5 out of 5 stars Great collection of songs you'll recognize .......2007-07-13

This collection is a great mixture of the songs I was listening to on the radio in my pre-teen years. But they are 1000 times clearer now, the talent of the singers is more evident and the melodies are much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Song's of the great 50's.......2000-06-11

I've heard and played all of these song's from back in the 50's on this CD. Some of the greatest music of all time's came from that era. I am looking for the song's "Love Walked Right In" & "Hernandoes Hideaway" from that era. The Singer's I can't remember. If you can be of help, I am Larry F. Rees "E" mail - lfr@ee.net Thank You

5 out of 5 stars Cole's best years were with the trio..........2001-09-19

This 2nd volume of vocal numbers with the Trio covers the years of 1947 - 1950. Recorded before Nat was to become more of a "pop" vocalist and receive backing from arrangers like Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle, the work done with the trio reveals a jazzier side of this great vocalist - not only can he sing but he was incredible jazz pianist with a style that was light and fun. The arrangements for piano, guitar, and bass are always tight and pulled off with perfection. Add to these numbers Nat's "smooth as silk" delivery and you've got a winning collection of standards including "What'll I Do", "Makin' Whoopee", "Too Marvelous for Words", and "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

The sound is slightly better than volume 1. There is a little hiss throughout BUT when you consider the age of these recordings and the generally quiet and open nature of a small jazz combo (i.e. nothing loud to cover up the hiss) it's perfectly understandable and it in no should detract from the enjoyment of the these performances.

Also pick up the 1942 - 1946 collection to round out the collection. There's a third volume which contains only istrumental numbers but part of the magic of these recordings is Nat's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of High School and College.......2007-03-22

I already owned this one, and bought it for a high school and college classmate who had fond memories of the songs on this recording. As one can imagine, it was "a hit". Delivered on time, as usual.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, but short.......2005-11-16

Whenever you think of 50's music, you usually think of rock & roll, yet that never grew until 1955. So, what was around in the 50's til then? That's why I bought this CD.

Surprisingly, some of the songs on here wouldn't be too out of place on a 50's RnR album, most notably, "How High the Moon", "Cry" and "Come On-a My House", all from 1951. The rest is post-war pop.

The least interesting thing about this album is that the 10 songs here are so short that the album doesn't even last half an hour. Like others have said about the series, they should've included more than 10 songs. Still, it's a worthwhile album if you're into vintage pop.

For years, the audio quality of many of the performances gathered on these four CDs prevented a full-on embrace, what with all the other available Charlie Parker out there. But this collection restores these sessions to notoriety. They're mostly from New York's Royal Roost, 1948 to 1950, but with a 1947 Carnegie Hall supergroup concert and a 1950 Chicago pickup date that boasts some unknowns--and undersung guitarist George Freeman--with Parker. First, the single drawback: emcee and radio host "Symphony Sid" Torin's sometimes obsequious, faux-hipster shtick that bookends several of the tunes. Rest assured, though, Torin makes only brief intros and outros. Beyond that, these are all stellar works. The quintet on three of the CDs (the Royal Roost sessions) features Parker with Miles Davis on much of CD 1, highlighting the clipped fire of bebop's architecture being tunneled under by Davis's mellow-tone brass. Even when Kenny Dorham takes over on trumpet, the alchemy is built on contrast, Parker's raspy, fast wit and Dorham's wry (but often likemindedly fast) ripostes. Pianists Tadd Dameron and Al Haig make great showings, as does Max Roach, pushing the energy with a loose attack that defies the fact that the majority of these performances were for radio. The more-famed quintet fronted by Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and pianist John Lewis (famed cofounder of the Modern Jazz Quartet) closes the collection with five tunes from a 1947 Carnegie Hall concert. Parker seems more restrained, Gillespie gleeful, and Lewis characteristically spare. But the playing is first-rate, whether at light-speed (as on "Dizzy Atmosphere") or at the loping clip of "Groovin' High." --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Bird in his Natural Habitat: Live at the Royal Roost.......2007-01-09

Hearing Charlie Parker rip searing riffs on this Savoy set, while I imagine being among those lucky few who witnessed Bee Bop's prophet push the envelope at the Royal Roost, has taken me to whole new level of appreciation for the greatest jazz musician of our time. Live Parker recordings far surpass the studio ones because they allow the listener to hear the saxaphonist's pure power and genius. No editing, no muting, no time limit. Just pure, raw, genius. And this is the best live collection I've found of Parker's work. Some may argue that this collection is too raw in terms of sound quality, but I think that merely enhances the mystique and grit and authenticity of this incredible collection. This is a must-have for Ornithologists!

