Beautiful & Bittersweet! A Can't Miss! .......2007-06-24

I can't believe this is a 'live' recording. I can't believe how great this is. I can't believe how great of a trio this was! If you are a fan of great music, no matter what the genre, and you have semi-decent taste in music, then purchase this one immediately. While you are at it, you might as well purchase "Sunday at the Village Vanguard", the other classic recording by the trio from the same session in June of 1961. Both of these recordings are essential to not just a jazz fan's collection, but any collector of great music.

It is such a shame that LaFaro died tragically ten days after this memorable performance. You don't often hear his name mentioned when you hear people discussing the greatest bass players of all-time. However, after listening to these two albums, there is no denying that his performance was just as great as any other performance by the legendary jazz bassists (i.e. Ray Brown, Jaco, Chambers, Mingus, et al...). It's simply beyond definition! And yes, I am referring to a bass player folks. Only heaven knows how great his career could have been had his life not ended so abruptly.

The splendid, swan-song performance by LaFaro, does in no way overshadow the fine work by Bill Evans himself and drummer Paul Motian. Motian compliments his two pals perfectly with his silky, serene brush strokes and his laid back, unassuming style. While Bill Evans is just, well... Bill Evans. The man was simply a genius. I can listen to him play all night long. This is perfect music to listen and lounge to, or be in a lounge and listen to (of course sipping on some cocktails while you're at it). It is also great music to read to and one of my favorites to play right before I go to sleep at night. It always fills my heart and mind full of harmony and peace.

Bill evans is famous for his melody , his harmony , his tone . His jazz is not depict the technique side , he is just like a poet , he makes the jazz music into the deeper side , and made it more rich. In this live concert , we can really see , just a simple note can moves us .

In memoriam of a poet!.......2006-05-11

Bill Evans constituted the great exponent of the lyrical jazz, expressed in the intimacy of small Halls (as the Blue Note). His inspirational mood and captivating expression created an atmosphere of ineludible seduction.

He was a true poet and remark this epithet in the sense of creator of new possibilities and lyrical hues. His early loss left many unfinished projects as to record a whole session with Oscar Peterson (imagine that dream come true);but at least he left the best of his craft for the posterity.

Waltz for Debby was arguably, his best referential card, a sublime work loaded of exquisite lyricism and sumptuous refinement.
An album to treasure.

Actually Six or Seven Stars or maybe Eight..........2006-02-01

The definition of a piano jazz trio. I'll leave it to people who know what they are talking about to describe the technicalities of the music. For the layperson, this is piano jazz at its best. I can't get enough Evans, but if I had to take one Evans recording to the proverbial desert island...this is it. The title track is, maybe, my favorite piece of music of any sort. It's light, it's buoyant, it's whimsical, it's melancholy, it's playful, it's timeless, it's Bill Evans, Scott Lofaro and Paul Motian making magic. If for some reason you are on the fence about this recording, climb down off the fence, punch the appropriate keys and order this CD.

Monica's best jazz-record!.......2005-05-14

Today the sad message headlined Swedish newspapers. Monica Z died yesterday in a fire-accident. Monica regarded "Walz for Debby" the best album in her career. She was of course right. This record is sublime, magnificent and deeply moving. Monica will always be in our hearts!

On July 18, 1969, Evans took his trio with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell to Italy in order to inaugurate the Pescara festival located on the Adriatic coast. The group was recorded live on eleven tracks that were supposed to be broadcast for radio only. But much to the chagrin of Evans and his manager, the concert was released as limited edition on two Japanese CDs. This release contains Bill Evans' Peccary Festival performance, marking the first time all of these songs are found on one disc. 20-bit remastered. Lonehill. 2004.

But Much to the Chagrin of Evans and his Manager Helen Keane, the Concert was Release on Limited Edition on Two Japanese Cds. This Release Contains Bill Evans' Complete Pescara Festival Performance, Marking the First Time that all of These Songs Are Found on One Disc. Despite the Pianist's Indignation Over the Recordings, the Music Performed that Night was of Excellent Quality and We Are Extremely Lucky to have It.

Officially released bootleg? .......2005-01-10

It started out okay (maybe 3.5 stars), only to find the sound quality deteriorates gradually (ends with 1 star). The last and Bill's best tune Waltz for Debby is almost inaudible and doesn't even start from the very beginning. I also noticed that, as if to escape from getting caught, the microphone was moving toward the end of this CD, and the sound gets "shaded." This may suggest that this was an armature bootleg live recording. Unless you are a collector or Bill Evans freak, you'd be better off avoiding this CD, simply because it's not worth the money.
There are much better recordings of similar tunes and periods available, such as Quiet Now and Serenity from Charly Records.

Thrilling.......2004-12-22

Until now, I thought that the Riverside recordings of the early 1960s were absolutely canonical. Nothing could challenge them for clarity, intention, creativity, and just plain genius. I came on them in college about 40 years ago and they still knock me out every time I put them on the turntable or in the CD. I thought they were unique in that the three players sounded as if they were driven by one heart. Evans lost that quality for a long time after Scott La Faro died, but he found it again in the last trio with Mark Johnson and Pete La Barbera.

Well folks, I am just thrilled to say that this new release of a set from 1969 is way up in the Evans canon. Although I liked Eddie Gomez a lot when I heard him in the late 1960s, he never sounded quite this joyous and balletic to me, just so happy to be there. And Marty Morrell was every bit the perfect counterpart.

