5 out of 5 stars More killer guitar work from Mr. Coryell .......2006-12-16

CBW is back with their second album and Mr. Coryell, Mr. Bailey and Mr. White show why they're the best power trio slash jazz fusion group working today. By and large, big name recognition has eluded Larry Coryell despite his considerable talents. Larry will tell you that Jimi Hendrix is, hands down, the best guitarist ever. In the same breath, he'll tell you he resents him because it feels like his life was stolen from him. At roughly the same time as Jimi, Larry Coryell was blasting out fiery lick after lick and is widely regarded as the father of jazz fusion guitar. Doesn't seem fair that one man is a legend and the other man is acknowledged as one of the founders of a genre that many people think died back in the seventies. Stylistically, this album is more diverse than the first album, reminding his audience that Larry is equally at home playing straight jazz as well. Oh yeah, the other two guys, Victor Bailey and Lenny White, are pretty darned good as well. Seems like I've heard their names some place before. I think maybe they played fusion as well. Tongue planted firmly in cheek. One of my favorites of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Jazz Rock.......2006-10-05

Following their rockin' 2005 debut album, "Traffic" finds guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Victor Bailey and drummer Lenny White harnessing their considerable experience in an eclectic blend of jazz, R&B and rock.

Larry Coryell debuted on Chico Hamilton's "Dealer" album in 1966 and has appeared on more than 200 albums, 70 as a leader. Coryell was involved in the early fusion movement, later moved into acoustic, and for the last few years has refined his sound as a traditional jazz guitarist.

Victor Bailey began his recording career with Weather Report, and has played with such diverse groups as Steps Ahead and Madonna. Bailey's ability to play both rhythm and lead provides for a deep rhythm section.

Lenny White is best known for participating as one of the drummers on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew sessions, and as a member of the most famous lineup of Chick Corea's Return to Forever. Since embarking on a solo career White has collaborated with the cream of fusion players, including Brian Auger, Jan Hammer, Miroslav Vitous and Al DiMeola. With a heavy groove and chops to burn, White is a drummer comfortable in any style.

"Traffic" begins "Judith Love Jazz," a Coryell composition with blazing solos by both Coryell and Bailey.

Though the melody to Hendrix's "Manic Depression" is weak, Coryell manages to pull it out with an excellent rock guitar solo.

One of the highlights of the album is White's quirky "Door #3". This is a great tune, played wonderfully by all. White shows what an incredible drummer he is with his use of finesse and clever odd meters.

Coryell pulls out his acoustic on the Bailey's beautiful tune "Joyce's Favorite". Both Bailey and Coryell play lovely solos that could easily end up on a smooth jazz station.

For the first time on a recording, Coryell plays slide on the Monk tune "Misterioso". With a country flavor, Coryell solos with uncommon flair during the break. This tunes finishes with jazz comping and a short jazz solo by Coryell.

Once again Coryell plays acoustic on White's "Dedication". On this on, Bailey demonstrates some of the most beautiful bass lines you'll ever hear.

Where other similar artists might come out shredding, Bailey and While play with incredible restraint on their duet outing "Drums and Bass". Bailey plays mostly chord figures on this funky, uplifting jam.

Coryell is alone on his modern acoustic solo piece "Jake's Lullaby". Coryell demonstrates what a master guitarist he is on this jazz and classical workout.

The band returns with "Overruled". This track has a head that sounds loosely like a "Led Zeppelin" tune, but breaks into heavy jazz-rock chording.

The album concludes with the anthem "Electric Jam". Once you hear this tune, you can't get it out of your head. With its rock-inflected solos and incredible rhythm section, this track alone is worth the cost of the album.

There isn't a single low-point on "Traffic". Every tune has the vibe of a working band playing live at the top of their game. This is one of the top jazz-rock fusion albums of the last few years.

4 out of 5 stars Budget-Priced Introduction to Fusion Guitar Innovator.......2007-06-13

In 1969 Miles Davis recorded his groundbreaking album BITCHES BREW. The same year a 25-year old Larry Coryell recorded his Vanguard debut CORYELL. While maybe not the household name that Davis is, Coryell was a major influence on the whole fusion, jazz-rock music scene fom its infancy.

