1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good popular music........2005-08-14

The interesting issue about this recording is that Williams himself directs. It is always a plus to listen to music played by its author. Average performance by the orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Still great!.......2005-07-23

John Williams has the magic of translating music from movies. Even not watching the movies themselves, you can still understand what's happening because of the music that comes with it.

I'm happy the music industry compiled this marvellous CD together. It has all the greatest hits like Luke and Leia, Indiana Jones march and the star wars main theme. These songs are really some of the great examples of Williams' finest.

Even if the music isn't really that clear in movies, it's still gives a great impact on the stories. If you watch a movie made up of only dialogues and fights, what's the thrill, we can see fights anytime anywhere. So the element that makes the movies really attractive and interesting is the music itself.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances as well as Music.......2005-04-06

When I picked up this CD I was amazed. I am a big Williams fan and love the Boston Pops. All the pieces are well done and flawless (except for some small tempo issues in "1941") Though all the peices stand out the handsdown best is "The Cowboys" Overture. The ritch sound as well as the great musicmanship make this a joy to here. Another good highlight is the "Midway" March. Midway was a relitivley underated score being in the middle of "Jaws" and "Star Wars" (Both of witch are also on the CD but, Jaws could have had solid feeling but is otherwise performed rather great) The rousing March in my opinion is as rousing as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Superman" (Both yet again are on the CD and Superman's opening is absolutly breathtaking even better than the actual soundtrack. The Trumpet and French Horn fanfare makes you yourself visualize the might of the man of steel himself. But the Midway march is given a stunning representaion with the ritch, lush sound of the Boston Pop's brass section. The CD also has some of John Williams music for the concert stage such as the well known Olympic Fanfare (1984 Los Angeles), The Liberty Fanfare as well as the Mission Theme (The NBC news anthem) all offer a nice break from the movie scores. The only down side to the CD is that because it was made in 1987 it doesn't have music from Hook, Far and Away, Schindler's List and of course Jurassic Park. But even though it lacks Williams' early 90's scores its always a Joy to listen to as well as a treat for the ears. So i give it two thumbs up and *****.
I advise any John Williams/Boston Pops fan not to let this gem slip through their fingers! ;)

5 out of 5 stars De Williams los Boston lo mejor..........2004-12-14

Grandioso.

5 out of 5 stars Williams at His Finest....as of 1987.......2003-07-13

For fans looking for a sampler of John Williams' music circa 1987, this CD is a treasure trove of selected movie and special occasion themes. While not as comprehensive as Sony Classical's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collection, there is enough variety to satisfy even the most casual Williams fan. Included here among his famous themes (Star Wars, ET, Superman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) are his 1984 Olympic Fanfare, "The Mission" (NBC News theme), and the rousing Overture to the John Wayne film The Cowboys. As always, the Boston Pops Orchestra shines under the baton of Hollywood's -- and America's -- favorite composer!

3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30

we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10

This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13

Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

Peter Benchley's bestselling novel about the sobering impact of shark attacks on a New England beach town's tourist season gave director Steven Spielberg the perfect opportunity to craft a suspenseful action-drama. An immediate blockbuster upon release in 1975, the movie is being hailed as a classic 25 years later. The 20 minutes of additional score and interviews with Spielberg and composer John Williams may be the strongest enticements for anyone who already owns the original soundtrack, but anyone who's put off purchasing this most identifiable score now has the temptation of improved sonic clarity to contend with as well. Since so much of Williams's score--at the time, his second for Spielberg, before going on to E.T. and Schindler's List, among others--depends on the nearly silent tension buttressed by deep, probing notes, this wide-screen audio mapping only heightens the drama. "Shark Attack," "The Great Shark Chase," and "The Shark Approaches," along with the main theme, represent what empathic movie scoring is all about. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Best Horror Soundtrack ever!.......2007-02-05

This soundtrack is the best ever! I have a different version, the original this is some aniversary, but Jonh Williams is a genius! The Jaws Theme is just amazing and the other themes are just OUTSTANDING! This is the most known Spielberg soundtrack ever! I love this music, classical isn't my favorite genre of music, but this soundtrack is amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Jaws - Collector's Edition.......2006-11-21

For those who have watched the movie Jaws (ask yourself, who hasn't) will know that one of many key elements that made the movie a huge success was the fantastic score John Williams did for it. This cd captures all the music from the movie perfectly, with some new elements thrown in that are not found in the film.

The linear notes are bright and colourful and provide some interesting information, which gives the overall package a nice touch. The overall cd package is certainly not a rushed effort and is worth every cent. A highly recommended purchase for those who love their soundtracks or anyone who wants to relive the film through the music.

