Otis Redding's studio recordings remain some of soul's greatest moments, yet it was primarily his live performances that made Redding's reputation so stunning in the years prior to his death. In fact, at the time of his death, Redding had recently stolen the show at 1967's legendary Monterey Pop Festival. This live document was released only a month after that California performance in July of '67--and it's an even better set than the one that made him famous here in the States. In fact, it's a tossup between this and In Person at the Whisky a Go Go (released posthumously), in regards to capturing the soul great onstage in all his glory. But as much as the California hippies seemed to love Redding at the Whisky and at Monterey Pop, the Europeans simply adored him. That may be what gives this performance the slight edge as Redding runs through a standard set, spotlighting both some of his biggest hits as well as covers of tunes made famous by the Beatles, the Stones, the Temptations, the Isley Brothers, and Sam Cooke. Critic Sid Griffin suggested that this "is simply one of the few albums to give James Brown's breathtaking Live at the Apollo a run for its money"--and, really, you can't do any better than that. --Bill Holdship

You can actually feel his soul listening to this CD.
Much better than the Whisky a Go Go recordings that I also bought , and they are good too .

Great performance, lousy mix.......2006-02-07

This is a good album. Otis gives a fine performance, and the crowd is way into it. Personally though, I feel the mixing of this recording borders on terrible. Otis' vocals take a back seat to the horn section, which is up far too loud. The drums are also a bummer, as they are practically inaudible. This is an album worth having, but not one worthy of being in the top 25 albums of all-time as Rolling Stone billed it.

Another Grreat Live Performance by Otis Redding.......2001-03-16

I would actually give this four and a half stars. One reason is the sound quality. There is alot of audience noise and sometimes the vocals seem distant. Other then that, Otis Redding Live in Europe is a great album. It is not quite as good as In Person At The Whisky A Go Go, but it is still really good. The setlist is great. Respect kicks the album off great with one of the best versions of the song ever. This recording of Can't Turn You Loose is not as good as the one on Whisky, but it is good. This is followed by a very inspired version of I've been Loving You Too Long. The cover here of My Girl is probably even better then the version on Otis Blue, which is saying alot. Shake is done great and a very good version of satisfaction, but nowhere near as good as the one on Whisky. Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa is one of the highlights of the album, with alot of audience participation, which could be considered good or bad. I think that it still sounds really good. These Arms of Mine is another highlight. It's followed by a good version of Day Tripper that is drastically different then the Beatles version. The album closes with Try A Little Tenderness, which is the best song on the album. Overall this is a great album, but I would reccomend buying In Person At The Whisky A Go Go over this album.

Not the best live Otis, but still wicked good.......2001-01-19

Otis is the man. His voice is powerful, his melodies stirring, and his energy onstage is unmatched. Unfortunately, it doesn't show as well on this album as on some of the others. On this cd, recorded (I think) in '67 in Europe, his backup band includes writing partner Steve Cropper as well as the rest of the members of Booker T & The MGs. Unfortunately, while the production and sound may be better on this album than on the other live Otis album, the songs come off somewhat sissified, less powerful, missing the vibrant energy heard (or felt!) on the other release, Otis Redding In Person at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go (released after his death). If you're looking for a reasonable introduction to Otis Redding, this is a good start - the songs are recognizable, the production is fairly clean, and it is enjoyable. Stand out tracks on this album include Daytripper (Beatles cover), Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa, Try a Little Tenderness, and Shake. Satisfaction is okay, but Respect and I Can't Turn You Loose sound tired and old. A good beginner record. If you're a hard-core R&B fan looking to groove, though, check out the Whiskey-A-Go-Go record. That will blow your socks off...

You gotta hear it to believe it!.......2000-07-15

"Live in Europe" by Otis Redding is one of the 4 or 5 greatest live albums that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I bought the CD last year, and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. Interesting that Redding covers both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. All of the songs here are superb. The audience participation here contributes greatly to the mood and atmosphere, and Redding knows exactly how to interact with the audience. This is exactly what a live album should be. This disc comes highly recommended.

