It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael RossAmazon.com

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.
Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.
The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr.Amazon.com

From the start of his intermittent side career as a jazz pianist, esteemed conductor and composer Andre Previn has shown more feeling for the form than most classical artists who cross over. Going beyond a recreational involvement in improvised music, he has deepened his playing since skimming stylistic surfaces on his bestselling My Fair Lady album of nearly 50 years ago. Now 78, he gives us what may be his most satisfying jazz recording in Alone: Ballads for Solo Piano. The solo format allows him to reflect his debt to piano masters including Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, and Bud Powell in ways his work with trios and combos hasn't, while showing off his super-refined lyrical touch with its sophisticated sense of color. With its scampering stride touches, "What is This Thing Called Love" is the most upbeat of ballads, while "I Can't Get Started" is given a more gentle awakening. With the exception of "Darkest Before the Dawn," an obscure tune Previn wrote with Johnny Mercer for the British musical The Good Companions, the album touches familiar bases: Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rogers & Hart, Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Hoagy Carmichael. But invested with personal meaning, this is no typical standards survey. It lives up to the challenge of making your hear these songs in a new light. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's "New York New York," focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

Let's be Frank about This.....................2007-05-16
This man is an absolutely incredible and astounding vocalist. Perhaps, one of the very best in the 20th century. You just have to listen to him, the cool smooth sometimes swingin', sometimes the serious and somber timbre of his vocals. What makes him so special anyway? It's how he phrases the lyrics, how his soft blanket of enunciation and knowing the right emphasis to use creates a very high standard that others hope to achieve. It is hard to define Sinatra so that you'll understand. But, if you're not too familiar with him, then this c.d. will help make it clear. It's everything: his vocals, the band sound, the arrangements. This is so fine- and so very classic and quality. Let's pour a drink, relax, and listen to Sinatra. So easy and wonderful on the ears.
Of course, as you would expect, this C.D. is filled with songs by the greatest songwriters of all time. Cole Porter,Johnny Mercer, Rodgers, Cahn-VanHeusen, Sondheim. We have exceptional compositions here. Plus Frank's later hits, "Strangers In the Night", "Summer Wind", "My Way", "New York, New York". The c.d. is a joy with great renditions by Frank. I especially like "The Best is Yet to Come" with Count Basie and his Orchestra. So cool, so jazzy, so Frank.
This is a great starting point by merely scratches the surface of his excellence. I suggest getting the box set of "The Capitol Years". That is his essential classic phase with arrangements by Nelson Riddle. You just can't get any finer music. Take my word. And even then, there is much more about him to discover. The best IS yet to come.
In conclusion, your Metamorpho, from time to time, needs to forget the rat race out there. Frank is a refreshing oasis of sound in sometimes a desolate music scene. He will always be this - for the ages. His legacy is cemented and will always be the best as more generations discover him.
Jazzy, suave, essential - this is Sinatra.
Very high marks for this one.
Now you must excuse me- Frank calls and a martini awaits me.

A great, comprehensive collection of Sinatra's most popular Reprise tracks, and worth having for any number of reasons, Very Best Of features tons of familiar hits--but requires a caveat for casual Sinatra fans. When Sinatra formed Reprise, he began to re-record many of the sides he'd released on Capitol, in an attempt to transfer his catalog to the new label. It was a smooth move, but his re-recorded versions seldom replaced the originals in the way he'd hoped. And many of the familiar songs here are Capitol remakes. It'd be a task to compare the track listing here with that of the Capitol Years set, but if you want to get serious about your Sinatra, that's the way to go. If you're just a music fan, this is a gem. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:

His Very Best Indeed........2007-05-06
There are many collections that offer a generous selection of Sinatra's best work from this time period. There's the single disc "The Very Good Years", which is the album that turned me on to The Voice when I was just a toddler. Then there's the excellent 4 cd "The Reprise Collection", which is a bit pricey but entirely worthwhile. Finally, there's the mammoth "The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings", which clocks in at an astonishing 20 discs and costs about $ 300.00. Fantastic music, no doubt, but a bit overwhelming, especially for a beginner.
For those looking for a solid middle ground between these collections, look no further than the 2 cd, 40 song collection "The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra". Though it heavily relies on re-recordings of classics from his Capitol era, "The Very Best Of Frank Sinatra" still has a great amount of original material that Sinatra recorded at the label, and the sound quality is fantastic.
Disc 1 is of higher artistic quality, though in all honesty, the one that is less enjoyable. Not that it's bad. Here, you get excellent renderings of standards such as "Stardust", "A Foggy Day", a touching "The Girl Next Door", a swingin' "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Let's Face The Music And Dance". In addition to that you do get the usual timeless Sinatra classics, including "The Way You Look Tonight", "Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)", "My Kind Of Town" and "The Best Is Yet To Come".
Three classic songs from the Capitol years have been included in their Reprise versions. First is an updating of "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning", which falters in comparison to the original. The original was sparse, raw and dripping with sadness. This version has a fuller arrangement, is more "polished", and there isn't a sense of pure sadness in Frank's voice the way there is on the original.
Next comes "I've Got You Under My Skin", which is much livelier and grander than the rigid and stiff 1956 arrangement. The Capitol version was restrained and Frank sounded bored. This version is looser and Frank's clearly having fun on this one. Though the 1966 live version with Count Basie is the definitive performance of the song, this is probably the best studio recording Frank did of this Cole Porter standard. Next comes a 1965 reworking of "Come Fly With Me" that easily triumphs over the original. Like the original version of "I've Got You Under My Skin", the original was too laid back and stiff. Sinatra swings this one hard, and it makes for the definitive version.
Disc 2 is the artistically weaker but the more enjoyable. After starting off with his classic "It Was A Very Good Year", the disc tends to lean heavily on re-recordings. Some of them work (the versions of "Witchcraft" and "(Love Is) The Tender Trap" run circles around their Capitol predecessors), others are nice for comparison ("Young At Heart" and "All The Way" don't touch their originals but are still serviceable renditions), while others fall flat ("All Or Nothing At All" is too over the top and should've been featured in the up-tempo version from 1966).
Of course, the usual hits are here, including "Strangers In The Night", "The Summer Wind" and signature hits "My Way" and "New York, New York". Also included are the little known Antonio Carlos Jobim collaboration "Wave" and his classic duet with daughter Nancy, "Somethin' Stupid".
Overall, this is a fantastic introduction for Sinatra beginners who want the cream of the crop of his later years. It's reasonably priced, easy find, has great packaging and liner notes, and has a fantastic selection of songs. A must-have for fans of who I deem God's Gift To Music.

