Florida-born alto saxophonist Julian Cannonball Adderley distinguished himself as a member of Miles Davis's groups (he's the sultry alto on Kind of Blue) and with the hard-bop ensembles he co-led with his cornet-playing brother Nat. This recording, produced by Orrin Keepnews in 1963 for the Riverside label, features Adderley performing bossa nova-based compositions. Anchored by Brazilian composer and pianist Sergio Mendes's band (with alto saxophonist Paulo Moura), Adderley's singing sax lines float over the sunny Rio rhythms, owing more to Benny Carter than Charlie Parker. The renditions of Antonio Carlos Jobim's standards "Corcovado" and "Once I Loved" and Joao Donato's "Minha Saudades" are comparable to Stan Getz's Legendary records from the same period, showing anew that jazz and South American music have learned much from each other. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Album Description

This 1962 project marked the American recording debut of Brazilian masters Sergio Mendes and Dom Um Romao in a program of great jazz-inflected sambas by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato and others. Includes two alternate takes.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary addition to any Jazz collection.......2007-05-01

Marcelo Maciel has summed up all the details below, and this album really fits in very well with any general music collection. I actually like this Brazilian album more than any other of Cannonball Adderley's I've heard, and thankfully it ages like good wine and just gets better with time. Be sure not to get the 2006 Limited Edition for $23.99 though, the extra 14 dollars only ensures that you don't get the 2 bonus tracks (the alternate take of Corcovado and the single version of clouds). I can't see many copies of that one being sold.

This is quintessential Bossa Nova... and the best thing is that I'm learning so much just reading the other reviews here.... I love Bossa Nova... it's my favorite Latin music and my favorite Jazz music....

5 out of 5 stars A nice surprise.......2003-05-03

I've always been a fan of Cannonball's standard jazz work (esp. with Miles Davis), so I was delighted to hear about this CD. I'm also a fan of Sergio Mendes who plays piano on this CD. The first cut is very carefree and makes me feel as if I'm walking along the sandy beaches of Brazil. A wonderful intro to Sergio Mendes. It's a good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Cannonball's Bossa Nova -corrected.......2001-12-28

The Jazz-Samba genre, very expressive in the 60's, was inauurated, in Brazil, by Meirelles and the Copa 5 group, in the famous record with Luiz Carlos Vinhas and Pedro Paulo (piano and trumpet). In United States, the genre came in 1962 with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd with the excellent "Jazz Samba", in which some brazilian music's pearls are explored with the sophistication of the guitar-tenor saxophone combination. The Getz's soft tone sound and the Byrd's complex and melodic improvisations contributed to this. It is irrefutable that the peak of this brazilian music fashion in USA came in 1963, with "Getz/Gilberto", in which the samba's broken rithmys, that was a non-solved problem in Jazz Samba, are well managed by Milton Banana.
Following this line, "Cannonball's Bossa Nova" record brings a experienced drummer, Dom Um Romão, who also is present in the Sinatra/ Tom Jobim record. This secure rhytmic support is noticed too in the Durval Ferreira's accompaniment, simple and, so, beatiful. With Sergio Mendes, about his short solos, we have a paralell in the minimalistic improvisation of Jobim. This cool touch it's well perceived in Jobim's solos in the music "O Grande Amor" (Getz/Gilberto) and in the record "The Composer of Desafinado Plays" (1963), in which, almost always, only the right hand is used. Cannonball, a high quality saxophonist, complete the group. His perfect technique allows the full exploration of his musical ideas. His extrem softness and potent sonority (remembers Getz sometimes) and his bebop/bluesy musical speech, Charlie Parker's heritage, are perfect not to a bossa nova record, but for a jazz/bossa approach.
The entire record gets a fine taste, but "Amor em Paz (Once I Loved)", lovely Jobim's melody, shows the great artist who is Cannonball Adderley. Not in his "soul music" incursions, but in his great and pungent lyrical sense that he gives to the ballads ("Stars Fell in Alabama", in the "C.A Quintet in Chicago", 1959, is my preferred). It is almost irresistible to compare Corcovado (Quiet Nights) in this record with Getz/Gilberto record, but both are great, each one with his qualities. For the jazz lovers and for the brazilian music lovers this record is, farther indispensable, a great joy, a great example of good music, a... so, listen it!!! ASAP!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-05-04

From the time i received this CD, it had never left my CD player and had been listening to it over end over again. I don't speak Portuguese, but have been listening to it for a long time now. Gal has widened my appreciation of Brazilian music, samba and bossa nova. This CD is highly recommended. Muito obrigado!!!