This 10-song collection begins with "Stiff Neck" (one of three tracks from LADY CORYELL), which has Coryell on electric guitar backed only by drummer Elvin Jones. The final track, "Theme from a Dream" (one of four tracks from INTRODUCING THE 11th HOUSE), again has Coryell on electric guitar alongside Randy Brecker (trumpet), Alphonse Mouzon (percussion), Mike Mandell (piano and synthesizer) and Danny Trifan (bass). The only other Vanguard albums represented here (and he recorded 12 from 1969 to 1979) are two songs that clock in at more than nine minutes each: "The Jam with Albert" from his debut, and "Spaces (Infinite)" from 1974's SPACES, which has Coryell trading solos with John McLaughlin (along with Chick Corea on electric piano, Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums).

The only acoustic track is from the 1978 album STANDING OVATION (Coryell plays 6- and 12-string Ovation guitars on the entire album--hence the title). Suprising this is not a Vanguard recording. It was recorded in Germany on the Mood Records label and distributed by Arista in the United States. Coryell's solo performance on this number shows another facet of playing style. [It's unclear why they didn't use a track from 1975's THE RESTFUL MIND where Coryell also plays some fine acoustic guitar alongside labelmates Ralph Towner, Collin Walcott and Glen Moore (all members of OREGON)].

While all but "Birdfingers" and "Theme for a Dream" are included on 1999's 2-disc anthology IMPROVISATIONS: BEST OF THE VANGUARD YEARS, this is a fine introduction to a gifted guitarist. [Running Time - 59:43] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

    5 out of 5 stars Larry Coryell & The 11th House.......2007-05-13

I may be prejudiced with my review, because I attended a small club on Sunset Strip, the year that Larry Coryell put out this album. I sat at a large table to the left of the stage. Their was 2 empty chairs in front of me. When Larry Coryell took a break, he sat at one of these chairs, RIGHT in front of me and my female companion. I was in AWE!!! I talked to him, in an strange moment, and he responded by saying that he was glad that we came to see our band. I told him how much I LOVED his guitar and the band. He responded, positively. When he went back on stage, we were AMAZED that LARRY CORYELL talked to us. DAMN! I NEVER got an autograph! Never the less, the concert was beyond belief!! Brilliant! Just astounding, especially Larry and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. I have NEVER, besides Carmine Appice, from Vanilla Fudge, ever witnessed a drummer of the effect of Mouzan! He was BRILLIANT, and addicting, as was Larry's guitar playing!

THIS album is EXACTLY played, and performed, as I had witnessed in that club. PERFECT JAZZ/ROCK! Absolute perfection, beyond belief for me. This is what jazz/rock fans have GOT to HAVE!!! Buy it, friends, you will NOT be disappointed to ANY degree! And find the original Larry Coryell album. BOY, will you be entertained in SO many ways! Larry is at his BEST!

5 out of 5 stars one of the all-time fusion masterpieces.......2005-12-11

Larry Coryell stands on equal footing with John McLaughlin as one of the premier jazz fusion guitarist and this probably represents his finest achievement. Many people consider his earlier work with McLaughlin, 'Spaces' as writing the textbook for fusion style guitarwork, but to me, this is his greatest overall musical achievement. Comparisons to the original Mahavishnu Orchestra may seem to be inevitable considering the power and attack of the band's performance, but stylistically, the band plays much closer to the fusion/funk style of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. Their is not as much of an eastern influence as the Mahavishnu Orchestra and there seems to be a wider variety of tempo and stylistic diversity on this recording. The synthesizer runs and Randy Brecker's trumpet keep pace rather well with Coryell's intensity and the compositional framework is elaborate and melodically sophisticated. But the highlight, of course, is the blitzkrieg of notes being pummelled out of Coryell's guitar mostly trading with synthesizer and trumpet, intermingled with more mid tempo improvisations; but the dynamics and interaction feature not just beautifully intricate work, but ingenious melodic and harmonic scales befitting musicians of the highest technical accomplishment. This is probably the most technically perfect fusion recording I have ever heard; a joyous and awesome performance!

