The platonic ideal of a Tyner record.......2005-09-04
I definitely agree with William Donoghue. Both technically & artistically, FOCAL POINT is the toppermost of the tynermost. Tyner's low-end is in the left channel and his upper register is in the right channel. On Tyner's own records as a leader, Tyner has been every bit as erratic as Coltrane. But Tyner really redeemed himself with FOCAL POINT. This is fierce hard-hitting stuff that hits you where it counts. There's a 3-beat track called PARODY. Which raises the question: is PARODY so-named because it's a parody of Chick Corea's 3-beat tracks and Bill Evans's 3-beat tracks?
Here's a quote from Tyner himself: "Composition is taking a larger role, which is a good sign for the music. It means that we're hearing other forms. When changes take place in the music, it often happens compositionally. Guys start to write differently, and pretty soon you'll hear a concept change. Of course, it depends on the artist. John [Coltrane] created a change thru his playing. His writing complemented his style. In a way I think that's true in my own case. I write my own music best, as a complement to my style as a player."
Test The Limits Of Your Stereo With This.......2003-01-30
Focal Point has always been my favorite McCoy Tyner album. I will remember when it first came out, I was fascinated by the music and, on my first flush of success, I too it with me when I bought my first stereo components. The detailed interplay between the piano, bass, drums and bongos(!) was amazing to listen to. I tested several speakers before I found the AR-2s which would allow me to hear each intstrument separately and hear how each instrumentalist responded to the other. What more can you ask of a jazz recording? It's all about communicating and when you can hear each instrument separately and see how well they communicate, it's a thrill. I don't think any other recording has sounded the same to me since. This CD is the standard against which I measure all others. I have had the opportunity to see McCoy Tyner's trio twice in the past six months and he still thrills me from the first chord. Don't miss him when he and Aaron Scott (drums) and Avery Sharpe (bass and electric bass) come your way. You will never hear piano the same way again. Buy this recording; you will never regret it.
Wow!.......2000-08-21
When I first heard this album way back in 1976 my first reaction was Wow! Now that this music has been transfered to CD my reaction is still wow! For me, Focal Point is McCoy at his best and I thought this music was cutting edge back in the 70's and I still believe it is cutting edge today. This is my favorite McCoy Tyner recording and would definitely be on my desert island list.
Excellent.......1999-10-05
This is great small group McCoy, with two reed players, bass, drums and percussionist. McCoy was intense and melodic in these days, brimming with energy. The horns and percussionist provide variety and color which is lacking in his current trio group. The music has an exotic, Middle Eastern color or flavoring at times which is very appealing.

Another fine band from the Deram records period.......2006-01-29
Their song "Sycamore Syd," included in this very comprehensive (although not totally complete, see review below) collection of their work, is a "very tough to find" classic among early Deram 45 releases. The music here is very steady throughout and a good example of the sound of the period (mid-60's). "Miss Sinclair" is a monster, as is the demo version of "Reflections" which sounds years ahead of its time. The version of "Reflections" that was actually released is in here as a copy of a rather scratchy 45. That's OK!! Sounds just the way I remember the songs of that day.
A must have...of a well deserving group.......2005-12-03
I found out about Focal Point by reading their column on Marmalde-Skies, they seemed just like the type of Psychedelic band I would enjoy to hear. So I e-mailed Paul Tennant (Guitarist and vocalist of the group)and he suggested me to the 94 Baker Street cd which had 5 of their tracks, those tracks were absolutley fantastic. Then he informed me that a CD of them was going to be made with all their other ercordings, I couldn't wait to recieve it. I wasn't to be dissapointed as this cd is absolutley great. along with their 5 great tracks that have been released came an abundance of other lost gems of 60's psychedelic music (Girl On the Corner is one of the best songs I've ever heard). This cd is a must for any fan of Psychedelic music. Especially fans of the "Undergorund" scene. It's great that Paul kept this band alive with the great success story of them and this cd release, Kutos to you Paul, You did an awesome job!

Before Demon Hunter Before Training for Utopia there was..........2004-11-16
Focal Point. To give a brief discription of the band first I will quote what solid state records had to say about them: "Focal Point is a step beyond hardcore. Pushing the boundaries with punk and metal overtones. The multi-dimensional approach to songwriting is both innovative and intelligent. Selections such as `Inception', `Broken Bonds', `No Return', and `Attainment' reach beyond the surface for deeper meaning. One that the band wants you to figure out for yourself. A central theme of non-conformity and self-respect can be found in an age when lyrics generally reflect negativity. Focal Point guides the listener towards something more positive without sacrificing any of the intensity or aggression needed. A positive outlet for those searching for a higher purpose." That right there is something I totally agree with. Of course Focal Point doesn't have the technical premise of Training for Utopia, and not the amazing musicianship of Demon Hunter but it has it's charm. This is definately for fans of Living Sacrifice, Training for Utopia, and Strongarm.
RIP FOCAL POINT.......2000-07-12
I first saw these guys at Unashamed's last show, and bought their 7". So I couldn't wait until Suffering of the Masses" came out. I was the first one to buy it in my church book store. And let me tell you it is awesome, the vocals are great, and their are some the best breakdowns you will ever here. The lyrics are great, especally "Homicide" a song against aboration. If you like bands like Earth Crisis get this.
is it better than Hatebreed?.......2000-06-18
This band is christian and they have there sh*t goin' on! Focal Point has phat-ass breakdowns, with aggressive vocals straight up sounding like V.O.D or Will Haven, pulverising heavy riffs.Hatebreed is brutal and very much short, but there 3rd newest album may have a chance when comes out this fall.In other words Focal Point crushes Hatebreed's first & second album.
Totally Raw !.......2000-06-06
This Album is totally raw! This is one of Solid State's best releases. Don Clark's guitar is totally awesome in this!
THIS IS 100% RAW !.......1999-11-07
If you like Living Sacrfice or Training For Utopia Buy this CD. I 100% guarentee you will like it. This is real hardcore. I crown Focal Point Hardcore Kings !

Songs coast along easily but no magic in the journey.......2002-04-09
First song has a catchy melody but actually grows tiresome within three and a half minutes. The rest of the tracks just don't have much to recommend - competently played but no invention or intrigue.
Wonderful melodies that carry you away........1999-04-13
I have been a Peter Davison devoted listener for many years. This CD contains wonderful melodies and the climate carries you away. This is a characteristic of Davison/s music and, no boubt, this CD is Davison at some of his best moments.
