If it wasn't for the revolutionary artwork, it would be easy to suspect that the Chemical Brothers were parodying their roles as electronic musicians with that album title. After all, people have accused the genre of sounding redundant for years. But while contemporaries like the Prodigy and Fatboy Slim fall by the wayside, on their fifth studio album Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons sound positively reinvigorated, as the dreamy textures of 2002's Come With Us give way to a set of sharper, more focused songs, from the politically charged "Left Right" to the wide-screen "Close Your Eyes." It's epic stuff, particularly when A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip magically appears to give lead-off track "Galvanize" a vintage hip-hop kick. But because this is as much about the future as the past, the British duo also recruits Kele Okereke of underground punk-funk stars Bloc Party and the London vocal group The Magic Numbers to help push things forward. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

All My People March.......2007-02-21
Galvanize is a classic merging of pop sensibilities with an infectious, signature rhythm. Boxer is pure 1970s funk, but the sonic overload of Come Inside & The Big Jump - the layers of sounds merge into a clubland tour-de-force - demonstrates how an ambitious electronic vision can be accomplished in the studio.
Believe & Hold Tight London pack solid grooves, while Surface To Air would arguably be the top choice on a CD not packed with so many solid cuts.
But it's Left Right that propels Push The Button. If you have any concern at all with the perverse drama of the world stage, the song will make you sit down & think. And that means The Chemical Brothers ultimately did push the right button.

Excellent Chemical Brothers Album!.......2006-10-10
I've been a fan for years and am always pleased with their offerings.
I've turned some of my younger professors on to the Chems as music to code to. Launch your developer, pop in the CD, or launch iTunes and code on.
This has almost replaced Surrender as my favorite Chemical Brothers' album.

The real arms around me just faded........2006-07-27
The person who got me into The Smiths was my dad, British junkie that he is, and when he found this CD buried in a little indie record store, he was overjoyed and mystified, saying that he'd completely forgotten about this album (hmmm, now what does that tell us). So, I copied it and commenced listening.
1. A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours
Probably the best song on the album, actually. With a mock-ghostly, dramatic beginning, blossoming into a catchy and (I wince to use this word, but I must) bouncy vocal preformance. 5/5 stars
2. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
This song is either about homosexual rape or something beyond the realms of my understanding. And what's with the gutteral growling Morrissey's been toying with? This song actually has a really good beat. 3/5
3. Death of a Disco Dancer
This is an example of what came out of Morrissey's mind late one night after downing just a few too many. A strangely artificial beginning, dry lyrics, not my favorite song on the album. 3/5
4. Girlfriend In A Coma
This one I like, despite the very un-Smiths-like sound to it. Morrissey's characteristically grim humor abounds, if looking through another person's eyes (do you really think he has a GIRLfriend?). 4/5
5. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
A good title, if nothing else! But also a good vocal, good lyrics (when are they not?). But Moz, who is the "shy, bald Buddhist"? 4/5
6. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, but through my tears I couldn't help but wonder who the people were, screaming in apparent agony in the backround. Oh, but I love this song. "Last night I felt real arms around me. No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." How true. 5/5
7. Unhappy Birthday
Hilarious like a sledgehammer on your head! With a mock-cocky rhythm, and cheerfully hateful lyrics, I can't help liking this. 4/5
8. Paint A Vulgar Picture
A pretty good idea lyrically, but they carry it on a bit too long. A strong dosage of reality, but not done particularly well, I must say. Except for the "dance my legs down to the knees" bit. 3/5
9. Death At One's Elbow
Oh, Morrissey and Marr, WHY? It's upbeat to the point of painful, the lyrics make little sense, and dear God was that a tambourine??? Goodbye my love indeed. 1/5
10. I Won't Share You
In my father's words, "beautiful". Well, he was never much for analyzing, but indeed it is. An acoustic is always a good way to end an album. Written for Marr, possibly? 5/5
There you are. Rate me, hate me, bless me, help me (wait, who am I talking to) keep scrolling down your computer screen, I don't care. My overall take on Strangeways, Here We Come is 4/5 stars. Cheers.