Nice, Elegant Restatement of their repertoire..........2007-05-02

This is a very nice recording with one really impressive piect that finally has been recorded after hearing it performed in concert for quite a few years, that being "The Half Life of Absolution". That piece alone, for me, is worth the price of the CD. Expansive, edgy, ambient and improvisational. It features the group in a different mode considering that the recordings that immediately preceded it ("Letter From Home", "Still Life (Talking)" and "First Circle") Those recording were more based in world-beat music forms that were mostly latin-based while this, this was something spacey, ambient, edgy, plaintive, improvisational and vital.

The recording starts out with one of the essential Metheny/Mays pieces, "Have You Heard?". The solos and passages are faithful to the original but really no real surprises except for a slightly different feel due to the live environ.

"First Circle" is one of their masterpieces and an album highlight. Again done very true to form. Just beautiful and this one should be left alone because this piece is unique in it's scope, vision and beauty. Lyle takes his solo in excellent form.

"Last Train Home" was actually better than the studio version that was done in "Still Life (Talking)". That feel, that attracted you to this piece in the first place is much more urgent here. Aznar provides a subtle vocal embellishment and you feel the plaintive, wistfulness of the piece. Steve Rodby's bass is essential to this.

"Better Days Ahead" - This version is much better than in "Letter From Home". Paul Wertico's backbeat, Lyle's piano solo and Pat's guitar solos are more expressive and frankly better than in the original. I find myself skipping the original version in "Letter From Home" but listing to this one with much more interest

"Third Wind" - done very nicely with a bit of a different feel since Pedro is a different kind of vocalist than Ledford and Blamires. His tones rounder and so the vocal sections not quite with that edge when he hits that loooonnnnnggggggg note. The group interplay is excellent coming off the break. They really cook.

EUROPIAN VACATION.......2006-11-08

Some years ago, I was working at my job in surgery when a friendly female nurse asked what that great jazz I was listening to. I told her it was Pat Metheny. She asked was there more like that. I replied--not thinking as I was busy--"Yeah, I think you would like about anything he does. Just give it a try." What I didn't remember was Pat had just put out the SONGS X album with Ornette Coleman and (wouldn't you know it) that was the album she bought. The two days later she threw the tape in my face and yelled "you can just have this c**p!". She never spoke to me again. It kinda upset me because she was every bit of alright.

Since that time, one has to pick Metheny's albums carefully. There seems to be drive, which one guesses is an occupational hazard among popular jazz musicians, to prove to your contemporaries that you indeed are "artistic" and a deadly serious creative type. After all, no one wants to be regarded as another Kenny G. What comes out is this earnest, edgy stuff appreciated by aficionados of "deep jazz"--otherwise known as "pure music". Whatever the effect these immersions have on peer respectability, they sell very few records. They also have the lethal effect of persuading the general public that jazz is not for them.

Fortunately, THE ROAD TO YOU has none of impulses to bow to the jazz elite. This is an excellent record full of the most loved pieces in the Metheny catalogue. The live performances and the mixing are about all you could ask for given the recording art of the time. THE ROAD TO YOU is also absent any traces of one of Metheny's favorite guitar-synth sounds I lovingly call "the raging elephant". There have been several great Metheny albums since this recording and he continues to draw an ever larger fan base. But you could do much worse than starting here. It any so bad for us long time fans either.

I agree with David........ BUY IT FOR THIRD-WIND. I've heard a couple of versions of that track but the one on this CD is AWESOME!

I've been listening to Pat for about 20 years now.....I'm 40 so thats half of my life....... I've seen him in several concerts and also had the pleasure of meeting him in NY at J&R Music World where I got his Autograph! I wish that I weren't nervous because I would have hugged him..... I did shake his though.

He's the only musician the I can say I LOVE. His music reaches my soul like no other.....period.

(of a common soul, I'd almost swear,
playing different tools from the same heart
with different fingers) take me and took
European audiences on this album,
I would have titled it "Levitation."

Music, well composed and performed, built
and played with care, love, creativity
and talent, takes me places that approach
ecstatic.

With this work on the audiograph I am
transported places VERY few other musicians
have ever taken me close to, in any genre.

I can only compare it to feeling lifted up
and floating, being held aloft--levitated--
by Pat's group, working together so tightly
while flowing, like liquid, over and through
the songs' melodies, arrangements, rhythms.

