Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.

Savoy Brown at Its Best.......2006-07-11
Desert Island Disc.......2006-06-18
So, again, why this?
Well, it's three-fold. For one thing, this is one of the earliest albums I owned at age 13 in 1971. I won it in a shoe store drawing (yes, a shoe store), and, when I saw the cartoonish cover, was highly skeptical. "What kind of weird stuff could this be?" It turned out to be excellent. Even a dorky kid who sawed away badly on the cello could recognize the talent.
Secondly, it's a unique slice of British blues-rock from that era, the era that was ushering in all the heavy rock soon to be known as "metal," but which had its roots in the blues that most of the British Invasion bands were grounded in. Savoy Brown just held to the core longer.
Finally, the playing--the interaction between Simmonds, Stevens, Peverett, and Earl--is superlative. It's simple stuff, but if you listen to what everyone is doing you can't help notice how much they were in the groove with each other. That, babies, is what it's all about. (Great mix, too, if you are a guitarist or bass player.)
I listened to this thing about 200 times between 1971 and the mid-80s, when I sold my LP collection, but now that I have it again on CD I'm still in love.
I don't know why anyone born after 1960 would be reading this review, but if you're a young player exploring the early rock days, do yourself a favor and buy this unusual album. (You'll be the only one on the block, I guarantee.)
See Ya Later Alligator!.......2005-11-30
Lonesome Dave and Kim Simmonds were probably two of a handful of otherwise ham-fisted, rock-n-roll guitarists who actually knew how to play altered/extended jazz chords and solo on the changes - just like a REAL jazzman! Not to worry. Jazz this ain't. These dudes flat-out ROCK!
But just listen to Kim Simmonds play on Leavin' Again as his lead lines effortlessly slide between fire-breathing (yet smooth) Wes Montgomery-esque jazz stylings and then into the power blues of Eric Clapton ala Crossroads and then into BB King and then back to Wes Montgomery and so on and so forth. Yet Kim makes it all sound so cohesive and brands it with his own trademark sound. Really smart, stylish, yet wild and crazy playing on this one.
Dear reader: this is one of the great releases from the tail-end of the 60's. I always thought it was a shame that Stevens, Earl, and Lonesome Dave bailed to form Foghat. This round of Savoy Brown was superior in every way to ANYTHING Foghat ever accomplished. I always hoped the lineup would return. Alas, it is too late as Lonesome Dave left the physical realm several years back.
Anyway, click it! You'll love it! Give it to your favorite blues fan as a treat! Entertain your friends! Impress them with your superior musical knowledge and taste with this somewhat unheralded blues/rock masterpiece.
"See ya later alligator!"

A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08
Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.
These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.
One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.
My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."
My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."
The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."
Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)
A musical treat.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Not much of a Disney Princess CD!.......2006-05-04
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!
The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31
The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.
Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.
Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.
"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.
"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.
"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.
"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.
"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.
Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"
"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.
"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.
"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.
Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.
So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.
Another Repackaging Of Princess Favorites.......2004-04-21
Thank you very much for your time
Whose Princess Favorites???.......2003-10-15
My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.
We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?
I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!
Save your money!.......2002-04-30
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!

The term Irish tenor may be fraught with as many wrong-headed, anachronistic characterizations as any phrase in music. But Ronan Tynan not only returns here to the PBS airwaves that helped spread his fame as a member of the Irish Tenors trio, but he overturns a few clichés while delivering a live concert (recorded at the Royal Dublin Society in June 2002) that encompasses everything from Broadway and pop chestnuts to Italian operatic repertoire. Tynan rewards Irish traditions old and new (a medley of Brian Kennedy's and U2's "Life, Love & Happiness"/"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") and even makes left turns into folkie songstress territory (Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"). Backed by RTE Orchestra, the unlikely international star invests himself completely in all of it, his strong, crystalline voice playing off the traditions, while forging strong new bonds with the contemporary. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
