If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

tough to coin an accolade for this work that has not been used before. in one album, cobain summed up the experience of a generation and defined the decade's dominant rock sound -- whether he wanted to or not. what amazes most, in listening to this and its follow-up 10 years later, is the impeccable songwriting. cobain seemingly was incapable of writing a song that was not infectious, or of writing lyrics that were not captivating.

The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, "I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun" with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of "About a Girl"--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights include covers of three Meat Puppets tracks (featuring special guests Curt and Kris Kirkwood of that influential "college rock" band), the weepy cello on the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam," and their cover of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." --Lorry FlemingAlbum Description

Picture this: Kurt Kobain, 3 acoustic guitars, a set of drums, and a cello. What could me more perfect than that? This album is a set of 14 songs from Nirvana's second album all played acoustically. The only thing better than a greatest hits album is an album with live, acoustic music from the band. Here's where the band hit (and missed) with this album.
So what's to like about this album? First, aside from a few pitchy spots here and there, Kobain's vocals are top notch and send chills down my spine. I personally prefer his recorded vocals to his live vocals but I'm sure a lot of people out there love the rawness of his voice when he sings live. The way he sings shows a ton of emotion as though each word that comes out of his mouth means the world to him yet he remains mellow with an "I don't care about anything" type of attitude.
Second, although the grungy sound is gone due to the lack of electric guitars, the hardness is still there in my eyes. With 3 guitars going at the same time, the band is able to achieve a great mixture of sounds while still maintaining the "you can feel it in your stomach", loud, hard, beats. "Come As You Are" doesn't lose its great intro or guitar solo. Kurt just plugs in his acoustic guitar and the sound is just like the original. Another stand out song in terms of guitar work is "The Man Who Sold the World". It's great to hear a band that can not only play their songs acoustically but can also make them sound so complex, giving a whole new sound to their songs. Equally impressive is drummer Dave Grohl's background vocals.
Third, as mentioned above, the band uses a cellist alongside their guitars and drums. Although it's sometimes hard to miss, you can certainly hear it in "All Apologies". This helps to create a more bluesy sound with some of the songs.
Fourth, those who don't know much about Nirvana's music (myself included) will be thrilled to see that "About a Girl", "Come As You Are", and "All Apologies" are on this album. You also may recognize "Dumb" and "Polly". All of these songs are done superbly. And you will be pleasantly surprised that there are a lot of great songs on this album that you haven't heard of. From the haunting "Something in the Way" and "Oh Me" to the incredibly sad "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (my new current favorite Nirvana song) to the blast-worthy "Plateau", you'll find a lot of great new material on this album.
And what's not to like? Not much. As mentioned above, there are some pitchy spots throughout the album but that's expected. Some of the songs are a bit on the short side which isn't a huge turn off but just something I observed. In terms of songs I didn't like, "Pennyroyal Tea" isn't all that great and "Lake of Fire" and "Plateau" are both too country-sounding for my taste.
My rating: 4/5 stars. I probably would've given 4.5 stars if I could. The reason for taking 1 star off is that I find it hard to play every song on this album. I tend to skip over maybe 4 or 5 of them. Other than that, this album is perfect and Nirvana fans as well as fans of great music in general will equally be impressed with how this live album turned out. Be sure to pick it up!
Necessary for any music collection.......2007-05-31
If you're getting into more Unpluggeds, check out Neil Young and Eric Clapton. The Korn Unplugged that just came out recently might be worth it too if you have a basic enjoyment of their music.
Best Nirvana album EVER.......2007-05-22
Other than the fact that every song is top quality but Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam (which is terrible) is the variety of song selection. They mostly skip over their hits - Pennyroyal Tea, About a Girl, Come As You Are and All Apologies make appearances, but so do three near-obscurities from Nevermind. Now, Something in the Way and Polly were great songs in the first place, but I never liked the studio take of On a Plain - I saw it as one of the several generic speedy punk-grunge rockers that took up space on the album's second side (others include Lounge Act, Stay Away and Territorial Pissings). But it's one of my favorites in this setting. The melody comes into full view, there's an added backup vocal from Dave Grohl similar to the one on Heart Shaped Box, and it's set to a nice toe-tapping rhythm. Very cool. And this version of Pennyroyal Tea is also better than the familiar hit one (which is hard to beat), getting even MORE raw emotion from the chorus. Not to mention their high-profile cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World, which actually isn't unplugged but who cares?
Stick around for the last five songs, too. Three are covers of Meat Puppets (who, if you don't know them, are a fairly high-profile college-rock band - high profile for a college-rock band, that is). Lake of Fire has the aforementioned good acoustic picking and is probably my favorite song about hell ever written (sure beats similar songs by Slayer or Slipknot!), Plateau has a good back-porch vibe, and Oh Me, strong vocals.
And if this was just the last two songs, I'd still give it five stars. I love the studio take on All Apologies as much as the proverbial next guy (assuming he's a Nirvana fan, of course), but this one's even better. The perfect song for an all acoustic setting. And Where Did You Sleep Last Night (originally a Leadbelly song called In the Pines) is, I think, my favorite Nirvana song ever. Especially the ending. The group had gotten into a killer quiet, swaying mood for awhile, and then all the sudden Kurt loses all control and starts screaming, "MY GIRL, MY GIRL, DON'T YOU LIE TO ME, TELL ME WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT". Whoa... whoa, whoa, and whoa.
You can just see Nirvana going in an all-acoustic direction had Kurt not killed himself (of course, he might not have killed himself had he not been FORCED into stardom by frickin' MTV) when you listen to this.

