A Hundred Miles or More carries the subtitle A Collection, and what a curious collection it is--cuts from soundtracks, side projects, and tribute albums, plus guest duets on other artists' albums and five previously unreleased tracks. In other words, this is a collection of Alison Krauss performances that have never appeared on an Alison Krauss album, though it holds together better than such a grab-bag approach might suggest. Highlights such as her duet with Brad Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby" and her a cappella rendition of "Down to the River to Pray" from O Brother, Where Art Thou? will be familiar to most Krauss fans, though it's doubtful that many share her infatuation with retro rocker John Waite (with whom she revives his "Missing You" and duets on a cover of Don Williams's "Lay Down Beside Me."). Other projects represented range from Disney to the Chieftains to the Louvin Brothers (she duets with James Taylor on their "How's the World Treating You." There's minimal contribution from her Union Station band--making this a solo release by default--and little information to indicate whether the previously unreleased tracks were outtakes from earlier releases or recently recorded for this one. --Don McLeese More Alison Krauss

Once an Outlaw, later a Highwayman, now an elder statesman, Willie Nelson joins forces with Merle Haggard and Ray Price (both of whom have recorded duet albums with Nelson) in a celebration of the classic country song. Everything about this is defiantly old school, from the production by veteran Fred Foster and the musical support from steel guitarist Buddy Emmons and Texas Playboy fiddler Johnny Gimble and vocal backing from the Jordanaires to songs from the likes of Harlan Howard, Leon Payne, and Lefty Frizzell. For all of the artists' generational ties, their differences are what distinguish the project: Nelson is the reediest and most conversational vocalist, Haggard the bluesiest; and Price remains the quintessential countrypolitan crooner. Whether they're harmonizing on Mickey Newbury's "Sweet Memories" or trading verses on Howard's "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," the vocal blend suggests old friends having the time of their musical lives. Guests include Vince Gill (on "Heartaches by the Number") and Kris Kristofferson (on his Why Me Lord"), but a trio like this doesn't need much outside assistance. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
Let's be clear: Last of the Breed is a story - actually, a novel, if not an epic - unto itself. The title sums it up pretty well: On these two discs three classic performers, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, band together on songs they've known and loved for years.Their contributions don't need elaboration. Each is a legend. All three hark back to a time that's in some ways gone. When you consider the lives they've lived, the world that formed them as artists, and even the landscapes they knew as they began playing in beer joints and backwater clubs long ago, then the truth of those four words, Last of the Breed, comes clear.
Look a little closer, and they take on another reference, to the songs as well as to the giants who celebrate them here. Whether drawn from deep in the tradition, back from the well of Gene Autry, Lefty Frizzell, and Floyd Tillman, or picked from the more recent catalogs, this music conveys a feeling that might be mistaken for nostalgia but is in fact a timeless eloquence.
They don't write or sing `em like this anymore.

It's a great and perhaps impossible challenge to encapsulate the highlights of Johnny Cash's vast musical catalog in a two-CD, 36-song collection like this. Yet, though it barely scratches the surface, 2002's The Essential Johnny Cash--part of a series of compilations and reissues celebrating Cash's 70th birthday--does present three-dozen satisfying and balanced snapshots of some of the Man in Black's most memorable work for the Sun, Columbia, and Mercury labels. Above all else, these 36 selections are wonderful reminders of Cash's rustic eclecticism. Cuts range from '50s Sun rockabilly classics like "Hey Porter" and "I Walk the Line" to '60s country-folk gems like "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" and Cash's memorable duet with Bob Dylan on Dylan's "Girl from the North Country." Also included are more recent samplings of Cash's celebrated collaborations, including "Highwayman," which he recorded in 1984 with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson as part of the on-again, off-again supergroup the Highwaymen, and "The Wanderer," a fervent gospel collaboration with U2 that appeared on the band's 1993 album, Zooropa. --Bob AllenCustomer Reviews:

Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. --Colin EscottCustomer Reviews:
At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash.......2007-06-27
But, after seeing the movie " Walk the Line " I was hooked.
I just had to get me some Johnny Cash and see what the big deal was.
The thing I like about him is that he is such a great story teller.
Every song he sings makes you believe that what he is singing about
happened to you. To me, it really doesn't sound like country at all.
It's more like blues with a little country and rock mixed in.
I can see why the " Folsom Prison " album was his best album.
The songs he did on this album are some his best work.
Some of my favorites are " Cocaine Blues ", " Jackson ", " Busted ".
and " I Got Stripes " just to name a few.
If you don't know, or your not a big country fan like I was.
Pick up this cd and let Johnny Cash the man in black make a believer