Worst Smiths Album Ever........2006-06-01
Then you have this album. Now, I was quite a rabid fan back in the day - until I bought this album. I tried very very hard to like this album. But the dreadful, overproduced music coupled with Morrissey's obvious creative block made for some bad listening. I am thinking right now of the lyrics to "Stop Me.." and how bad they are. They actually make me cringe. Does repeating phrases 3 times in a row, 4 times in a song, compare to "Rusholme Ruffians"?
Like I said, if you are working backwards throught their catalog, you might think of this as a good album. But when I heard it, I knew it was over. I think this could only appeal to fans of Morrisseys solo stuff, which I really really can't stomach.
Call them Genius and be done with it.......2006-03-09
who cares if it's the worst album?.......2006-02-25
Well, I'd trust the band members over anyone else..........2006-01-31
I personally think 'Meat is Murder' was best, but I remember listening to Strangeways very heavily in 1987, and having a complete feeling of sadness, because you knew it was over. Not because it was poor in any way, but because the mood of the record was so alone.

If the combination of veteran bluesman John Hammond with contemporary Philly hip-hop/soulman G Love (a.k.a. Garrett Dutton) sends shivers of fear down the spines of blues purists, the duo's collaboration here shows there is nothing to be worried about. Despite differences in age, backgrounds, and styles, they have shared bills and obviously respect each other's talents. Hammond, who has recently dipped his toes into songwriting waters after being solely an interpretive artist for nearly 40 years, jumps into the river with a whopping five originals. Love contributes a few as well, and the result is an album that rocks harder and with more intensity than most artists half Hammond's age can muster. Add covers from Little Walter, Junior Wells, and Tom Waits (Hammond's 2001 release Wicked Grin, comprised predominantly of Waits songs, is one of his biggest sellers), and the result is one of the finest and most diverse discs in the bluesman's bulging catalog. The stripped-down backing band of journeymen including bassist Marty Ballou, ex-Waits drummer Steven Hodges, and keyboardist Bruce Katz provides plenty of sparks with which Hammond--who plays rowdy guitar and sizzling harp throughout--can catch fire. Love adds his harmony vocals and rapping to his own "Tore Down," a near-perfect collision of blues and hip-hop and a song likely to get Hammond crossover acceptance with Dutton's more youthful jam-oriented audience. The jazzy "Eyes Behind Your Head" and a rollicking take on Dion's "If You Want to Rock and Roll" further expand Hammond's reach without either diluting his sound or distancing his core fans. In his mid-60s upon this album's release, he sounds loose, energized, and ready for another 40 years. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
It's a precious few artists who reinvent themselves at the age of 64, but blues luminary John Hammond proves himself the ultimate untraditional traditionalist as the dozen stellar songs on Push Comes to Shove illustrate. Push Comes to Shove marks an increased output in Hammond's original compositions- he penned five of the CD's 12 songs- and there's a bold collaboration with the album's producer, G.Love (the innovative and soulful Philly singer/guitarist and longtime Hammond fanatic), in the hip-hop-tinged blues of "Tore Down", as well as a handful of personalized renderings of traditional blues numbers, a musical modus operandi that has earned Hammond multiple Grammy nominations since his 1962 self-titled debut. Since then, Hammond has made 31 records and tours year-round, learning from and playing with musical greats and friends including Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, and Michael Bloomfield. Those unparalleled experiences and authenticity shine through brightly on Push Comes to Shove.Customer Reviews:

It's difficult to separate Aerosmith from their glorious/inglorious history--one that's seen more revivals than West Side Story. For better or worse, the stalwart Boston quintet carry a load of preconceptions that are impossible to shake. Thus Just Push Play begs the question: If this 12-song set was the product of a bunch of upstarts, would it cause much of a commotion? The answer: Absolutely! Working with coproducers and song collaborators Marti Frederiksen and Mark Hudson, Aerosmith have forged an album that gracefully fuses '70s hard-rock grit with contemporary gloss. The pop-infused likes of the sweeping "Jaded" and the insistent "Sunshine" best demonstrate the formula that Tyler, Perry, and company have settled on for now, while gliding strings surge over Tyler's patented screech and the no-nonsense grind of the four instrumentalists. Mailed-in lyrics and a few self-conscious nods to the times mar Just Push Play, but the pleasures to be had here overwhelm the album's deficiencies. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
One of my favorites!.......2007-07-08
Aerosmith's "Pet Sounds", or "Sgt. Pepper", take your pick.......2007-04-26
Aerosmith, being the classic rock band that they are, are treading a similar path in their evolution. And, they ended up coming to the same conclusion as the Beatles, which is that it's important not to lose touch with your roots-the original source of your inspiration and passion. Steven Tyler put it succinctly when he said "there's only so far you can take it (i.e. professional songwriters, multiple producers, pro tools) before you're just polishing a turd" to paraphrase. They have since revitalized and re-energized themselves by making a back-to-basics album filled with blues standards called "Honkin' On Bobo", which turned out to be the perfect antidote for those fans who were disenfranchised by the slick production of "Just Push Play".