5 out of 5 stars And miss out on "cover girl" & "rocks"? You're Nuts!.......2003-09-26

Don't get this version, make a few more mouse clicks & find the REMASTERED import version with 3 bonus tracks & pay the 2 or 3 dollars extra for that & be even more blown away, it's worth every penny. Far from being forgettable, the tracks "Cover Girl" & "Rocks" are as burning as fusion gets & as crazy as Mouzon gets on drums! Mouzon & Cobham are the reigning king monsters of all 1970s drummers.

Also, if you like this recording pick up "Barefoot Boy" by Coryell which is even better. Then go over to John Etheridge & Rick Sanders 2nd-Vision if you want to find a really obscure fusion album that ranks up with the best ever made by anyone.

    peace

Mountains of Funk. Listen to "Adam Smasher", there is Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, and Trumpet with a wah-wah pedal on it all going at the same time! How much funkier can it get?

5 out of 5 stars Fusion at its finest.......2000-05-10

Mr. Coryell is, in short, THE MAN. Here he is with his brainchild, The 11th House. This power-house of a band storms in with truth in the form of fusion. A. Mouzon on drums and R. Brecker on the horn. I used to play this album relentlessly on my jazz show in college. I mean, when they hit it, they HIT IT. A true landmark album of the 1970s, that took much too long to get on CD...

Perhaps the inventor of the oft-misused jazz-rock idiom, guitarist Larry Coryell can now claim a most unlikely feat. He's the father of a veritable guitar dynasty, or at least that's what The Coryells seems to demonstrate. From the charged, three-part suite that opens this album to the closing track, Coryell and his sons (Murali and Julian) are fantastically dialed in to a guitar virtuosity that's matched by Chesky Records' pristine audiophile setting. Larry stands out, of course, but sometimes just barely. He's awash in gushing strums when the threesome is cooking, and he's enveloped elsewhere in Murali's bluesy vocals and guitar. Percussionist Alphonse Mouzon and bassist Brian Torff acquit themselves gingerly in the sonic recesses, framing the guitars with perceptible but not driving rhythmic forces. Many guitar-rich sessions are too closely aimed only at musicians. Here, Murali's vocals (especially) on Mingus's "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" make it clear that this is a session both fiercely talent laden and entertaining. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars phenomenal playing, togetherness, variety of styles.......2003-09-03

    This is an amazing CD!

The three guitarists, Larry Coryell and his sons Murali and Julian, are phenomenal players and work wonderfully together. The bassist Brian Torff, and Percussionist Alphonse Mouzon don't do anything spectacular but they do a really good job of holding down the groove.

This CD has a really wide variety of styles: a wide variety of jazz, blues, and other styles. This variety, along with the great playing of course(!), makes this CD really interesting to listen to. If you're worried about too much variety and not enough coherence, that is not a problem. Despite the variety, this CD is very coherent and definitely has a feeling of togetherness.

Anyone who likes an intersting fusion of accoustic jazz and other styles should get this CD. Amazing!!

5 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Acoustic Guitar Wizardry.......2005-04-27

When I asked Larry Coryell what CD "Bolero" was on after his blistering set at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia he looked slightly perturbed by my question and answered "Bolero." I ordered the CD based on the performance of that one piece. The Bolero I heard that night was a little different than the one on the CD. It had a distinctly Indian flavor as if had been filtered through a Pakistani deli. I was blown away by the piece in concert and waited with baited breath for the CD to arrive. I was not disappointed. "Bolero" is arguably the finest collection of virtuoso acoustic guitar wizardry I have ever heard. Stylistically the CD veers between classical, jazz, flamenco and fusion with elements of rock. Despite this melting pot of influences, all the tracks mesh together seamlessly. The spirit of the music is positive, warm, upbeat and blissful. It would be the perfect CD to listen to while sitting on a beach watching the waves roll in. It gets played more than most of the CDS in my collection of over 600. I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best; Soulful Acoustic Guitar Odyssey.......2000-10-18

This is one of the most spectacular collections of high-quality, virtuoso acoustic guitar playing ever released. With Larry Coryell, the soul of the music NEVER gets lost in the technique and there is no better demonstration of Coryell at his best than this record. Coryell's musicianship, at this point in his career, was at an extremely high level and some of these tunes may take some extra listening to fully appreciate; but once you get used to them, you can't get enough.

