Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto

I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.

Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16

I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.

a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11

O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").

Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.

Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21

I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.

Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Lovely mix of world beat and electronica.......2005-10-16

This album is a mixture of world beat including asian, indian and middle eastern rhythms and melodies, with an electronica feel. It is in the same vein, but softer than Dum Dum Project's mix of indian chants. I highly recommend it for meditation or yoga, but also just to relax while studying for a test or having to deal with any stressor. It is not sticky sweet, or cloyingly annoy as something like Enya (not all songs, but some) can be...You won't go use this for aerobics or running, so if you are looking for more up beat electronica with world sounds you should try the new Reboot- Music for the next generation from Om Records. Benefits from both CDs also go to charity, so that's bonus. For what this music is intended, i.e. lounge type chill with a world beat influence, it does an excellent job, and I highly recommend it.

I used this CD for my Yoga class last week and loved it. I want to let you know that this is the same CD that Yoga Fit sells as Zen Cafe - Dessert. At least this way you can listen to a sample before buying. It flows wonderfully and is a joy to listen to. I highly recommened it for anyone wanting to chill or use it for teaching yoga classes.

I just recently got my hands on the latest installment of Sequoia Groove's Buddha Lounge series and it is even better than the previous releases in the series. Absolutely phenomenal ! It has many of my favorite artists along side some fantastic new European artists that I continue to discover through this series. I particulary enjoyed and recommend Nasser Kilada's sensuous middle-eastern number "Tarnima" , Alcyone's up-beat "Velvet Sutra, and David Gordon's cool and fluid "Bodhisattvas" which is a real departure from what I have heard from him in the past.
Buddha-Lounge 3 takes me to an exotically hip, down-tempo place that is just our of this world !

The Europe album I love to hate.......2007-07-11

Out of This World, Europe's 1998 follow-up to their smash hit The Final Countdown, is one of those albums I love to hate. It's almost as if the band saw how much their sales increased after softening both their image and their music for The Final Countdown and figured they'd do even better with an even slicker, pop-oriented approach.

Out of This World is a bright, shiny album that is utterly devoid of anything remotely resembling meaning. No ninjas or Indians this time around, only a dozen songs about love, rocking, love, rocking some more, love, and um, an airplane (were they trying to score a spot on the Iron Eagle soundtrack?). This album is literally drenched in keyboards too, and with John Norum out of the band the guitar work is just not enough to offset all of the synths.

The thing is; I actually enjoy the album quite a bit. The songs are catchy as hell, and I have to admit that Europe is a much better AOR/melodic rock band than they ever were when they played metal. I just wish they hadn't made this album quite so slick and desperately radio friendly. If you listen to their next album - Prisoners in Paradise - you can hear the band finally finding the perfect balance between rock and pop. Oh well, better late than never.

Europe's Winning Streak Continues.......2006-11-19

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN was an album with serious lyrics married to a slick musical background. On OUT OF THIS WORLD, the lyrics are just as serious, but the music is rawer, featuring more guitars and fewer keyboards. Ron Nevison produced this one, and his expertise shows in the way the CD sounds and flows. The ballads are harder-edged this time around, as are the rockers. Like its predecessor, as well as its followup, PRISONERS IN PARADISE, OUT OF THIS WORLD proves that Kansas-style prog and Ted Nugent metal can coexist successfully in the right hands.

Amazing 80's rock record.......2006-10-05

This is just a plainly underrated record. True, it could have used a little less production (maybe that should take one star from the rating but...), but the songs are, for the most part, amazing. Tempest's voice is at its peak, and Marcello's fretwork is amazing. His blend of melody and shredding in the tasty, finely-honed solos is something not to miss for any guitar fan. I wonder how the record would have sounded, had Nevison (producer) given a rawer edge (and a little bit more space) to Marcello's guitar. The rest of the band sounds pretty tight...although drums are a bit dull at some moments (again, blame it on Nevison!).
Being a long time fan (or "old" Europe and now of their new sound as well), I have to say that OOTW ranks among their best song-collection, if not the best.
For those into 80's melodic hard rock, this is a must. For those not into the '80s sound, check out 2004 Start from the Dark and, soon, 2006 Secret Society.

