Outstanding Book for Technicians.......2007-04-16
This is an outstanding book by a knowledgeable author that provides the basic know-how and skills that a technician who maintains or just wants to learn or study aircraft gas turbine engines will find useful and helpful. The book is well written in a readable and easy to follow format that provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of jet propulsion. The author clearly presents the concepts and principles of modern gas turbine engines with no complicated formulas.
The reader will learn the various components of a gas turbine engine including the intake design, compressors, turbines, combustion chamber designs, and the jet pipe and how thrust is produced as well as the modern maintenance, repair and overhaul techniques and philosophies.
The book has great explanations, diagrams and figures that the reader will find useful and helpful. I recommend the book not only to technicians but also to beginning aeronautical and mechanical engineering students who need a basic but comprehensive understanding of gas turbine engines and how they are maintained.
Very Good Book.......2007-03-11
This is a very good book for gas turbine engine technology. It is helpful over the whole subject, but having detailed sections of individual engines (really the best sellers) was an extra bonus. It's in my work bookcase, one of only a few.
Perfect.......2004-12-23
This book is what you need if you want to know HOW aircraft engines are made. Since it's thought for technicians, it doesn'cover (almost) at all thermodynamics, no math, just a few basic physical principles on aircraft gas turbines. This is the real point: more photos, shematics, diagrams then equations (rigor mortis).
You will learn how are Gas Turbines made, what kind of engine is currently being used in what kind of aircraft, how is the fuel system made, plus a much more.
Buy it without esitation.
A compelling reference souce.......2000-11-06
This volume is the best publication for aeronautical gas turbine technology. It is a powerful tool as a reference and as a didactic implement.
Theory. The development of theory is quite simple and straightforward. Being intended for technicians, the mathematical level is really easy, nevertheless the associated phenomenons are solidly explained. If the reader is looking for a more advanced maths dissection, he has to search a different book, conversely this treatment is the best complement to theoretical study: here concepts came alive and the mathematical set of solutions to equations are translated in real stuff.
Materials and technical evaluation. The edition copes with the advanced techniques introduced in more recent designs and products. The previous editions were full of excerpts from manufacturer pubblications or other technical papers, the current one is enriched by new illustrations and detailed explanations of advanced research. Drawings and graphs were the best facets of former editions and still they are, literally boosting reader's learning curve.
Engines. A wide selection of engines is avalable as examples, each one deeply dissected, showing typical arrangements and design solutions. This accurate study of construcion details and manufacturing techniques is explanatory since it shows the real article as designed, produced and maintained, focusing on each part functionality and it is real as it gets!
Great book for Gas Turbine Technician students!.......1998-11-29
I found this book to be intensively desciptive when I was taking my gas turbine technician course and would recommend it to any one who wishes to understand the concepts of the gas turbine engines.

Product Description
This text provides a complete introduction to gas turbine and rocket propulsion for aerospace and mechanical engineers. Building on the very successful Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion, textbook coverage has been expanded to include rocket propulsion and the material on gas dynamics has been dramatically improved. The text is divided into four parts: basic concepts and gas dynamics; analysis of rocket propulsion systems; parametric (design point) and performance (off-design) analysis of air breathing propulsion systems; and analysis and design of major gas turbine engine components (fans, compressors, turbines, inlets, nozzles, main burners, and afterburners).
Design concepts are introduced early (aircraft and rocket performance in an introductory chapter) and integrated throughout. Written with extensive student input on the design of the book, the book builds upon definitions and gradually develops the thermodynamics, gas dynamics, rocket engine analysis, and gas turbine engine principles. The book contains over 100 worked examples and numerous homework problems so concepts are applied after they are introduced. Over 600 illustrations and pictures show basic concepts, trends, and design examples.
Eight computer programs accompany the text, which allow for rapid calculation of trends, what if questions, conceptual design, homework problems, and homework verification. The software runs in the Windows operating system on PC-compatible systems.