The set. It has an up version of Round Midnight which is counter-intuitive, I know, but this is Bill Evans. I must admit I listened for Scott La Faro during the Autumn Leaves. However, I will tell you that the versions of Nardis and Quiet Now are for the ages. I can't say enough about this disk. Get your hands on it as soon as you can and listen a million times. It won't wear out. I promise.

Incredible CD Layer.......2006-12-14

These Analogue Productions hybrid SACD's have incredible CD layers,and they are the best sounding CD's in my large collection. I wish Doug Sax remastered everything that I've ever purchased - jazz, blues, or rock. If you happen to like CCR, listen to what Analogue Productions did with their catalog. They were remastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, who also happen to be ace mastering guru's.

THE piano trio cd, remastered (yet again!).......2002-07-05

I thought the latest re-master of this album and the companion set, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, was good. This one really tops them both, and I hope they re-release Sunday soon. This is my 4th copy of this album, including the lp version. One note I'd like to make, though, is that the group the Bill Evans Trio opened up for that day was not a "choral group" or whatever the reviewer said below, but indeed the Trio opened for Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, one of the most unique and talented vocal groups in all of music. In 1961, they were a hot ticket in the jazz world, and it was very good for the Trio to place on the bill opposite L,H, & R because it was a great way to expose a wider audience to their music. Whatever may have been the case, this is an essential buy for Evanophiles and anyone who likes to revel in beautiful sounds.

Truly Superior Sound Quality.......2002-06-24

This SACD version offers considerably improved sound quality over any CD remastered versions (K-2, etc). The hiss you hear from CD and LP is virtually gone. This gives listeners greater clarity and depth in sound. Unfortunately, this makes the background noise of the audience with their chats, laughs and silverware more noticeable. This could be disturbing to seriously devoted Bill Evans fans, although Paul Motian, the only living member of the trio, has recently mentioned in the Swing Journal's interview that the chatty audience never bothered the trio in those days. DSD technology, which SACD is based, has ehabled us to get closer to the real thing beyond any level achived by CD technology. Considering the fact that the information captured in the original master tape 41 years ago is well within the CD specifications, it is a wonder that DSD technology can bring even greater sound quality. Paul Motian testifies that the trio's earlier performances during their two-week engagement was better than what was played on that last Sunday. If I had a time machine, I would go back with the latest DSD recording equipment and record the superior perforamnce of the previous Sunday. Can you imagine that Bill Evans Trio was only the warm up band for a chorus group that Sunday afternoon?

i LOVE this collection.

in fact, i'd got so far as to say i can't go very long without listening to it. the music is amazing..

the crying shame of it IS-- the piano is SO distorted in transients, that i can't listen to it without cringing. it's so clear and great on bass and drums.. you feel immersed in the space. but... bill evans' piano is farting out in so many places.. it's really sorta atrocious. i thought there was something wrong with my system-- literally. but it's the discs..

i really don't know if it's the masters, or the mastering.. but sadly.. either way.. it kinda bombs. if you listen in the car or as a background.. this is a fantastic set. if you REALLY sit and listen.. i'm really sad to say, this ain't your collection!

The prettiest album I've ever owned.......2006-02-26

I'm not an afficionado, or an expert, or a wonk. I'm just a novice who put this album on my wish list for Christmas because I'd bought "Everyone Digs Bill Evans" on an impulse (and that was a lucky impulse!). When I received it as a gift and put it on the CD player, I was charmed, because I didn't expect the clear, yet intimate, precise, yet romantic music that poured out. If you're looking for music for quiet days, or if you need to gamble on buying a good gift for someone who appreciates sweet music, or if you're just feeling your way, like me, and think you'd like to have more piano jazz in your life, try this; it is rapidly becoming my favorite CD. It's not the one you'll jump around to or get the dishes done to - - try Saxophone Colossus for that - - but it is the one you'll read a book to, and fantasize about moving to Paris. Enjoy.

Hideous.......2005-10-28

This is by far the most distorted piano I've ever encountered on a jazz recording. Nothing else comes close. The bass solos are consistently accompanied by a high-pitched clicking sound. I've never heard the original vinyl disc or the earlier CD version, but I'd be extremely surprised if they were anywhere near this bad. I'd really like my money back.

Bill Evans will always be one of the most sublime exponents of the jazz understood and conceived as the supreme improvisation art. Evans `s sensibility and phrasing is absolutely evident in every little bar his velvet fingers played. He had as the most of the creators, the right approach, the sense of rapture, the discrete enchantment and the spelling atmosphere to show the core of every work.
All his works through his career reveal that notable characteristic so typical of the poet man: the non exhausted capacity to re invent himself constantly: innovation is transformation.
So in these terms his craft will survive generations and generations because it is based on convictions and inner values that have nothing to do with material issues.
This historical record will be an unvaluable testimony for the future listeners about the trascendence and importance of this colossal musician.

I would rank this as one of the best jazz records, along with Kind of Blue, Giant Steps, and A Blowing Session. Sublime, but Evans' playing keeps it all together due to his ability to convey different emotions through the piano keys. The gold disc version by Analogue Productions is clearly better than the standard OJC version, and also better than the JVC K2 version. However, the K2 is very good for the money and superior to the OJC version. Listening to the gold disc on a good system, you can really hear the microdetails of the piano and symbols, while the overall sound is smooth and full bodied.