3 out of 5 stars The worst production by Orrin Keepnews........2006-08-31

This is the worst production by great producer Orrin Keepnews. Music on this 4-cd is great(5 stars). Parker in his peak period and many great musicians (Davis, Dorham, Roach, Milt Jackson) play great too. There are great performances like Ornithology, Confirmation, Salt penauts (with Parker's vocal), Chasin' the bird and many others.
But: Title of this box names COMPLETE live performances on Savoy and this is problem. Royal Roost performances on this box are everything but no complete. There are missing most announcement by Symphony Sid Torin, his talking with Parker, and mainly Parker and his band playing with Symphony Sid voiceover on many stuffs.
There are missing: 52nd street theme, Jumping with Symphony Sid, Jingle bells in many versions. This titles draw club's atmosphere in this era and performances are incomplete without them.
I get off this fake and will buy true Columbia/Nippon Royal Roost complet with similar sound quality I guess.
4th disc contains Carnegie Hall concert but better way is to buy Diz'n Bird at Carnegie Hall. It includes Gillespie with his orchestra performances also.
If you are true fan of Parker dont' buy this 4cd box. It's patch-work.

5 out of 5 stars The Parker Holy Bebop Jazz Trinity.......2004-08-04

Next to the studio Dial and Savoy, this set completes the Parker Holy Bebop Jazz Trinity. These live sessions, are pristine in compare with the Mosaic live set (that is important but only for those who have it all). If you play some instrument, you could learn from these live recordings and even develop your own individual style. I have been there. First, I just listened. Than, I started playing some of his tunes-compositions. I am still in the process of learning. You probably need a lifetime to study Parker's music in depth. On the other hand, you could just sit back and enjoy some fast, bluesy, sophisticated but lively and human playing: The watermark of a real musical genius.

    5 out of 5 stars Supremely recommended.......2003-03-24

Anyone who wants to hear Charlie Parker, please start here, with these Savoy recordings. There is a unique coherence and consistency of place and time - bringing the performer-audience electricity of 50 years ago straight into your living room. You experience CP's invention of that music all over again. This is Bird, pure, straight, no chaser, not shaken, not stirred.
Over the last 30 years I have spent many hours listening to Charlie Parker, and his tunes are etched in my mind like musical sculptures, but these recordings have a lot to add to what I had already learnt. This is the best Bird I have heard.
I also have the highest regard for the beautifully informative and intelligent comments by Orrin Keepnews, Paul Bacon, and Loren Schoenberg.

5 out of 5 stars A broad interpretation of the word "complete.".......1999-06-15

Looks good, doesn't it? All the Roosts on four CDs. Looks mighty good. Then there's even more - recordings from Carnegie Hall in 1947 and Chicago in 1950. Still on four CDs. And you know the Roosts alone came out on four a few years back. Anyway...it looks good. And Orrin Keepnews, that dear leech, says "less is more," congratulating himself (again) on giving Symphony Sid the axe. What he doesn't mention, of course, is that an entire date from 1950 with Fats Navarro and Bud Powell has been similarly excised (vol. 3 of the old set, according to the Penguin guide). It should not even surprise, after all these years of being shafted by record companies, much less shock, and no-one will bat an eyelid when this stuff comes out again, even more complete(!), in a couple of years. But it's dishonest, it's self-serving, and particularly when Keepnews so tenaciously holds to painting himself into the picture of those who cared about jazz, it's disgraceful. Bird can have all the stars in the sky. Orrin gets none.