5 out of 5 stars What "Uncle Sparky" doesn't seem to realize..........2005-09-28

...is that this IS the original soundtrack recording. This is the same recording used in the actual film. The old soundtrack released was a re-recording, done by John Williams especially for the soundtrack release, hence variations in track lengths and tempos when compared to this release.

Jaws is a fantastic score - one of John Williams' best, and certainly one of the best scores ever composed. And it is wonderful to finally hear the music as it is heard in the film. The old release had its points, but the sound was muffled and full of tape hiss. This new release has better sound and more music. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Jaws.......2005-09-21

With the exception of the Shark Cage Fugue being placed out of order (placed near the beginning rather than near the end) it was very satisfying to find this. John Williams is always a worthy buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ,haunting and mellifulous.......2005-06-14

i have purchased this CD from amazon .com being a fan for the movie. The moment i played it in my system , i imagined myself being in the sea with the great white right in front of me.The score by John Williams is a masterpiece and i would recommend this product to any one who likes melody and suspense in listening.Great work Mr.Williams.

4 out of 5 stars Gentle and poetic.......2006-12-02

This beautiful and moving album contains evocative lyrics and an instrumental mix that includes guitar, chimes, dulcimer, synths, marimba, piano, bass and drums. The musical style is typically singer-songwriter but some of the arrangements provide the songs with an exotic, world music flavour. Some of my favorites are Creation Dream with its intricate guitar and percussive textures, Hills Of Morning with its lovely scriptural imagery and the uptempo Northern Lights with its urgent rhythm and celebration of nature. Of course the highlight of the album is the exquisite Wondering Where The Lions Are, a spiritual masterpiece with its hypnotic, lilting beat and stirring lyrics. It reminds me a lot of the music of Van Morrison, not so much in the structure but in the sentiment, truly inspired and inspiring. Because this song is so magnificent, it overshows the rest of the album as the other songs suffer by comparison. Dancing In The Dragon's Jaws is tuneful and intelligent throughout, and worth it just for Lions alone.

5 out of 5 stars Wondering Where The Christians Are?.......2006-02-16

Whether intended or not, 'Dancing In The Dragon's Jaw' is by far the most overtly Christian of all Bruce Cockburn's albums/CD's. While all his earlier works were also deeply spiritual in content, this album with songs like 'Wondering Where The Lions Are', 'Creation Dawn' and 'No Footprints' seemed to exude the Christian message and finally caught the attention of the Protestant community-at-large. Despite his attempt to dis-associate himself from mainstream evangelical Christianity, this album was an overnight hit with young believers and he was immediately embraced as one of the flock. It was probably this unwanted association with Protestantism that accelerated his departure from the mellow folk roots of his early work to pursue a hard-edged, secular rock sound ever since.

Whatever the case, Christian or otherwise, this -11 track re-issue of the CD (containing 2 unnecessary bonus tracks) is without doubt the most upbeat, joyous collection of songs in the immense and eclectic Cockburn collection.

Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Cockburn's best work.......2005-12-26

After 25 years, this album remains my favorite of Cockburn's, and in fact my favorite from any artist. Cockburn's work from other eras is compelling and from time to time even inspired. Dancin' in the Dragon's Jaws, however, reaches a plateau of transcendent perfection that is simply stunning. The songs are beautifully written and fit perfectly in their melodies. (To be honest, some of Cockburn's later poetry seems shoe-horned into the tunes he writes.) The tunes are fleshed out in a rich mix of acoustic guitar, piano, and percussion. Beneath everything is the power of Cockburn's poetry. He is reaching for a deep spiritual vision that is glimpsed "just beyond the range of normal sight" but never fully grasped. The overall effect is both spiritual longing and tranquility. It has never failed that whenever I have shared this album with friends that they have loved it at once and invariably bought a copy for themselves. If you aren't yet a Cockburn fan, this is the place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce's Spiritual Masterpiece.......2005-10-18

I know Bruce, even in the 70's, has always tried to distance himself from the Comtemporary Christian Music scene - and I can understand why. However, this work should be required listening for every CCM artist. It is wonderful in every way; from it's joyful, poetic, never heavy-handed lyrics to superb musicianship. A case could definitely be made that this is Bruce's finest work. Every song is a success; there is no low point. The remastering makes this cd sound better than ever. The only disappointment is the 2 new instrumentals, which add nothing to an already perfect album.

5 out of 5 stars Still powerful after all these years.......2003-12-12

This remains Cockburn's greatest work - standing as a stunning collection of songs, but also as a great sequential album. It contains the typical socio-political commentary found in his other recordings, but also has more than the usual melodic strains to sing along to, and the guitar playing is fantastic. The two extra tracks on this issue are instrumental, and reflect the era of the album well - it's easy to see why Cockburn was voted one of the world's best singer/songwriters so many times over.