It's been a long five years between releases, but Kim Richey has clearly spent the time wisely, perfecting these 10 new songs. She clearly enjoys working with different cowriters, since eight tunesmiths--including such contemporaries as Joan Osborne and Mindy Smith--collaborate with her on this superb set. Producer Giles Martin (George's son, producer of the Beatles' Love) injects a somewhat more pop-oriented approach that works wonderfully with this introspective and intricately crafted material. "Jack and Jill" colors in the missing backstory of the children's ditty with sumptuous yet frilly harpsichord, flute, kazoo, and whistling. The title track recalls a snappy Suzanne Vega, adding multi-instrumentalist Billy Mowbray's sax, mellotron, and vibes, while "Not a Love Like This," the Osborne co-write, brings reverbed guitar and a bit of retro to arguably the album's finest and most robust melody. "Pretty Picture," the only tune composed solely by the singer, is a tender, intimate love ballad sung with heartbreaking sensitivity. Richey is in sparkling voice throughout, sounding inspired by her band, the production, and especially the magnificent tunes. The laid-back, layered sound on "Another Day" and the sprightly "I Will Follow" perfectly capture the nuances of their lyrics with subtlety and class, two aspects of the singer's style that have never been compromised. There's not a weak track here, and the sharp sequencing makes this an album that ebbs and flows with Kim Richey's richly articulated vision. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
Newly signed to Vanguard Records, Kim Richey is set to release her first collection of new music in five years on July 10th. Chinese Boxes was produced by Giles Martin and recorded in London at Eastcote Studios and Air Studios Lyndhurst. Giles Martin's most recent project was The Beatles "Love" soundtrack, which he collaborated on with his father, Sir George Martin.Chinese Boxes is a collection of 10 beautifully crafted soulful songs. The first single "Jack and Jill" (and lead track) gives the couple in the nursery rhyme a bit of a back-story - and the listener a hint of the discoveries to come. The title track tries to define a mysterious person before giving way to "Drift", a poignant love song (co-written with Mindy Smith). "The Absence of Your Company" showcases Richey's vocal vulnerability in a sparse instrumental setting while the cautionary "Another Day" highlights Kim's stunning sense of melody. The album-closing "Pretty Picture", is an intimate ballad that speaks honestly of true love.
Fans and critics alike have long awaited new music from the critically appraised singer/songwriter, whose other albums include Kim Richey (1995), Bitter Sweet (1997), Glimmer (1999), Rise (2002), and The Collection (2004).

Kim's Golden Vibes.......2007-07-19
Chinese Boxes is a lyrical pleasure with just enough of her country roots restored to please even her older fans like me. While all the songs on this CD are outstanding, there are several that actually send chills down my spine when I hear her beautiful voice, filled with hope and despair and joy and sadness. Kim's voice is a soothing, supple embrace for the soul.
This CD is HIGHLY recommended.
More of the same = Excellence again and again........2007-07-12
Although I think it may be a disservice to even remotely classify her efforts as pop. In the conventional sense of the word anyway.
Her music is deep enough to create it's own mini genre. You'll probably find yourself, as I often do, craving Kim Richey music. There aren't a great deal of people in my music collection I can truly say that about. Sting comes to mind... maybe Peter Gabriel or Sheryl Crow. Where their production sense and musicianship, coupled with their songwriting and performances, allow you to keep the CD continuously running. Music always interesting, with solid melody, that leads you somewhere satisfying.
Every one of her albums is consistent from start to finish, and this one 's no different (Yogi Berra anyone?).
And how many albums do you own, where you really enjoy 90% or more of the music on that album? Two of the only things you'll ever find annoying about Kim Richey's music, is that there isn't enough of it, and you don't have as many people you can talk to about her material, because they're just simply not aware yet.

