About the Artist
I was born in 1971 in St. Louis MO, but I've moved around so much in my life that I can't really say where I'm from. All in all I cannot say I've asked for much in life; only for selflessness. That's because, in time, I've found, that the only thing worse than needing someone is needing to be needed. As for love… Before you can ever truly know how to give it…you must have it. Found that out the hard way.

Most of my memories begin with an old plaid coat…patched jeans…Fordyce, Arkansas, mindless strolls with friends down sunny pea-gravel roads…picking plums...sellin' pop bottles and pecans...playing mother-may-I…building bicycles (never found the perfect back-end)...penny candy parties...and hide-n-go-get it... Ask me if much has changed...simple...still.

A huge pecan tree sits behind my grandmother's house, with an old rusty bench. I never met my grandfather Mack Talley Sr., but his spot remains. Don’t believe me? Check my grandmother's eyes.

My imaginary trails from pushing matchbox cars remain. Check my youth. The long talks with my father there remain. Check my wisdom. I am who I am. Regardless of where I go, I will always be who Jaylen and Tyra know.

Album Description

The towering tree at Rockefeller Center, midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bing Crosby singing White Christmas—these are among the core snapshots of an American Christmas. A holiday that fuses the sacred and secular, high-gloss entertainment and deep spiritual meaning, Christmas in the United States is built on longstanding rituals at the same time as new riffs are continually being invented. It has its own distinct identity, and in one of the most culturally diverse societies on the globe, a Christian holiday has risen as the country's most prominent.

The striking array of works conducted by Judith Clurman on this recording open a window onto the many facets of a contemporary Christmas. Most of these compositions were first performed at one of the annual Christmas-tree-lighting ceremonies at Lincoln Center, where Clurman has directed music-making since 1992, and many were commissioned for those events.

Judith Clurman knows how to work with singers, and the sound of her chorus is sumptuous on this CD. Just what you might want to have playing as the family is gathering for the holidays. And in a time of questioning and re-examination of what makes us Americans, the fact that this CD represents a wide variety of American composers doing their best to connect to beloved traditions makes this CD a winner. Hats off to New World for making a CD the record companies never would have...

Benjamin Lees has taken on a formidable task here, attempting to memorialize victims of the Holocaust in a symphony. Using the poetry of Nelly Sachs was an inspired idea, as she treats the subject in the only way it can be treated effectively--obliquely, focusing on details rather than the overall horror. But the three long movements, lasting more than an hour, don't maintain the same viewpoint; the music is unremittingly somber but lacking in distinctive elements. It winds up sounding like a soundtrack for a documentary, despite the eloquence of all the performers involved. Naxos's presentation (including poetry texts) and recording quality are excellent. --Leslie Gerber

Naxos is to be praised for bringing us so much otherwise unknown American music. I was knocked out by this symphony the first time I heard it and have listened to it now perhaps 15 times. I keep finding new things in it. Structurally it's as tight as anything I've ever heard from Lees, whose music I've explored for thirty years now. (I hope to God his new Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra are recorded soon; talk about a knockout!) I disagree with the preceding reviewer who complained about Kimball Wheeler's voice. It sounds luscious to me and perfect for the Jewish cantillation of the vocal part. Buswell is his usual sterling self. I heartily recommend this piece for its emotional wallop.

For Me, Disc is Disappointing in One Respect.......1999-12-26

There's so much to like about this CD - great piece of music, superbly played and well-conducted. James Buswell giving his all on the violin. A painful message to contemplate in those dark nights of the soul. It's all there -- BUT the mezzo-soprano solo. Sadly, Ms. Wheeler's voice is weak, at times to the point where one long-held note does not sound stable. She has her moments (where she sounds like the old British contralto Gladys Ripley, a voice of infinite sadness at "what-might-have-been"), but these are not enough to carry the day. It may be Ms. Wheeler had a bad cold the days they recorded (or got a Ukrainian version of Montezuma's revenge, who knows?). Well, given the price and unavailability of any other recording of the work (and the fact that the mezzo part is less than 50% of the symphony), I'd say buy it and experience the good music. (As you can see, no one else thought Ms. Wheeler was a liability.) But if at any time another recording comes along, you may want at least to compare the two.

