Of the two remaining ("Small words", "Short sentences"), I wasn't paying close enough attention to judge.

If you are over 50, with no experience in politics or persuasive writing, have not watched political coverage on TV (where these phrases have been much covered over the years), and are considering becoming a Republican political operative, you may want to borrow this book from your public library.

To the critics of this review (inevitable, based upon what occurred with other reviews here):
1. A topic area being important does NOT translate into a particular book written on that topic as being important, good, or even worth reading.
2. An author having expertise on a topic canNOT be equated to his having - or being able to - write a good book on the topic.
3. That a consulting firm is highly paid canNOT be equated to its having expertise on the topic. A significant portion of the consulting industry sells reputation, not expertise - they are hired to recommend what the client has already decided to do (hence terms like "CYA consultants").

5 out of 5 stars Short, Simple, Powerful.......2007-06-06

Read this book right away.

That was clear - wasn't it? Words That Work is an important book for anyone who relies on language to earn their living, as I do. As a speaker, writer (my latest book is Be Unreasonable), marketer and business accelerator, the specific language I use makes all the difference as to whether or not my message has impact. Often, the right words determine if I'm going to convince my audience, sell the deal, and win my case.

The Ten Rules for Effective Language and the Twenty-One Words and Phrases for the Twenty-first Century are standout chapters. It would be worthwhile to read the book for those alone. While the Ten Rules are not unique to this book, they are freshly and clearly presented in a way that makes for an ideal checklist. And you could use the Twenty-One phrases as a guidebook to construct your next press release.

This is a real-world tool, filled with powerful examples of language choice for you to adapt to your won communications. It's also pretty entertaining, with great nuggets of American social and political history. Plus, there's a fun section on myths about language and people, that while not one bit surprising is a great example of shaping the context with false assertions, and then knocking them down to advance your own arguments.

The most important message may be this: consistency matters - so repeat, repeat early, and repeat often. And while you're at it - communicate continuously. The one with the most message in the marketplace wins, every time.

Read this book, right away. (See, it works!)

4 out of 5 stars Words that Work Really Works!.......2007-05-01

Words That Work, by Dr. Frank Luntz provides an insightful look into the way we use words. The book contains excellent stories about how changing the words we use can re-frame an entire conversation, and he also provides practical tips on how to use the right words to make your point clearly and effectively.

Dr. Luntz also provides the "10 rules of successful communication:"

1. Simplicity: Use small words. Avoid words that might force someone to reach for the dictionary, because most Americans won't.
2. Brevity: Use short sentences. Be brief as possible. Never us a sentence when a phrase will do.
3. Credibility Is as Important as Philosophy. People have to believe it to buy it. If your words lack sincerity or if they contradict accepted facts, circumstances or perceptions, they will lack impact.
4. Consistency Matters. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition.
5. Novelty: Offer something new. Words that work often involve a new definition of an old idea.
6. Sound and Texture Matter. A string of words that have the same first letter, the same sound or the same syllabic cadence is more memorable than a random collection of sounds.
7. Speak Aspirationally. The key to successful aspirational language is to personalize and humanize the message to trigger an emotional remembrance.
8. Visualize. Paint a vivid picture.
9. Ask a Question. A statement put in the form of a rhetorical question can have much greater impact than a plain assertion.
10. Provide Context and Explain Relevance. You have to give people the "why" of a message before you tell them the "therefore" and the "so what."

Often the book comes from the advertising or political perspective, but there are great insights for all of us who have to communication, and persuade, and inspire. We use this book as one of our prime resources in workshops that we facilitate on communication and "soft skills."

1 out of 5 stars But what if I hear this?.......2007-04-29

But what I hear is a deeply mendacious piece of self-promotion, which speaks at length about the author's achievements in public life, but which cannot keep its own promises. The blurb claims that this text "raises the curtain on the craft of effective language." Yet this is not a book about effective language; rather it is about manipulation. It's not about getting your message across; it's about getting people to agree to a message that has been tailored to elicit that agreement, whatever its actual content might be.

If I'm wrong about this, then the author is by no means in control of his own message. If I'm right, then the author is by no means in control of his own message.

