One of the best motorcycle books ever.......2004-12-04
This book is worth every penny just for the photography alone. The fascinating and informative text is like a bonus. This is the real Harley story, not the corporate propoganda garbage the Motor Company puts out. The Hunter Thompson essay is hilarious. Buy it.
America's Greatest Passion.......2004-10-22
Outside the bedroom. Boys prefer the pictures but there are wonderful marvy words for the girls, even the children can play with this. and for rainy days when your home alone or stuck at the work place read "THE SECOND COMING OF AGE" by: Vedrine, the greatest Harley semi-fiction ever written.
Wow !.......2003-04-14
Wow ! That is the first thing that comes to mind when going through this book. Although I have quite some books about HD I'm very impressed by this huge book.
Written by the best authors around, with stunning photographs that you haven't seen in other books and printed on thick high quality paper this book is great value for money.
The book describes all the different parts of HD history by going through all the models that have been produced the last 100 years. Not so much the technical descriptions are to be found but more the stories behind the models. The TC-88 story as an example is like a fairy tale if you're a HD-lover. How did they come up with the idea, what did they do and what problems they encountered, how they solved it and why certain things are the way they are is all in this story.
If youre looking for a book that describes all the different colours, serialnumbers and options for each modelyear than this is NOT your book, but if you like the story of HD, beautifull pictures of almost every model and good stories and tales by the best writers that don't hesitate and order this heavy book.
I would still buy it if it was twice the price! It's absolutely fantastic!
This is the TRUE AND UNCENSORED STORY........2002-12-17
I compared this book to the other Harley books out there, and this is the one to buy. The story here is not the "canned" story put out by the factory, but the true story as told by real Harley aficionados. And, this book has writing from Hunter S. Thompson, you can't get him in the "factory" book! The photos are great and the writing is interesting and concise. By the way, this is a BIG book, so clear space on the coffee table. If you are a Harley fan, you are going to love this book.
Best Freakin' Harley book ever.......2002-11-27
This is the ultimate Harley book. It includes tons of photos that I have never seen before and there are 10 or 20 authors who contributed, each in an area of expertise. Very cool concept! If I had a coffee table, this would be the centerpiece. It is a huge book in both pounds and inches, so beware.

Harley-Davidson Lore: Origins Through Panhead is a collection of black-and-white photos culled from the Harley-Davidson archives spanning the first 60 years of the famous motorcycle manufacturer. For most of the book the photos, which date back as far as 1903, are simply allowed to stand on their own, uncluttered by text. In the back of the book, author Herbert Wagner supplements smaller reproductions of the plates with explanations of each photo's origin and bits of the Harley-Davidson mythos. Gearheads will love the meticulously chronicled changes in the Harley-Davidson design (were you aware that 1910 was the last year of the "beehive" motor with horizontal cooling fins in the head area?) and model nicknames like the "Silent Gray Fellow." Fans can track the Harley's growing popularity as a sport and pleasure bike, as well as its workhorse side as a delivery vehicle and military tool. Though Harley-Davidson novices may be briefly puzzled by insider notations such as "[A] prototype 61 OHV--the first Knucklehead" and "Everyone knows that William G. Davidson--better known as Willie G.--is H-D's vice-president of styling," this book will be readily enjoyed by anyone who admires the lines of a well-made machine. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews:
disappointing and too pretentious.......2001-01-09
Was very disappointed with this book. Before writing this review I read a review of the other book in this series titled "Harley-Davidson Lore: 1966 to Present". That review is completely applicable to this book also. So instead of writing the same message in my own words I took the liberty of taking a little cut and paste action.
"I looked forward to reading this book to learn about H-D tradition, company exploits, and product development. My reason for writing this review is to let others with similar interests know that this book offers very little on those subjects.
What Herbert Wagner has done is to merely compile a set of photographs of such things as H-D advertisements, products, and events, and annotate them in as spartan a manner as you could possibly imagine. This book borders on being completely uninformative!
Just as dissapointing is the format that was chosen by the author and his publisher. The beginning of the book, comprising the vast majority of the pages, contains photos without text. The end of the book is a series of pages that duplicate, in thumbnail sized images, all of the photos found in the beginning of the book. Next to each of these miniature images you will find a few words of descriptive text. Interestingly, the text is so small that it challenges people (even those with eagle-like vision) to read without squinting or without reaching for reading glasses."
Couldn't agree more. Adding that also the pictures in the body of the book are way too small. Maybe 25% of the page is used for a picture, the rest is blank. Either they should have selected a larger page size (if the 25% is important) or they should have used a larger portion for the picture.
The book looks & feels great inside & out........1999-12-17
That Hog lover in your life will be delighted by this classy collection of American Iron photographs. & these are beautiful, historic photos from as far back as 1903. Because the bikes speak for their own beauty, the viewer is pulled back just enough to allow for appreciation of the photographs, too, presented as in a gallery with lots of space around them. Wagner respects them & the tales they tell enough to save his commentary for the final pages of the book. Harley Davidson Lore looks & feels great inside & out. Wash your hands before you pick it up.

