This is the first-ever English-language edition of the book Leo Tolstoy considered to be his most important contribution to humanity, the work of his life's last years. Widely read in prerevolutionary Russia, banned and forgotten under Communism; and recently rediscovered to great excitement, A Calendar of Wisdom is a day-by-day guide that illuminates the path of a life worth living with a brightness undimmed by time. Unjustly censored for nearly a century, it deserves to be placed with the few books in our history that will never cease teaching us the essence of what is important in this world.
Bolt has modernized and perfected the design and content of this format. And where her previous title, Love's Book of Answers, offered direction for those with romance on their minds, The Soul's Book of Answers contains wisdom from writings drawn from many spiritual traditions. This new Book of Answers addresses open-ended questions such as "How should I face this situation?" or "What do I need to do about...?" Whether the question is about a moral conflict, a future event, or simply, "What should I meditate on today?" this book of divination will help anyone's spiritual quest.
The first time I saw one of Carol's books I was instantly intrigued. I was one of the last people to a book signing party. They were just putting the books away, when I walked over and found the last Autographed copy... as if it was waiting for me.
When I picked up the book I had no idea how to use it. Of course, I'm not known for reading instructions. However, once you realize you are playing a game, it becomes an enjoyable treat.
As soon as I figured out what this book was all about, I was laughing out loud. Carol explained that it has the intrigue of a magic eight ball, but unlike the magic ball, this book has so many more answers. The instructions are on the back cover on a removable sticker and are also in the front of the book.
First you ask an open-ended question while holding the book and concentrating on your question for a few seconds. Concentrate on our question or say the question out loud.
Then, riffle the pages from back to front with your thumb. When you feel the time is right, stop and open the book. The page you see will contain your answer.
I tend to ask very specific questions and get quite a few good answers. You have to be serious about what you are doing. When you really concentrate, it seems to have conversations with you. Which can, by the way, produce some chills up your spine!
"The Soul's Book of Answers" contains a collection of wisdom from many spiritual traditions, so I knew this would be an enlightening experience.
So, I ask the book: "What will the year 2004 bring in regards to my spiritual growth?" Answer: "The only limitations you have are the ones that you accept."
Since I was a bit curious about this mysterious quote, I asked: "How will I free myself from limitations?"
Answer: "Many things which cannot be overcome when they are together, yield themselves when taken little by little."
Again, I ask: "How will I know what I need to overcome?" Answer: "Wait for what your soul shall see in sleep."
I love Carol's books because they really work for me. She produced the original Book of Answers in 1998 and the book was then published commercially later that same year. It went on to become a bestseller.
"When you seek to know it, you cannot see it. When you are silent, it speaks."
"Out of clutter, find simplicity; from discord, find harmony; in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."
"The Soul's Book of Answers" is a mysterious little book to intrigue the mind and is the most spiritual of the "Book of Answers" series. Just be very careful what you ask. You might just get the right answer.
Ok for novelty. Divining is another story..........2004-01-08The book has beautiful binding and is very nice for show and handling. I own many books of this type used for divination through bibliomancy and practice this magick daily.
I can see how the book would be fun for parties and get togethers or used for simple novelty. The book contains basic wisdom with depth that barely breaks the surface. I can easily compare it to the Magic 8 Ball toy.
For practitioners of divination using bibliomancy, the book is difficult to communicate with. Where, in my experience, you would normally open a book to it's page and it will speak it's wisdom to you, you have to "speak" to this one first, making the results often incomprehensive, nonsensical, or whimsical.
The method of operating with this book for serious diviners seems to work backwards and unnaturally.
At the risk of sounding silly, I've made several attempts to create a relationship with this book to no avail.
My experience with the book thus far; it is a beautiful book. I recommend it for novelty. The dollar value is mostly related to it's velvety cover. I would certainly recommend this book as a gift for teenagers or perhaps someone unfamiliar with this form of divining to get a general understanding of how it works, and not for someone who practices this often as the depth of the quotes in the book are not as meaty or hearty as I am accustomed to.