5 out of 5 stars Multi Media Public Speaking Training.......2006-07-19

'Audience Centered' seems to be an obvious off-shoot of the teaching styles, that have become hyper-popular over the last decade or two, that claim to be 'Student Centered'. Is it just a buzz word, or is there something in it? As another reviewer points out, Audience Centered public speaking dates back at least as far back as Aristotle.

In keeping with the new-fangled approaches towards learning, 'Pubic Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' offers the student a full multi-media experience, that is reflected in the price. However I love such an approoach as it allows the student to learn in his or her preferred learning style.

While I don't need to go into the contents of the course because the product description by the publisher is more than adequate. This renewed package though, is a veritable collection of expert advice on all aspects of public speaking, from preparing to completion. What is more, you can actually see the speeches being delivered through examples provided by online video clips.

Without a doubt the price for this package is a little steep. You might fid it worth it, or you might not. Value is so subjective after all, but 'Public Speaking: An Audience Centered Approach' certainly takes advantage of the many more learning channels available today, than a book alone can, or even an audio/book course.

5 out of 5 stars The Sixth and Ever Better Edition.......2006-07-11

You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.'

The first edition of this book, about 15 years ago, set the tone for what has now become the sisth edition, with each edition improved by audience feedback and new educational concepts. The general concept of keeping the audience at the center of of the speakers mind through all of the steps in the process.

Of course, this does not mean that the speaker tells the audience only what they want to hear; to do that would not convey anything to the audience but a good feeling. Some of the example speeches, 'I Have a Dream,' Martin Luther King, Jr., speak to people holding views very opposed to his.

The highly illustrated book is carefully organized with a mixture of text, tables, drawings, comments and questions to maintain the students interest while educating him. Indeed these techniques are some that can be used by the student in his speeches.

I know that this is a teacher's edition but I presumed that because it was, it would have come with the DVD which is included in the student's addition. Other wise the book is exactly the same as the student's edition and was sealed as stated. Overall, I am pleased with the transaction.

4 out of 5 stars Fast Service / Low price.......2002-08-08

Paid low price for quality book and fast delivery!

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read- great to use.......2000-04-25

This is a really good book. I used it for a college class on public speaking, and I would have been lost without it. It covers things that you always forget to include, and great hints on how to increase your confidence and persuade an audience. For someone like me who was terrified, but no longer is of public speaking, and for those who just need a refrsher course, this book is brilliant.

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

4 out of 5 stars Good Advice.......2007-06-28

Light read with great advice, stories where the advice has been applied and practical ways to apply the info.

Great knowledge for all types of relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most.......2007-06-28

Buy this book and Stan Cronin's How to Date Your Wife, both available here on Amazon. Between the two books you will have what you need for a lifetime of marriage. Get them, read them and live them for as much happiness as life can bring. This is only the fourth book I have recommended this year.

4 out of 5 stars Read together........2007-06-27

My husband and I got this book in the first few months of our marriage and read it together over the passage of a couple weeks. There were a few parts where we ended up laughing because they are a bit cheesy but over all it really added insite to the whys and hows of realtionship health. We figured out that even though we get along great, we have different ways of showing love and different ways of appreciating love. Over all, it's an eye opening book.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener.......2007-06-27

Very insightful reading. We discovered things about ourselves and each other which had never come to light before. I would recommend this book to any couple, regardless of how long they have been together or how well they think they know each other.

5 out of 5 stars Duh, now I get it!.......2007-06-26

The only complaint I would have about this book is that it makes love and relationships appear a little too simplistic by shoving all behaviors into these five boxes, but....what he says does make alot of sense and now I understand myself and my girlfriend way better than before. Recommended for couples or even for someone just wanting to find out more about themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-04-05

This is a must read book if you are a developer, architect or in anyway related to technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for building business apps.......2007-03-13

For me, this book is an invaluable reference for building business apps.

Want help choosing a framework? Want some guidance for solving common business problems? These patterns help solve these kinds of problems.

NOTE: I have tried to find other sources for these patterns, and I have only found Fowlers website, which is really only a summary and recommends purchasing the book.

This book has examples in both Java and C#. You can certainly use these patterns in .NET.

Under .NET you are not actually forced to use the Table Model. I think the purpose of this book is to help you realize this.