Overwhelmed by sudden success, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise maven Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame ("Serve the Servants") and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan ("Milk It"). Of course, they might all simply be about Courtney Love. Gossip aside, there is no denying the sheer power of Cobain's songwriting, his singing, and the band's amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching "All Apologies." "All in all is all we are," he intones repeatedly, only for Cobain that's no consolation. --Percy KeeganCustomer Reviews:

Nirvana's BEST: 1993's In Utero.......2007-04-13
I first heard this about 1995, one year after Kurt Cobain's death.
In Utero(1993) is one of the first Cds I ever bought, back in junior high school. I had "Nevermind" on cassette. To me, Nevermind- a sleeker, more polished sounding release.
"Heart Shaped Box" - is the video that inspired me to buy this album. It just sounded so cool, w/ bright colors & death like themes (hospitals, man on a cross, black waters). "HSB" remains my favorite song by Nirvana.
From start to finish opening w/ "Serve the Servants" and ending w/ the closer "All Apologies"- this is just a more raw and mature and visual w/ lyrics of "umblical noose" - "meat-eating orchids" - "magnet tar pit" - "rape" among others, just more descriptive and real.
This also brings Nirvana a return to their roots & not conforming to what the media, record company & fans wanted to hear after "Nevermind."
This was no mainstream grunge-accessible pop like everyone wanted, but to me it BLOWS "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the rest of their 1991 Hit, AWAY!
Swansong of the most overrated band ever........2007-04-12
Kurt Cobain wasn't a genius by any means, his song-writing was terrible along with his "guitar playing." Back when Kurt was still alive, Nirvana was actually struggling with record sales but after Kurt blew his own head off, that's when record sales skyrocketed and they got the legendary status they don't deserve by any means. The only talented member of Nirvana was Dave Grohl, and his recent work with Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) and Killing Joke is way better than Nerdvana.
The death of Chuck Schuldiner (Death) was a real tragedy in the guitar world, not the death of Kurt Cobain. Chuck was 10000000000000000000x better than Kurt at both playing guitar and writing songs. Just listen to Death's "The Philosopher" (from "Individual Thought Patterns") and "Crystal Mountain" (from "Symbolic"), and you'll be de-converveted from this joke of a band.
If you're not ready for Death, check out the only worthy grunge band Alice in Chains (particularly "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies"), RIP Layne Staley.
Lastly, Nirvana didn't save rock, it just made it worse. Thanks to them, we have awful bands like Korn, the Deftones, Cold, Staind, and other nu-metal/a$$rock bands.