One of the finest from the 80's.......2006-07-30

You'll find yourself singing out loud all of the songs (if you're an 80's rock fan) . They are all incredibly well written, with smart lyrics. Plus, Kee Marcello will blow your mind with some stunning and creative guitar performance (and consider I'm an Yngwie Malmsteen fan). BUY IT NOW!

I used to have a cassette tape of this album in 1989 or 90 when I was still a student. The first time I heard "Ready or not", I had no idea what was happening. Marcello's playing sounded like some synthesized stuff. After Hendrix and Jimmy Page, It was too clean, too neat and too fast for any human to play on the guitar.

I won't waste words describing all the songs, people have done that before me. I liked almost every song on this album except for "tomorrow" and "coast to coast". Of all the slow ones, "open your heart" appealed to me, it's got a lovely alternating slow-fast pace which gives it that lovely flavour. To me, this album is even better than Final countdown, frankly I got sick of that song being played over and over again.

This album drove me to purchase my first Boss heavy metal distortion stomp box for my guitar to experiment with the awesome world of distorted guitar.

I really enjoyed this collection of tracks from some of the top didgeridoo players in the world. There is a nice variety of styles and approachs to using the ancient instrument in modern and sometimes not so modern ways. I think in many ways, this CD would be an excellent introduction to the didgeridoo for those curious about it's use in contemporary music.

What a great fusion of a variety of instruements and musical styles. Every track is great. This is the best cd I have bought in along while. Drums, sax, flute, didgeriedo and others to make a mesmerising collection of world music. You won't find music like this on popular radio. Can't say enough about this great collection of music.

One of the best motion picture soundtracks ever!.......2006-10-09

I loved the original SAW movie and enjoyed the music score and the atmosphere the music throughout the movie portrayed. This album release is a monumental record produced and mixed by Charlie Clouser (Ex N-I-N). There is not a song on this album that is bad or not worth being on this release.

'Sturm' is a song created by Front Line Assembly released specifically for this movie and the song is a perfect opener. The song is purely industrial and features the best of what FLA offers, the driving industrial beat with hard hitting nasal base lyrics.

'Bite The Hand that Bleeds' is a softer industraial/dark theme song by the kings of future metal - Fear Factory who I am a big fan of. In the DVD's special features, this song came with its own music video taking bits from the actual movie.

The other bands in this album I have not heard of but the songs were good, some more harder in sounding than others but worth the listen. What was the winning part to this album was the movie score by Charlie Clouser.

I have to agree with other prior reveiwers are say the best two songs of this album are 'Hello Zepp' and 'Zepp Overture'. Both songs are genious and great sounding. I have Hello Zepp on a website entry page song. It is one of the best songs I have ever listened to.

I assure anyone who is a fan of Saw, you will enjoy this album immensely and take alot out of it. I am simply in awe of this block-buster album.

Atmosphere........2005-12-14

What makes this album worth 5 stars? That may be one of the questions you find yourself asking. I'll tell you why. During the commentary for the Saw dvd Leigh Whannell (who played Adam and wrote the movie) said he felt the movie had a gritty, muddy and rusty feel to it. I agree. So, he wanted to find somebody to do a score and bands that would give off that feel. Charlie Clouser (ex-nin) does a wonderful job here. So, he brings in bands such as Fear Factory and Pitbull Daycare (I have spoken with their drummer, he is a really nice guy.) I prefer Black Metal and Death Metal over industrial. However, I love this soundtrack. I have not been able to take it out of my walkman since getting it. First, the atmosphere Charlie Clouser gives off, is right on the money and I am highly impressed. Also, I am not the biggest fan of Fear Factory but their song is quite good as well. However, my favorite song is "Hello Zepp" the epic song, in while the final few minutes (most shocking as well)of the movie are played out. That song is worth the money alone. So, even though you may not enjoy industrial, this is still worth giving a try. Enjoy

I bought this album for the score of the movie, not the bands featured on the album. Charlie Clouser did a great job, a chilling and awesome score. My favorite track is "hello zep" which was my main motivation of getting this album. Some of the band tracks here are actually pretty good, but when it comes to a soundtrack album, I prefer the score. Good album overall. Can't wait for the Saw 2 soundtrack.