There are frameworks for .NET that use the Domain Model and Data Mapper patterns, but you would never know this unless you were familiar with the patterns in this book.

For me, reading this book didn't allow me to write new code, but it did allow me to understand my choice to use a particular framework/technique over another.

4 out of 5 stars Educates you on Enterprise Architecture.......2007-03-10

As a newcomer to enterprise architecture this book educated me on possibilities for decisions to be made in designing an enterprise architect. It will also give you a language for describing existing characteristics of an existing enterprise application which may use some combination of the patterns describe in this book. The discussion of where to keep session state for a webapp was particularly helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Good so far.......2007-01-10

I haven't been able to read it cover to cover, but i read the mapping chapter and it was good. Explain a complex subject in relly simple way.

Also the hard cover is nice!

4 out of 5 stars Key book on enterprise patterns.......2006-07-30

Even if you find enterprise stuff immensely dull, dealing with databases and web pages is a pretty common task, most of the action in software development revolves around it, and who wants to be completely ignorant of the the alphabet soup of various technologies the IT blogs, books and websites are floating in?

So if you must immerse yourself in this area, what better than a Martin Fowler book? The code is mainly in Java, with a fairly large smattering of C#. It would probably help if you understood some basics of enterprise development in those languages, e.g. servlets and JDBC for Java.

The patterns in this book cover organising domain logic, database mapping and access, web presentation, concurrency, and the book finishes by covering base patterns, a mixture of lower level abstractions of the sort covered in Fowler's first book, Analysis Patterns (e.g. Money), and those that bear a close resemblance to the classic Gang of Four patterns, with an enterprise twist (e.g. Plugin and Gateway). Nearly all the other patterns refer to these, so I don't know why these didn't appear first. Apart from that though, the book is very well organised. And the opening essay, that discusses the trade offs of every pattern and how they fit together in an application, is immensely helpful.

Wizened enterprisers looking for new material will not find much new here, but surely the point of patterns catalogues are to get down on paper the practices of those same wizened enterprisers, not to strike off in new directions. Therefore, an experienced developer should see this as a way to organise what they already know, and maybe in doing so, reveal some new insights.

A newcomer to enterprise development will definitely get a lot out of this, as the underpinnings to the plethora of modern enterprise applications are laid bare. You're not going to become a Hibernate, Struts or EJB expert from this book, but you should at least have a clue about what problems they're trying to solve.

As usual, Fowler manages to be a model of clarity, while still injecting regular touches of wry humour, quite an achievement given the potentially bone-dry material. If you want to know the basics of enterprise software, start here.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.

Book Description

This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

This is a perennial classic -- brief, terse, pithy approach to the basics of good grammar. Well worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars For writing as communication but not necessarily for writing as art.......2007-06-18

This is a book which teaches how to write in a clear, concise way. It teaches how to communicate most effectively one's meaning. It is a standard guide which means it can help in standard writing only. Professor Strunk at Cornell and his pupil E.B. White( Who revised and expanded his teacher's work decades after first being acquainted with it) have a clear approach on how to write correctly. But such advice cannot really be of major help to those who are interested in writing as art. Consider the styles of Joyce, of Kafka, of Kierkegaard, of Henry James and see how small these rules appear before the ambiguities, repetitions, digressions, indirections of these great masters.
This small work has been of great help and will be of great help to many- but not on the highest level of writing as Art.

4 out of 5 stars An essential tool.......2007-06-08

This little book should be on the desk of anyone whose profession requires him or her to communicate via the written word.

My only gripe (and it's why I give it four stars instead of five) is the book's use of writing examples that are stylistically archaic and often contradict the authors' basic rules.

5 out of 5 stars Best handbook for writing you'll find.......2007-05-25

I should have had this book during my grad student years while I taught a technical writing course for engineers. The full time instructor spontaneously vanished, so myself and another teaching assistant were left to teach the class with only a syllabus and a lame textbook. For about a year and a half I taught that course and was convinced it was impossible to teach grammar - but I didn't have the right tool. I changed the syllabus repeatedly, whittling away and some larger goal that I couldn't define. I just couldn't get the difference between active and passive speech through their heads (among other things), so I settled for the tried and true Intro-Body-Conclusion ten pager essay and graded them on format and execution. I tried to use context to pull them out of poor habits, but I still had paper titles like "The Internet in the United State's" (sic).