A deep, powerful work.......1999-02-10

I have listened to other works of Benjamin Lees, but feel this is one of his finest achievements. The work is deep and powerful, and I found I definitely needed more than one listening to gain all the insight into its intricacies. The time spent was well worth it. This is a magnificent symphony and the composer should well be proud of what he has done. He has given another voice to the horrors of the Holocaust. The recording is terrific, well-played and sonically excellent. I realize I'm a layman, not a professional, but I would recommend this recording to anyone.

A master of tension and pathos.......1999-01-02

As I am allowed 1,000 words about this composition, I shall be brief. Mr. Lees has done in one symphony what has taken other composers in this century many compositions to attempt an overview of a period in history. He fills this wonderfully played recording with a constant tension of sounds that kept this listener with a tight grip on my chair. So many details in the Symphony. There is no point to delve. Oh well, the solo playing and singing, the texts all work. The orchestra, unknown to me, played with dedication as if they were living every moment. Give Mr. Lees credit for sounds of the truth that occurred in the darkest time in our century if not all history.

This Merry-Go-Round Doesn't Break Down!.......2005-04-12

Since several other reviewers have given very good descriptions of this CD, I won't re-hash here, but simply say I agree with what they've said. I will add my two cents on a few points not mentioned, though.

Since the Wurlitzer 165 band organ upon which these musical selections are played is in such good condition, we get a musically idealized version of what we once heard at the merry-go-round. The sonic reality often was quite a bit less, with imperfectly working instruments and the sound of the drive motor as it pumped away to turn the carousel, not to mention the noise of the crowd and the children shouting and squealing. This is no criticism of the CD, though, since it only purports to present the music; it would take a lot more than a CD to present a realistic facsimile of the total experience.

The liner notes are brief, but provide some interesting background on the origin of carousels and the words themselves. I think the writer, Tupper L. Turner, deserves credit for his/her efforts.

I was surprised to see Track #30 listed as "Waltz (Title unknown)" when opera lovers will immediately recognize it as two tunes from Verdi's opera "Il Trovatore" (The Troubadour). The first tune is the soprano/tenor duet in the Miserere scene of Act IV; the second is the baritone aria "Il balen del suo sorriso." In any case, neither is a waltz proper, for both are in 6/8, not 3/4 time.

The selection of tunes, of course, depends on availability of the paper rolls which encoded them. I liked most of the tunes, familiar and otherwise, pretty well, and with 31 tracks there's quite a bit of all kinds there, including "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down."

Overall, then, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the CD and the appropriateness of its content. There are several other CDs of this nature available, I know, but I'm not familiar enough with them to offer any comparisons. I just know that I like this one and am happy to have it in my collection. And I suspect that little children will love it!

Saluting the Wurlitzer 165.......2004-12-30

It's a toughie reviewing this album - I don't know quite how to rate it for the everyday listener, seeing as how band organ music is definitely an acquired taste. However, that said, if you happen to be a band organ nut, you're in for a treat with this CD. It's about as good as it gets.

Kudos to Klavier records for making a recording of this wonderful Wurlitzer 165 band organ - it sounds like a dream, and has transferred relatively well to CD format. My only complaint is that the glockenspiel sounds rather abrasive, and gets really grating when recorded onto a cassette tape. Otherwise, the album is pristine.

The tunes featured are all classic band organ offerings, and the rolls used are in splendid shape. The organ's mechanism performs beautifully - whatever "prominent Midwestern collection", as the liner notes read, it comes from is taking very good care of it.

Basically, this, alongside its sister album "Catch Another Brass Ring", stands as an ideal representation of what a Wurlitzer 165 should sound like. Band organ lovers will adore it. The average Joe? Hard to say...but it's certainly worth a try.