Listening, right now, to this CD's version of
the Metheny-Mays standard "First Circle."
Am in the clouds! Think it's just my opinion?

Exhilarating!!!.......2006-05-09

I have little time or I could go on and on about this recording, but - "Third Wind" on this album is the best version of that tremendous, wild, track; "Letter from Home" is poignant, to the point that I've seen it bring people to tears; Fabulous version of "Last Train Home"; "Half Life of Absolution" may take some time to get into, but once there, one can feel the urgency of the track - tremendous. All in all, a terrific album and if you're on the fence about buying it, take the plunge for "Third Wind" alone. Note that the excerpt of this song from Amazon is at one of the weakest parts of the track (still a good part but not as strong as other parts) - they should add something from Metheny's rip-roaring guitar-synth solo towards the end of the track.

Does Get Much Better.......2006-02-26

I recently bought this for $5.00 used. I am afraid I feel like I stole something from the shop steward. This disc is amazing from start to finish. A mix of blues, stunning solos, jazzy tunes. It's crisp, clean and Ronnie Earl at his very best. No one who has reviewed this has come away with anything but glowing kudos; 12 sensational offerings, one better than the next. How could this end up for $5.00? It's worth four times that much.

Jaw dropping.......2006-02-22

This record is stunning. Inspired and inspiring. Among my all time favorite modern blues recordings. Just awesome.

Guitar Superstar!.......2005-05-16

Ronnie Earl really sizzles on this album, and if you didn't know who was playing when you first heard this (as I did not) you would think he's about the best axeman since guys like T-Bone, Buddy or Magic Sam came along as I do). It is actually more fun to just kick back and listen to his acrobatic playing than it is to even hear somebody try to sing and play the blues at the same time. Derek Trucks is my man, and definitely an emerging force in modern blues but I don't think he or even Buddy let alone anyone else can play guitar like what you're getting here.

Blues Guitar for Blues Guitarists (and you too!).......2005-01-20

This cat just burns. His solos are not just copies of someone he heard back in the day, but real, feeling-laden creations that make you sweat. On "Thank you Mr. T-Bone", he emulates the single-string runs and pumping chords of The Man Himself, T-Bone Walker. No one has ever come close to this kind of mastery, not even Eric, Stevie Ray or Jimi.

Buy this CD. Buy it again! Buy it still again!!

Live albums don't get much better. If you like Whitesnake, this will be the only one you will want to listen to. Live in the still of the night is just as good, but not as long.

Straight forward rock..........2007-03-26

Anyone's who's a Whitesnake fan or a fan of good, straight forward rock will love this cd...The four new songs are classic Whitesnake...hopefully a new album is in the works.

The rock scene today is in shambles and its nice to hear classic Whitesnake singing these songs along with the four new additions...Coverdale's voice is strong and in fine form.

This cd is better then most of today's rock cd's that's for sure!

A most welcomed come back!.......2007-03-25

If it's great for all the fans of Whitesnake seeing and hearing their latest performance, it's even greater to listen new material.

This is a "must" for everybody who loves Whitesnake regarding the different eras and musicians that join their talent with David Coverdale. If you like the Deep Purple, the Moody/Mardsen or the Sykes/Vandemberg/Vai recordings you'll have plenty of great material in this CD.

There's also the plus of the new material, that mixes the good old voice of Mr Coverdale (including it's famous "ouh ouh ouh" of "Kittens got claws") with great riffs performed by Aldrich and Reb "The lord of the strings" Beach. Although you can't categorize the new songs as "cutting edge" rock (thinking of Dream Theater)you will find power and comitment in each note.

The snake is rockin' hard again: "If you want me" remembers me that we need the good old voices return and redeem its place in the music business. Thank you Mr. Coverdale!

Awesome Cd!.......2007-03-10

I gave this cd 4 stars because the sound quality is not that good. The sound for Live:In The Still Of The Night dvd is better. This cd has lot more songs and are incredible.

Bottom line. This is a great cd which any fan of rock and roll would like.

Like a good wine... .......2007-02-21

Everytime I am buying a new album from a 80's band, an inevitable doubt crosses my mind: Is this worth to buy or just another desperate attempt to get some more money before they dissappear forever?

