4 out of 5 stars High Energy Party Jazz.......2007-06-06

Here's a CD to get for your next party, particularly if your guests are unfamiliar with Kermit Ruffins. My introduction to his music came through a college buddy who has family in New Orleans and visits the city frequently, taking in its still vibrant music scene.
Well, since I like the trumpet-oriented jazz of Freddie Hubbard and Herb Alpert, I thought that perhaps I would enjoy Ruffins based on my friend's recommendation. And I do.
Live at Vaughan's is packed with high energy party jazz and although its a little jivey and parochial in places, its a CD that's easy to enjoy. My favorites are World On A String, Hide the Reefer, If You Want Me To Stay, the gorgeous instrumental Be Thankful For What You've Got. Those last two in particular show what Ruffins is capable of when he gets serious with his trumpet. Only the unnecessary introduction and the exceedingly lame O-O-H Child detract from making Live at Vaughan's a five-star effort. That last song is so jejune that no matter how valiantly Ruffins or anyone else tries to improve it, they are destined to fail.
I have always enjoyed New Orleans music as suited to certain times and places, but have never actually bought any until now. Kermit Ruffins shows ample talent here and I will certainly explore his music further. You don't necessarily have to be into New Orleans music or jazz in general to like this, you just have to like music in general. Check this CD out, you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Kermit Ruffins Goes All Out !!.......2007-04-09

This brand new, 2007 latest release from Kermit Ruffins shakes the floors. The 13 tracks cover the full spectrum of his talents with a live performance. If you like N.O. jazz you'll love this cd. His playing and the great recording really bring New Orleans jazz home. Try it. You'll enjoy every minute, over and over.

The Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet was already one of the best in modern jazz, but when they added Sonny Rollins to the fray in late 1955, it became a lineup for the ages. Basin Street, recorded in early 1956, marks the studio debut of Rollins with the band, and the result is a supercharged highlight of the postbop era. The three furiously paced standards that kick off the set feature superb blowing and crafty arrangements that offer spontaneous intros and rhythmic shifts. Of special note are the contributions of pianist Richie Powell, Bud's younger brother, who not only adds three excellent compositions (the intricate "Powell's Prances," the poignant "Time," and the irresistibly catchy "Gertrude's Bounce"), but also proves himself to be a standout soloist and accompanist. Of course, Brown's bright tone and remarkably fluid ideas are in full bloom as well. Sadly, the quintet would record only once more (Plus 4, issued under Rollins's name) before the June 1956 accident that claimed the lives of Brown and Powell. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars End of the line........2007-05-30

It's been quite a while since I've listened to this album, but the ensemble choruses and solos still ring in my ears--"Love Is a Splendored Thing" (hardly a jazz vehicle but it works), "I Remember April" (perhaps rivaled only by Erroll Garner's on "Concert by the Sea"), "Gertrude's Bounce" (one of their most inspired bebop tunes--part jingle bells, part operatic melodic expansiveness). Everybody's favorite trumpet player demonstrates why he deserves to be, and Rollins brings a new kind of power, energy, and playfulness to the group.

No doubt Sonny provided much more firepower for the group's live performances and loosened up things in the recording studio with his sportive, motivic playing. But Harold Land's precision playing and unfailing melodic logic made for a tighter ensemble sound and more consistent solos--which is the reason I'd give the edge to "Study in Brown." On the other hand, "More Study in Brown" includes another take of "I Remember April" from this same session with Rollins," a version that strikes me as superior to the master take heard here.

Not only was this the end of the string for Clifford, but it's probably the last recording by Max Roach to have a major impact or enduring significance.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-12-11

it's one thing to have a Musician on his way to becoming a All Time Great&it's another to team Up a Great Talent with a Fellow Great Talent&have there Souls Blend as one&leave such a strong mark&endless possiblitys of what could have been. nowadays artists Colab all the time with mixed results. but back in the day you put the best with the best and you got results such as this. the arrangements are top notch as well. Clifford Brown was the truth on Trumpet. he died so young but left a lasting impression. He was that Cat that Miles&Dizzy had to keep a extra pair of eyes&ears on. Max Roach has incredible timing on the Drums. His Rhythm&Timing are top notch. He has Groove in there&has nice solos on here. on Flossie Lou" at the 3:15 Mark Roach has some nice rolls going on. Sonny Rollins plays on here on the Sax. he has always had his own sound on the Sax. Richie Powell left his mark on the Piano Here. George Morrow on the Bass. i enjoy the Cole Porter Cover of "what is this thing called Love? &also Love is a many splended thing. this is the kind of album that pairs together Musicians that truly compliment one another really well. sadly we didn't get more, but this is some Great talent that is timeless.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly overrated..........2005-06-15

I have to say something that may be important to some people: ¨At basin street¨ is not a live recording, is just another studio recording. Now, about the music... this time Brown offers us gems like ¨Love Is a Many Splendored Thing¨ and ¨Powell's Prances¨ (I really like these tracks) but I can't understand why he included boring and uninspired song like ¨Time¨. I recommend you to start with Brown's materpiece: ¨Study in Brown¨

5 out of 5 stars Great, but not a live concert.......2003-03-23

I agree this is a great cd. But don't let the title fool you, this is not a live (concert) recording. But that makes it even beter-no crowd noise to spoil it!

