5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for college-level students of transportation and urban planning.......2006-08-17

Edited by Gabriel Roth, whose expertise includes twenty years of service as Transportation Economist for the World Bank, Street Smart: Competition, Entrepreneurship, and the Future of Roads is an anthology of essays by learned authors discussing both theory and practice for private, market-based alternatives for road services from licensing vehicles and drivers to management of government-owned road facilities to franchising, outright private ownership, and more. America's current road transportation system is beset with traffic congestion, unsafe conditions, high costs, political corruption, environmental degradation, pork barrel pet projects and much more. In an era of rising national debt, Street Smart is more needed than ever as a source of ideas for more economic and safer means to look after transportation infrastructure.

5 out of 5 stars Endorsement for Street Smart.......2006-05-16

Private turnpikes were commonplace in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries but they eventually succumbed to competition from railways and onerous government regulations. Street Smart makes an eloquent and convincing argument that the time is ripe for the private sector to make a comeback with a boost from modern electronic tolling technology and innovative contract designs. Chapters are organized into five parts that complement each other nicely. Early chapters explain why market forces allocate resources efficiently and describe various roles for the private sector in supplying road infrastructure and services. Later chapters describe the history of private roads and some recent, encouraging, developments with privatization, and suggest alternative ways forward in the course of privatization. Written by leading economists, engineers and other professionals, Street Smart is essential reading for academics, policy analysts and policy makers, as well as firms contemplating involvement themselves.

Book Description

Richards shows that attractive and practical alternatives to a car dependent society are possible. With the growth of car ownership and use reaching crisis proportions in our cities it is imperative to find and implement alternatives if cities are to survive and prosper. He reveals how transport technology is developing, in particular, showing how it can be integrated into the urban environment. The book opens with a look at the "best" of current transportation systems and goes on to explore such advanced technologies as automated highways, covered cities, monorails, new elevated systems, smart cars, guided buses, as well as intelligent highways, and car-free housing. The importance, too, of simple measures such as walking and cycling are covered as being an essential part of any future city as well as that of an "integrated transport" if people are to be encouraged to get out of their cars.

5 out of 5 stars Future Transport in Cities.......2002-02-13

A compatriot (and friend) of the late Reyner Banham challenges the American addiction to cars, and shows how they do it better in Curitiba, Hanover, and Portland, WA (to pick three of his many examples). It's a brilliant analysis of how things work in the real world and the promise of new technologies. Mandatory reading for Angelenos; buy an extra copy and try to instill a sense of guilt in a student driving her trophy SUV.

    Book Description

Current trends in transport, particularly the rise in CO_2 emissions, indicate that major changes in technology, public policy and individual behaviour are necessary to make the transport system more compatible with environmental sustainability. What then are the possible futures for sustainable systems of transport? In this book future scenarios are constructed on the basis of the recently developed 'spider model'. This model constructs an evaluation framework - based along spatial, institutional, economic and socio-psychological axes - which visualises the core factors that influence transport systems. These factors can operate either separately or in combination - this interaction creates scenarios which range from market-oriented to regulatory systems, and from individual to collective modes of transport. Drawing on the work of a range of transport analysts, the book suggests that the current trend away from sustainability and collective systems is likely to continue, but when sound policies are introduced, a sustainable transport system becomes a feasible option.

        Product Description

The automobile once promised a dazzling world of speed, freedom, and convenience, magically conveying people wherever the road would take them. Given these alluring qualities, it is not surprising the people around the world enthusiastically embraced the dream of car ownership. But societies that have built their transport systems around the automobile are now waking up to a much harsher reality. The problems created by overreliance on the car are outweighing the benefits. These problems are numerous and widespread. Traffic congestion and air polution plague all major cities, and oil dependence makes economies vulnerable. Metropolises with streets designed for cars instead of people are increasingly unlivable. In developing countries, automobiles serve only a small elite and leave the vast majority with inadequate transport. In Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, recent reforms could add the problems of automobile dependence to already overwhelming economic and environmental crises. Improving automobile technology can never completely solve these troubles. Enhanced fuel efficiency and polution control are at least partly offset by the sheer amount of additional driving, as some 35 million new cars roll off assembly lines each year. Even in the United States, where emissions controls are most effective, air polution is worsening. And no matter how clean or fuel-efficient automobiles become, they still cause traffic jams. Automobile dominance creates a set of problems so relentless that societies in coming decades will have no choice but to seek transport alternatives. A new, more rational approach to transportation is need, one that puts the automobile in its rightful place as one among many options for travel.