4 out of 5 stars Unspectacular, but very nice - -.......2007-04-06

(should have had Kristan, her official translator on hand; only kidding)- she handled the conversation pretty well, actually - - - sure didn't sound like a 61 year old woman; doesn't look her age either. Four superb back-up musicians -- some wiggy guitar changes snuck-in there, good bass and subtle percussion. Gal Costa sounded fine, and it's simply a nice addition to my collection - - - one I'll play on our boat while cruising in the Gulf, or out by the pool until we're able to return to beautiful Rio next year.

4 out of 5 stars FOR EXPORT.......2007-03-08

It was a great pleasure to find a so high quality live recording, much better than anyone could expect. Recorded in Tokio, with special setlist and made specially for exportation and overseas countries, whoever appreciates Brazilian music with the best musical arrangements could have been performed, will enjoy and ask for ENCORE!

5 out of 5 stars Gal is in your Livingroom.......2006-10-02

Awesome! She says, " Ifeel Like I'm in your Livingroom". She truly is in this small acoustical environement. Her voice never fails her; but I was surprised at how low her conversational voce was for a Diva, that can outdo anyone in vocal range. Obrigada, GAl. So if you want the brazilian classic bossa nova/samba jazz created by the masters; Jobim,de Moraes, et.,only Gal can muster that feat vocally.

5 out of 5 stars BEFORE BOSSA NOVA.......2006-10-06

BEFORE THERE WAS JOBIM, GILBERTO, OR GETZ, THERE WAS THIS MUSIC, WHICH WOULD LATER BE COINED BOSSA NOVA MUSIC. RECORDED IN 1953, THIS RECORDING WAS AT LEAST TEN YEARS AHEAD OF ITS' TIME. GREAT ALBUM, IF YOU LIKE THIS YOU HAVE TO GET VOLUME TWO AS WELL.

5 out of 5 stars Not only musicly great but also a historic recording.......2005-01-07

As the other reviewer says, this is an awesome recording. Whats worth noting also is that this is also probably the first bossa nova recording ever done (or at least a recording of brasilian songs that most closely match bossa nova and what it will be). These were recorded long before (7 years or so) Jobim and Joa gilberto recorded and 10 years before the great getz/gilberto recording wich started the bossa nova craze. Truly great for bossa nova or brazil music collectors.

5 out of 5 stars After 55 years I'm still dazzled by this album.......2000-09-27

My very first Bossa Nova album, I bought this while in high school on 10-inch LPs. Effervescent, light, joyous, romantic -- everything you dream Rio de Janeiro could be. It's more of a precursor to the Antonio Carlos Jobim Bossa Nova explosion a few years later. But Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida picked up on the potential for fusing jazz and the samba early on. I'm not a musician, but I know this album is pure genius. The soft sax and vibrant guitar will dazzle you. The interwoven rhythms of sax, guitar and drums go on and on. My favorite track is "Stairway to the Stars." Still gets me dreaming. They tried to follow up with a second album -- Braziliance II -- but it never achieved that spark of divine fire the first one did.