With Whitesnake is not the case, this is the kind of band that gets stronger with the years, even when they crossed through the 80's hair metal era, David Coverdale has been always a talented musician bringing new and fresh ideas in every Whitesnake record, but at the same time being consistent and clear on the sound he wants.

I felt confident to buy this record because I had the opportunity to see them performing live on this tour as opening act for Judas Priest in Mexico City and loved the show.

This is a good summary of the Whitesnake career, Coverdale keeps his great voice, excellent mix of songs between the old records and the 80's-90's era, great musicians line-up... and the band sounds mature and stronger than ever. Like good old wines, getting better with time.

The unreleased songs at the end sound good and fresh,definitely worth to listen, they sound more like a preview of an upcoming Whitesnake record rather than old cut tunes that didn't make it to previous records.

For metal fans that started in the early 80's like me, this record is an oasis, without tags, without molds, without crossovers, just an uncompromised pure rock album from a band that stills enjoys to play. I have really enjoyed listening this record from beginning to end.

Ironic, but good old bands sound fresh these days....

This album is worth buying for the Rendition of Masters of war & a totally brilliant "Garage" Rock version of Highway 61. Tangled up in blue with new lyrics is cool as well

Very good live Dylan.......2006-03-23

Real Live is an album that seems to get a bad rap, that is, if people even know about it at all. But this reputation (or lack thereof) is unwarranted, as this is an extremely enjoyable album. There are two types of songs here: the acoustic numbers and the loud upbeat rockers.

The acoustic songs (It Ain't Me, Babe, Tangled Up in Blue, and Girl From the North Country) are for the most part very good. It Ain't Me Babe has the crowd singing along heartily, which is nice to hear. And Tangled Up in Blue, with alternate lyrics, is just amazing. I loved this tune when I heard the original but I just can't get enough of this one. Great. Girl From the North Country isn't quite as good, as Dylan's voice seems more strained.

As for the rockin' tunes (the rest of the album), they're almost all at a faster tempo than the album originals, and all feature great guitar work from Mick Taylor (formerly of the Rolling Stones); in fact, the band as a whole is very tight and Dylan is into it.

So while this album is hard to find and may be not as historically significant or (quite) as high quality as the Bootleg Series albums, it is nonetheless a good listen and I would recommend it to any Dylan fan.

Underrated Dylan Live CD.......2006-03-02

Dylan started with "Before the Flood" - an excellent document of his 1974 tour. The he released "Hard Rain" , which was only so-so (get Live 1975 the bootleg series instead). The he released the Budokan set, which was rock- bottom. That set was so bad that expectations were modest for this live set.
Surprise- this is good! He's got a good backing band led by Mick Taylor of Rolling Stones fame and he does a good 10 song set here. Maybe not his best live work but better than much of the other live LPs of the period.

Real Live Rocks.......2003-10-01

My dad says he was blown away when he first heard this record. Mick Taylor had just left the Stones, was now playing with Mr. D, and his smoking guitar work supercharges this record. Sometimes Dad and I disagree, but not about this record. I do wish though, that they would have made it a double CD and released the whole show, cuz this CD just plain rocks. Oh well, maybe if we're lucky, they'll release one of the shows from this tour as a future legal bootleg in the Bootleg Series. Until then we'll have to be satisfied with "Real Live." Five stars for this one.

A fine, underappreciated and very accessible live album.......2003-07-14

"Real Live" may not be as grand as the double album "Live 1975", as groundbreaking as "Live 1966" or as intense as "Hard Rain".
In fact, there aren't too many surprises as far as arrangements go, and the band is a fairly ordinary four-piece combo (plus Dylan himself).
So why even buy this? Most of the songs can be found on other live albums anyway, and the new verses for "Tangled Up In Blue" aren't THAT magnificent.

Well, this may not be Bob Dylan's most interesting live effort, but it is actually a fine album nonetheless, and the band is excellent. Dylan's 1984 touring combo may not have been as wild and idiosyncratic as The Band, but you can't put a finger on their musicianship. Former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor is very prominent troughout the album, and plays some excellent solos, and the production is very good, allowing the listener to hear both Taylor's leads and Dylan's rhythm guitar. And drummer Collin Allen creates a superb groove with bassist Greg Sutton and former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan.

