Editorial Reviews

Scott Yanow, Author of Jazz Books, Sept 2005
"Wendee has a beautiful voice, swings at all tempos, improvises with subtlety and taste, knows how to uplift superior material."

Product Description
While all 15 songs are rewarding, a few of the highpoints are particularly worth mentioning. Wendee's singing, starting with a brief a capella stretch at the beginning of "Blue Skies," is beautiful throughout. "Rainbow Connection" is given new life beyond its connection with Kermit the Frog. Peplowski's solos on "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Blue Moon" especially show off his fluency and creativity. The medley of "My Foolish Heart" and "The Second Time Around" (which has Steve Heck singing the latter) is a surprising success. And "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" was recorded because Wendee loved how Eddie Higgins played Michel Legrand.

not as much as She's So Unusual, but it's still fun to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars True Colors.......2007-05-13

I got this CD for my son who always like Cyndi Lauper and with this CD I also got him concert tickets to see the True Colors Tour. So he was quite pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-07-05

I've been looking for the songs on this cd for a very long time. When I ordered the cd, I never looked at what songs it had on it, I just got it cause I like Cyndi Lauper and the song True Colors. But it had more than just that song, it had even more great songs that I didn't know that Cyndi even sang. The cd is a classic and must have for anyone that loved music from the '80's and is a Cyndi Lauper fan.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Follow up.......2006-04-14

After you heard the greatness of "She's So Unusual" you were tempted to check out its follow up, right? Well as most people were I was also and sampled some songs liked what I heard got the album. Overall the songs are a lot more mature and show a grown up Cyndi Lauper. Don't expect the wacky Cyndi from "SSU" it has a different approch. Here is a track by track run down;

1. Change of Heart 10/10

This track is a great opener for the album it really gets you up and makes you dance. This is Cyndi's finest moment on the album as far as I'm concerned. It's With a drum and guitar that just won't quit. This song makes the album worth it by its self. It was the second single.

2. Maybe He'll Know 8/10

While I wasn't to fond of this track at first listen it definatly grew on me. This is a remake of the track Cyndi did w/ Blue Angel. It has kind of a 50's pop sound. It became a fifth single in Holland only.

3. Boy Blue 9/10

A nice underrated gem of Cyndi's from the album it is mid-tempo and has a warm breezy sound to it. It became the fourth single from the album and Cyndi's first flop single at least in the U.S. peaking at #71.

4. True Colors 7/10

Hard to believe that the title track of the album, a soft and slow song was written by the same writers that wrote Madonna's "Like a Virgin" two years before. Although the song isn't my fav on the album I do have a soft spot for it. It became a #1 hit and the first single off the album.

5. Calm Inside the Storm 9/10

What a cool light-hearted song. It is a fun up-beat track that you can't resist. The chorus is killer and makes the song.

6. What's Going On? 8/10

A remake of the classic Marvin Gaye song, although a lot of people dislike Cyndi's remake and some call it mediocre I do happen to like it quite a bit. Cyndi holds her own and makes it her own. This was the third single from the album.

7. Iko Iko 6/10

This two minute ditty is a African cultured track that you can sing at the campfire. It isn't a stand out but it's alright...

8. The Faraway Nearby 7.5/10

It starts out kind of silly but gets better as it goes on is not half bad.

9. 911 9/10

I really like this one it makes you get in a happy mood and has you singing along. But kind of seems like it's trying too hard to be wild like the She's So Unusual days of Cyndi. Also Pee-Wee Herman has a cameo voice as a 911 operator in the last 10 seconds.

10. One Track Mind 5/10

Definatly a obvious filler track. The title, the idea and the amazing instrumental backround has all the potential in the world but the underwelming vocals and the amazing backround that almost grows repedative ruins the song quite a bit. A weak ending to a good album.

OVERALL AVERAGE SCORE: B-

It went on to become Double-Platinum while not following the monster success to She's So Unusual it is worth being in your collection. It holds its own and is definatly worth a listen and for some a second listen as it has some growers.

4 out of 5 stars "true colors" single is a classic..........2005-10-22

What can I say? I love Cyndi! I like her attitude. This 2nd effort is hers is a little bit off from her 1st album, but I just loved this album for its 2 outstanding tracks: "True Colors" and "Iko Iko"

"Iko Iko", although short, is a nice track to groove with, especially if you're performing the "chicken dance":-P. I just have a problem understanding the lyrics. I wish they would have an English translation of this song.

"True Colors" is simply amazing. It is always important to express and be yourself. Show the "true you". Cyndi delivers it in a whispering and melancholic manner, though. This is an excellent song to be played in dramas and soaps, and it will appeal mostly to emotional people, like me.

Give the CD a try, and be mesmerized with the haunting voice of Cyndi in "True Colors." Excellent CD cover too.

Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19

I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.