Few would dispute that Frank Sinatra was one of the greatest popular singers of the 20th century. His voice had distinct power and majesty, whether he was belting out a swinging dance number or softly crooning a tender ballad. When he was at his height, no one could touch him, and the songs collected on Classic Sinatra showcase the range of his talent. Recorded during his memorable run for Capitol Records in the 1950s, the songs here are more than just his best, they're often the definitive recordings: "I Get a Kick out of You," "Young at Heart," "Witchcraft," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "In the Wee Small Hours," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Like almost everything Sinatra recorded during this period, there isn't a dud to be found, which makes Classic Sinatra a perfect introduction to the work of this truly great talent. --Robert BurrowAmazon.com

An Ideal Single Disc Collection Of Sinatra's Peak Years........2007-05-03
Now, like most hardcore Ol' Blue Eyes fans, I consider Sinatra's best period as an artist to be his tenure at Capitol Records. And like most fans, I consider the best introduction to that period is the three cd boxed set "The Capitol Years". However, that set may or may not be too pricey for beginning fans.
Now, those with that dilemma can hold themselves over with the 20 song, single disc "Classic Sinatra". Though nowhere near as concise the 75 song "The Capitol Years", "Classic Sinatra" boasts 20 songs that define Sinatra's style and artistic ability also boasts superior sound quality.
Among the clasics here are songs like "I've Got The World On A String", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Witchcraft", "All The Way", "Come Fly With Me" and "Nice N' Easy", all songs which are instantly indentifiable with Sinatra because unmatchable ability to deliver a song. This goes evne moreso for songs like "My Funny Valentine" and "Someone To Watch Over Me", songs done contless times by numerous artists, yet it's always Sinatra's versions that are named definitive.
So while not as concise as its three disc predecssor, "Classic Sinatra" is still a solid introduction to The Greatest Artist Of All Time in his peak years.
Like a 45rpm disc.......2007-03-23
My introduction into the world of Frank Sinatra........2007-01-23
This was my first Sinatra album..........2006-12-28
I discovered Sinatra when a friend of mine, who is absolutely into Jazz, told me that Sinatra is his favourite singer of all times. And I thoug: "If me and Teo have more or less the same tastes in Jazz, I should try Sinatra". And this album was the perfect introduction to him.
So no doubts, if you are new to Sinatra, buy this album and you will so shocked that, like me, you won't stop buying more CDs by Him.
And I have to point something finally: I have read many of the reviews in amazon, recomending other albums or periods of 'ol blue eyes, but almost no one says nothing about his columbia years. I own the 4-CD box set "The best of the Columbia years (1943-1952)" and I think it is absolutely amazing. It contents mainly ballads, but Sinatra is in perfect voice, the arrangements by Axel Stordahl are fantastic, and the sound quality is quite good. Now I am listening to "The house I live in" and singing ...that's America to meeeee.
so BUY THIS ALBUM and you will changed forever!!!

A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin EscottCustomer Reviews:

Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by herself and new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple "Love Me Like a Man" (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, "Narrow Daylight," "Abandoned Masquerade," and "I'm Coming Through" all deal with love and loss. "Departure Bay," a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

Modern Jazz, Modern Songs - The very best of Diana Krall.......2007-02-27
As a jazz musician and composer there's nothing more stifling than the idea that the genre stopped 40 years ago. Its funny to hear comments like the songs on this new album are just "pop music", when in the golden years of jazz, it *was* popular music! Jazz artists through the decades have always taken the best current songs and made them their own, even in the bop years.
Sure, there's lots of modern jazz that is "smooth" pap, not worthy of the name, but this is the opposite of that trend. For all of the complaints this album has a traditional acoustic jazz combo orchestration and sound, but with an energy and push that is lacking in her other albums.