Among the highlights are "Highway 61", a superb piece of garage rock, a swinging, groovy "I And I", the seven-minute rendition of "Tangled Up In Blue" (fine vocal performance by Dylan), and a really rocking "Tombstone Blues". "Maggie's Farm" is great too, it just doesn't match the intensity of the version found on "Hard Rain".

"Real Live" also features an interesting electric version of "Masters Of War", and even though it may seem a bit short at "only" ten songs, it does clock in at 50 minutes, which makes it about as long as you can expect from an LP-era release.

"Real Live" may not be an essential Bob Dylan purchase, but if you are a fan, it provides a nice addition to the Dylan catalogue, sporting lean, muscular versions of some of his best songs.

I prefer the Irish Tour--if you love gallagher, you'll buy both. The trax are mixed differently, where the voice or guitar comes from, but great ol' rock & roll.

Rory's Finest Hour.......2006-07-29

I had never heard of Rory until a bandmate of mine turned me on to this album (thanks Ken Smith). We played it until it wore out and then bought another copy. The band ended up doing 5 songs of this particular LP and we went to see him play at the Colonial Tavern in Toronto, Canada. We went on a Monday night and were so impressed that we went back for the rest of the week. Each night, the buzz got bigger and the audience was at full capacity by Thursday night. He and the band were on fire and we were knocked out. I consider this album to be his best live work and is on par with other "better selling" live works (Humble Pie/Fillmore, Allmans/Fillmore, Muddy Waters/Newport and so on). I've been a fan of Rory's ever since that cold Monday in Toronto back in '75 and on a recent trip to Ireland, I stopped by his gravesite to pay homage and respect to a musician's musician. Live on Rory!

Proof positive of the incredible musical genius of Rory Gallagher.......2006-04-16

Of the many inanities on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 greatest guitarists that came out with great fanfare a few years ago, the most absurd is this: Rory Gallagher did not make the list. One can argue about where various guitarists should have been placed, but around 65 of the guitarists on the list truly belonged there. But 90 or 95 of the ones on the list must cringe with embarrassment that they were ranked above Rory Gallagher. There is simply no way that one can listen at any length to Rory play one scintillating solo after another and place him outside the top ten guitarists in the history of rock. Yeah, he was never terribly popular and even now is not especially well known to the public at large, but the fact is that he had utter mastery over his primary instrument. And unlike most guitarists, Gallagher was a multi instrumentalist. It is widely reported that when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, the first choice to replace him was Gallagher. It is easy to see why. He was even more of a blues purist than any of the remaining Stones, was a better slide player than Keith Richards, Brian Jones, or Mick Taylor, would have provided far better back up vocals than anyone ever has for the band, would have brought some of the same multi-instrumental mastery that Brian Jones contributed in the sixties, and just generally would have forced everyone else in the band to get better just to keep up.

A lot of guitarists fake it in the studio. They get the benefit of multiple takes, double tracking, and various sound effects. Live albums show what you can really do, and luckily we have two great live albums from Gallagher, this one and IRISH TOUR. I actually prefer this one, however, because most of the cuts here did not appear on other albums. For the most part, he sticks with reworkings of classic blues songs. Unlike many bands, his versions never, ever sound like parodies of the originals (for instance, Led Zeppelin on all their blues covers except the truly haunting "When the Levee Breaks"). This album illustrates something that I think shows just how special Gallagher was: how superbly he managed to play while singing. The overwhelming majority of guitarists shift to a sort of back up or rhythm mode when they are singing, moving away from a kind of counterpoint until the singing stops and they can shift to lead guitar mode. Even a guitar god like Richard Thompson does this (though his "back up" mode is far better than most). What is eerie about Gallagher is how is intermixes his singing with lead playing. He often is effectively soloing or playing counterpoint to his singing, as if he able to devote separate parts of his brain to singing and playing. The only other guitarist that I know who does this as well as Gallagher is Jimi Hendrix. Anyone wanting to see what I'm talking about should just listen to this album carefully, noticing not just how he shifts from singing to playing, but how he is playing WHILE he is singing. This also comes across with the way he can play a guitar solo while also playing the harmonica. Whatever else this proves, it demonstrates his almost freakish musical gifts.