I'm kinda divided with this disk-I really, really liked the score itself, that is the stuff performed by Charlie Clouser, especially the effectively bleak "Hello Adam" and the great "Hello Zepp" and "Zepp Overature". Unfortunately, the heavy metal/rock/whatever--*vomits*. I personally hate that type of music. The disk is definitely worth the price, but just be aware that there are some really awful metal tracks amongst the otherwise very good score.

OKay. I was shocked that only 8 other people had reviewed this great soundtrack. But that's besides the point. Charlie Clouser did a fine job with the original score, especially "Hello, Zepp" and "Zepp Overature". The tracks by the bands were good, some were definately better than others. "You Make Me Feel So Dead" by Pitbull Daycare is by far my favorite track and "Wonderful World" by the Psycho Pumps is equally awsome. "Bite the Hand That Bleeds" by Fear Factory SUCKS ASS!!!! I was extremely dissapointed when that was the only video on the DVD. Oh well, I'm also dissapointed that I can't for the life of me find anything else on the Psycho Pumps. It's as if they only did this one song for this album. That's kinda sad if it's true. Anyway, if you were a fan of the film, get this.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Masterpiece ... again.......2005-06-14

5 years after the "Masquerade Overture" which was a superb album comes this "Not of this world" album which really entitles its name (in the good sense of course!)The music is still symphonic prog. There are still long tracks but several divided in parts. This is a concept album with several recurring music themes over the duration of the album.
This is very good stuff. The only criticism - if I dare...- is that sometimes some isolated parts are a little bit heavier than the usual Pendragon style. But do not get me wrong, there are also lots of Floydian moody sections.

This one is also a classic for me.

Another masterpiece for Pendragon.

All pieces are excellent again. It took 5 years to Pendragon since their "Masquerade Overture" album and the result is there. Again very symphonic melodic progressive rock music.

The songs have "catchy parts" but as part of long pieces often with multiple sections.
This album have some parts that are a little bit more "heavy" than the other preceding albums but also great moody floydy parts too...
A must have!

This is the first Pendragon album I have ever listened to. A dear friend bought me this album for Xmas (knowing that I am an "Arena" crazy whose keyboardist is Clive Nolan). After a few times listening to it, I fell in love with this album.
Just the last two songs are worth the money. But every single song is absolutely incredible! This album is a great prog work. Amazing songwriting, very dynamic, and well-structured music overall. I have nothing more to say than the other reviewers on this site. Just read them and you'll have enough info that will definitely convince you to buy this album.

OK the taste for the melodies:but what about the creativity?.......2003-01-05

Sorry I can't agree with the point of view of the other reviewers completely!! I keep on thinking of their most successful album of the eighties, "The jewel" (what a pity for the weak production!!)and naturally it's clear to all of us:that album was characterized by their most personal style, as it could be an example to emulate; instead afterwards they became a derivative band (emulating the melodies of Camel, expecially the guitar parts, and also those one more floyd-oriented, instead of looking for a more original sound and starting their own musical path). The present "Not of this world" is not an exception, as for the lacking of a real progression in the development of the themes (I think of their recent work dated 1996 "Masquerade Overture" and-despite of some ingenuosness-you could find a certain growth within)and in the choose of the melodies-flyod oriented- as well!! The lack of inspiration, expecially regarding the compositions by Nick Barret, can not make us change ideas ... if you compare the last works by Pendragon with those ones of Camel, you can understand what I mean ...OK I try to be honest and objective, every album by Camel makes a new present to whom is looking for cool surprises, unlike the last albums of Pendragon, which let me quite indifferent!!

Best prog work since the seventies..........2002-12-17

I like Pink Floyd, Genesis and Supertramp. I still listen to prog music now, but as far as I can remember, few current group gets close to the masterpieces of the 70s. Except Pendragon with this album. I've liked it from the start (which is rare) and I still adore it after fifty listenings... Every listen reveals other details, and musical depth that I had not perceived before... Other bands such as Arena, IQ, Flower kings, Spock's beard, are good but have not offered such a varied, inspired, star-lit, magical album ...