The legendary versions of "Something for Wolfgang Amadeus," (first published in Guitar Player in the '70s) and "Improvisation on Bolero" are here, as well as "Elegancia Del Sol," Larry's sensational tribute to flamenco-master Paco De Lucia, the gorgeous French impressionist meditation "La Pluie," the Django Reinhardt style "Waltz No.6," and a whole bunch of fantastic blues and rock inspired pieces. There's also Brian Keane's "A Piece for Larry," (which Larry himself found too difficult to play) one of the most complicated and beautiful acoustic guitar pieces I've ever heard.

If you're a fan of great guitar playing and don't already own this CD, you are suffering a SERIOUS lack; hurry up and buy this right now before your musical tastes atrophy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC OF THE ACOUSTIC GUITAR.......2000-03-12

If you like acoustic guitar playing of the highest caliber, look no further. You've never heard playing like this...everything is played only as good as it has to be and left to breath. From flamenco influenced burners like "Elegancia del Sol" to wonderfully eccentric classical improvisations, everything on this record is a connoisseur's special yet accessible to all who can hear.

2 out of 5 stars Active or Passive Voice?.......2006-11-29

Part One: It must have been the wax.
      ------------------------------------
While it is essential for any artist to interpret the work of another before them, a regard for the original author must remain intact. This is an ambitious recording, however, we are rarely judged by our intent and far more often by our act. All too often in this recording we are listening to the artist playing an author's work rather than the author's work being played by an artist. Hubris abounds in this recording, from its conception to its release, and unfortunately suffers an all too predictable fate.

Part Two: I can see the numbers.
      -------------------------------
However, even more disenchanting than the usurping of a masterwork is the lack of inspired performances, as if each is so out of context that within the confines of these "snippets" the artist never engages leaving the listener equally disengaged, akin to a polished paint-by-numbers canvas executed in water color by a haphazard collection of period icons. If this was the very first recording of this sterling composition, it may well have been the very last.

      5 out of 5 stars Four Seasons a Winner.......2005-07-21

This is the second copy of Vivaldi's Greatest Hit I have purchased. I liked it so much, I decided to buy another copy to give my 15-yr-old nephew, who is a violinist and lover of classical music. He loves it, too, so two thumbs up from this reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars A New Twist for an Old Favorite!.......2004-05-28

I own two other renderings of "The Four Seasons" in addition to this one, and this disc is my favorite. Vivaldi intended for "The Four Seasons" to be a multimedia experience, incorporating music, image, and poetry. This collection truly captures that spirit of versatility by arranging the work for several different instruments (not just guitar, as the previous review would have you believe). In addition, the movements rendered with soloist Gottfried von der Goltz on the Baroque violin sound almost completely different from any previous recordings. His style is hard, almost violent, while his instrument sounds much darker and richer than a modern violin. It adds a depth to "The Four Seasons" lacking in many new studio recordings. The third movement from "Summer" in particular is stunning, with von der Goltz transforming it from a mere succession of rushing 16th notes into an exuberant, virtuosic portrait of a prairie thunderstorm. The guitar, flute, and electronic arrangements (only one electronic arrangement, however) are excellent, retaining the true spirit of the original while managing to add something new. The disc contains the entire cycle of the seasons twice, with various different instrumentations playing each movement. Lovers of "The Four Seasons," Baroque music, or classical music in general will find MUCH to appreciate here!

3 out of 5 stars Not as much fun as it could be given the premise.......2003-04-16

This isn't a bad album. It's a perfectly nice run-through of Four Seasons, twice. But the premise is that there are many different performers in many different styles, and the actuality comes out less varied than one would hope.

The performers are certainly all-stars, and there's nothing wrong with any of the performances. It's just that, they're, well, the same performances those all-stars could give any time. There are no new interpretations of the work. There are very few adaptations to unusual instruments - except for the movements done mainly on guitar, everything else is essentially the basic original orchestration, with different soloists filling in instead of the violin - Michaela Petri on recorder, James Galway on flute, etc.