Some time later, when I was doing research, writing papers, and beginning my thesis work, a light went off in my head. I remembered an internship I had where my mentor told me to pick up a copy of a writing handbook, and for some reason I kept thinking "Charlotte's Web?" in my head. I Googled the book and eventually found Strunk and White. The day I got it I instantly recognized its value.

Tucked away in this short and concise little book are gold nuggets of information. Besides the well known tips about prepositions and run ons, there are well-written examples of commonly misused words, such as "comprise" and "effectual". The examples are hilarious and perfectly suited for instruction. The book is not a disorganized lump of opinions about writing style, rather it is well sorted with bold and italics to set off rules and lists about certain elements of style that should be considered by any writer.

I give this book as a gift to anybody taking on a writing endeavor, and I keep my own copy on my bookshelf at work. I was tempted to put "As a matter of fact (comma)" at the beginning of the previous sentence, but Strunk would slap my hand for that. It is a useless phrase that adds no value to the sentence.

At work, we are constantly writing technical reports and proposals and I often reach for this book when I'm attempting to clean up my mental-fatigued ramblings. I should have had this book in my teaching years, and if I could go back, I'd pay for all of the books myself if it meant the kids would keep their copy for their personal collection.

On a practical note, buy this book in addition to "The Little, Brown Handbook" by Fowler. Between the two of them you will be well equipped to tackle the complexities of technical or descriptive writing.

5 out of 5 stars I Love the English Language.......2007-05-22

There is no better or more concise guide to proper English grammar, syntax, and use anywhere. I always have this book within an arm's reach.

I am a physician and scientist who loves his native language. There is no superior tongue on this Earth for prose, poetry, scientific literature, passion, joy, and grief. The cadence of the King James Bible is as beautiful as it was when written. Learn the fundamentals of the language and buy this book. You will need no other, though many are offered on this web site. I use it when tutoring those struggling to learn English as their second language, and they find it clear and helpful, as long as they have mastered the basics.

4 out of 5 stars Textbook.......2007-03-03

It has a clear organization, and interesting insets. For a textbook, it intrigues. The comic inserts are a tip of the hat to culture, and everything is up-to-date.

3 out of 5 stars Careful..........2007-02-24

This is an okay book for note taking and has a lot of the terms identified, but please note THIS IS NOT THE TEXT BOOK!!! I'm not sure whose fault it was but when I went to buy it it only stated the tilte and cover of the textbook. I had to go back and buy the book elsewhere. Please be careful! As for the book itself it is a thin paperback notebook with key tearms (arbitrary as well as book terms) on the left side and a blank sheet to write notes on the left. The terms are pretty well chosen and helped me on a test. If this is all you want then get it but once agian be careful.

5 out of 5 stars Great bookq.......2007-02-17

I love the book. I am using it for a communication class I am taking and it is extremely helpful and easy to read. It uses today's terminology and is very up to date in regards to examples used and the way that its worded. It is a great book to learn a lot about communication that we don't necessarily learn from day to day interaction.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading Title.......2007-01-19

Was very disappointed when I received 'Cram101 Textbook Outlines' to accompany "Looking Out Looking In". I thought I had ordered the book "Looking Out Looking In". Very misleading when purchasing this. I don't know if something was listed wrong or not, but when ordering I usually type in the ISB # to find the book I need. Somehow I got the Looking Out... Textbook Outlines.

1 out of 5 stars not the actual book.......2007-01-19

This is the Cram101 textbook outline, not the actual book. I was unpleasantly surprised by this when I received it in the mail after paying to have it expedited. The title that amazon puts is misleading, even the other customer reviews are misleading. The only place that mentions Cram101 is the publishers review - which I found only after I got this worthless book.

5 out of 5 stars Designers start here.......2007-06-27

If you are responsible for the interaction design (front end) of your team's software and Web applications, and you are interested in WPF, this is the book for you.

With WPF, front and back end seem to be merged more than ever, leaving non-programmers feeling overwhelmed by all of the books out there aimed at programmers. Designers who are more comfortable with XHTML and CSS will feel right at home with this book, as it focuses on XAML, which is comfortingly familiar.