With all of this being said, "Just Push Play" is alternately brilliant and cluttered. The disc bears repeated listening, because there are many, many great features buried in the mix. To suss them all out, play around with your equalizer, try it with and without headphones, and be sure to turn up the volume! You will find layer upon layer of vocal harmonies, strings, guitars and various types of "fairy dust" sprinkled throughout.
My only real criticism of the disc is simply that it has a somewhat linear quality to it, primarily due to the relentlessly high level of production on almost every track. There are some quality compositions here, and loads of personality (courtesy of Mr. Tyler), and quality musicianship is a given with this band. However, not every song deserves the "star treatment", and it would have been nice if they scaled back in some instances (just because you have 128 tracks doesn't mean you have to use every one of them!). Remember the old days when you had 2-3 radio-friendly singles, a couple of simple acoustic numbers, a ballad or two and some quirky B-sides for good measure?? You won't find that here. But it's still a solid 4-star effort from one of the best rock 'n' roll bands of all time. They've earned their place in rock history, and can do as they like at this point. Dry your tears classic rock fans!
The Next Step.......2007-03-12
for reasons unknown, the radio stations did not push this as hard as the last several Aerosmith releases, which is a shame because this is a very good CD...I don't think it's quite as good as nine lives but they were taking some chances which takes guts...there are more then enough great songs on here to make anyone happy,I think part of the problem was the choice in which song to release as a single,'Jaded' is a great song but it is a little on the slow side,I think a much better choice for a first single would have been 'Just Push Play' or 'Outta Your Head' and then follow that up with the absolutely gorgeous song 'Luv Lies' (one of the best they've ever recorded) but that's just my opinion...I think the CD would have done a lot better if people knew that it rocked rather then hearing 'Jaded' and thinking the whole album might be softer music
beyond beautiful is typical Aerosmith (in my opinion a very good thing) great rocking tune to start off the CD
Just push play - is just an awesome song,it rocks and has some very clever lyrics, one of the best songs on the CD
jaded - is another beautiful song,a great tune that should have been released as a single but only after a few of the others
fly away from here - brilliant, great slow song, lots of feeling and emotion
trip hoppin - a little bit different feel,still a good song,but a bit of a departure
sunshine - great song, lots of thought went into this, has a very different feel from other stuff Aerosmith did,I like it
under my skin - not one of the best
luv lies - perfect! this song is so beautiful, should have been a huge hit
a slow song that is just amazing
outta your head - next to luv lies, this is my favorite song on the CD,it kicks some serious butt!!!,great rocking song with great cleaver lyrics
drop dead gorgeous - another example of a different kind of vibe,it's a gamble that I think paid off, this song is great,I love the lyrics
light inside - one of the weaker songs,it doesn't suck but it isn't up to the rest of the album
avant garden - a beautiful way to close the album...a nice soft song filled with emotion
the upside - more then enough great songs to make any music fan smile, the songs are catchy and well done, the highlights are 'luv lies' 'outta your head' 'just push play' 'fly away from here' and 'beyond beautiful' and 'jaded'
the downside - a few filler songs, and a bit experimental for those expecting the 'classic' aerosmith sound
the bottom line - I highly recommend this CD to all Aerosmith fans...the songs are great, the production is awesome,if you're new to the band, start with 'O Yeah' and 'Young Lust' but this and Nine Lives are definitely worth having in your collection...donutman says so!!!