A must-have for anyone who loves band organs!.......2003-05-17

Play this CD on a system in another room, at low volume, for that ineffable feeling that there's a tumble-down old-fashioned trolley park just over the next hill.

The happiest music on earth!.......2002-09-17

This is the perfect antidote for the blues! It is absolutely impossible to feel down once you begin listening to this CD! I use it to give me a lift whenever I need it. I DARE you to not giggle with glee upon pressing the "play" button! If you have fond remembrances of carousel music as a child, you will get goosebumps and feel warm and fuzzy all at once when you listen to this! Why take anti-depressant drugs when you can cure the blahs quickly and naturally with this CD? An exceptionally clear recording, I bumped it down to four stars ONLY because I liked the musical selection slightly better on their follow-up album, "Catch Another Brass Ring."

Allen Shawn has composed a large catalog of chamber and piano music, 11 concertos and orchestral works, choral music, and several song cycles. He has composed incidental music for theater, two chamber operas to libretti by his brother, playwright Wallace Shawn, a one act children's chamber opera, music for ballet, and music for the film "My Dinner with Andre." He performs frequently as a pianist and has been a faculty member since 1985 at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. He is also the author of the book, Arnold Schoenberg's Journey, as well as many articles about contemporary music.

Festive & Wonderful.......2000-02-08

The Eaken Piano Trio is a glorious combination of terrific talent! They play so well together, it is as if there are six hands, playing three different instruments with one mind. Try any recording you can find of this tremendous trio!

Add a little "class" to your Holiday.......1999-12-16

This CD, like 1996's "Home for the Holidays", has the Eaken Piano Trio providing a wonderful change to the usual holiday musical fare. Here we get some familiar, and some not so familiar, holiday tunes presented in an intimate chamber setting (piano, cello, and violin) with wonderfully inventive arrangements. At times the music is jazzy, at times "classical", at times light and bouncy, at other times quiet and contemplative. But it is always beautiful. In addition to Christmas numbers a number of these selections center on Chanukah as well. This music is perfect for serious listening - the creativity will amaze - also as background music for entertaining during the holidays. Pick this one up and while you're at it grab the Eaken Piano Trio's earlier release, "Home for the Holidays", as well... at this price you can't afford not to.

I hope this talented ensemble releases some non-holiday music as well, to entertain us for the other eleven months of the year.

If you are not in the mood for Christmas, buy and listen to this CD. I guarantee your mood will change when you have finished. The choice of music and the sound is exquisite.

A great compilation.......2004-04-25

Ever since I got a disc of Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's favourite piano sonatas, I've had a special attention for his recordings and his view on music. To me, he is one of the best examples of a perfectionist. Lazy listeners call his way of playing pedantic but that is completely untrue. Listen more closely to any of is recordings and you'll hear an endless variety of colours, the most shimmering nuances and above all, tremendous warmth. But he is certainly not a perfectionist in the negative sense that is sometimes attached to the word: aside from being imposingly musical, his performances always have a great feeling of 'humanity'. There are many other great performers of the German repertoire (from Haydn to Brahms) but Brendel's recordings have a special familiarity to me, and he gives more than anyone else the feeling to me that the composer's genuine thoughts are present in the performance.

Brendel has a very special tone that accustoms itself very well to many different kinds of pieces. One of the essays in this great set deals with the many different sounds Brendel can create at the piano, something that intrigues me very much too. It is fascinating to hear how he touches the keys in his Mozart and Haydn recordings: here, he gets a sound out of the grand piano that sounds almost like the ancient fortepiano. Combined with his sharp and almost biting playing, he preserves some of the spirit of the time in which the works were composed, but combines this with the much richer and detailed sound of a modern instrument. Haydn's sonatas sparkle and so do Mozart's concertos.