Essentially a greatest-hits collection with one previously unreleased song, "You Know You're Right," and producer Scott Litt's 1994 remix of "Pennyroyal Tea," Nirvana the album is nevertheless a welcome addition to the band's canon. Crisp, elegant liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Fricke put us squarely in Kurt Cobain's mindset as he entered a Seattle studio in January 1994--a full two days later than expected--to record what would be his final session with Nirvana. The resulting "You Know You're Right" locates Cobain at the apogee of his disenfranchisement with tongue nevertheless planted firmly in cheek. Bawdy, raucous, and venomous, "You Know You're Right" could have been lifted from Nevermind. A mix of tracks from that album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come as You Are," "Lithium," and "In Bloom") sits opposite stuff from early EPs and the Bleach disc ("About a Girl," "Been a Son," and "Sliver"), plus two from the MTV Unplugged sessions and several more from In Utero. Not the Nirvana treasure chest we hoped for, but solid nonetheless. --Kim HughesAlbum Description

Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder
Album Description
The box set spans Nirvana's entire career, from a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987 to solo acoustic performances from singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain in 1994. With The Lights Out features a 60-page color booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and writer Neil Strauss. The three CDs, arranged largely chronologically contains home and rehearsal demos, including for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (whose lyric "With the lights out" provides the set's title), "Rape Me," "Heart Shaped Box" and a trio penned by legendary bluesman Leadbelly. Heard in the 12 previously unreleased solo acoustic tracks are such gems as "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances range from "Anorexorcist" in 1987 to "Dumb" in 1991 (two years before it was on 1993's In Utero). Along with the remaining debuts are a handful of earlier issued, though rare, b-sides and demos as well as the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Noteworthy among them are debut renditions of "Pennyroyal Tea", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" both from early 1991. Also premiering is an unlikely performance of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons In The Sun" shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.Customer Reviews:

Incredible for sheer variety.......2007-05-06
While a B side collection would be an excellent companion piece to the Greatest Hits collection and it would be great if the company would make one, these are now probably my favorite Nirvana discs I own for the sheer rawness of the recordings. Nirvana was a big fan of minimalism, and while I do not like every track, the Sage covers, Sappy, Oh The Guilt, the Here She Comes Now cover, and the White Lace And Strange cover (Proving once and for all that Cobain could actually play guitar), are some of my favorite Nirvana tracks ever.

and rarities all mastered in high-quality sound. most of these tracks were
only available on the Outcesticide releases in the '90s (with poor sound quality and terribly overpriced). at the time, this is the only access we
had to any Nirvana material of this type. most of us could not get enough of this band back in the day, so we would pay whatever we had to get it.
the first three discs are a collection of live, b-side and rare tracks in chronological order (for the most part) and the fourth disc is a DVD of
the band in December 1988 (with former drummer Chad Channing) practicing
at Chris Novoselic's house (bet his mother wasn't happy) with a Sub Pop video of "In Bloom" and other greatness. i have owned this for over two
years now, and at least one of these discs rarely ever leave my CD changer. very enjoyable. if you're even a moderate fan, get this, it is worth it !!!

Originally intended as a stopgap record following the massive success of Nirvana's Nevermind, the archival Incesticide album has taken on an added significance in light of subsequent events. Consisting of outtakes, demos, non-album singles, and live BBC sessions, it's a fascinating if less-than-truly essential listening experience. Highlights include the rip-roaring childhood memoir "Sliver" and its caustic companion (from a pre-Nevermind single) "Dive." There's also a brilliant cover of the Vaselines' "Molly's Lips." Particularly harrowing, however, are Kurt Cobain's liner notes, which at times sound eerily like his suicide note, deriding the fame and money that came upon him like a tsunami, and ultimately wiped him out. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

You know it. With the lights out, it's less dangerous. These lullaby renditions of Nirvana's best-loved songs turn the volume way down, while turning up the dreaminess of their pop hooks. In many ways, this album echoes the simple pleasures and innocence of infancy and childhood. Childish tra-la-la's tempered the distortion of Nirvana's own songs. Chimes, glockenspiels and other gentle instruments temper Nirvana's wild spirit for your little one. "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" Smells like nap time.Customer Reviews:

