About the Artist
A swing jazz quintet, The Veltones are renewing the music from the 40s & 50s with a fresh sound, and innovative arrangements. Their music undertakes a new direction, yet still reflects the period when they were written and performed. Steve Godzisz, saxophonist/clarinetist, together with Gerry Mancuso, percussionist, a few years ago came together embarking on renewing this style of music and how it was performed. By bringing together a group of talented musicians, Joe Roscetti, Tony Blasting & Dave Silverstein, they are reviving a wonderful era with a new feel. Steve Godzisz has worked for the past 30 years as a studio musician and performer, working with people like the late Rick Frazier, saxophonist and music manager for Wayne Newton. Percussionist Gerry Mancuso has personally known and worked with Gene Kruppa and has performed with greats like Louis Armstrong and Erskine Hawkins adding to the music a sound not heard since they were performed last. Together with David Kane and Steve Godzisz on Production, the CDs digital reproduction give a live yet easy listening approach to music you can't stop tapping your foot to. Let them take you back to the days of the Copa, Apollo, Miami Beach and the Las Vegas strip with their cool jazz sound. Their new CD takes you through a passage in time when cocktails were cool and girls were dolls, and greats like Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, Henry Mancini and Ray Anthony were household names.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2000-01-04

I liked the beats to it, different from what I've heard in the past. They bring out the gospel but not in a cheesy way. I did have one problem with the CD, and that was in the song "Ladylike." I don't understand why a foul word was used in a gospel recording. I was a bit taken aback, but it's still a GREAT CD.

This stuff rocks. These guys switch styles so easily, yet a 'DPL sound' remains. I know of no other band who can do all of this the way Vel and Vinny do ... if you ever thought about mixing up rock / funk / electronic / rap / metal / et al just to see what you get, give these guys a listen, 'cuz they've done it right!

4 out of 5 stars the veltones.......2001-12-15

I thought the album was pretty good but i had a hard time listen-ing to hear the drums in most of the songs. The drummer was ex-
cellent but you cannot hear the drums very good because the sax
player is playing louder over all the other instruments and drow-
ning them out, including the drummer. I'd also like to say that
the sax player throughout the album came up short on alot of the
songs-like he was playing with a "FIRESTONE" saxaphone that had major blowouts with alot of flats. That's my opinion, his notes were flat on most of the tunes. Other than that, the album was a good swing jazz CD.

3 out of 5 stars reissuing my critque.......2001-11-29

Music is a very personal experience. Having reminded Baton Rouge of that idea, let me reitterate that I don't believe that the sax player was very good. I know flat and slow when I here it and that's that. I noticed that my previous review is no longer available.

The percussion, piano, guitar and bass were great! I did not appreciate the quality of the sax. I've been a musician for 47 years and have more than a slight idea of what I like. Some people can't accept a little criticism. How can you be in the public with music and expect someone not to like it? This is my right as an American and a former member of the US Army! Viet Nam wasn't pretty and neither is the sax playing. The album is worth listening to and harkens back to the swing era and therefore is of value. So enjoy and don't pay much attention to the sax!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-05-29

Great CD!! Don't understand the negative review on the CD pertaining to the horn player. He sounds excellent and reminiscent of the time. Maybe, the reveiwer should take some music courses. Obviously, he/she must be deaf as well as musically ignorant. A TRUE JAZZ LOVER.

5 out of 5 stars The Veltones.......2001-04-28

The music is wonderful....takes me back to the old days. I bought one for my father and he listens to it all the time. The music is just great! You could almost hear the famous singers singing. I would highly recommend this CD if you enjoy good music that is done to perfection.
