Book Description
There has never been a self publishing manual like this.
Aiming at Amazon is NOT about getting your book into bookstores. Instead, it lays out an innovative approach focused almost entirely on sales at Amazon.com. It tells exactly how to make a nonfiction book sell well online, with tips never before offered in print.
This book is also NOT about working with a "self publishing company." It introduces the printer/distributor used by almost all those companies themselves -- the one they keep secret so they can be middlemen and charge you double.
Forget bookstores. And forget self publishing companies. Let Aiming at Amazon reveal to you the NEW business of self publishing.
Customer Reviews:
Do the hundreds of so-called `self-publishers' have you confused?.......2007-06-13
AIMING AT AMAZON will answer your questions with the unfrosted truth. Before you sign any anything, read this book. Unlike other publications on this topic, it's written in a clear concise manner that presents you the facts. Shepard unveils many fiercely guarded secrets of the publishing world, and gives you the resources you need to formulate your own publishing plan. The numerous websites that are referenced are worth the price of the book alone.

If you are a small press, buy this book.......2007-06-09
If you are a small press or a PMA member, buy this book. It changed the way we think about cover design, POD, and Amazon.
I asked my (freelance) book designer to get a copy for the information and suggestions about covers designed for online display, especially on Amazon, and POD.
Do not be put off by the cover. This book is an incredible value, easily equivalent to a few hours with a good consultant or a couple of sessions at PMA University.
Highest recommendation.
A Clear Path .......2007-05-25
For those who have carried the dream of becoming a published writer, Aaron Shepards book "Aiming at Amazon", provides a clear map to actualize that dream. This path to publishing is inexpensive, even profitable; and puts you in the drivers seat! It is written in such a way that even the technologically challenged can understand. One feels as if they have found their personal mentor, and that their 'dream' is doable. I recommend it highly for anyone serious about writing. Aaron Shepards companion book "Perfect Pages" further gives clear concise instructions on how to use a Word Processor to typeset and layout your book yourself! I highly recommend them both.
About all of POD, not just Amazon.......2007-04-30
If you know how to write a book and lay out the pages, this manual helps with all the rest of the POD process, including marketing books on Amazon. From his own experience as a publisher and obviously an obsessive personality, Aaron has patiently reverse-engineered much of the systems involved. As a result, there's material here that isn't in the other books I've read on marketing through Amazon. The book is short, easy to read, well-paced. It's also valuable for what it leaves out--the elaborate distributor-bookstore-reviewer matrix the older self-publishing manuals cover. Aaron stays sharply focused on what a single person can do as a self-publisher for whom it's a spare time activity or a second job.
Full of information........2007-04-23
The author clearly knows what he is writing about and the examples he gives from personal experiences are extremely helpful. This book will be valuable to anyone who is publishing a book.