For divination and seeking wisdom and answers with far greater depth and dimension, I recommend the Susan Hayward collection. (Bag of Jewels, Guide for the Advanced Soul, etc.)

Eloquent Nonsense.......2006-07-29
In the beginning of this book the author gives this advice,
"Hold a problem in your mind and open this book to any page and there will be your answer."
Talk about nonsense.
She goes on to say,
"How To Use This Guide
You have a problem or need guidance to help you make a decision. Picture it clearly in your mind; meditate on it so that the mind gradually subsides into stillness. This allows you to draw on your subconcious and intuitive powers to respond."
And her evidence for that incredible nonsense? Nothing. On top of that the book is filled with quotes from others, mostly famous, so it's not original at all let alone helpful. For example here are some quotes,
"Every end is a new beginning."
Treasure.......2006-07-05
I moved recently and was unpacking books when I came upon this gem. Received it many years ago from a friend and have given copies away to others. This book helps you calm down and guides you with words of wisdom. A must have for anyone who loves quiet time.
Inspirational.......2006-04-24
This little book of life offers some of the most powerful quotes and passages available throught the literature of self improvement. Great book to use on a daily basis for entering your journey of the day. Open the book when you reach a challenging moment in your life and theres your solution. Highly recommended.
A wonderful addition to my collection........2004-01-08
I felt the need to write this review and sing my praises about this collection after receiving other books in this genre by a different author which proved to be greatly disappointing.
I own many books of this type used for divination through bibliomancy and practice this magick daily.
This book has an attractive cover with its inside text written in calligraphy script. It also has a fabric tassel/bookmark attached from the binding which makes a nice touch. The quote on each page credits the origin from which the quote came which is nice to have available for when I go searching for other motivational quotes. It has also steered me in a good direction on purchasing other meaningful books because of the references to the author and/or book titles.
For the purpose of divination through bibilomancy, the collection of Susan Haywards books has my top recommendations. They are easy to communicate with and have a very nice reciprocating energy. The quotes have depth, dimension, and a good loving energy within them.
I have bought several of them as gifts. The books of this collection will most likely remain on my gift-giving list for many years to come.
My one and only gripe is that the picture shown is not like the book I received. Mine had different lettering which seemed half as nice as the one on the picture, but hey...the book isn't about its cover.
A little "guide" that WORKS (if you let it).......2002-04-20
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! About 11 years ago a series of events took place that left me emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically drained. I literally felt like things were hopeless. Then I got the paperback version of this book...and I mean it when I say it helped change my daily life.
I followed the author's suggestions (I was willing to try anything): I held the book in my two hands, held the problem or dilemma in my mind, meditated a bit on it, let my mind (and body) be still...then closed my eyes, made my request in a question form...and opened the book. I would always open it and only look at the page that I "felt" I was being led to by one of my fingers.
Most of the time I was amazed: the quotation on the page TRULY referred to my problem and gave me some insight. And I (more often than not) acted on it. Once in a while I'd get an answer that didn't seem like an answer, so I'd reframe the question and start the process again.
Years later I gifted this book to someone in trouble. And I truly missed not having it. Then, last month, I bought it AGAIN...this time in hardcover.
I STRONGLY recommend this book. Even if you read it from cover to cover (which is not really how it is designed to be used) you'd gain a wealth of insight, since the quotations -- from yogis, to Eileen Cassidy, to the Bible, to Walt Whitman -- are the BEST to help steer your thinking (and some say guide your intuition) towards helpful, often healing solutions.
This is a small but potent book. Great to read. Great to use as a little voice that will answer your questions as you randomly turn to a page after a bit of meditation. And, most of all, GREAT to GIFT to friends, family or someone who's facing some difficult challenges. Once you use this book you'll never want to be without it.