Dream Theater has built a career on delivering some of the most consistently strong progressive rock albums in history and Systemic Chaos proves no exception. Built upon the trademark musically diverse but stylistically reliable principles that made albums such as Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought instant classics, this album features new career highs such as "Prophets of War," "Forsake," and "Constant Motion." Although the band has flirted with commercially viable material in the past, especially on 2005's solid and exciting Octavarium, Systemic Chaos proves unrelenting in its pursuit of pure heavy rock. There are plenty of surprises in store, even for stalwart fans, perhaps one of the reasons that Dream Theater remains in a class by itself, ahead of the pack and ahead of the times. A truly outstanding album by any measure.--Jedd BeaudoinAlbum Description

A return to form, of sorts.......2007-07-16
"The Ministry of Lost Souls" is easily one of their three best songs of the 00's, "Repentance" demonstrates that they do in fact have the ability to slow it down and craft a wonderful, mellow song without having to remind listeners of their chops every other minute, and "In the Presence of Enemies" is a solid epic that is broken into two pieces and bookends the record. "The Dark Eternal Night" is arguably the heaviest song they have ever written. It is ripe with distorted almost death metal-like vocals, heavy guitar riffs, and plenty of technical flash, which normally would be a bit too over-the top for me, but in this instance, it comes across as the band just trying to have a little fun. It is mindless metal song, but it is good fun to crank up while cruising on the freeway.
On the flip side, the lead single from the album, "Constant Motion," is a strong contender for worst Dream Theater song ever. The verses smack of Metallica-wannabe syndrome, there are some truly embarrassing vocal moments by drummer Mike Portnoy (who really ought to stick to just playing drums, and leave all of the vocals to James LaBrie), and a keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess that merely sounds like a game of "let's see how many notes I can jam into the smallest space possible." Fortunately, "Constant Motion" is the only clunker on this record. The rest is all at least very good.
One more thing...the only other negative thing I can really say about this album is that the lyrics are, to put it nicely, not good. But then again, who really listens to Dream Theater in search of good lyrical content? The days of Kevin Moore crafting lyrical masterworks are long gone, so for now, it is best to focus on the music, most of which is very good.
Ups and Downs... But Too Inconsistent.......2007-07-14
They've probably come up with about 20-25 minutes of good, original music with this album. I especially like "In The Presence of Enemies" and "Repentance," the continuation of Mike Portnoy's saga. Parts of the CD are worth listening to; me, I'll stick with Images and Words.
could have sucked worse.......2007-07-13
Dream Theater will of course never return to my favorite area: I&W and Awake, but hopefully they won't dive too far down the TOT/Octavarium tunnel again either. This album is probably the best since 6DOIT, and I've only heard a few songs from that album. Because I like albums based on a song-by-song basis, there is no need to provide a breakdown since I don't think my interest in individual songs will help the fanbase determine the value of the entire album. Just understand that James LaBrie should have retired long ago, and that the rest of the band is still making Dream Theater-branded music - complete with all influences shining and all composition skills engaged. Musically, I am not aware of any competition when it comes to diversity and depth. Lyrically and vocally, ...well, I wish the band would write the rest of their albums as instrumentals.
What a surprise!.......2007-07-12
At first listen I enjoyed all the songs, the overall sound of the album, the production values, the atmosphere. I could even stand Labrie's vocals.
This is the best album by Dream Theater, in my opinion.
Derivative at times, but eventually addictive.......2007-07-11
In The Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 breaks from the last few Dream Theater albums by opening with a quick bass/guitar unison instead of a slow burn. Unfortunately, that's the last surprise that track has in store, as it proceeds to trot out the requisite Rush near-quotes (Natural Science here) and key-guitar unisons for 5 minutes of fairly dull instrumental meandering and 4 minutes of equally dull vocals. Forsaken is where a definite Euro-metal twist starts to come into play - a twist that gives the album most of its flavor. From the chilly piano intro to the pinch harmonic-heavy riff to the soaring, harmonized chorus, this one could have been written by Sonata Arctica, and that's definitely not a bad fit for Dream Theater. Tack on John Petrucci's best guitar solo on this record, and you have an early highlight. Constant Motion settles early into a straightforward thrash groove, and while drummer Mike Portnoy doesn't smother the groove in overplaying as he has sometimes been known to do, this one is merely solid.
The Dark Eternal Night is the first major highlight. Take one completely awesome guitar riff, add a rhythmic, aggressive vocal, toss in some actually exciting instrumental gymnastics in the middle (complete with Dream Theater's first Slayer-esque breakdown) and you have a killer song. It doesn't hurt at all that the lyrics dispose of DT's standard issue faux-introspective poetry and go straight for a far more entertaining tale of demons and monsters - Metallica's The Thing That Should Not Be is a clear influence, and a well-chosen one.
Repentance is a continuation of The Glass Prison/This Dying Soul/The Root of All Evil, and the first of those four to be a ballad. Unfortunately, it's lame, with an overplayed verse, an underplayed Floydian harmony section, and the biggest waste of prog-metal talent on record I've ever heard. Seriously, if you have the profound good fortune to have Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson as guests on your record, they should do something more than speak. Fortunately, this misstep is almost entirely forgotten by the end of the fantastic next track, Prophets of War. The mark of Muse is all over this, but thank goodness for that danceable beat, lo-fi mellow section, and big finish, thank goodness that DT wrote a set of political lyrics that actually aren't that far behind the times, and thank goodness that they seem to take a side with those lyrics. It's good fun.
The Ministry of Lost Souls is good - its balladry is suitably tender, its chorus is sufficiently huge. Unfortunately, long-time Dream Theater fans will recognize most of the playbook, and as a result this one doesn't wear too well. In The Presence of Enemies Pt. 2 is better than Pt. 1, mainly because it seems more tightly structured while at the same time visiting more places.
What's strange about this album is that I strongly disliked it on first listen, but came back for what I did like and wound up enjoying it - it has a better aftertaste than a foretaste. Systematic Chaos' most significant flaw is that long-time Dream Theater fans will know all its tricks - but then again, that's a pretty major flaw, because new fans shouldn't be starting here. I don't know whether I can properly recommend this one or not, because it could just as easily inspire strong dislikes. I enjoy it, though. Recommended tracks: Forsaken, The Dark Eternal Night, Prophets of War.