Stay away from this one!.......2007-02-27

In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the "greatest hits" you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it's difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. "The State I Am In" has never sounded better, while "Lazy Line Painter Jane," which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band's best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" is brutal and elegant. -Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
At long last, all seven of Belle And Sebastian's "Jeepster" EPs have been collected into a convenient 2-CD set. Often considered their best work, and previously only available as hard-to-find imports or in a box set, the EPs, consisting of 25 songs recorded from 1996-2001, are now available for the price of a single frontline CD. The four tracks from the EP "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" have never been released in the US before. Also available in a deluxe 3-LP gatefold vinyl set and a deluxe double CD hardbound book.Customer Reviews:

Awesome, the Push Stars got me hooked forever.
Most underrated band in the world!.......2005-02-19
About "Paint the town", here goes my review:
1) Claire: Awesome start, a somewhat dark song, but a perfect beginning. (5/5)
2) Outside of a dream: A mellow song, with heartfelt lyrics. The chorus is simply perfect! (5/5)
3) In the galaxy: An underrated song, but for me it's one of the best in the album. Chris' voice is really passionate in this one (5/5)
4) Lucky sevens: Catchy sound with a catchy chorus. Very good work in here (5/5)
5) Every angel : Again another flawless work (5/5)
6) Freedom: my least fav in the album, but still a very honest song with very good lyrics (5/5)
7) Paint the town: Another of my favs, this catchy tune will hook you up from the beginning. Funny and cheerful song (5/5)
8) Hanging by a thread: Sad and mellow song, yet one of my favs. Once more, the chorus is the standout here (5/5)
9) At sea: this song grows on you as you listen to it over and over. There's an instrumental part in the middle of it that just blows my mind! (5/5)
10) Dream came down: the faster song in the album, it's similar to Meltaway from their previous work. Very singable and even danceable, this sound will cheer you up, believe me. One of the best! (5/5)
11) Keg on my coffin: Similar to In the galaxy and Freedom, except that this one has fantastic lyrics. The thing about this song is the lyric, very clever and very true. (5/5)
12) Drifting away: A different and unique sound, it has much of the brazilian style called bossa-nova (I'm brazilian, by the way). I personally like it a lot, it's a good close to an amazing album, one of his best efforts to date. (5/5)
Strongly recommended! Also, try their 3 previous albums and their E.P. called tonight, they're all top notch, as well as this one!

Incredible from start to glorious finish.........2004-07-29
With tracks like "Outside of a Dream", "Lucky Sevens" and "Dream Came Down" you will have these lyrics memorized in record time. These guys are what the future of music needs to be: they're fun, and they put on one hell of a live show. I saw them open for Great Big Sea in Philadelphia this past spring, and they held their own marvelously. After a week with this album in your discman you'll be listening to it from start to finish again and again. Listen to the wailing, synthesized opening of "Lucky Sevens" and you get chills. The optimistic, cheerful and drunken lyrics of "Keg on my Coffin" can make anyone smile.
Insanely addictive and almost suspiciously talented, you need this album.
1- Claire- 4/5
2- Outside Of A Dream- 5/5
3- In The Galaxy- 4/5
4- Lucky Sevens- 5/5
5- Every Angel- 4/5
6- Freedom- 3/5
7- Paint The Town- 4/5
8- Hanging By A Thread- 5/5
9- At Sea- 4/5
10- Dream Came Down- 5/5 (#1 song of the album)
11- Keg On My Coffin- 5/5
12- Drifting Away- 4/5

One of the hottest guitar solos I have ever heard.......2007-04-02
This was always one of my favorite songs. I went through three copies of the LP but never got around to buying it on CD until today. Just hearing the samples brought me back to those days.