The Inimitable Miss Greenwood.......2007-05-29

I can confirm that while Porter originally tried to get Carol Channing and then Judy Holliday for the part of Juno, he was thrilled when Charlotte agreed to do the role - it was a big deal for her, as she was taking the New York stage for the first time since leaving Broadway in the late 1920's, and Porter worked with her at his house in Beverly Hills, making sure she was OK with the material. He wrote three new songs for her, interspersed throughout the rehearsal and tryout phases - "I Sleep Easier Now" was the last new song he wrote, with "Men, Men, Men" (as Charlotte called it) and "Nobody's Chasing Me" coming before that.

In my biography of Charlotte (just published this past April), I talk about OUT OF THIS WORLD's trials and troubles, and relate the confirmation I got from some of Charlotte's co-stars that she kept the show from closing within the week. It ran for over four months, and as George Gaynes (who played Jupiter) told me, "It was because of Greenwood."

Tbe best CD of this, and maybe the last........2006-02-20

Now is the perfect time to buy the CD of this.

Sony's transfer engineers used state-of-the-art restoration software to remove the roughness and surface noise from the originals, but (thankfully) they resisted the urge to tart-up the sound with artificial reverb, faux stereo, and thundering bass. This is by far the best-sounding CD of this ever released, and it may be the last.

The age of music ownership in America may be drawing to a close. Five years from now, this music may only be available by download, you may only be "borrowing" it, and it probably won't come with the the authentic cover art or the 16-page booklet.

If you take a little time ..........2005-11-09

...you may realize that this is some of Cole's finest music and wittiest lyrics. It takes a few listens for it to dawn on you. There is quite a gamut of emotion here as well. 'Use Your Imagination' and 'I Am Loved' are sensitive and beautiful songs. The numbers performed by Priscilla Gillette are often pointed out as comedic highpoints in the recording, but 'They Couldn't Compare To You' (William Redfield) will snare you into giggles with every listen. My favorite is Barbara Ashley's 'Where, Oh Where?' The song opens with a grand verse which hearkens back to forgotten times when men were noble and women were sweet. But my, what is she really singing about? Oh, how very funny and how naughty of Cole, like so many of these songs. I just love this recording so much. I find myself going back to it frequently, even more frequently than Kiss Me Kate.

OUT OF THIS WORLD features a catalogue of second-rate Cole Porter songs, the cast headed by comedienne extraordinaire Charlotte Greenwood. Greenwood was the show's main saving grace on Broadway, and on the cast album she operates in the same capacity. The rest of the cast is fine and stong (William Eythe, Priscilla Gillette, William Redfield, Barbara Ashley, George Jongeyans-Gaynes and David Burns), but none equal the sparkle and finesse that Greenwood possesses. Greenwood and the cast give the score more fanfare and credibility than it deserves, none of the songs could be counted among Cole Porter's finest (remarkably "From This Moment On" was dropped during tryouts), but numbers like "I Got Beauty", "I Sleep Easier Now" and "Nobody's Chasing Me" are turned into showstoppers thanks to Miss Greenwood. Sound quality is excellent for its 1950 vintage. For completists only.

An Almost Lost Porter Gem.......2003-02-22

The book was a mess, but the score is pure-Porter! From the first, the brassy overture more than hints at the humor that we are in store for. Mercury's introduction is a delight. Jupiter, his Father, turns his "I Jupiter Rex" into a football cheer. The "List" songs don't end---who would want them to! There are lovely love songs, but every time Greenwood starts singing, it's those humorous songs that remain in your mind. "When I Was Younger" and "Climb Up The Mountian" are really masterpieces. The musical themes and borrowings are everywhere. From Afro-American spirituals to Yale-inspired cheerleader lieder---this is one rich patch-work quilt of a show. And it has been revived! City Center's "Encores" series brought out a fine CD, several years ago---and a few daring colleges have staged this silly and very sexy show. Go for it, no Porterite will be disappointed.