With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. Which makes it all the more baffling that a surprisingly large chunk of the disc is given over to mood-enhancing soundscapes like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres." Sonically relentless and visually groundbreaking only begin to describe the Tool experience. Formed in Los Angeles, CA in 1990, Tool has cemented themselves in today's hard music community with uncompromising attitude and vision. Their Best Work.......2007-07-18
NOT FOR THE MUSICALLY WEAK MINDED!.......2007-07-16
While I agree that this is not by any means Tool's heaviest offering, I think that to criticize them for changing (or rather evolving) their sound is unfair and an illogical contention. Tool has, and always will be, a band focused on musical progression and evolution. If they just kept making more albums like Aenima and Lateralus, they would be betraying their own goal of musical advancement. After all, Tool, like it or not, has always been about doing things their way.
10,000 days is simply a newer more mature Tool, just like every new Tool record. The lack of heaviness would indicate that the members of Tool have found other ways to express themselves, as they have moved on from simply just being loud. Tracks like Rosetta Stoned and Vicarious are still aggressive and hard hitting, but are performed in a controled and deliberate manner. The highlight of the album, however, is the two song epic Wings for Marie and 10,000 days. Very rarely do you find the best part of the album to be the softest songs, but in this case, it is undeniably so. Here the minimalism only serves to build up the tension all the way to the very end. In my opinion, this is one of the most powerful songs that Tool has ever written. Other notable tracks include the schizophrenic track Rosetta Stoned, and The Pot.
To sum up, this is just business as usual for Tool. Every album is meant to stand on their own, and is meant to push them as musicians. Those who expected another Lateralus or Aenima are approaching this in a completely backwards manner. For a moment, forget that Tool ever wrote prior album and just listen to THIS album and let it stand on its own merit.
STICK A FORK IN TOOL - THEY'RE DONE !!!!!.......2007-07-11
Tool is evolution, not revolution.......2007-07-08
Tool fans are known as some of the most rabid, die-hard fans in the music industry, not just just because of their loyalty but because of their enthusiasm: spending an hour in a Tool mosh pit is like spending six hours in a Slayer or Pantera pit (I know this from personal experience, and I was a Slayer fan before I even heard of Tool). It is then natural to expect some outcry at each CD release because some fans will always expect more of the same. Tool just isn't that band.
Most fans eventually seem to take a liking to each new CD after a few months of listening (or at least stop bitching about it) because Tool works on each CD until it is perfected. The style or sound of Tool may not be what some people like, but the CD is still a masterpiece. This is not to say that Tool CDs are a "Learn to Love" sound; they are not. It is just impossible to predict what the next Tool album is going to be like, and the new sound always shocks some people. Despite this it is almost unheard of for someone to renounce their fanship.
10,000 Days represents the 5th sound from Tool, and is in many ways the most demanding of its listeners. Tool is, if nothing else, heavy, therefore the most shocking aspect of 10,000 Days is that it has, at least at first glance, a lighter sound. Realistically the CD has plenty of drop D power cords, massive distortion and beats all characteristic of heavy bands (with, of course, the intricacy and complex composition/timing obligatory to all Tool music), but the album also has another form of heaviness, which is the juxtoposition of lighter rhythms with the heavier rhythms. This is more demanding to the listener because someone who is expecting an album containing the same songs as previous albums may ignore the lighter side of the CD. In effect many listeners only heard half the CD on the first try.
This juxtoposition of lighter and heavier styles is most reminiscent of A Perfect Circle's first album (obviously not a coincidence), however Tool has certainly perfected it and created an album that truly redefines what heaviness is about.
The lyrics of Tool have always been enigmatic, if not stygian, and controversial, but 10,000 Days was more shocking to Tool's fans than the rest of society. The title cut almost seems an acceptance of judeo-christian religions, which would be shocking, if not outright betrayal, to the fanbase. Knowledge of the story behind the song quickly alleviates that idea.
Tools music is certainly worthy of 5 stars (or more) by itself, but this is a CD that truly deserves more than 5 stars. Like other Tool albums buying the CD gets you more than music, it is also art. Tool's latest installment contains a serious of 3D images of the typical Tool style. To be clear, these are not the cheesy red and blue captain EO 3D; they are very high quality and immersive works. Going back to the music, the album is around 77 minutes long, even taking out the few filler type tracks the album contains as much music as other bands release on 2 CDs. The CD also sold for 12.99 USD on debut, far cheaper than many bands that spend less than half as much time on their music.
To recap: You get more music, that's higher quality as well as amazing artwork for much less than most other CDs. Even non-Tool fans should be able to respect a band that really goes above and beyond the standard.
There is much speculation that 10,000 Days may be the penultimate (or perhaps last) Tool album, but if Tools record is any indication one thing is certain: as long as Tool keeps playing, we'll keep listening.