When it first appeared, Bleach seemed like a tuneful approximation of what grunge rock in the Northwest United States was supposed to sound like--gruff, enraged, sometimes tuneful, sometimes silly. Singer Kurt Cobain had the pipes to belt out such power trash as "Mr. Moustache" and the Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz," but considering the sheer volume of frustrated tuneage coming out of Seattle in 1989, it was easy to miss Bleach's subtler textures. In retrospect, "Negative Creep" and "About a Girl" are the obvious standouts that point toward the strum and bang attack that would catapult Nevermind to the top of the charts. But this is also a band without drummer Dave Grohl; his predecessor, Chad Channing (and also the Melvins' Dale Crover), while competent, is no Grohl. Producer Jack Endino gave this album the best sound $600 could buy. --Rob O'ConnorAlbum Description

Bleach.......2007-04-12
Nirvana's realt debut, yes there was a band before the over hyped Nevermind. Bleach is a phenomonal album, it's Nirvana at their most honest and pure, not to mention raw. This is their most true to punk album, really the heart and soul of what would become grunge. This along with the earliest albums by Soundgarden and Alice In Chains debut Facelift and the Mudhoney albums were the real start of grunge as a respectable genre.
Here on Bleach it is clearly not the classic lineup that made the band famous. Dave Growl is not on drums, Chad Channing is, and Kurt Cobain is not the only guitar player. No at the time the band also had Jason Everman to play lead which is why the guitar playing on this album is better then the rest of the other Nirvana albums because Kurt does not play lead here, just ryhthm like is is good at. While this album much like the lineup are not that famous it is truly a classic and gave us some of the most memorable songs of the bands short lived career.
'Blew' 'About A Girl' 'Negative Creep' Mr. Moustache' and 'Downer' are all NIrvana classics. 'Negative Creep' actually inspired Slash to form Velvet Revolver. 'About A Girl' has really become a radio staple since Cobains death, and has really just become an all around rock n' roll classic. lesser famous songs like 'Paper Cut' 'Big Cheese' and 'Love Buzz' are also great songs, actually some of the best on the album.
Kurts vocals are very raw here and much more personal. On 'School' you can here he is really singing about something he is passioned about. Because the production on the album is horrible compared to Nevermind and In Utero the band sounds more authentic and personal. This album is by far the best Nirvana album. All of the bands albums, this, Nevermind, In Utero, and even the rarities Incesticide all do not contain one bad song, but this album has the best songs. This was when Cobain wasnt whigging out about the pressures of fame or what ever his personal crisis, and he wasnt totally currupt on drugs so his mind was under control of what ever he was on at a given time. This is the most true to blue album of what Nirvana really was, even Cobain said they completly changed and sold out after this album. So if you want a real Nirvana album, and a real poetic experince from Cobain, then this is the way to go.
So much heavier than expected... 18 years later!.......2007-01-25

Euphoria is wearing off.......2007-03-28
I saw them a few more times, and they were still pretty entertaining, but it was becoming clearer to me that the appeal was in the novelty of their appearance and the joyous presentation they gave onstage.
I bought this CD, and now, I think, I'm probably done buying Polyphonic Spree CDs. Kurt Cobain is turning over in his grave, and I'm not feeling so good myself.

Album Description
Between the worlds of awake and sleep are welcoming inns and cafes where travelers can rest and acclimatize. At such places, wayfarers often connect with a wise one or simply bask in the music of the spheres before continuing on their way. Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Karunesh serves exquisite fare at Nirvana Cafe. Melodic rhythms artfully and at times spiritedly blended with an array of flutes, strings, piano, keyboards and percussion. On guitar, guest artist Govi conjures the language of desire, mystery and joy. Stop by for a sip of cosmic nectar.Customer Reviews:
Nirvana Cafe Review.......2007-01-31
This is MUSIC.......2006-03-30
I really wish Karunesh could read this. If he can, I love his music because it is so filled with love and compassion and passion. the former Passion and life that was so clear in "Global Spirit" seemed a little bit lost or umimplemented in "Zen Breakfast" Perhaps because he was going to another stage of life and self discovery. However, it is once back again in "Nirvana Cafe." I must confess, though, that I have only heard these three albums from Karunesh.
Karunesh, Please keep up the great work. You have helped me and many others, I believe.
