Before this album was released in 1976, George Benson was known largely for his Wes Montgomery/Charlie Christian-inspired licks and his stints with Jack McDuff and Miles Davis. Breezin' was a million-selling, Grammy Award-winning LP and made Benson an "overnight" star. The reasons for that success were Tommy LiPuma's topnotch production, Claus Ogerman's ethereal arrangements, and Benson's soulful vocals on Leon Russell's ballad "This Masquerade." Backed by Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason, master percussionist Ralph MacDonald, bassist Stanley Banks, rhythm guitarist Phil Upchurch, and keyboardists Ronnie Scott and Jorge Dalto, Benson and the crew laid down the moods and grooves we now call "contemporary jazz." From the soft-rock of "Six to Four," the midtempo backbeat of the title track, and the Latin-tinged tunes "Affirmation," "So This Is Love?" and "Lady," Benson's fleet-fingered Ibanez guitar lines make the rare leap from straight-ahead to the mainstream. Added to the CD reissue are three bonus tracks not on the LP: a snappy and soulful rendition of "Down Here on the Ground," from the movie Cool Hand Luke, a Bob James-like funk number "Shark Bite," and the single-edit version of "This Masquerade." George Benson was never the same after this record and neither was jazz. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Benson is Benson at his best, arguably.......2007-02-10

This is still one of my favourite George Benson CDs. He won a 'Record of the Year' Grammy in 1976 for "This Masquerade" and rightly so. It's a fantastic vocal performance and the only vocal performance on this record.

He also won a 'Best Pop Instrumental Performance' Grammy that same year for "Breezin'" and this was the song I remember being all over the radio back then. But the guitar work on that particular song is nothing compared to what he throws down on the excellent (and proper jazz) songs, "Affirmation" and "So This Is Love?"

But those two are just my favourites. All six tunes are great and this is another of those CDs I put on repeat anytime I play it. One listen is very rarely ever enough. Great production by the celebrated Tommy LiPuma with the orchestra arranged and conducted by the equally legendary Claus Ogerman. It rarely gets any better.

If war or flooding (or something equally disastrous) was on its way and I had the opportunity to take 100 CDs from my collection before I fled, this would definitely be one of them.

4 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE SMOOTH JAZZ WITH THAT FUNKY FLAVOR.......2007-01-31

when i heard this album, i was expecting a mellow but funky ride. instead, i got confusion. then i listened to it again, and i got even more confused. i think that is how i listen to this album best..........confused. nevertheless, it is still a pretty nice outing by george benson. this what i call "headphone album". for me, this sounds better with headphones on.

5 out of 5 stars Breezin' Is Pleezin'.......2006-08-12

I have been listening to Breezin' since it was first released on vinyl. There is no higher smooth jazz experience available at any price. Mr. Benson is on the smooth jazz pedistal of my musical life.

5 out of 5 stars Vacation-in-a-disc.......2006-04-06

This is the ultimate CD for relaxed, easy listening wherever you are whether surfing the web, doing chores or driving. Every track is pure gold but "BREEZIN'", "DOWN HERE ON THE GROUND" and "THIS MASQUERADE" showcase Benson's guitar magic to perfection. It's an instant Caribbean-vacation-in-a-disc, something you can listen to over and over again and never tire of its crisply-recorded perfection. Once you start playing it you'll never want to leave the beach and go home.

4 out of 5 stars The Birth of Smooth Jazz Started Here..........2006-02-21

...and hasn't stopped since. There may have been other artists who broke ground first, but none of them kick-started the genre like "Breezin'" did. This landmark album not only gave birth to a new form of jazz, it made jazz a commodity. Much to the chagrin of purists. But whether they like it or not, it's here and it started here.

You can love George for his smooth, sometimes BB-King-style phrasing or you can hate him for taking the art out of jazz. But either way you cannot argue his command of the solo. No one understands the power of the solo better and it shows on this album and in all of his recordings. Quite simply put, he's my generation's version of Wes Montgomery (at least in my opinion).

Besides "This Masquerade" and the title track, "Lady" is an all-around well-crafted jazz song with pop stylings. He works well with the string orchestra--as he does in the other compositions on this album--and he never strays beyond what is needed.

But George's ride doesn't stop with this album...his next one "In Flight" continues the rise of smooth jazz (or the fall of jazz as art, some might say). And then of course "Weekend in LA" knocked the walls of jazz commercialism down to the ground.