In his Beethoven recordings, which are very well represented in this set, Brendel uses a somewhat similar style, but adapts more to the Beethovenian sound world: his tone is still aggressive but a little mellower and greater. He focuses a lot on small details and plays with a rather gentle sound in the variations, while his Hammerklavier doesn't avoid the grand gesture. The Piano concertos with Levine are full of joy and superbly crisp. Beethoven's works can be performed in a more massive or sweeter way, but that's what other recordings are for.

Brendel's Schubert is very notable for its total avoidance of the sweet and precious image of the composer that has settled somehow. Here, Schubert is presented as an ultimately dark and despairing composer, an image that is very appropriate regarding his general output. While Brendel sometimes tends to calm a bit of the hysteria in pieces like Beethoven's Appassionata, in Schubert he mainly emphasizes it. Hear how he attacks the Wanderer Fantasy, especially in the last minutes. Or how severely he gets the A minor sonata D784 to its throat. This is essentially the way I think Schubert should always sound.

It will be surprising for some to notice how much of Liszt has been recorded by Brendel, and also to hear how they sound. The Liszt recordings in this set show the composer from his most intellectual and imposing side. Brendel may generate an enormous sound that not everyone will associate with him from "Orage" in the Années de Pelerinage, but it is impressive rather than showy. Similarly, the Sonata receives the most detailed and complete performance I've heard, the Piano Concertos are simply stunning on all accounts and the variations on a Bach cantata show both the composer and the performer at their very best. It may be surprising to hear but I think you won't hear any better Liszt than this.

Finally there's a box dedicated to Brahms and Schumann. Brahms is another surprise. Brendel's D minor Concerto is one of the most impressive readings I've heard, close to Serkin/Szell, and his B flat is fine too, if a bit less impressive. His playing style here somewhat resembles that of his Liszt: it is rich, grand and always commanding. Few performers are as well able as Brendel is to match the endlessly complex musical thread of these two concertos. The fourth Ballade op.10 settles among the best readings - Kempff, Arrau, you name them. The Schumann pieces are performed in a way resembling Beethoven's smaller works: they create the same familiar living-room image, and it gets even more beautiful when oboist Heinz Holliger joins him to play a few folksong-like pieces. The set closes with a wonderful Schumann fantasy.

The track listing say that there's a bonus disc included as well, containing Brendel's first recording of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, but my own set did actually not contain this bonus disc. With or without that disc, this is a set any piano aficionado should not miss. The only drawback can be the price, which is pretty high (not surprising with such a huge set)--if you can find it at all, now that the set seems to be OOP. At any cost, this is one the best box sets I own. If contains a thorough look at one of the most profound and intellectual artists of recent time and gives endless enjoyment.

Liszt.......2001-05-11

I recently purchased the boxed set of just the Liszt items from The Art of Alfred Brendel. I learned to love Schubert piano music by listening to Brendel, but Liszt was something of an exploration. And what a guide to take you on the journey! If you get the opportunity to get the Liszt set don't turn it up in preference to the more respected composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc.

Incomparable Brendel.......2000-12-29

I wish to focus on the works of Liszt included in this gargantuan package. Brendel is held in universal esteem, regarded by many as the greatest living pianist. His reputation is of unimpeachable musicality and seriousness of purpose (which does not contradict his ability to find musical humor wherever it lurks). He shows unparalleled ability to get to the musical core of the "Great Repertory" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms); his performances leave mere pianism far behind. His championing of Liszt's music is especially important for just this reason. Liszt is too often accused of flashy superficiality. Nobody can accuse Brendel of this fault. And his Liszt recordings are among the most intellectual and probing, yet most moving, of any. He reveals Liszt as a daring and supremely important master. The pyrotechnics of the piano concerti are invested with real meaning, and the utterly spare, laconic late pieces become profound meditations on the human condition. His readings of Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude and of the Variations on Bach's "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" make one grateful for the very existence of music -- and for the capacity to capture it for posterity in recordings.

Beutiful.......2000-04-05

This is beutiful music. I have played some of his pieces on my flute and they are absoultly gorgeous. If you are a true classical music lover then you must buy this and have many nights by the fire with this wonderful music in the backround.