Top Textbook on Engine Performance.......2007-04-05
This is the best textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This book is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. It is being used for a basic course in gas turbine engine and a followup course in engine component design...
Good content, but who proof read it??.......2007-02-14
The foreword by Hans von Ohain is very good. I always like the aerospace textbooks that have some sort of history or commentary before getting into the equations. The content of the book is very thorough, and the equations are often grouped into step-by-step methods to analyze an engine which can be imported into a program like Excel very easily. The support programs are good enough for most applications that a student will run into. However, there appears to be a very large amount of typographical errors in this book. Most of them are minor and can be caught quickly, but I have seen a couple of major equations (2.76 for example) with errors. Considering that the textbook is for students who aren't always used to these equations, this can lead to a lot of confusion. This is compounded by the use of both BE and SI units in the text. These same problems occurred in the last edition. Overall I would still recommend using the book for a class, but beware of the errors.

Book Description
Aircraft Engines and Gas Turbines is widely used as a text in the United States and abroad, and has also become a standard reference for professionals in the aircraft engine industry. Unique in treating the engine as a complete system at increasing levels of sophistication, it covers all types of modern aircraft engines, including turbojets, turbofans, and turboprops, and also discusses hypersonic propulsion systems of the future. Performance is described in terms of the fluid dynamic and thermodynamic limits on the behavior of the principal components: inlets, compressors, combustors, turbines, and nozzles. Environmental factors such as atmospheric pollution and noise are treated along with performance.
This new edition has been substantially revised to include more complete and up-to-date coverage of compressors, turbines, and combustion systems, and to introduce current research directions. The discussion of high-bypass turbofans has been expanded in keeping with their great commercial importance. Propulsion for civil supersonic transports is taken up in the current context. The chapter on hypersonic air breathing engines has been expanded to reflect interest in the use of scramjets to power the National Aerospace Plane. The discussion of exhaust emissions and noise and associated regulatory structures have been updated and there are many corrections and clarifications.
Jack L. Kerrebrock is Richard Cockburn Maclaurin Professor of Aeronautic's and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fantastic!.......2006-02-15
The title is an understatement, Kay covers every single development in this area in Germany, even oddball designs I'd never heard of. I've seen books with encyclopedic lists of engines, I've seen books with oodles of details on a single design, but I've never seen a book that has BOTH. And even those encyclopedic ones don't cover some of the engines he has in here.
I can't recommend it enough -- if you're interested in the history of jet power, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Now, I wonder if I can convince him to publish a follow-up volume on British engines?

The book is well written and easy to follow with clear explanations and numerous illustrations and pictures to reinforce the basic concepts, trends, and design examples. The book also has several worked examples and many homework problems all which help the reader to grasp and apply the concepts. This is one of the best books available on the market on gas turbine engines and is therefore highly recommended.
Best I have seen.......2006-11-07
I'm a senior aerospace engineering student and am the propulsion lead for my aircraft design team. This book is very readable, understandable, and applicable to what I'm doing. I've looked through several other books and this one (as well as Mattingly's Aircraft Engine Design) has the most useful information and has been very helpful.
complete turbine book.......2005-05-25
This has got to be the most complete turbine book I have ever seen. Containing pretty much everything on cycle analysis, it even provides a good review of thermodynamics and compressible flow. It does, however, look to be a little difficult to teach from with eqautions and graphs flying about, but to the knowledged user it will serve as a great and complete reference. (There are some errors in the text you might want to correct found on the book's webpage.)

A Very Good Book With Lots of Useful Information.......2000-09-06
I bought the book "Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion" in August of 1999 and I still read it almost everyday. It is a very interesting book, but it has a serious flaw in that there are so many errors, it appears that the editor(s) were asleep or out to lunch. It was a great disservice to the author, as I think he was shortchanged by the publisher. Being a former member of the USAF, myself I feel that his work was more meticulous than this. Perhaps the publisher was in such a hurry to hit the presses at all costs, that this is the result. This seems to be the trend in recent years. I believe that one of the major networks did and expose regarding major publishing house oversights in this area.

Money well spent!!!.......2003-05-13
This book is a wonderfully rich source of information on the developement of quite a few turbine engines. The information is well researched and concise, given in a format that is broken down by the manufacturer. There is alot of information on some small turbine engines developed for cruise missle applications that I have not seen elsewhere. There are a decent amount of photos that give a good sense of most of the engines. I wonder though with all the research that was done for this book if many more interresting photos were left out?
The introduction is good and the information they present with the problems involved in design and production of small scale turbine engines is very interresting.
All in all this is money well spent for anyone who enjoys the history of gas turbine engines.