5 out of 5 stars History was made with this recording........2002-10-25

This CD was recorded at a live concert. Clifford Brown, the young jazz trumpet sensation of his time, and soloist in this album, exceeds in his wonderfully melodic improvisations. This is definitely a great recording for anyone looking for some great music!

Peggy Lee may not have had the greatest pipes of her era, but few could equal her preternatural ability to underplay a song, finding nuance and new drama in even the most familiar material. This previously unreleased 1961 New York performance is not only ample evidence of that talent, but one of the most satisfying fixes of pure Peggy ever released. While previous Lee "live" recordings have been revealed to be largely fabrications, this treasure from the vaults offers up an intimate hour with the legend in all its unedited glory. It's a taut set, dotted with medleys that showcase Lee's jazzy charms and deceptively effortless ability to make each song her own, while delivering the hit "Fever" up as breezy, finger-snapping blues and casting Damn Yankees's "Heart" as loopy Cuban romp. If you need an introduction to the legend of Peggy Lee, this would be a lively, gratifying place to start. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Peggy Lee's only live recording, newly discovered........2005-02-28

Originally recorded on Feb. 8, 1961, the last night of Peggy Lee's show at Basin Street East, this is the only complete recording of a "pure," live performance by Peggy Lee--the entire show sung exactly as Peggy performed it, with every song included, warts and all. Lost for forty years in the Capitol Records vault, where it was mislabeled as a "backup" tape, it was finally discovered through the efforts of Cy Godfrey, Lee's attorney, and released in 2002.

And what it find it was! Here is Peggy, completely relaxed and joyfully interacting with her audience, at ease with her music, her orchestra, and her fans. Showing her range of styles, she moves from a slow, soft ballad like "The Second Time Around" to full-out wailing at the end of "The Most Beautiful Man in the World," and rock/swing/soul music in a Tribute to Ray Charles. In "I'm Gonna Go Fishin,'" which she wrote with Duke Ellington, Peggy is looser and more comfortable than on her formal recordings, and one can hear her mugging with her audience through the changes in her voice, as she sings with the full orchestra. In "You've Gotta Have Heart," she sings a section in a pseudo-Spanish accent, and in her own song, "Love Being Here With You," she even jokingly interrupts herself to ask, "I wonder what I meant by that line."

Here is Peggy Lee as you have never heard her before, an extraordinary find for the Peggy Lee fan. This is not to say there are no problems. At times, she wanders too far from her microphones, and the lyrics and her patter become almost impossible to hear; on other occasions, when she dramatically whispers her lyrics, she misses an occasional note. Still, her timing, her creative interpretations, and her ability to handle almost any tempo are at their peak here. This is a fantastic album for the Peggy Lee fan--the only opportunity ever to her "live." Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Live Recording.......2004-06-18

I saw Peggy Lee four times in person (once at Carnegie Hall, three time in Cental Park), so know how good she could be in person. Still I was unprepared for the great jazz performance captured on this live CD and released only after Lee's death.
True Lee misses some notes and not everything is perfect, but
I have not heard Peggy swing like this before on a recording. Clearly, the live setting at the peak of her career brought out the very best in one of the greatest singers of the last century.

5 out of 5 stars Best one, yet!.......2002-11-30

Having collected Peggy Lee records and discs nearly 50 years, I think this one is the best, yet.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding !!!.......2002-11-13

I have owned a previous incarnation of this recording for several years ---- the one where the tracks were recorded in the studio, but with applause added later to create a "live" effect. I wondered whether a true, live recording would be significantly different --- and worth the expense. I can say without hesitation that I am extremely grateful I took the risk. This current CD is something very special and very wonderful. It contains a vitality and immediacy that validates the trouble and effort that goes into the creation of truly live recording. Apparently an audience brought more out of Ms. Lee than a studio microphone could. She seems to invest more of herself here than she ever did in a recording booth. This album can legitimately be called a "must have" for any Peggy Lee fan.