I'd recommend picking up VB or C# (or whatever Object Oriented language your team uses) as you develop your WPF skills, but this book will break down the walls surrounding WPF development, and keep you excited about learning more.

5 out of 5 stars Just Ausome!.......2007-06-17

After previous SVG experience, reading the entire WPF doco on MSDN, & trying all the samples I could find, I did not think there was much left to learn on WPF. This book showed me how wrong I was and how deep & creative WPF is. Kudos to the author. A great resource - buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars This is hard stuff to learn but the author makes it as easy as he can.......2007-06-11

I am a developer with many years of experience but this is some difficult information to grasp. XAML is complex and many of the concepts are new. You have to be willing to change the way you have been used to doing most things. For example, you have to be willing to use XAML binding rather than the usual method of explicitly hydrating your controls.

The author makes this as understandable as you can make while also covering it in the complete through detail you need for it to be useful in the real world. Yes having it in color does make a difference.

5 out of 5 stars whoa!...read it like a novel.......2007-05-25

I have been developing Windows software since 1994 and have had my share of good resources and poor resources. This book is amazing! The wording in the book is very similar to someone talking you through the entire WPF platform. Examples are excellent and so is the "Tips" and additional information. The author anticipates the user reactions specifically by seasoned developers and addresses them. I am reading this book like a novel. I am on page 356 and I can't put it down. This is in my top 3 developer books, if not #1. If you have any thoughts on going down the WPF path, start here.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, and highly readable.......2007-05-20

This book is an excellent example of just what a tutorial should be: readable, accessible, and well illustrated. I am deeply jealous of it being 4-color and it is a vivid demonstration of how much a full color book can convey. A great, must- have book

Book Description

Does your child speak a different language? Sometimes they wager for your attention, and other times they ignore you completely. Sometimes they are filled with gratitude and affection, and other times they seem totally indifferent. Attitude. Behavior. Development. Everything depends on the love relationship between you and your child. When children feel loved, they do their best. But how can you make sure your child feels loved? 5 out of 5 stars Right on the Money.......2007-06-13

Before reading this book, the idea of a 'love language' had never occurred to me. As a single mother, this book has been very helpful for my family. The concepts are laid out very well and are easy to apply. The tone of the book is not judgmental in the slightest. On the contrary, the book leaves the reader feeling competent and hopeful.

5 out of 5 stars I HAD ALREADY READ THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES.......2007-06-13

I had already read The Five Love Languages (for adults) so I didn't really expect to get much additional out of The Five Love Languages for Children. The first book had a major impact on my marriage and so I thought I would listen to the CD for children to see if there were a few additional tid bits. The CD has a lot more information than just the love languages. It really helped me to see how to better discipline my child in a more loving and more effective way. I have a son with Asperger's that is challenging. We used a lot of behavior modification with him, that has been effective but I noticed some anger and defiance starting. This book really helped me to better understand how to make sure my son feels undonitionally loved. His attitude has been so much better as I have applied what I have learned. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-12

This is an excellent book ! I have gained so much insight on the emotional needs of my son and I reccommend this to anyone who knows they need help in showing their children how important they are. This is an easy read and has been a big help.

5 out of 5 stars The World Needs So Much More Love.......2007-05-07

This is the most excellent book ever! Every parent should read it and then live it! Our kids live in a world without love and so many of them are going wacko on us. You need to be able to communicate love to each one of your children in the way they understand it best. This is a must read for everyone!

4 out of 5 stars quick easy read, yet great info.......2007-05-01

This book made a lot of sense as it described the 5 ways the people in my life (not just my children) give and receive love. As a busy at-home mother of 3 that are age 3 and under, I am already formulating little ways throughout the day to efficiently make my children feel loved that won't keep me from getting my daily work done! It includes a brief chapter on the single-parent household and also one of a typical marriage and how our children learn to behave as adults from us.

I was disappointed in the small amount of info on how to effectively discipline based on which love langage a child is - it basically says 'don't use the love-language of that individual child or they'll think they don't love you instead of just being disciplined', such as don't spank a physically affectionate child and don't speak harshly to a "verbal" child. I was hoping for more alternative ideas that can be effective for each child based on their love-language.