The Book of Mystical Chapters wants to slow you down. Its 300 brief meditations, drawn from the writings of the earliest Christian contemplatives, are meant to be read over the course of 300 days. The book's translator and editor, John Anthony McGuckin, explains that this is how early Christian pilgrims learned the wisdom of the Desert Fathers, ascending through three stages of spiritual understanding, from the practical to the transcendent. Pilgrims repeated these meditations until each one broke "like a fruit on the tongue of the monk and revealed its inner flavor to the searching mind." The Book of Mystical Chapters suggests that readers ask of each aphorism, "How have we already experienced it; how could it illuminate a truth about our own heart or the troubles of our friends' hearts or the secret ways that God wishes to develop our seeking soul?" If you're sick of wasting time waiting at the bus stop, waiting between appointments, or waiting to go deeper in faith, maybe this is just the thing for you. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
The early Christian monks of Egypt, Syria, and Palestine were the spiritual heroes of their age—fleeing the security of civilization for the desert, where they sought God in lives of prayer, contemplation, and radical simplicity. This book is a portable collection of their teachings, and those of their contemplative contemporaries, ranging from the fourth through the eleventh centuries. It is arranged to the traditional model of three ascending "books": Praktikos (practice), Theoretikos (theory), and Gnosis (knowledge). Each book consists of 100 "sentences"—aphorisms or thoughts. Each sentence is intended to be read and meditated upon for an entire day—just as the monks themselves might have done as they went about their work.

The Christian Mystical Tradition.......2006-08-30
Christianity has long since forgotten the old saying, "God became what man is so that man can become what God is." Christianity is not merely about "getting saved" and essentially ending your walk with Christ right then and there. Christianity has always been about theosis, becoming holy as God is holy. "Salvation" cannot be reduced to a mere "get out of hell free card"; it is also healing. It is also transformation. Follow this book, and you are well on your way to becoming a Christian mystic; one who experiences God continually.
"A lion is known by its paw".......2006-05-22
In the bookstore my heart was really cold and depressed, and oppressed. I was saying the prayer, but not getting anywhere. I mean the prayer is always good, but I couldn't find any peace. This book helped to break through this malaise, and I was grateful. It helped me see my situation of truly needing help, and it was an avenue of receiving help.
Orthodox Christians believe that the saints write out of the direct experience of the Light of God, and they literally write words of light and love, the Love that the Lord Jesus has shared with them, which is Himself. It is the glory He shares with the Father, that comes from the Holy Spirit. This is given in a measure and type perfectly suited to each person. Father John, in the introduction, explains that the Holy Spirit usually reveals Himself to people just starting to seriously seek Him in a way that is different from people who have learned to humbly live for Him, who suffer in their life with Him. In trying to follow His commandments, they suffer at their inability to follow them, and at the obstacles they encounter, inside and outside, when they try to live out a command such as Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself. It is a kind of quiet war, sometimes. So the first stage, I think, is learning to live in this way, that makes you humble, because you see, with the help of grace, how you are not Holy like God, and you don't fit in with Him, and this makes you realize that you deeply need help, so you call out from your heart, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God have mercy on me a sinner." In the second stage He consoles and teaches by sometimes appearing, and sometimes withdrawing. When He seems to leave them without help of grace (He doesn't really leave), they suffer from the war more and become humble, because they remember they need the grace that saves them in the war, so they won't act mean and ugly, or do other ugly things that are not the way the people in Heaven live. Then there is a higher stage of grace, above the war, closer to God, but also with a heavier responsibility. Advice of this type is given in the 3rd section of the book. There are three sections each suited to these three types of people. I'm sorry I don't explain it well, but he does. It is good to read his introduction first, because this is a living tradition, and it good to hear from someone who puts it into practice in his own life, and who belongs to the same tradition as those who wrote the original advice.