5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating, Tantalizing, Mesmerizing Miss Lee!.......2002-07-23

There aren't enough adjectives to let you know how wonderful this issue is. At last, the "real" live performance of Miss Peggy Lee at the NYC jazz club, Basin Street East, is available for all of us die-hards! (The familiar Capitol release is botched-up & partially studio "fixed".) Here is Peggy at the peak of her artistry, doing her usual spellbinding. Standout tunes are a mightily swinging "The Most Beautiful Man In the World" and the gorgeous "I've Never Left Your Arms". Marvelous liner notes by the esteemed jazz critic Nat Hentoff & rare photos make this package totally irresistable to all of us who regard Peggy Lee as the best popular singer of the 20th Century. A real treasure and not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars what is this thing?.......2004-09-29

This is an all-star cast: max roach, clifford brown, sonny rollins, and surprisingly enough, it is richie powell on the piano whom I appreciate the most. I guess I don't hear much of him, so I find his style fresh. I believe he and Clifford passed away shortly after this in a car accident, which is so sad. This would have been a quintet for the ages had they not met this fate.
This version of the cd has two 'breakdowns', pieces that are interrupted because someone goofed. It does not add much though.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music, But Turn It Waay Up..........2004-01-27

The remastered edition of "At Basin Street" is an improvement over the previous cd incarnation, with the instruments sounding clear and crisp. The only trouble is, the recording levels were really low and on my (rather cheap) stereo, I find myself having to crank the volume up about 4 levels higher just to hear the cd at a normal level. It's still a fine album, though. "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "I'll Remember April" are the standout tunes, with great contributions from drummer Max Roach and Tenor man Sonny Rollins, whose solo break in "April" is the best riff on the entire album. Pianist Richie Powell had great touch and showed great promise. It's so tragic that he and Brownie had to die so young. I'll give the music five stars, but an overrall rating of four because of the recording sounding too quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Brown & Roach Could Do No Wrong:.......2002-08-07

The Clifford Brown / Max Roach Quartett could do no wrong; all of their works together gave one the impression of a perfect match, each one with so much talent; they enhanced each other. By the time this album was released, it was like they had been together forever, and you could not wait to hear what else they were going to do. Basin Street, in it's relaxed form, brings out the basic quality of the whole group, with Brown & Roach at their best.

      Album Description

This rare performance was recorded by Goodman himself during a July 1954 engagement at the Basin Street East jazz club, in New York. This particular sextet had been formed for a tour (which was later cancelled) with Louis Armstrong's All Stars in the spring of 1953. Although all of the band members were superb musicians, the most interesting pairing here is that of Benny and trumpeter Charlie Shavers. A veteran of the Swing era, Shavers had extensive experience with both small groups (he had been a soloist and arranger for the renowned John Kirby Sextet) and big bands (as a featured soloist with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra). This superb performance contains a lot of wonderful music by an otherwise unrecorded Benny Goodman Sextet. 19 tracks including 'After You've Gone', 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street', 'Our Love Is Here To Stay', 'I Found A New Baby' and more. Jazz Factory. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Duke in NY in the 60s; and a comment on Lush Life.......2001-02-13

Duke Ellington experienced a rebirth of his popularity in the 1960s after a success at the Newport Jazz Festival. He took his band back on the grueling tour around the country, only rarely to play New York. This recording was done live at Basin Street East, as Duke's old stomping grounds, The Cotton Club, wasn't doing much at this time. I have no idea why this CD is so hard to find other than it was produced by Music and Arts Programs of American, Inc. rather than a regular record label. But, but all means get your hands on it--it swings. The concert was broadcast live at the time and the recording equipment was top notch. What you have here is one of the best Ellington albums I've ever heard. You get a real feeling for what an Ellington concert would have been like.

Between pieces William B. Williams, a white disc-jocky, "banters" with Duke about the music. This got on my nervers and Williams seems, to me, pretty condescending at times. . .at one point he acknowledges the Duke as "quite a talent" as an arranger. There is also an awards ceremony in the middle of the album where the Duke is presented with awards from Jazz Magazine.

Strayhorn had been composing and arranging with Duke for nearly 30 years at that point and it is it is the single solo by Billy Strayhorn I wanted to comment on. Many of the tunes on the disc are Strayhorn originals, "Take the 'A' Train," "Passion Flower" and on and on. "Lush Life" is one that was never associated with Duke Ellington directly. "Lush Life" was first composed in 1933, about 7 years before Strayhorn ever met Duke. During their long association Strayhorn often played the tune with the small Ellington groups, but the Ellington big band never, to my knowledge, recorded it. There is a report that it was on a 1949 Carnagie Hall recording, but I've never tracked that recording down. Ellington liked the tune, but didn't see how it could be arranged to meet his musical perspective. In this era of Ellingtonian you often see Ellington tribute albums and CDs with "Lush Life" on it. It is interesting that a tune that was not composed or played by Ellington is so closely associated with him. On this disc, made only a few years before Strayhorn's death from cancer, it is a sad solo by Strayhorn without the band that we hear.

I often wonder what "Lush Life" would have been like had Ellington chosen to put his skills as an arranger to it. Strayhorn himself was very critical of recordings of the piece, it is said he called Nat Cole and swore at him when he heard Cole's version. Strayhorn himself recorded it a few times and the piece was recorded by John Coltrane a dozen times. Whatever the case, there are two reasons to get this disc; it is one of the best live Ellington swing albums every recorded and it has probably the last time Strayhorn recorded "Lush Life," it doesn't get much better than that.