    5 out of 5 stars Surprising quality.......2006-07-01

Listening to this CD, it's hard to believe the songs are about 56 years old. With the mixed quality of budget import CD's, especially for pre-R&R music, we often order expecting the worst. For a budget CD, this one is a surprise with great fidelity, again considering these songs were recorded long before hi-fi, much less stereo. A great bargain!

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb material w/ ample sound.......2007-02-19

Proper Records is doing a wonderful job at offering affordable box sets of the early legends of jazz music, and "The Dizzy Gillespie Story 1939-1950" is certainly no exception. While I understand how a previous reviewer came to surmise the sound quality is not what it could be, I have to say personally I find the sound ample and likewise rewarding. You'll spend oodles more in cash trying to obtain what you can get on this one set, only to find you wasted precious time and money in doing so.

For casual fans of Gillespie, the most influential of early bebop trumpeters, this collection might be all you ever buy. The insert provides listeners with a wealth of material both on the specific recordings present as well as critical artist biographical info. Unless you really know what you are doing, remastering work like this can often ruin and not enhance the material in question. I am completely satisfied with the quality and am thankful they did not harm the integrity of recordings, while admittedly they appear to have done little if anything to enhance it.

Five stars for showcasing a great musician with wonderful packaging and sufficient sound, this box set is an absolute treat. Bravo to Proper Records, for knowing what fans want and delivering. So toss this one in your cart or place it on your to-buy list and prepare to be delighted!

      5 out of 5 stars Bebop Brilliance.......2006-08-22

The breadth of Dizzy's work covered in this box set is staggering. You could easily spend 4 times the amount of money gathering these sessions together. I am a big fan of Charlie Parker, and I especially love the music in which Bird and Diz played together. I have to admit though, that while Charlier Parker contributed the phrasing and the genius that launched bebop, it was Dizzy that provided the leadership and the mentoring that kept it moving forward. The recognition of Dizzy's contributions seems to be sorely lacking, then and even now.

This box set captures Dizzy's efforts during this most crucial period that shaped what modern jazz sounds like today. It covers his early work with Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, and Coleman Hawkins, and the early small group work with Bird leading up to their trip to California. It includes Dizzy's bebop big band after returning to New York, as well as his earliest Afro-Cuban recordings with Chano Pozo.

If this wasn't enough, the box set includes Bird and Diz's 1947 Carnegie Hall concert, and the famous Bird/Diz/Monk recordings from 1950, when Norman Granz got exactly what he didn't want, and we bebop fans got exactly what we did want (thank you Mr. Granz).

Dizzy's energy, power, and enthusiasm never diminish throughout these selections, and the bands, small and large, swing with incredible precision. It is so good to hear his fluttering trumpet lines soaring over the lush big band background and settling back to earth.

Finally a word about the sound quality- An early review of this box set decried the sound quality, and frankly that is what kept me from purchasing it for a long time. Having nearly worn out the CDs now, I think the sound quality is just fine. I have duplicates of many of the songs in this set, including the early small group bebop sessions and the master takes of the Bird/Diz/Monk set, and I can tell you that the sound quality is as good or better in this set than in the duplicates.

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, detailed treatment of early Dizzy.......2005-10-02

Most of us that love and follow the origins of modern jazz seem to know all about the early recordings of Charlie Parker, for instance, the Jay McShann recordings, the Redcross acetates, the Tiny Grimes session, and finally the Bird/Diz output of 1945 for Guild and the Comet session with Red Norvo.

This CD box covers the early years of bebop via the recordings of Dizzy Gillespie. It includes all important sessions leading up to the Bird/Diz recordings (Teddy Hill, Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins), and after the split with Bird, covers his output with his big band and small groups up to 1950.

Some very rare recordings are included, such as his 1st recording of Groovin' High, with Dexter Gordon, and a session with strings of Jerome Kern's compositions, that was pulled because the estate of Kern objected to Dizzy's liberties.

I have never seen so complete a box set dealing with Dizzy Gillespie's early work. The liner notes are quite complete as well.

      Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Not Bad For The Price & Period Considering Dizzy's Total Output........2005-06-05

Complete with an an informative booklet, colorfuly packaged,a lot of early band sides and "hits" a la Ken Burns style, much Savoy Groovin High period as well as some Bird and the RCA period nicely covered.
No one can say after you get this box set you were robbed..OK, they are not the Original Masters but are pretty good to my ears. The sound is pretty clean and this box remains a great overview even Penguin's Guide To Jazz says so. It is a great sampler not a composite whole in listening to the man.

4 out of 5 stars perfect selection, sound quality just fine.......2005-04-27

This is a very inexpensive way to get all the key early Bebop sides in one place, plus a bunch of stuff you don't need as well. Some of these recordings are among the most important ever made. An earlier reviewer complained about the sound quality. I found nothing wrong; maybe he didn't know what to expect from magnetic recordings that have been transferred onto CD from 60-year-old 78 RPMs.

I would totally buy this box set if I were you. I compared the sound quality to the "complete RCA/victor recordings" and there was virtually no difference. It's maybe not top of the line quality, but its totally worth it, because the music is completely enjoyable still and the fuzz isn't bad at all... it's like you're actually listening to the record, instead of a small piece of plastic onto which data is written and read.

Also, Charlie Parker, my fave, appears on MANY of these tracks, including some FANTASTIC live ones that I haven't seen anywhere else. When they get together they really soar!

If you want to get into Dizzy and his pals in their prime development, ca. 1945-50, and catch a glimpse at his vitruoso playing before that, this is the set to go with. Don't worry about the sound quality.

Finally, if you like this I must recommend the inexpensive CD box-set "Bebop Spoken Here" on the same label. It contains many of the songs here but it is a selection of various artists from 1944-50, tracing the birth and development of BOP! Maybe you should start there, as it highlights this set as well as others.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to JSP's first two Django box sets.......2006-02-08

This is JSP's third great box set of Django Reinhardt recordings, and anyone who likes jazz guitar or just great music in general has to really appreciate their contribution. Taken together, these three sets provide a fairly complete (and very skillfully remastered) compilation of most of Django's known recordings.

I first hesitated to get this third set (Django in Rome 1949-1950) because many of the songs were included in "The Indispensable Django Reinhardt" which I already owned. Having listened to it now, though, I have no regrets about the purchase. Not only is the sound quality much better than "The Indispensible Django Reinhardt," but the additional songs included turn out to be many of Django's best recordings.

Of the four disks, the first three consist mainly of Django playing in 1949 in Rome with his old partner on violin, Stephane Grappelli, and the last disk contains recordings in 1950 with another old friend, Andre Ekyan, on alto sax and clarinet. In both cases the soloists are backed by competent Italian backup bands consisting of piano, bass and drums. Many of the recordings with Grappelli, in particular, rank with the very best of the original Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and it's quite interesting to see how they rework some of the same songs that they'd first recorded together a decade earlier.

One thing that should be mentioned is that, contrary to the title shown on the Amazon page, these are not live recordings and the name on the box set itself doesn't say "live." It would be great to have a box set like this of live recordings of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but as far as I know nothing like that exists. In any case, it's at least fortunate that so many remarkable studio recordings have been preserved and now remastered.

5 out of 5 stars Vive le Django, Vive le JSP.......2005-01-02

      Pros:
      * 90 sides for less than $30
      * Beautiful remastering by Ted Kendall with minimal noise make these old recordings sound modern
      * Django playing brilliantly as always on the electric and acoustic guitar in a variety of settings including solo, reunions with Stephane Grappelli, and a reconfigured Quintette du Hot Club du France featuring clarinet, sax, piano, and drums
      * As opposed to the second JSP box where Django plays with huge ensembles and is featured less prominently, this box has Django performing with 4 musicians or less
      * Mr. Kendall includes a slow and sublime version of Nuages with an electric guitar solo by Django including one of the more ridiculous runs up the fretboard ever recorded

      Cons:
      * A question of taste: Swing enthusiasts infatuated with the 3 guitar, bass, and violin sound of the early QHCF may prefer the first JSP box, but any fan of Le Django will be quite satisfied with these exquisite late masters
      * Minimal packing and notes

      Bottom line: Staggering value