Some people, like myself, may have been introduced to the Lord almost as a friend who is always with you, but although you might try to live out what is in the Bible, it is on your own terms, according to what you think is right. It might be hard to see God as Holy (not as a buddy) or it might be hard to know who to trust with authority, because there are a lot of teachers and preachers out there. I gradually trusted the saints from this tradition, the most, but it took a long time. At first I used Catholic saints, like St. Theresa and Saint Francis as my guides, and they are very good, but I found the Orthodox tradition was the oldest, and focused on living such a way where it is possible for Jesus Christ to reveal Himself to you as Light. It doesn't view this as an isolated experience of grace, as many mystics receive, but the normal way of life for people in Heaven with God, or who want to live there. This book helps me to learn what their manner of life is, so I might practice now what I am going to be doing forever, anyway, and so fit in with them. An analogy might be the Hobbits who learned about the way the People of the West lived, suffered on a quest with them, and finally went to live with them. I feel the saints, especially the Mother of God, directly help you have the right attitude and relation to Him, and you can feel the difference after a while through contact with the holy things from the Church. The writings in this book are an example. Everything in the Orthodox church is directed toward seeing Him, and living in union with Him, their prayers, sacraments, songs, icons, everything. I am not meaning to proselytize, but rather I want to say Orthodox view things holistically, so to speak. You can't separate one aspect of the tradition, like this book, from the whole. Of course, anyone is welcome to read it, and benefit, but it is also the tip of an iceberg. A quote from the book: "A lion is known by his paw..."
People familiar with the Narnia books will remember, He's not a tame Lion.
An added note- although I already owned many of the sources of his quotes, in the Philokalia, it also introduced me to some new saints, and it is translated, organized, and presented so well that it is worth it to get it. Also it is good for my friends who want to want to learn this life of prayer but wouldn't be comfortable wading through difficult texts that may not apply to them. This book seems to find you and help you where you are.
Slow down, you move too fast!.......2003-12-18
These "chapters" range in length from one sentence to a page and a half, with most about the length of a short paragraph. They are arranged into three sections ("the threefold ascent") of 100 chapters each.
Don't be tempted, as I was, to read several each day. These chapters were designed to be memorized and then meditated upon, no more than one a day. This is what the translator, John Anthony McGuckin, suggests in his introduction, and his advice is sound.
While many of these spiritual statements are deceptively simple, each one is worthy of serious ruminating.
I recommend this volume highly, but please take your time.
Related titles worthy of consideration are: "The Illumined Heart," by Frederica Mathewes-Green; "The Mountain of Silence," by Kyriacos C. Markides; and "The Art of Prayer," compiled by Igumen Chariton of Valamo.
Straightforword advice from the masters.......2003-09-17
This is a nice collection of short adages that are directed to the seeker of Christ. Assuming that we are created for union with God in Christ and the Spirit, the authors of this collection, all experts from experience, give practical wisdom and advice.
"If you are serious about the life of prayer, take care to be very merciful, for in this way you shall receive a hundredfold reward and even greater things in the future age," writes St. John Climacus.
I never allowed myself to go to bed while I still felt resentment against a person. And as far as I was able, I never allowed anyone else to go to bed either, as long as they still felt resentment against me," said Abba Agathon.
This is the sort of tenor of the book. Other really useful books in this regard would include bishop Kallistos Ware's classic "The Orthodox Way", along with Markides' "The Silent Mountain" and Robin Amis' "A Different Christinaity". If you like anthologies, a good one with useful notes is Olivier Clement's "The Roots of Christian Mysticism". Enjoy!
More than three hundred short meditations.......2002-12-05
Ably translated and with an informative introduction by Orthodox Christian Priest John Anthony McGuckin (Professor of Early Church History, Union Theological Seminary, New York City), The Book Of Mystical Chapters: Meditations On The Soul's Ascent From The Desert Fathers And Other Early Christian Contemplatives is a hallowed collection of more than three hundred short meditations written by Christians from the second through the fourteenth centuries. Many of these meditations were written by the Desert Fathers, monks who deliberately left behind the corruption of city life for the isolated deserts of Egypt and Palestine. These brief yet moving and heartfelt meditations focus upon practice, theory, gnosis, embracing spiritual enlightenment, and the expansion of one's mind and soul. The Book Of Mystical Chapters is very highly recommended reading for all serious students of Christian Theology, History, and Spirituality, regardless of denominational background or affiliation.

