Old school tricks still apply today........2007-05-15
Some potential buyers might be turned off by the date of publish, but to be honest, nothing has really changed in the last 20 years in suspension tuning and design. The same principles apply today, because we still have to deal with the same laws of physics. Topics cover everything from alignment, springs, and shocks, to antiroll bars, rear axle control devices, and tires. The tire section is probably less useful, since tires have in fact evolved quite a lot since the book was written. But pretty much every other aspect of the book is applicable today.
Maybe new systems have improved the way OEM systems work, but the principles in this book will help those interested in improving their suspension systems to understand why their car acts a certain way, and how to address it. Furthermore, this book is useful for anyone from the shadetree mechanic to the serious racing enthusiast, with plenty of detailed information but enough lay-speak for the uninitiated.
Definitely consider this book before you make any modification to your vehicle. Too many people make poor decisions that make their vehicles actually handle worse than they might if some thought had been given to the different options out there. In other words, 20" wheels, a 27" rear sway bar mated to a 20" front bar, and the stiffest possible coilovers are not good ways to make your car handle, unlike most of the "tuners" out there might think, and this book will explain why.
All the principles of handling!.......2007-04-10
Some of the other reviews mention that this is for older cars. Maybe so, but the principles remain to be true. Since I am working with an '83 El Camino for street/strip, it has the answers I have been looking for. I want the car to handle on the street, but be effective on the dragstrip. This book gives the info needed to make the decisions about that compromise. And as an education about the forces actually acting on a moving vehicle it hits the target. I highly recommend it!

good to know.......2007-01-11
Hi,
I'm involved with building rally raid (off road) comp cars and I think this book is very good for a medium level builder. Its better then a lot of other books that are veeery basic...even this one is not so "in deep"...
Good info to know.
Decent.......2007-01-10
This book is an older book and does not have information on newer vehicles. However it does cover a very wide range of ideas. The most useful information i got out of this book was on tires, rims, and other basic handling modifications such as working down-force wings and toe, camber angles ect ect. alot of the information i learned i was able to back up from internet sources aswell so this book is good it just didnt have exactly what i was looking for. if you are looking to make your honda civic or even dodge viper, for that matter, handle better you need to look on forums for the individual car. for learning about how to make cars in general handle better and what characteristics to look for when purchasing parts for those cars. this book will teach you the ideas needed. but for a simple you should bolt these pieces on and it will do this. look elsewhere because this book just shows you what each thing does and how to pick / create parts yourself.
good information. not so useful for my vehicle but still very good
(also, book is geared toward American vehicles)*ex- ford mustang*
Old, but a very good primer on race car dynamics........2006-10-03
Yes it's old, yes it refers to bias ply tires, yes the most advance cars in the book are aluminum monocoques. It's still a very clear and concise look at how a racing or sports car works. Slip angles, weight transfer, suspension rates, differential action, unsprung vs sprung weight, and zillion other topics are covered in clearly understood text. Most of the race shops I worked for and all the racers I know have a dogeared copy of this book lying around somewhere. It's worth the asking price for the vocabulary alone. If you are tempted to buy it, buy it!

Customer Reviews:
The best I've found.......2001-04-25
Practical and Understandable. Don Alexander has some kind of gift for making all of this stuff make sense. He explains what each suspension component does and how changing it will affect the car. The information is applicable to designing your own suspension from the ground up as well as modifying the car you have. He includes examples of cars he has tuned with good before-and-after comparisons. Common misconceptions are dispelled with logic and evidence, giving you exactly the information you need to make important decisions about your car.
Good Source for Beginners.......1999-12-06
I had no knowledge of how a suspension works or its parts until I read this book. Descriptions were pretty detailed and I understood them, so should you. Shocks, struts, springs, anti-sway bars, and even driving techniques. Gives you a page to help you tune your own car and examples of how you should go about this. Gave me everything I needed except a skidpad. The only downside is the fact it's a little outdated. Time to make an updated one.
A very good technical description of handling theory.......1998-12-06
Mr. Alexander provides a complete and concise overview of vehicle handling. Technical theory is explaned in a easy to read manner. Through the use of project cars he is able to provide examples that would be applicable to anyone. A troubleshooting guide is also provided to correct observed problems. A first rate book.