Harley Collectible Book.......1999-12-17
I feel this book portrays through the use of historical postcard type pictures an era of days gone by just like the title of the book says from Harley Davidson's birth in 1903-1965. Makes an excellent collectible for future generations to enjoy.

Refreshing view of the Harley.......2004-03-07
A wonderful book from a refreshing standpoint, giving the reader the feeling of the 'brotherhood' of the love of the Harley -Davidson (and motorcycles in general) which spands the ocean. This book not only gives you the 'present' it goes through the history of the Harley in such a way that anyone who reads it can enjoy and understand it, as well as translating the emotions of the rider on his roadtrips. FABULOUS .
This book is only one of the many fine works of this author. . .
Been there done that.......2003-02-01
Five Stars and cheers to one of the best.
This was one of the best reads I have had in a long time. I found my self laughing out loud and annoying my wife several times. I have recently seen the fever in full blossom in two of my friends that resently joined me and my riding friends. The funniest part of all this is that as the fever hit each one I had them read this book and they both reported back on how funny it was to read what they felt was happening to them.
Must read for Harley Lovers.......2003-01-23
I devoured this book over a couple of days. It was a great read about another man's love for riding Harley's. It was easy to see myself in some of LaPlante's expressions of "Hog Fever". If you live where it is too cold to ride, this is a great temporary substitute. If you lay awake at night planning your next chrome purchase, you will "get" this book.
There is no cure, thank the Lord.......2002-10-25
As a recent convert to the world of Harley Davidson I could really relate to Richards experience. I'm a life long biker but new to Harleys. His book captures the Harley "bug" so well and makes for a terrific read for fellow addicts and the uninitiated alike. I was hooked from page one and followed the onset of Hog fever from Richard's first exposure to the legendary Fred Warr right through to his nirvana, the ultimate HOG. The book had even more "feel" for me as I know many of the characters mentioned. Real people in a real HD world all with various degrees of Hog Fever watching bemused as a newcomer starts to show the first systoms.
If you have ever turned your head as a Harley Davidson motorcycle cruised by on the street then you need to read this book. But beware you too could catch Hog Fever, I hope you do, it could be one of the best things ever to happen to you. Remember though, there is no cure, thank the Lord

"Hog jones" is more like it........2002-07-14
A disease either goes away or kills the subject. An addiction is limitless, like La Plante's interest in Harleys.
This is not a book about motorcyles, or even about Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It's about an image, one created by magazines like Easy Riders and In the Wind. La Plante carefully studied that image for years before actually getting a motorcycle. He measures the riders and mechanics he meets by how well they match that image.
By chance, La Plante got his first Harley just before they became popular in the UK, so he looked like a pioneer instead of a follower. He bought it on his wife's credit without her knowledge and rode without a license for years.
Despite spending hours polishing his machine, La Plante nevers bothers to learn how to fix it. Given the number of time it breaks down, this might have been a good idea.
I read this book after Melissa Holbrook Pierson's "The Perfect Vehicle," and this book suffers by comparison. Pierson's book is about discovery, about learning new things about herself and the world, through motorcycling. La Plante's book is about stepping into a pre-existing role, and acquiring all of the accessories to go with it.
I freely admit that Harleys are magnificent-looking machines. I'm also probably one of those people who just don't get it.
La Plante's prose is a smooth, quick read. However, the book never goes very deep into motorcycling or La Plante's own mind.