COOKS TO A SLOW BOIL.......2006-07-03
As was typical of Mann, he only penned two compositions for this album. One being "Man's Hope" (record executives were fond of making countless puns on Herbie's last name for album titles) and the other being the eponymous "Push Push". It is on "Push Push" that the band actually comes together of one mind. It is the longest cut and in many ways sounds as if it could have gone on for a longer time to fully flesh out the spirit of the moment. "Push Push" is easily worth the purchase of the album. But the album goes on to the Marvin Gaye's transcendent "What's Going On" and Aretha Franklin's mysterious "Spirit In The Dark".
After "Man's Hope", the album takes a definite lighter tone. "If" was a rather sentimental and gentle ballad by a band called Bread. It was extremely popular at the time across a wide swath of the young and old and so was considered something of a piece of drivel by those who's tastes run more with the Stones, Santana and Humble Pie. Nevertheless, undoubtedly if you hated it you put yourself in a definite minority and chances are your girlfriend just loved it. No great revelations as Mann does it here; but it is quite nice and pleasant--true to the song's essential spirit,
Things pick up with "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "What'd I Say". This is an unusual pairing to say the least. As with "If" and the band Bread, "Never Can Say Goodbye" was made a hit by the Jackson Five--another "kiddie" band you wouldn't allow near your Led Zeppelin records. Still, the song had been done in a cooler fashion by Isaac Hayes just slightly earlier and time has proven the "Never Can Say Goodbye" has legs all its own as a song. Of a more respectable pedigree is "What'd I Say". Most rockers kneel to the ground and raised their arms in honor of the great Ray Charles and this is one of his signature songs. So the pairing of a piece of "fluff" with a holy hymn of soul music was unusual to say the least if not obnoxious.
But Herbie Mann was not a musical snob. He just believed in music and let it play--trying to bring out the very best in the nooks and crannies you would suspect were there. As with most Mann albums, if you check your prejudices at the door it all is delightful and makes sense.
"Funky Nassau" is added as a bonus track to the CD edition typically because it came out of these same sessions. "Funky Nassau" had been available before in compilation albums and so is not a "gift" in the sense of something new. In an event, much like "Push Push", that cooks up to a slow boil with satisfying results.
This album stands on its music all by itself and deserves a higher reputation than it currently has. Its problem is twofold. The first being it is very much an artifact of its time. In 1971 the new openness toward sexually and the "New Morality" was just hitting full steam. The "New Morality" mostly consisted of unfettered carnal intercourse between men and women. The distinction between a gentleman and a horndog was blurred. The difference between a nice girl and a [insert your own gutter language here] became ill-defined and seemed to follow some sort of sliding scale. The "New Morality" celebrated the wonders of the joy of sex which did not necessarily have a permanent commitment involved--sex with no commitment at all to be stone honest--all courteously of THE PILL. (It would be a good ten years before AIDS would rear its ugly head.) Thus the overt suggestiveness of the title PUSH PUSH. In case you didn't get it the first time, on the inner sleeve of the album was a definite but spare drawing of a couple copulating. There on the cover of the album for all to see was a bare-chested Mann hefting his flute--well...I suppose you don't have to subscribe to Freud to get THAT.
It caused quite a stir at the time--somewhat like Clark Gable saying "Damn" in GONE WITH THE WIND--But nowadays we regard it as quite tame and dismissing the music all with the same hand. Not fair and not right.
Along with its notoriety, Playboy magazine embraced this Herbie (Hugh Hefner) Mann like a long lost child and pushed the album as the hip among hip. Thus we have something of the "Playboy Curse". Jazz fans who mainline their Coltrane and Davis directly into their veins quickly pronounced that anything so popular and championed by such a phoney sophisticated periodical cannot be worthy of serious attention much less admiration. And, of course, there is nothing so "un-hip" and last year's "hip".