5 out of 5 stars For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22

Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.

The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.

There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.

This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."

Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2002-12-29

This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.

Cardiff-based DJ-producer Lincoln Barrett (a.k.a. High Contrast) builds new beats and pieces into the once majestic style known as drum and bass, combining color-saturated technique, warm studio technology, and clever samples for a spectacular two-disc debut. Many producers try to bring a more song-oriented approach to drum and bass, but Barrett pulls a few old-school tricks with a new-school view that beats them all silly. The warp-speed "Make It Tonight" sounds like Mary J. Blige time-stretched and tipsy. "True Colors" fuses bracing math rock with warm R&B sensibilities, while "Passion" combines corny atmospherics with breathy females and smooth-jazz sonics. "Return of Forever" is full-on sleaze funk, with a groove as deep and sweaty as a Brazilian street parade. With his magician's programming skills and dazzling tune sense, Barrett ups the ante for drum and bass wannabes the world over. Disc No. 2 includes alternate mixes and two additional tracks, "Remember When" and "Full Intention." --Ken Micallef

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-05

I once wrote in amazon that Roni Size's "New Form"-album is my all-time favorite DnB-album. Well, that's still true, but High Constrast's "True Colors" has joined this very small club. I think, New Forms was the groundbreaking album of the 90's, but True Colors is the groundbreaking album of the 00's.

At a time when everybody said DnB is dead, High Contrast came out with this album and proofed everybody wrong. Combining influences from Jazz, Funk, House, Dancehall, ambient,... he has created a new sound of DnB which is highly musical, highly artistic, and has revolutionized the whole scene. I actually think that thanks to him and his colleagues at Hospital Records, DnB is fresher and better than ever.

True Colors is very atmospheric, very liquid, very smooth, but at the same time preserves the edge, the roughness and the "underground" feel of a typical DnB-album. You can here it at home, dance to it in a club, or play it at a private party (where everybody will come up to you and ask you for the CD - even those who never had any contact to DnB) or in a lounge.

The album comes as a 2CD set, the first with the full tracks, the second with a mix-version. By now I actually prefer the mix. I have had this CD for a while, but still I listen to it regularly. Its really addictive.

If you like this sound, and you likely will, you should actually buy all High Contrast albums. Also look at the other Hospital-crew members, especially Nu:Tone or, of course, London Elektricity.

5 out of 5 stars High Contrast just keeps getting better.......2005-09-24

True Colours was an undoubtedly ground-breaking album. High Contrast blasted the drum and bass scene with different, rich, innovative samples and melodies. True Colours contained instant classics like "Return to Forever" and "Global Love" but some songs like "Expose" and "Savoir Faire" seemed out of place. True Colours had a strange flow; a bit too diverse to swallow from beginning to end.

It had to be difficult for Barrett to come up with new innovative material. Coming up with a worthy successor to True Colours had to be a real challenge. However High Society not only matches the musical quality of True Colours but excels as a truly amazing drum and bass album. It picks up where True Colours ended and, following its predecessor, contains instant classics. The difference is that High Society has a real flow to it. The song arrangement makes sense from start to finish. This is definitely one of the top ten DNB LPs of this decade. It is remarkable how High Contrast keeps getting better.

5 out of 5 stars Got over my preconceptions of D&B.......2005-06-25

I bought this album over a year ago, and to be honest, it sat in my crate-unplayed-for just about the whole time. I was (and still am to a certain extend) a D&B fan that cringed when I heard any lyrics (except old school ragga toasting). To me, it is all about the beat/bassline. Don't get me wrong, I loved "Return of Forever" right off the bat. I struggled through "Music is Everything" (diva vocals). By the time I got to "True Colors" and its gay (not that there is anything wrong w/ that) filtered disco lyrics, that was the end for me. I recently came across it and decided that maybe my musical vocabulary had expanded and it would sound better the 2nd time around. Holy Sh** was I right. "True Colors" (the track)actually has one of the sickest beats once you get through the first couple minutes of fluff. Once I got to the last track ("Mermaid Scar"), I was hooked. Anyway, the more I listened, the more I saw what all the fuss was about over this record and this artist. This dude really has some serious talent. To make a short story long, I am now a huge High Contrast fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2005-05-13

I spend hours upon hours looking for "this", regardless of the genre. Worth the ~$13 bucks; Return of Forever is unbelieveable. If you like True Colors, most definitely check out High Society, in fact the entire rest of the Hospital crew.