American audiences will embrace Henri Salvador like he's a Grandpa Moses of bossa nova. It's not every day that an eightysomething crooner steps out of U.S. obscurity with an album of warm-as-fresh-pastry cabaret music. Of course, Salvador is no Henri-come-lately. He's famous in France and francophone former colonies (like his native Cayenne, French Guiana) and has decades of television and recording work to his credit. Now, it's time for stateside listeners to play catch-up. This album was reportedly recorded on the verge of Salvador's retirement, and though the sound is classique, many of the songs are of recent vintage. Salvador's charming, half-spoken vocals will resound with listeners familiar with the suave stylings of cabaret practitioners such as Charles Trenet and Walter Hyatt. There's also a bit of Danny Kaye in his phrasing on the album's lighter fare, like the brass-band-flavored "Mademoiselle"--no surprise given Salvador's extensive comedic résumé. Younger audiences primed by the ironic, sophisticated grooves of Dimitiri from Paris and Money Mark will delight in much of the instrumentation here. The album is, in fact, a triumph of production and arranging. Full orchestras are cued, at times, at the same volume as a single instrument, reduced to the level of pure atmosphere. One track, "Il fait Dimanche," has a funky vamp that demands to be sampled for the contemporary dance floor. Another, "Faire des ronds dans l'eau," subsists on strummed guitar and a trap set, with the occasional gypsy-style, savory violin part added for spice. Throughout, Salvador presents himself as an astute, sympathetic performer. On "Je sais que tu sais" it's hard to tell where his whispered voice ends and the drummer's light brushes begin. Apparently, swingers--in the jazz sense of the word--get better with age. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL!!.......2007-06-24

If you want music for a sultry day when you're sitting at a table under the sun with great company and just want to enjoy the moment with a jazzy background sound... this is for you! Think "sitting in the shade under an umbrella on a sunny afternoon at a little table on the sidewalk outside a corner cafe...."
ENJOY!
What an excellent voice ... really really great sounds!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Jazz Performer.......2006-04-08

I bought this CD at the year of 2002 then had a period (3-4 yrs) didn't listen it. It's still being very nice when I took it out for listen today.

5 out of 5 stars A surprising but amazing contribution from Salvador.......2004-02-15

So many artists (and voices) get threadbare with age. Only a few are lucky enough to find a way to keep some of their old color or adapt with the times. Even more rare is the artist who, after a career of decent (but rarely great) output, produces a stunner. That is the case with "Chambre Avec Vue."

I know there are Salvador stalwarts out there who will protest my characterization of Henri as being generally just OK, and I agree he released several standout songs throughout his long career. But those standouts are watered down by so many recordings that are "just a bit too." Just a bit too sentimental. Just a bit too comical. Or just a bit too out-of-genre for Henri to carry. Salvador's early background in cabaret, his affection for a variety of musical styles, and his associations with a wide range of musical greats (everyone from Django Reinhardt to Quincy Jones) have resulted in an impressive (and no doubt enjoyable) but flawed career.

With "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador has taken the best of what he does well and has improved on it by performing with more wisdom than whimsy, more expertise than experimentation, and more authentic sentiment than unselfconscious sappiness. I agree with another reviewer that the influence of Benjamin Biolay (who has been associated with a few really great albums lately) cannot be underestimated on this album. But regardless of who you think deserves the credit, this is truly an album for those who like nuanced, toasted jazz vocals. Yes, it's all in French, and the album is packed with more international influences (notably bossa nova) than the average jazz vocal album. But on "Chambre Avec Vue," Salvador sounds as relaxed as Bing Crosby, as seasoned as recent Tony Bennett, and as melancholy as Chet Baker. That adds up to a surprising and welcome addition to the Salvador oeuvre.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing rebirth.......2004-02-08

This album is an amazing comeback for Henri Salvador. It was co-writen and produced by Benjamin Biolay. There is a whole web of work spinning out from Biolay from his work co-writing and orchastrating Karen Ann (think French Joni Mitchell or modern Francoiz Hardy) to his collaboration on his sister, Coralie Clement's album. Not to be ignored however is his solo work, Rose Kennedy and the amazing Negatif. If you dig the sounds on this album and you have the cash pick up Jet Sounds by Nicola Conte...