Download Description
The basic business model of the book publishing industry remained largely changed between the Great Depression and the turn of the Millennium. Print a lot of books, try to get them reviewed so that stores would stock them on consignment, advertise, then hope that they don't come back as returns. Small imprints and self-publishers were reduced to begging distributors to accept their titles at discounts of 60 per cent or more, and were expected to accept returns in any condition and quantity. Print-on-demand book publishing, combined with short-discount distribution and Internet marketing, is turning the publishing business on its head. For the first time, authors are finding that they can launch their own publishing businesses and earn more from their writing than they would with a major trade publisher. Small imprints can invest their scarce resources in acquiring, designing and promoting new titles, rather than gambling on tons of books that cost money to keep in inventory. This book details the new method with which authors and publishers alike can use POD to cut costs and increase profits, while reaching new readers through the magic of Internet marketing.
Customer Reviews:
Good Introduction to POD.......2007-05-08
A good, honest, if somewhat basic book on POD publishing. The Author spends time on describing the traditional publishing industry, print runs, agents, contracts, and outlets like Book clubs and the problems of getting shelf space in Bookstores.
He then compares that with the POD approach. The most interesting section for me was "A Year in the Life of a POD Title" where he gives a month by month breakdown of sales, profits and trends that affected sales of an actual book.
While the author does not lead you hand in hand through the POD process, it`s still a useful overview for Writers thinking about POD.
Helpful..........2007-04-27
The book is helpful but if you have read other books on self publishing, the information is pretty much in the same line. I gave it 4 stars because in all of the books I read (at least I) would like to see more referrals to companies such as POD printers and recomendations to good POD printers. I would also personally like to get more info on self- Audio publishing and I have so far been able to find some info online but don't mind getting some info in a book for which I pay.
I would like to also find out how can an author make sure that he is getting the correct reinbursement and not being scammed by the POD publisher.
Over all, the book is good and the author provides some more information on his website and answers questions you can post there. Find out what works for you and your budget.
Basic background on the publishing industry along with how the author has experimented so he can self-publish profitably........2007-03-31
Last year I started building booklists on Amazon. One of my earliest lists included the instant book being reviewed. I had a negative idea about Print On Demand publishing, and I didn't like the cover design for this book. So I never read it even though it had a fair number of positive reviews.
Then a month ago or so I read Steve Weber's book entitled "Plug Your Book" (ISBN: 0977240614) which I enjoyed very much. It lead me to read Aaron Shepard's book entitled "Aiming at Amazon" (ISBN: 0977240614) which I also enjoyed very much. Since Mr. Shepard makes reference to Mr. Rosenthal in his book, I thought it was time to read the instant book. And I'm glad I did.
I recommend anybody interested in self-publishing and marketing your self-published text to get copies of this book and the ones by Weber and Shepard. The instant book came out in 2004 and is a little dated. At least that is the impression I got after reading all three books since the Weber and Sherpard books have been published very recently and relate intimately with this book's content.
All three books are aimed at nonfiction writers. They all seem to be written with "authors" in mind. But I like to think they are written for consultants, coaches, and public speakers in mind. Such professionals need publications to act as credibility pieces, and self-publishing is the easiest route to follow to getting a book published. It turns out that it is the most profitable way to go if you are not a best-selling author. And how many people are bestsellers? Not many. 5 stars!
A pioneering work.......2006-09-30
Morris Rosenthal, co-founder of the pod_publishers group on Yahoo! and popular blogger on both self publishing and Amazon, is an explorer and pioneer in using print on demand for profitable self publishing. This book is essential reading for the depth and originality of his experimentation, observation, and analysis.
A New Publishing Model - Perfect for Self-Publishers.......2006-06-01
POD (Print-On-Demand) has a poor reputation in the book publishing industry, because many of the "POD Publishers" advertising their services on the internet and in writers' magazines are in fact vanity publishers - you pay them in order to publish your work. There is little or no quality control, no editing, and they will publish practically anything - for good reason, this is frowned upon in the publishing industry.
This is a shame, because POD is actually something very different - it's a technology (which the vanity publishing model - along with most other publishing houses these days - uses) that allows you to print copies of a book, one at a time. This is very significant to self-published authors and small publishing houses - it means that you don't have to order a print run of 5000 copies. It makes self-publishing affordable.
Rosenthal explains in detail how the technology works and how to use it. He talks about LightningSource, the POD printing service that he uses, but his information is just as useful with other services (I use Lulu, and I found his book very helpful). He explains in simple, no-nonsense language the steps involved in bringing your work from a manuscript to a fully published book, and he provides good information about marketing, especially using the internet.
Even if you choose to pursue other publishing options, I highly recommend you read this book.

Stunning results and how to get them........2007-04-03
I thought I knew everything I should about getting the best results from photos in print on demand. I was wrong. Martin Koch's stunning results made my jaw drop. Frankly, I'm a Photoshop Elements kind of guy myself, so some of this meaty little booklet was over my head. But if you have access to the full Photoshop and a little skill in working with it, I'm sure you'll find this booklet even more rewarding than I did.
By the way, Martin's from Germany, and English is not his native language, so you'll need to forgive the occasional error in language. This book is not about polish, it's about practical information. And believe me, it delivers.
Dreadful...don't waste your money on this book!.......2007-04-03
As the title suggests, the author of this book MAY have figured out how to improve photo reproduction in print-on-demand books, but he does a very poor job of communicating his techniques to the reader. The book is completely lacking in organization, has not been edited or proofread, and is virtually useless. I have used Photoshop for more than a decade, and I could not follow this text. If you're a beginner looking for a step-by-step guide, this is most assuredly not it. Treat yourself to a nice lunch instead. I would have returned the book, except that I did underline a few items in a failed attempt to find something, anything, that was minimally useful. I'll give the author a few points for identifying a common problem and attempting to solve it, but before he prints one more book, on-demand or otherwise, he should hire a developmental editor and rewrite this book from scratch.

Book Description
These notes are based on the course of lectures I gave at Harvard in the fall of 1964. They constitute a self-contained account of vector bundles and K-theory assuming only the rudiments of point-set topology and linear algebra. One of the features of the treatment is that no use is made of ordinary homology or cohomology theory. In fact, rational cohomology is defined in terms of K-theory.
Customer Reviews:
Solid introduction; but.. .......2007-03-11
You'd think, at these notorious prices, that the publisher would have made a solid effort to cast these notes in a more engaging and readable form (i.e. to have them beautifully typeset, and do them some justice long after they were first published), as this still is the authoritative reference on the subject.
Shame, really.