Every cut on the album is nothing short of amazing. Later in his career Gallagher would throttle back ever so slightly on his playing, adding more of a lyrical touch when he played. But here he is playing with almost reckless abandon, though never out of control. The only rock guitarist that I think was better on slide was Duane Allmann and on several cuts here Gallagher shines in his slide work. I utterly love, for instance, the way he shifts from regular playing to slide on "I Could Have Had Religion" while also moving from vocals to harmonica. And while he is equally as impressive on cuts like "Messin' with the Kid" and Laundromat" and "Bullfrog Blues," the icing on the cake is what he does with acoustic guitar on "Pistol Slapper Blues" and mandolin on "Going to My Home Town." The most astonishing thing about the number he performs on mandolin is how incredibly exciting it is. One wouldn't normally imagine this to be the case, but the proof is in the listening.

This is without question one of the great live albums ever released and vivid proof of how great Gallagher was. It also stands a rebuke to whatever morons were in charge of that silly Rolling Stone list.

Rory Gallagher: Live In Europe.......2006-01-17

Everyone knows that Live In Europe and Irish Tour '74 are Rory's best CDs, but how do they compare? For my money, this CD (Live In Europe) is a lot better than Irish Tour. Irish Tour is all electric, played fast and loud, which gets monotonous; also, it consists almost entirely of Rory's own songs. Live In Europe varies the tempo much better, and it even includes a lot of old blues standards mixed in with his originals, especially in the bonus tracks. Irish Tour is more AC/DC blues-rock, while Live In Europe is more just electric versions of Delta Blues songs, and in the end I guess it's just a matter of taste. But with all that said, both discs are amazing and you really need to get both!

9 classic tracks rory was always the guy too keep puttin' out new tracks live and so that what he played never got stale i'm not sayin' gallagher's work is stale and borin' i'm just sayin' he wanted too keep his legion of fans happy with the new dimensions he added too his live perfomances whether it's a nice acoustic ditty "pistol slapper blues" or the fast paced rifftastic "laundromat" rory certainly knew how to play them six strings and make the mouths of his fans open with amazement

most lives albums are usually recorded badly but this was recorded perfectly and the remastered sounds crisp and clear to the ear of the listener

Still the greatest diva. Buy it........2006-09-06

'Tina Live' (in Europe)was recorded just a year or two after I saw her perform almost exactly the same material (without the very famous duet partners, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Robert Cray, and Bryon Adams). And even though the performance I saw was at a very ordinary venue (Allentown PA fairgrounds), Miss Tina gave every bit as good a performance as she does on this album recorded in London.

And this should be no big surprise, as Tina Turner has been making a big impression on the stange for decades. I can still remember the reviews of the 1970 Rolling Stones tour where it was said that their leadin act, the Ike and Tina Turner Revue almost stole the show from 'The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World'.

It's even ironic that when we saw Tina at the end of her biopic, 'What's Love Got to Do With It', we thought that this was a rare case where the subject of a film biography literally outshone the actor (Angela Basset) who played the part on the screen.

I also happen to be writing this as I listen to a Barbra Streisand concert album, and in spite of my being a Streisand fan from the release of her very first album, I find that Miss Tina puts on a show which simply blows Babs off the map. To be fair, Streisand puts a whole lot more nuance into her interpretations, but for stage presence, Tina carries the day.

Live & incredible........2003-04-20

I'm a big fan of Tina Turner and besides having her cd's I also have some of her live videos. And if you haven't seen Tina on stage, I have to tell you that you're missing an electrifying experience.

After touring for 4 years with sold out shows. Tina released this production in 1988 after the impact of "Private dancer" and her 1986 hit album "Break every rule".
"Tina live in Europe" cointains her biggest hits live as a solo singer (without Ike) and it also contains duets with: David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams and Robert Gray. There's a section on cd2 where Tina sings old classics such as "A change is gonna come" and "Midnight hour".
Tina delivers her best in songs like: "Help", "Let's stay together", "Two people", "A change is gonna come" and other ballads. But she also rocks with songs like: "Show some respect", "Proud Mary", "Typical male", "Addicted to love" (a classic on Tina's concerts) and "Better be good to me".