Call it what you want, but this is nothing short of a breakthrough, pioneering effort by one of the best guitarists of the last half of the 20th century.

2 out of 5 stars Sounds like original recording.......2006-11-02

I had hoped that the recording on CD would have been cd quality. Instead it sounds as if they took the original recording and placed it on the cd. Could stand a little remixing to enhance the quality of the sound.

Don't get me wrong the music is great, just difficult to hear clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Baker's "Sugar Baby" Shine Still Pleases.......1999-02-15

No one evoked "Sugar Baby" sexuality better than Josephine Baker. The mystique of her french lyrics carries over well in this collection of songs in english. From "What Do I Say (After I Say I'm Sorry)" to "Bye Bye Blackbird", her giddy interpretations deliver classic American lyrics with a sly sensuality unduplicated by any other performer, ex-patriate or otherwise.

Anyone who enjoys the naive style of the popular music of her era will certainly enjoy this recording. Be aware that the sound quality is consistent with the original recordings--if you enjoy listening to 78s, you will find the sound to be handsomely nostalgic.

5 out of 5 stars My introduction to "Smooooothe Jazz".......2007-02-11

I clearly remember becoming aware of George Benson, on Saturday night in the Summer of 1976. I had managed to ask a beautiful, Post Grad coed form BYU to dance, and trying to sound sophisticated I remarked "Stevie Wonder has such a great voice" Those beautiful brown eyes looked into mine and she replied "That's not Stevie Wonder".

Although I felt foolish, my lovely dance partner, educated me about George Benson, the next Monday I bought "Breezin" and have been a fan of George Benson and Smooth Jazz ever since.

At the time I remember, at the beginning of my Jazz education that this album was controversial, in the world of jazz, because Mr. Benson was told he couldn't sing on the album, because jazz fans would not accept him as a serious musician if he did. Lucky for the world that he sang anyway and we have had over thirty years of not only his unbelievable skills on the guitar, but one of the most full beautiful voices of any male singer ever recorded.

A must have album for fans of Smooth Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Breeze.......2001-11-29

George Benson's Breezin' was a landmark album in jazz music. It introduced a style of jazz that was inflected with r&b stylings that made it appealing to a mass audience who necessarily didn't like the genre. The album hit number one on the Top 200 & r&b charts and stayed at number one on the jazz charts for over a year. The album was spurred on by Mr. Benson's smooth and elegant cover of "This Masquerade" which peaked at number 10 and went on to win the 1976 Grammy for Record of the Year. But in addition to that great track, the album had five other gems including the appropriately titled title track which has a light, airy Latin vibe, the straight jazz of "Six To Four" and the sophistication of "Lady". The remastered version contains three additional tracks including a great song, "Shark Bite" and the single edit of "This Masquerade" which palls in comparison to the full length version.

1 out of 5 stars Soporific effort from a master guitarist.......2001-08-12

George Benson's efforts on CTI had a distinct commercial accessibility yet had room for his masterful guitar playing. "Bad Benson" which immediately preceded this, was an example of such an album. There the production values sometimes impeded, George somehow came through in full force with muscular guitar lines. During his tenure with CTI he turned out some outstanding recordings "Beyond the Blue Horizon", "Body Talk" etc. He turned out some bad ones "White Rabbit", "Good King Bad" but he at least took chances.

Then came this very bland passive album where George was a mere shadow of himself. Claus Ogerman's arrangement immersed him in syrup. The highpoint of this recording is the late Jorge Dalto's playing on an otherwise ordinary pop tune.

Where was the young lion? Where were the strong lines? Where was the drive?

I know, I know, he sold a huge number of copies.

Soon joined the ranks of brilliant instrumentalists who became singers but whose vocals never matched their instrumental virtuosity.

5 out of 5 stars 25 years young and still timeless!!!.......2001-01-17

Just in time for the 25th anniversary of it's original release comes this excellent reissue of George Benson's classic breakthrough album "Breezin'". All this time later the ability for this album to bring a smile to my face and have me playing air guitar along with it hasn't diminished at all. The six tracks on "Breezin'" are GB at his best and feature great support from the likes of Ronnie Foster, Phil Upchurch, Harvey Mason, Jorge Dalto, Stanley Banks, and beautiful, supportive string arrangements from Claus Ogerman. This reissue also features three bonus tracks that were not apart of the original album, a studio version of "Down Here On The Ground", which a live version turned up on 1978's "Weekend In LA", a funky instrumental called "Shark Bite" which was released as the B-side of George's 1985 single "20/20", and the single edit of "This Masquerade" is included. A terrific sounding remaster that displays none of the muddy flatness of the original CD issue and insightful liner notes written by Urban Network journalist A. Scott Galloway make this classic album everything it should be on CD. Nice job Rhino!!!! All I can say now is the rest of his Warner Bros. catalog should get this treatment. IT DESERVES IT!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice treat from Four Lads.......2001-03-20