5 out of 5 stars The Souful Side to Drum and Bass, brought by High contrast.......2004-06-22

When I picked up High Contrast's 'True Colors,' I was very skeptical of what I would hear, since I am an active listener to all sorts of Drum and Bass forms. High Contrast seems to take this 'DnB' genre to another level of fast pace breakbeats, into goovin' tunes. His style is very unique and very addictive, I must say. You catch yourself listening to the whole CD over and over and enjoying its Light, Jazzy, Techstep, Intelligent way of mixing drum and bass with modern phrased vocals or the next chord that strikes. Personally, I think High Contrast(Lincoln Barrett) is a creative man in making drum and bass take a 'lighter' note than its fellow competitors(usually 'dark' drum and bass producers). Overall, this album 'True Colors' is one of those cd's that should be in your drum and bass collection of all time. With its soulful and addictive beats, you shouldnt pass up this offer of not buying it, or at least listen to it.

    5 out of 5 stars missing songs.......2000-11-07

I also have a request for "Goonies R' Good Enough", but does anyone remember "I've Got A Whole In My Heart (That Goes All The Way To China)" from the extremely rare Vibes soundtrack? It might be fun to hear the theme song to "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" also. I hope that Cyndi comes out with an even better boxset that includes those songs. This stuff is really good though.

4 out of 5 stars Nice package, but not the required box set.......2000-05-16

Someday there will be a proper box set of Cyndi Lauper material. In the meantime, this "three-fer" will suffice for most listeners. It features the two 80s releases that most of her fans know and love--plus an early 90s recording ("Hat Full of Stars") which deserves to be heard.

And of course, the price is right. But the lack of inclusion of anything from "Night to Remember" is disappointing. The rock-crit establishment has spread the word that Cyndi's third release is a one-star affair. In reality, it's a vocal tour de force, which leaned on the pop side (which I guess in some corners is anathema) but was a perfectly valid step for someone who considered herself first and foremost a singer.

The ideal box set would also pick up some of b-sides of her singles ("Heading for the Moon" would be a must, but also "Cold"), live tracks and yes, of course, "The Goonies." That'd be good enough for me.

    4 out of 5 stars The Goonies???.......1999-02-26

This would be the Cyndi Lauper CD to get if only it included "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough," which is out of print and very hard to find!

    5 out of 5 stars True Talent.......2007-05-28

I consider this cd to be one of my handful of great finds-particularly
when I found it in the discount section of a local cd store;I don't know what somebody was thinkin'.Wendee has the style-and the voice to back it up.And the group knows how to back up a singer, with great soloing by Ken Peplowski on tenor sax and clarinet,Eddie Higgins and Steve Heck on piano,Marshall Wood on bass,Les Harris on drums,Bob Ullman on guitar and Dotti Anita Taylor on flute. My only (personal)negative is I'm just on real big on the title tune itself;I would've called the cd 'True Talent'
or 'Truly Great Stuff' which kicks off with a truly great 'Blue Skies' and keeps kickin'.

    3 out of 5 stars A Let Down.......2006-08-18

I was VERY disappointed with this collection. Sometimes producers should try to "improve" on a good thing. Changing the format changes the desirablity of the product.

    5 out of 5 stars BILLBOARD.......2001-05-01

The ultimate hook of "Stage 3 True Colors" is its earnest belief in a united community among men and women in our community. The use of songs like "Family" from "Dreamgirls" and "I Will Never Leave You," a nearly lost treasure from "Side Show," leaves the listeners hopeful that the ploarization and separation that exists between us can dissolve and be replaced by warmth regarding our commonalities and respect for our differences. - LARRY FLICK

5 out of 5 stars Clearly, it misses the boat.......2001-04-11

This entry in the Stages series from DINK records is very disappointing. The orchestrations are no longer the simple, spare melodies of Stage 1, but full-blown pop pap that drowns the vocalists. The focus has been diffused by the incorporation of female vocalists (still singing same-gender love songs, as the woman singing Paul McCartney's "Michelle") - but don't these folks realize that their fan base is gay men? There are extraordinarily few lesbians in the theatre scene. Furthermore, the theatrical basis of Stage 1 and 2 is lost as various pop songs are included, and less than half the album comes from the Broadway oeuvre.

I'd pass on this album, unless you're a serious collector... and I hope and pray DINK realizes their mistake, if they should decide to issue a Stage 4.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Do It!.......1999-12-16

Why did they bother calling this Stage 3! Much of the selection is not even theatre related! I truly enjoyed earlier recordings in this series, but I think this one is a HUGE mistake. The previous CDs were innovative and exciting - men singing to men - from traditional theatre songs meant for women. These are pop standards we never really cared about and a few theatre songs poorly mixed with men and women. Unlike the previous recordings, many of these do not even seem uniquely gay themed. Buy Stage 1 or Stage 2 (the second one is the best), but don't buy this one!

    1 out of 5 stars If you like Stage 1 & 2 don't bother with 3........1999-09-30

Nothing like Satge 1 or 2. What appeals to me about the first two is the majority of the songs were written for women and performed by men. Stage 3 is more of an adult contempory album. It could be placed with those you buy on the budget rack at your local Fred Meyer.