Tina's tour was worldwide but besides her incredible success of "Private dancer". In 1986 and 1987 Tina had an amazing hit in Europe with her "Break every rule" album and because of that an her early solo years. Tina felt that Europe was always there for her and this cd was a gift for her European fans.

This album won a Grammy in 1989 and sold millions in Europe and Asia, but in the U.S it only reached #88 in the Hot 200.
Part of this tour was her Guiness Records record of 1988 when she sang in Rio in front of 182,000 people at the Maracana stadium.

Breaks Every Rule!.......2002-04-21

I hate to think what most performers today would sound like on a live album. Ugh! Fortunatley, we have Tina Turner here to show us how a live album should be done. As you listen to this set, you can almost see yourself at the various shows recorded here, with such amazing sound and precision. No matter if some songs are obviously from more than just her Break Every Rule Tour. They all rock. This woman personifies rock-and-roll more than any other female rock singer. The sound is great, obviously much attention was paid to the sound recording of this album, and it certainly paid off! This set stands as tribute to the incredible courage, determination, and pure talent of this unique lady. Just sit back, slip one of the two discs in your CD player, and enjoy!

Tina defines "LIVE"!.......2001-03-26

Tina's 1988 European performance is spectacular, with a 2 CD set. (Though I believe some of the songs were performed a few years earier.) CD 1, approx. 66: 53, is a collection of her hits from the beginning to the present date. Her strong voice sizzles from beginning with "What you get is what you see," and wrapping it up with her rock n' roll anthem "Show some respect." CD 2, approx 60:33, continues with great duets with Robert Cray (In the midnight hour," "634-5789," Guitar solo on "A change is gonna come"), Eric Clapton (Tearing us apart"), David Bowie ("Tonight," "Let's Dance"), and Bryan Adams (It's only love"). Then closing with the destiny sound of "Paridise is here." Inside is a booklet is a letter about the trip and concerts by Tina, as well as beautiful pictures. I know that I've seen some of these performances on her "Break every rule" video-which is great. I guess my Mom was right on 1 thing that's great about Tina, that she don't hold nothing back, she performs, she gives it all she's got. And this collection proves that. Bravo!

"Live" and Loving it.......2001-02-18

I'm not a big fan of "live" albums,but TINA:Live in Europe, is one that changes my opinion. It's a must for any Tina fan.

That's what I thought of this set. The NEC show is definitely not up to standards, mostly because of Ritchie. He sounds uninterested and occasionally just stops playing in parts of songs. Doesn't even start playing until his Highway Star solo. Parts are pretty good, particulary Knocking at Your Back Door and Perfect Strangers, but overall the show suffers from Ritchie's lack of interest.

But then there's the Stuttgart show. Something must have gotten into everybody for this one, because it just rocks. Even Gillan's screaming on Child in Time is pretty decent, considering that this is 1993, not 1973. The soloing is fantastic from everyone, especially Ritchie, and the crowd is more into it for the Stuttgart show. Funny side note: during Speed King, Ritchie starts to fool around with the Burn riff, and he and Jon go into a neat 30 second jam that gets a good reaction from the crowd, but probably not Gillan. Another funny side note: Jon does something really weird and discordant (intentional?) during the second verse of Smoke on the Water that prompts Gillan to sing "...funky Claude was running in an'--that was pretty awful!..." before going back into the rest of the verse.

The NEC show is worth a listen or two, but Stuttgart is what really makes the set worth owning.

Ritchie Phones It In.......2006-08-21

These shows, recorded on the last tour Ritchie Blackmore did before leaving Deep Purple, are a testament to just how uninterested Richie was in participating in the band. As in most shows from this tour, The Man In Black could barely be bothered to play most of "Highway Star." This CD collection is for die-hard Purple fans only. The highlight of the collection is the short preview of "Hall of the Mountain King" Ritchie plays. This song will end up on the Rainbow album, "Stranger In Us All." For all sane Purple fans, "Come Hell or High Water" is the definitive live CD from this tour.