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2002-04-29

This is indeed an exquisite album--evoking the romance of Europe and France in particular, wonderful street cafes, jazzy nightspots...humorous, romantic, at times even beautiful, ideal cocktail party or late night music...EXCEPT for the very first track, which sticks out like a sore thumb, with an obnoxious "jazz" harmony vocal out of character with the rest of the disc and which, simply put, just grates. If you can stomach that one, the rest is pure bliss. I burned the CD to another disc, deleting the first track, and I've been in heaven ever since.

this two part album is indeed a prelude of better things to come: bossa nova came to existence a few years later, from this magificent album one can almost hear Jobim and it is not a stretch to say that he (Jobim) is the intellectual heir of Almeida and Bud Shank. A must posession for all samba and bossa nova fans out there.

Ana, in partnership with Chesky Records, has been charming us for better than 15 years now, and this is one of her best. With a couple of exceptions, these are not songs you already know; this is Latin Jazz, done to perfection. A captivating voice, a mixture of English and Portugese in a combination that always seems just right, and great instrumental back-up; that makes a Winner, with a capital W.

Once again, Chesky does it right. Then again, they do everything right; Bach to Bossa Nova, all perfect. A pretty girl, who sings wonderfully, great music, and the very finest in recorded sound. Nuff said.

While Ana Caram will be compared to the great Astrud Gilberto, she has an even mellower approach and somewhat smoother delivery which is so perfectly suited to the sounds of this music. If you enjoy Bossa Nova, you will surely want to add this to your collection! She's a gem!

5 out of 5 stars Blue Bossa Is A Delight.......2002-09-29

Ana Caram's vocals bear an eeire remsemblance to 60s Brazilian superstar Astrid Gilberto, but I can't hold that against her. Ana's plaintive whispering vocals are well suited to David Chesky's sparse production values. This CD is retrograde in the sense that it revisits the wonderful 60's fusion of samba and cool jazz. Now, at last, I can take my classic Getz/Gilberto CD off the turntable and replace it with the swaying samba of this talented artist. I have a feeling this one's going to stay on my turntable a long, long time. Hats off to Chesky Records for bringing us another treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth voice, cool bossa.......2002-01-17

I bought this after listening to a few tracks at a music shop. I'm not heavily into Brazilian, but love Latin. Though I haven't heard of Ana Caram before, her voice and guitar blended superbly.

Well made bossa nova!

Product Description

Téka uses the term New Bossa to describe her music. Sophisticated as bossa nova and yet incorporating a more contemporary taste to it in her own unique way; a mix of undulating bossa nova and American jazz. Her music has become an interesting combination of the sensual rhythms of Brazil and jazz.

Her voice is warm and beautiful.
Her guitar playing is amazing, what a steady groove!
She is not comercial.
She is an ARTIST!

5 out of 5 stars ~~~~ WOW, Muito Bem ~~~~~.......2005-06-20

Wow, this is a great find.
I don't know why Teka has not gotten any more marketing; her style, her way of interpreting, her rendition to other jewels are just absolutely awesome, and many people would benefit tremendously with this piece of art; I don't think any serious Brazilian Jazz collection is complete without Teka's album.
I love it.

5 out of 5 stars When you really need Brazilian..........2002-11-27

You know the feeling when you do...when nothing else can help you make sense of a world clearly going to hell in a handbasket. Ah, but Teka...listen to this album by Teka. Just spend an hour or so with this exquisite Brazilian enchantress, and by the time you get to her cover of that Paul Winter/Ivan Lins new age workhorse, "Common Ground," maybe, just maybe, you might give the world another chance. This is beyond mere music for your jaded self...this gets at the soul, reveals it even. Plus, it swings 'til next week.