Thus to the outer darkness Herbie Mann went. Years later, when Mann was sick unto death, only then was it recognized what a generous and genuine musician he was. Still, after all these years, a little condensation hangs around this album like newly poured asphalt on a city street on the bottom of your shoe.
This may not rank as Mann's best album; but it is certainly is one of the most pleasing and entertaining.
When Push, Push comes to Shove.......2006-03-15
Herbie Mann, Push Push.......2005-06-23
As for London Underground, this was very much Jazz-Rock, but it was more 75% rock, 25% jazz. I don't know, the flute sound isn't "full" enough for that kind of energy.
After these listening experiences, my aunt got me Herbie Mann at the Village Gate, which seemed uterly boring.
But.....with this album, a total different story. This is great fusion, jazz-rock, contemporary jazz, whatever you want to call it. This is that classic cover. (not one of the most sexiest covers of all time)
The musician appearences make this album even more enoyable. With this album, I'll sure check out some more 1970's Herbie Mann recordings. Herbie done good with this one!
pop goes the jazz.......2004-11-16
'Push Push' was released in 1971, directly on the heels of some of the most celebrated songs appearing in the collection. In March and April of that year Marvin Gaye took 'What's Going On' to number two on the national charts, The Jackson Five took 'Never Can Say Goodbye' to number two, and Bread took 'If' to number four. The other charting song is Ray Charles 1959 number six classic, 'What'd I Say'. The disc also offers two Mann compositions, the title track and 'Man's Hope', as well as a bonus track not appearing on the original vinyl, the Grammy winning 'Funky Nassau', which was penned by Bahamian songwriter Dr. Offff Fitzgerald and his cousin, Raphael Munnings. Aretha Franklin rounds out the songwriting, contributing 'Spirit In the Dark'. There is absolutely nothing to complain about in these selections; each is a stunner, with Mann's own work holding up well among the more highly touted commercial successes.
The session musicians employed by Mann have references that read like a who's who among the era's most accomplished artists. David Spinoza, whose credits include stints with Paul McCartney and Paul Simon, gives Allman a break, offering a lead guitar solo on 'Man's Hope'. Ralph McDonald, who supports Bernie Purdie and Al Jackson Jr.'s drums with percussion accompaniment has backed David Bowie and Jimmy Buffett. And Donald 'Duck' Dunn, who earned a space in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an MG for Booker T. Jones, has aksi played behind The Blues Brothers and Neil Young. Chuck Rainey also plays bass, and he has performed with Steely Dan and The Eagles. Allman himself has added his talents to recordings by John Hammond, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, and Aretha Franklin. How's that for name dropping?
The music itself is an homage to sensuality. The album title and photographs accompanying the disc speak to Mann's desire to create a soundtrack for lovemaking. He succeeds to some degree, but rather than coming off as a celebration of sensuality, the album feels more traditionally romantic, especially the ballads 'If' and 'Never Can Say Goodbye'. The title track and 'Man's Hope' are the funkiest songs on the disc, and seem to produce the most inspired and imaginative response in the performers.
I owned the original vinyl version of 'Push Push' while in college, and was also fortunate enough to catch Mann when he made a summer of 1975 appearance at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. It was an unusual show as Mann's back-up band, The Family of Mann, got delayed at the airport, and Mann decided to perform the first set solo. I was only sitting a few rows from the stage, and I'll never forget the mesmerizing performance this Mann put on. I was close enough to be able to hear him keeping time by tapping his foot on the stage, and it was all the rhythm accompaniment he needed. He is truly a master of his instrument.
While 'Push Push' doesn't, in my opinion, capture Herbie Mann at his best, the song selection and musical stylings probably make it his most accessible work. I'm not sure if the disc is remastered, but since it was released in 1989, I'm doubtful. Scanning the disc and inserts fail to reveal whether it is AAD, ADD or DDD. It does say "reissue produced by Bob Porter", which sounds like a remastering. Go figure. Credits and a few comments by Mann are the only other offerings found in the inserts.