Backed by a decade of research, At the Creation documents for the first time the early and critical years of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle in its birthplace of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Herbert Wagner brings to life the human side of Harley-Davidson’s quest to motorize the bicycle and then promote it as a powerful, fast, reliable, and thrilling means of personal transportation. This book examines the origins of two-wheeled transportation at a time when combining the gasoline engine with the bicycle was the province of dreamers and con men. This is the definitive account of the beginnings of the only American motorcycle brand to ultimately succeed and survive.

From the Antique Motorcycle Club Forum.......2004-01-14
Koanes wrote:
Mr. Wagner obviously spent a great deal of time searching libraries for newspaper and magazine accounts of the period, as well as interviews with a few surviving old timers, to sort through the B.S and get to the facts about what was really going on in Milwaukee in 1903-1909. I can only imagine what it was like to see a motorcycle flying down the street with no brakes, dodging pedestrians, horses, carts, and wagons.
An excellent and fascinating survey for motorcycle buffs.......2003-10-07
Knowledgeably written by Herbert Wagner (a recognized authority on Harley-Davidson motorcycles), At The Creation: Myth, Reality, And The Origin Of The Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, 1901-1909 is the meticulously researched history of this popular favorite two-wheeled motorized vehicle and the Milwaukee, Wisconsin company that made them. Black-and-white photographs (some of them vintage) wonderfully embellish the straightforward, factual recounting of the history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, including its first race, first dealer, the first customer, as well as the many myths concerning its creation that would later go on to become full fledged urban legends. At The Creation is an excellent and fascinating survey for motorcycle buffs in general, and Harley-Davidson fans in particular!
The real Story.......2003-09-07
Herb Wagner has written a book that will become a classic. What
a good story. And his conclusions will amaze you. The pioneer days of motorcycling in America are brought to life with exquisite detail. Never seen before photgraphs. A must read for
any motorcycle enthusiast.

Book Description
The name Harley-Davidson is synonymous with the US motorcycle industry. It is now, after more than a century of operation, one of only two US-based manufacturers to survive. Although the company's origins are older, 1903 is generally regarded as the year when the company's first motorcycle was produced. Three years later, the company's first factory was opened. By 1917, and the US entry into World War 1, Harley-Davidson had been making motorcycles for more than a decade and, during the USA's relatively brief involvement in that conflict, no fewer than 20,000 motorcycles were supplied to the military helping the company to become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world by 1920. Surviving the Great Depression, Harley-Davidson was to become one of the prime suppliers of equipment again when hostilities resumed, producing no fewer than 90,000 motorcycles for US and Canadian forces during World War 2 with a further 30,000 going to the Soviet Union as part of the Lend-Lease program. In Military Harley-Davidson, Pat Ware explores the Harley-Davidson motorcycle in military service from the earliest days onwards. Providing initially an overview of the company and its history from 1903, the bulk of the book concentrates on the range of models produced by the company and how they were exploited for military use. Whilst the book concentrates primarily on those motorcycles produced for use by the Allies in World War 2, the continuing military role of the Harley-Davidson in other theaters postwar is also covered. Alongside the narrative and a fascinating selection of images, the book also includes a full technical specification for each of the models discussed. The Harley-Davidson is one of the great names in the history of motorcycles with a fan-base that extends worldwide. The role of the company in the provision of military hardware is a less well known but fascinating part of the history of the company and its products. This book will be of interest to Harley-Davidson fans and owners and all motor cycle enthusiasts, military historians, wargamers and preservationists.