This is a delightful double CD package with an excellent selection of songs from the Four Lads. (Note the above song selection is not what appears on the album.) In fact there are 24 selections in all, including such standards as Sentimental Journey, Dancing in the Dark, Taking A Chance on Love and The Way You Look Tonight. The first album in this twofer features heavily orchestrated arrangements by Ray Ellis. It's upbeat and bouncy. The second album, under orchestrations by Claude Thornhill, is also first-rate.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs By A Great Group!.......2001-02-01

This Collectables CD combines two former Four Lads albums, "On The Sunny Side" and "Breezin' Along", and contains some really great standards as their titles suggest along with dynamite sound, great arrangements, and of course The Four Lads singing at their best. A generous disc with 24 tracks and about 66 minutes playing time, each song is a gem. If you like the music of Sammy Fain, Harry Warren, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, etc., you can't help but love this CD. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous vocal harmonies!.......2003-11-16

As a collector of vintage 78 rpm records, I've always kept an eye out for sides by the "Revelers" on the famous Victor "scroll" label. Through the years, I accumulated perhaps a dozen records by this fine group, and every one of them is a gem. The Revelers were a group composed primarily of studio vocalists who recorded regularly as solosits with a variety of bands, or in vocal ensembles like this. Here, they sing in a style that is not barbershop-it's a little more melodic and without the long notes one hears in barbershop. The Revelers are five male voices accompanied by a piano and occasionally a small string trio. The voices blend together so smoothly! The tunes are great too; many of them, like "Dinah," "Ol' Man River," and "Dancing In The Dark" are classics, but you've never heard them like this! The remastering on this CD is quite good considering the original source material available. Some light surface noise is still audible, but it's a refreshing change from the heavy crackle on my 78 copies. The folks in ASV have kept the recordings in their original mono (no fake stereo here!). The notes in the accompanying booklet are not so hot, with too much emphasis given to mentioning each tune's "chart position" (never mind that pop record charts as we know them now were non-existant in the 1920s) and listing every other band the author could think of that recorded each tune. Fortunately, the discography for the included records is good, listing recording dates and original issue numbers. All in all, this is a fantastic set that is sure to please.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation... eagerly awaiting vols. 2, 3, etc........1999-10-07

This British CD is superb. The sound restoration from 78s is excellent however some of the material seems to have been captured to CD at a slower-than-78rpm speed (compare the original 78s and the examples on the hard-to-find German compilation). The inclusion of items by the Revelers' alter-egos: The Merrymakers and the Singing Sophomores are a rare treat. If you are a Comedian Harmonist fan (you know who you are) then you will enjoy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Charming twenties entertainer.......2005-11-22

Johnny Marvin had a #1 hit with "Breezin' along with the breeze." It's just him and his ukulele singing a song about being carefree and it works fantastically. If other instruments had been added, the intimate feeling of the song - the sense that we are eavesdropping on a solitary, contented traveler - would have been lost. It is almost a prototype for the many ukulele songs that would be recorded in the twenties and the thirties. Other highlights here include "Singin' in the rain," "Little by little," and "Painting the clouds with sunshine." He didn't have a great voice (Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards had the beautiful, three octave voice). He wasn't a great ukulele player (Cliff Edwards could play hot). His charm is the ingenuous quality of his vocals. A well trained singer would have robbed these recordings of their charm. If you collect ukulele music (Half of these have accompaniment by small orchestras), this is a must. If you collect music from the twenties, this is on your "B" list of cds to buy. As always, Living Era has produced clean digital recordings with very little hiss. Enjoy.

Breezin' is the album track from Sensuous.

Cue is a very, extremely, beautiful Cornelius song and is the highlight here. I can only imagine him leaving it out from the main album because of sequencing or some concept I have not figured out.

The Fit Song remix is fine and humourous, but not a must.

And as for Kling Klang, this is 35 minutes of the same wind chimes (or door chimes) you can hear in the final minutes of Sensuous.