If you're starting out with Cockburn, get this first, then follow it up with 'Stealing Fire' (similar era, but much more grittily orchestrated), then 'Humans' (some great poetry on this), then perhaps 'Nothing But A Burning Light' (beautiful songs and a more accepting, positive outlook than some of his earlier works).

It's a pity he has been described as Canada's best-kept secret - this double-edged term serves to keep him out of the mainstream, where his messages are most keenly needed.

never a bad album...

5 out of 5 stars GWAR has done it again with a concept album.......2007-02-21

So we count 2006 and two years has passed since the splendid 'War Party' release, with extensive touring following it. Being on 'sounds of the underground' tour two years in a row (three with 2007) definitely cranks up expectations for a new GWAR record, also said to be a conceptual one.

And it is damn good. While 'Beyond Hell' may not have as many catchy tracks as 'War Party' does, it makes up for it in it's entirety. Production is greeat, story is enjoyable, the songs makes you want to listen to the disc over and over. What I especially like about it is that GWAR has taken on a somewhat more serious edge, continuing the trend from the last albums. 'Tormentor' may have a chorus with somewhat cheesy choir, but a blistering solo, depth in the verses, and great lyrics makes it my favorite track. 'Eighth lock' which is becoming the second video off the album is a deep, penetrating one, in-your-face metal.

The Alice Cooper cover at the end is negligable, but of course we know it was made to get GWAR some airplay. It's not bad, but doesn't really add anything either.

Pete Townshend has done a brilliant job with production, Cory Smoot who is a most talented musician has lifted GWAR's musical level, and with the stage show and charisma of the solid members this makes for an excellent experience. GWAR rules, long live GWAR! 5/5.

3 out of 5 stars Gwar has jumped the shark .......2006-12-19

I saw Gwar the other night in NYC. they blew. They played mostly new songs that no one knew. And when they did play older songs they played them really slow and boring. The between song skits were extremley lame. bring out the gwar protester, priest, ect.. three minuetes of insulting each other, then chop their head off and spray the crowd with fake blood. It really has gotten old.. I never though I would get sick of this once great band but i never thought I would hate the new Star Wars movies either.. Gwar has really given up on doing anything new or original. Even the might Immortal Corruptor wasn't enough to bring me back into the show. I was there with three other HUGE Gwar fans and we all walked out as Sick of You was starting.. I'm done with this band.

4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2006-12-06

this album is for the most part very similar musically to war party, tho i like the lyrics a bit better, and the vocals are a bit clearer. a pretty solid release. only thing i got against it really is the style of the music, personally i liked the style on violence has arrived better. although this is no america must be destroyed, i'd still recomend it if your a gwar fan. favorite songs- Go to Hell, The Ultimate Bohab, Murderers Muse

3 out of 5 stars I Wish There Was a 3.5 Stars Rating.......2006-11-30

This review refers to the special edition that comes with the DVD. I watched the DVD before listening to the album, and some of the extras on there just had me rolling! The "Meet Dave Brockie" interviews are hilarious, with him pretending(?) to be some wigged-out junkie trying to pawn off some recently stolen items on the interviewer. "This is a really nice toaster oven!" The "Moscow Metal Moment" is really funny too. Heck, the DVD's great.

The packaging on this is superb. Clear graphics, a full lyric sheet with text in between the songs weaving the whole thing into a single narrative, a poster and a 6-panel gatefold sleeve. Big budget for sure. Perhaps that's why it took so long to get mine :-) I couldn't find this item in stock anywhere locally, and it took Amazon 6 days to ship it to me.

As to the CD, I really only like half of it. The first half is much stronger than the second in my opinion, with "Tormentor" being the best song on the album. I love that song. The production quality is top notch though. It's not that the latter half of the album sucks, but there's nothing in the songs really to set them apart; to make me want to listen to them over and over, or to make me want to individually throw them on a mix CD.

I'd put this album on par with War Party, although the special edition is better than War Party because of the hilarious DVD extras. I really like half of War Party, and the rest I never listen to. I'm thinking it'll be the same with this one. Also, I'd just like to say that I think "School's Out" is a totally lame choice in terms of a GWAR cover song. It just smacks of record-label pressure, like the label told GWAR if they were going to get behind this release they'd need something to play on the radio. Bah! If GWAR were set on covering an Alice Cooper song, the "Ballad of Dwight Frye" would have been much more apropos.

Still, I'm seeing the Scumdogs in less than a week here in Atlanta, and I can't wait!

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01

This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."