Whirling and tumbling through adolescence, I remember longing for some kind of magic manual, a guidebook to point me in the right direction. Today's teens will be blessed to find just such a wish come true in Teen Sunshine Reflections. Like a wise and faithful friend, it will always be there to turn to during trying times, quiet times, and any time the need to connect and check one's bearings arises.
Important topics for teens like Relationships, Individuality and Tolerance are thoughtfully combined with meaningful words on Spirituality, Forgiveness, Gratitude, and Encouragement. While this book of prose and poetry is directed at teens I can imagine their parents borrowing a copy so they too could benefit from the heartlifting, inspirational writing tucked between the shining yellow cover.
Great Book!.......2002-04-09
As a teenager, I loved Teen Sunshine Reflections and I feel all teens would love and appreciate this book. Many of the prayers and poems were written by teens to encourage and inspire other teens. I would recommend this book to any teen whether they are facing challenges in their life or just want to read an inspiration book.

the best way to start the day.......2006-07-25
This is a little gem of a book that I read often and have given as a gift at least 1/2 dozen times. It is inspriational and ideal you want to have more on your mind than the minutae of the day!
Great little book, very thought-provoking.......2004-09-02
Along the lines of thought-a-day or Daily Word publications, this small book has 100 pages of quotes and inspiration. The book is NOT religious, or even overly spiritual. Its quotes are drawn from mystics (Rumi, Tao philosophy) and non-mystics (John Updike, Bill Moyers) alike. Following each quote is a suggestion to apply the idea to your life that day. Some are active suggestions (make a self-portrait), while some are contemplative (find the extraordinary in the ordinary), while others are applied all day long (throw caution to the wind).
An example:
4 -- Try Not to Panic
"I will try not to panic, to keep my standard of living modest, and to work steadily, even shyly, in the spirit of those medieval carvers who so fondly sculpted the undersides of choir seats." - John Updike, quoted in "Life" magazine
"Act today without expecting to receive any recognition or reward in return."
Each of these little gems is a good point for contemplation or even meditation. None what you'll find here is new to the world, and much of it is repeated in multiple sources. Nonetheless, the quotes and ideas are thoughtfully collected and amount to a portable collection of inspiration. The introduction is as valuable as the rest of the book in reminding us to feed the soul daily. Highly recommended.

Book Description
There's a fresh take on an old standby, the book of quotations. The difference with Wisdom for the Soul is in the selection and organization of the quotations. Each has been chosen for its universal application and poetic quality, grouped into one of 220 themes. While the usual subjects, are represented, the collection encompasses newer psychological territory such as Actualization, Avoidance/Denial, Chaos/Uncertainty, Polarity, Synergy, Unconscious, and more.
Although the primary aim of the collection is self-help for the individual, with extensive cross-references to factors that foster or deter growth and well-being, the material will appeal to the quotation collector, speech-writer, and the general reader.

wow--and I mean WOW!.......2006-12-16
First let me say that I have spent the last several years reading close to 3,000 books in a sort of spiritual journey/quest for "enlightenment" (whatever that means, and assuming there is is such a thing.) I've read just about all the great "classic" works--everything by Plato and Jesus, tons by Buddha, along with mega-amounts of ancient and modern philosophers and thinkers, both Eastern and Western, etc. that I could get my hands on. Yet this book has managed to astound me. It's close to 800 pages, and huge. Unless you go on a non-stop reading binge for a couple days, you'll take weeks to read this entire thing. Which is just fine, because on almost *every* page there is a quote that either (a) helps me see something from a perspective I haven't quite encountered before, or (b) expresses a thought i've already encountered, but expresses it in a way that is so pithy and fresh and memorable that I want to run out and share it with the people I know (and in some cases I've done just that!). And then you will want to read it again. And again. And again . . .