5 out of 5 stars Demonstration of versatility and virtuosity.......2007-06-26

Jazz duo albums take many forms, and the combination of a guitar and a horn works well with the right players. A good example is "Send In the Clowns" with Zoot Sims on tenor sax and Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar. Pizzarelli is the guitarist on this album as well, accompanying Eddie Daniels as he switches between clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, and alto flute. As a collector of Eddie Daniels recordings, and a long-time player of clarinet and flute, I find this album to be an amazing and inspirational demonstration of the versatility and virtuosity that Eddie had already achieved early in his career. His fabulous flute playing makes the listener wonder why we didn't hear a lot more recordings dedicated to this instrument throughout his career since this 1973 release. One could say the same about his bass clarinet playing.
Four of the 14 tracks here are classical adaptations rather than jazz, and there are two tracks that are alternate takes. For those who are less interested in Eddie's ability to cross over to classical, or those who are not content with an entire album in a duo format, this CD should still rate four stars. For those like me who want to sample Eddie's brilliance in all its guises, this is a five-star gem.

3 out of 5 stars Blue Bossa.......2006-12-16

This is a duo CD there are no bass and drums.good playing and good tunes but if you don't already own 4 or 5 Eddie Daniels CD's this isn't the one for you.

Product Description

Marco Figueiras Brazilliance spotlights his unique and intimate voice, blending originals and Brazilian jazz standards with lots of love. Brazilliance, the first recording by Marcos for Blue Toucan Music, is the result of that serendipitous meeting of musical minds. On it, we are treated to mellow yet swinging vocals by Marcos, backed by the elegant guitar of Paulo André and a dream team rhythm section of Hélio Alves (piano), Paulo Braga (drums), and Sergio Brandão (bass). Paulo André also provided the impeccable arrangements for all twelve of the tracks on this CD, four of which are brought to even greater heights by the sumptuous string arrangements of the renowned Eumir Deodato. As if these musical riches were not enough, the album is graced by the guest appearances of some of the finest soloists in Brazilian and American jazz: Claudio Roditi (trumpet), Hendrik Meurkens (harmonica) and Hiram Bullock (guitar). The musical roster is further enhanced by the tasteful percussion work of Mauro Refosco, and the sleek backing vocals of Kerry Linder and Luiz Simas.

5 out of 5 stars 'You can take the man out of Brazil but you can't take Brazil out of the man!'.......2007-02-14

Marco Figueria is simply one of the finest musical exports from the land of Bossa Nova. Born in Carangola, Brazil, Figueroa moved to the jazz oriented community of New York in 1988 and since that time he has become a staple on the scene. His musical compositions and singing and guitar artistry fill this very satisfying CD, a fine collection of twelve songs which in addition to the five written by Figueria also share space with works by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rosa Passos, Joao Bosco, Lenine and others.

Figueria's singing style is sultry and he sings in his native Portuguese, able to allow the American jazz version of scat singing resound in his warmly sensuous Portuguese syllables. The ensemble that backs him includes Hello Alves, a very fine pianist, the usual percussion, strings, brass and woodwinds in as acute a balance as a group can attain. On some of the works he invites Kerry Linder and Luiz Simas to join him on vocals.

This is a winsome mix of jazz and Brazilian sounds and sensibilities and is one of the more consistently 'listenable' albums to appear in a long time. Definitely recommended for those with an affinity for Brazilian moods. Grady Harp, February 07

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BRAZILIAN ALBUM.......2005-04-01

Marco is a "new" star in the fantastic realm of Brazilian Music.
His songwriting is so fresh and with a sofisticated level of taste.
His interpretations are very good, reminding us at times of people from Joao Gilberto to Marcio Faraco whith compositions of his own as well as of Milton Nascimento, Joao Bosco, Rosa Passos, Tom Jobim, Roberto Menescal etc. etc.
His interpretations of Bossa Nova (Corcovado, O Barquinho & Aguas de Marco)have a great taste of Jazz, making them super attractive.
Also something that caught my eyes was the fantastic list of guests:
Claudio Roditi / Trumpet
Hendrick Meurkens / Harmonica
Paulo Braga / Drums
Helio Alves / Piano
Paulo Andre Tavares / Guitars
Eumir Deodato / String Arrangements
and many more.............
This is a great CD that will become a classic soon, so get it
while you can; you'll be glad you did !!!!!!!!!