And I didn't feel that the choice of which soloists did which movements was as inspired as it could have been. In several movements, the soloists hardly came across as soloists at all. The order in which the performers appeared, appeared to have been chosen at random. That is, every movement was played in order, with some randomly chosen set of artists doing it. Then, the (nearly) whole thing was played again, this time with the artists chosen randomly a different way, so that Michaela Petri was doing a different movement from the first time through.

Many casual listeners to classical music aren't aware that each "Season" is actually made up of three sections. The recording switches performers with every section. I personally think this would have been more effective if one set of performers had done all three sections of a season, long enough for the listener to really get a feel for their sound, then switched to another performer only with the change of seasons. With 8 seasons to go through (four times two), that still would have allowed for plenty of variety, and left one much more able to appreciate that variety.

If you don't already have a recording of "The Four Seasons" then this one isn't bad at all - go ahead and buy it. But if you already have several recordings, you won't be adding anything unusual or radically different to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Back Together Again - Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.......2006-10-13

I'm so happy that this album is finally available on CD. I don't think the sound quality is such that it should keep anyone from buying this CD which I recommend to all. Check out LC on Young Django with Stephane Grappelli, Phillip Catherine and NHOP or LC on Count's Jam Band Reunion or LC on Spaces with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous and Billie Cobham. You know how you sing a song to yourself, well I'd do that all the time to the title track and now I've got the CD to accompany my bad singing. Get this CD, you'll be happy you did!

5 out of 5 stars As great as you remember!.......2004-06-26

Truly an incendiary slice of mid 70's fusion, Mouzon and Coryell both at the very top of their game. These sessions were rounded out by Phil Catherine on 2nd guitar and John Lee on bass, both fusion players of the first order. Couple of simple vocals near the end of this disc but this album is all about the PLAYING ! Another reviewer had noted his dislike of the mastering and though I grant that it is probably not state of the art, it sounds pretty good to these ears. No need to be put off. I'm still listening to the software more than the hardware. Get this while it's in print!

3 out of 5 stars good fusion let down by poor mastering.......2003-05-27

The is a good effort by larry Coryell but the sound quality on this disc is horrendous! The label, "Wounded Bird" seems to make a habit of this. This CD sounds like it was mastered from the vinyl masters..just like the original cd pressings back in the mid eighties sounded, weak, no separation, no highs, and low volume! This is extrememly frustrating. If you are going to do it...do it right! With the incredible technology today it is a shame that these titles being out out by wounded Bird sound so bad. If you like your fusion with good sound beware...If you are an audiophile...run home to your mommas! If you just want to hear it, and don't have the ability to master it from a vinyl record your self...buy it.

      5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2002-06-22

Well, it's midnight and I'm cruising around seeing if old classics have come out on cd. And I as a joke I type in "Coryell and Mouzon," and here we are. I didn't think anything would show up; I thought it was too obscure. I'll get to the point. This is absolutely one of the greatest jazz rock albums of all time. Except, I am a rock fan, not a jazz fan. So, this is a rock jazz album (ok, cd). It is entirely instrumental, but there is some brief singing on a song or two. This thing rocks hard, and I'm not kidding. The guitar playing is stellar, and I mean stellar. The bonus is you don't just get one great guitar player in Larry, you also get Philip Catherine - they are a great guitar duo. It is not pure "hard rock" but is as close to that as rock jazz can get. This really is not for pure jazz fans, it rocks too hard for you (I don't mean to be condescending). Of course, the drumming is fantastic, that is the Mouzon part of the title. And, I don't want to leave the bass player out, he does a great job; it's just that he has so much to compete with! If you like 70's hard rock with a jazz influence, and as a song I suggest Sister Andrea from Mahavishnu Live - this is that type of album. It is the best example I have ever heard of instrumental rock jazz. It is an absolute classic of that genre. Ok, I'm sorry, I said "genre," that's such a cliche word. But I'm not kidding, if you like rock with a jazz kick that makes it unclassifyable, this is it. I simply cannot say enough good things about this CD. And if I haven't convinced you yet, they also at times throw some great funk into the mix! BUY IT.
