This book turned out to be the perfect gift. The receipient is very satisfied with it and has added it to his collection.

3 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2002-05-15

If you liked this author's book on funny cars, you'll like this one. On the other hand, if you didn't enjoy the funny car book, pass this one by because it's very similar conceptually. It is a fine overview with superlative photography. My only criticism is that Genat should've spent more of the book on the classic front-engined dragsters of the 1960's. What's there is great....just not enough of it for me. But for a neophyte, it's a great book.

Book Description

The early '70s were a pivotal time for rear engine dragsters. "Slingshots" were front engine fire-breathing diggers where the driver sat just three feet behind the motor. This set-up proved to be very dangerous, so in 1970 at Lions Drag Strip "Big Daddy" Don Garlits vowed, after a horrific transmission explosion in his slingshot Wynns Charger, that he would formulate a design that would put the fuel motor behind him. The emergence of the rear-engine dragster rekindled the interest in Top Fuel Eliminator class. Legendary championship drivers like TV Tommy Ivo, Tony Nancy, Gary Beck, Don Prudhomme, Jerry Ruth, Carl Olson, Tom McEwen, Shirley Muldowney, James Warren, Jeb Allen, Herm Peterson, Steve Carbone and many more, are all portrayed in sensational fire-and-smoke belching action at the race track.

A fantastic look back into the 70s at some of the best tracks in the nation like OCIR, Pomona, Iwindale and Ontario Motor Speedway. Full of brief captions with interesting content and tid-bits. A nostalgic feast of the good ol' days!

5 out of 5 stars Good book to read for "Nitro Heads"........1999-02-07

I enjoyed reading this book as it goes into quite a lot of depth. I was a little disappointed in the technical accuracy; I found some of the information on camshafts and transmission gearing to be a little inaccurate. Although, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the sport of Top Fuel drag racing, or anyone interested in reading about the most awesome display of power and torque in the world.