Another objective review for you..........2006-08-19

Two shows with the same setlist: One in England and one in Germany. The Germany one is better because Ritchie was busy throwing water on a camera man at the start of the English concert and doesn't start playing guitar until the solo of "highway star" (no kidding!) But what can you say? The media is like cops, they're never around when you need them and like parasites all around you when you don't. Also, Gillan misses a few of his lines at the England show, like coming out of the rhythm section of "Perfect Strangers". The whole band sounds pretty good and the production levels are pretty top-notch. Ritchie plays above average throughout on the Stuttgart show, but I find he must be using different pickups on his stratacaster now. It sounds close to the old DiMarzzio pickup he used to have but it's more like a Seymour Duncan, which doesn't offer the same "grating", squealing effect that he used to have. It's still Ritchie, but the soloing on "Lazy" and in other songs is missing a bit. Gillan is in his forties on here, so his vocals are not a "ten". More like a 7.5. If you want a good DP show on CD that includes the original line-up and has songs from the "Perfect Strangers" CD, arguably their best work, then this is the one for you.

However there are some sparks in the show like Anya.
They play proffecionally but all the time I have a felling that something is wrong in the band. Blackmore plays great but like only for himself, like he is only on the stage.
GILLAN SOUNDS THE WORST I HAVE EVER HEARD HIM...
Now I understand why Ritchie was so angry!
Lord's organ sounds far back for Ritchie favor...
In 1993 there were much more better show in Scandinavia.

Historic Recording.......2006-08-10

This CD does not show anything different from 'Come Hell and High Water` - the only difference is Ritchie Blackmore's participation which is better. On Come Hell... we feel his lack of enthusiasm and here on 'Live in Europe` he is still on the mood for playing with Deep Purple.
The songs are great and it is a must have for any hard core fan.

a perfect live analog recording here...i got a copy of the atlantic vinyl release from my uncle's impeccable 70's funk/soul collection. i lit up when i saw george duke's mug on the front, and was thrilled to see perfect vinyl...i was blown away by the quality of the music, and the quality of the recording itself. this one opens up with a giant version of hip pockets. duke, cobham, and scofield stand and deliver a nice snapshot of mid 70's power fusion. you can hear exactly why mid 70's zappa was so perfect when you hear george duke play with other musicians. his contribution was immense. this recording just comes together well. i'd grab up a copy immediately if i hadn't transferred the recording from vinyl already.

bottom line: oozy, funky, rhythmic, perfect, fun, complex, and extraordinary fusion from some extremely talented musicians at the peak of their pioneering. buy it now.

Duke And Cobham Are ALIVE!!!.......2003-08-30

We're all well aware of Billy Cobham's talents but this serves at presenting George Duke in his ecclectic pre-Reach For It" stage-the only CD evidance taht I know of."Hip Pockets" and
the John Scofield guitar-whipped "Ivory Towers" make a powerful
starter while the avante-garde synthesizer racket on Duke's own
"Frankstein Goes To The Disco puts the artists current preoccuptaion with bland commercial pop to shame!Not to be ignored is the Sun-Ra-sih rap of "Space Lady"-it's Billy Cobham all over but a whole other side of George Duke,one that we don't see too often these days.A "new colossus" as it were!

I remember hearing this album at my friend's house a few years ago and just being blown away. I have searched every used vinyl store since looking for it to no avail. Finally it's been re-released on CD and I can die a happy man. "Hip Pockets" and "Almustafa the Beloved" rival any jazz-funk-rock fusion songs ever. Cobham's dumming is incredibly intense, Duke's keyboard sounds are revolutionary, Scofield is funky, and Al Johnson is one of the tighest bassists ever. There is some really out stuff on this album that not everyone will like but there are also a few really amazing gems on it. I wish they'd release more of the tapes from this concert! If you buy this album you will not be dissapointed

Not Cobham's best.......2001-03-03

I saw this band live twenty-five years ago and still have the original vinyl. It is a very dated disc and does not reach the level of his first four albums:Spectrum,Total Eclipse, Crosswinds and Shabazz which are classics from the 70's.

I can't believe this is a 25 year old live analog recording!! Every song is terrific, the European audience is quiet and attentive, and these guys have a fusion sound to transcend any rock-jazz recording I've ever heard. Makes me want to get every George Clinton or Stanley Clarke recording I can get my hands on and lock myself in for a day.