The book is very well organized. Each chapter covers from between 1 to 7 pages or so of a different topic--e.g. "compassion"-- with quotes arranged in roughly chronological order of the year of the person being quoted. The headings to each chapter have extensive cross-references so that the reader can look up related entries, either similar concepts or opposite concepts. An extensive bibliography at the back lists all the entries in which each author appears. One minor gripe I have is that the source of the quotes is not as well documented as it could have been. Some of the quotes have specific works listed, but many do not, so that (a) the reader is left merely to trust that the compiler is correct in quoting from that speaker, and (b) the reader has no way to read further in the work quoted. Still, wisdom is wisdom, and even if there is no way to verify who said what, an anonymous truth found on a crumpled up piece of paper on the street is still truth!
Also, the reader might think of a topic or two that should have been given a separate entry but wasn't (e.g. there is no entry for "beauty" which in my mind is essential for a book on "spiritual wisdom.") But still the entries are fairly exhaustive in their coverage overall.
One other minor gripe is that the author focuses much more on modern (1800s and especially 1900's) thinkers than on ancient wisdom. People like Plato, Aristotle, Jesus, or Buddha for example (all of whom I'm quite familiar with their work), could have, and should have been, quoted much more extensively than they were, especially when numerous modern, very recent authors were given far more quotes than any of them. Still, as I said above, truth is truth, regardless who says that truth.
This is a reference book that you will keep not just on your shelf, but on your coffeetable or nightstand, for easy access, and perhaps permanently. And you will enthusiastically recommend it to everyone you know. And you will loan it out. And you will buy it as a gift for people. In fact, if I the money, I'd buy a copy and give one to all my family and friends--but alas, I don't have such money. Probably because the book is so huge in volume, a cloth (hard) binding is very helpful to keep the book's integrity intact. Nevertheless, I hope this book is released in a less expensive paperback form soon. Either way, though, this book is well worth the price (and probably more). You will *not* regret buying this!
Wonderful Book.......2006-08-03
I love the inspiration available in this book. Im a quote lover and choose to live by the quotes of the great minds. This book offers a wide variety of wisdon that aligns with the soul. Great Book and even better if you buy mine which expends on quotes of the great minds as well as providing structured journaling. Higly recommended for those seeking true wisdon.
This book is like having a council of wise people from five millenia in your home to offer you life-transforming wisdom.......2006-07-18
I can't speak highly enough of the riches contained in this book - an extraordinary treasury, containing potent seeds of life-enriching wisdom, highly compactified, fructifying patterns of intelligence. This book creates a direct line of communication with the quintessential wisdom of the world's greatest minds and spiritual traditions.
Each time I open the book there are messages of wisdom that feel uncannily perfect for me, addressing current situations and concerns. And because the author has consciously selected quotes that speak to the potential within the individual, they stimulate the wisdom that lies dormant within us, resonating with the seeds that are already there. Each time I read the selection of quotes on any given subject, I walk away feeling empowered and inspired.
It's quite extraordinary when one thinks of the transmission of these seeds of wisdom, which take root and create positive "fruits of the spirit." It's like having an entire council of wise elders at one's fingertip, available for powerfully transforming advice at every moment.
This is one of the best investments of $50 I can imagine. This is a book that everyone should own as a life-long reference, no matter what age or point in one's life journey. I plan to give it to my nephew for his high school graduation, knowing it will provide guidance for him as he embarks on his own. And it's a wonderful resource for finding meaningful quotes to share with friends.

A beautiful book, inside and out.......2006-05-26
This is one of those books that you will pick up time and again. It is a collection of passages, all around the theme of "Grace." But it is much more than just a random selection of quotes; considerable thought has been put into grouping them into a series of concepts, such as "Soul," "Heart," "Action." Aronson draws from a very wide ranging set of authors and speakers, from well known historical figures (such as Aesop, Emerson, Dickens) to current day writers and personalities (the Dalai Lama, Arthur Ashe, Leo Buscaglia). This is not at all a set of 'sappy' quotes, but rather a thoughtful compendium of all that 'grace' really is, should be, and can be.
Beautifully laid out, with a simple but very appealing cover, the book will make a great present.