You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:
Come Into The Garden.......2007-07-14
One of the most prized recordings in my collection has long been the Nick Drake bootleg, Tamworth-In-Arden 1967/68. I usually avoid buying boots, but couldn't resist the plethora of completely unheard/unreleased songs. Now, most of that material has been lovingly compiled (with a few surprises, as well as omissions) & cleaned up considerably in terms of the sound quality. Half of the songs are written by Drake & half are rather obscure covers, including 3 songs by the legendary Jackson C. Frank. Fans of Drake will hardly be disappointed.
Among the self-penned selections, the real highlights are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into The Garden". "Rain" and "Bird Flew By" reveal a talent that is nearly fully formed. "Strange Meeting II" & "Been Smoking Too Long" were included on the Fruit Tree box set appendix, Time Of No Reply. Both are welcome here. (According to the liner notes that collection is soon to be re-released).
More than likely, fans will not be as thrilled with the two songs, written & sung by Nick's mother, Molly. But to be frank, I like them both even if they are a bit jarring amidst the rest of the set. Its nice to hear where Nick got some of his talent from.
Lovingly compiled & with copious liner notes (Nick's sister, Gabrielle's are quite moving) this is certainly worth the price of admission for longtime & new found fans of this brilliant and truely unique artist.

With its heavy-duty distortion, weighty rhythms, and cynical lyrics, Tool is a heavy metal band for the '90s. Rather like Metallica circa ...And Justice for All, the sound is focused heavily on texture, with vocals and guitars layered one atop the other, and heart-pounding drums underlying everything. There's not a whole lot of variety on Tool's second full-length album--most of the songs start off fairly low-key, kicking into high gear for the chorus, and repeat--but Maynard James Keenan's distinctive voice, the prog-rock stylings over a heavy metal base, and a supremely unhealthy dose of vitriol make this the perfect album to bang your head to. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:
