It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

Simply addictive!.......2007-07-12
This is her best album!
Her voice is unbelievable, the delivery is amazing and the lyrics are stunning!
Haunting sounds.......2007-07-06
For 3 months, my Norah Jones CDs have taken over my car stereo. This woman is very talented!
The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27
This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.
Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20
I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.
I'd Love To...........2007-06-05
Okay, she's not quite a standards specialist, but a lot of people think Norah Jones is well on her way to setting some new standards of her own.
The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.
Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.
The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

Norah Jones blew everybody away with her jazzy, country-tinged, Grammy-winning debut CD, Come Away with Me. On this recording, Jones doesn't mess with her trademark formula. Under Arif Mardin's cozy coproduction, Jones is supported by her writing partners, her Handsome Band, and some special guests (country legend Dolly Parton, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson of the Band, and jazz drummer Brian Blade, to name a few). Jones's Texas-twanged vocals and her sparse acoustic and electric Wurlitzer piano lines enliven the CD's 13 tracks, from the light and lively single "Sunrise" to Tom Waits's "The Long Way Home" and the bouncy duet with Parton, "Creepin' In." Jones's soul-baring piano/vocal rendition of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia," retitled "Don't Miss You at All," proves she's a true Blue Note artist with unlimited potential. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Good, but not the best.......2007-06-17
"Feels Like Home" is a welcome addition to any fans' collection. I gave it four stars simply because I did not think it was as good as her first or third CD. If you like Norah's other work you will like this CD, but if you don't have extra money or you would like to introduce yourself to Norah Jones purchase "Come Away With Me" or "Not Too Late" instead.

Kenny Burrell turned 75 on July 31, 2006. That night he finished a five-day run at Yoshi's in Oakland and then the next day played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra in Santa Cruz. This CD commemorates the occasion with performances from both nights, presenting Burrell's sparkling guitar in settings that range from an intimate trio to fronting Wilson's 17 -piece band. The material reflects Burrell's long career and broad associations. Among the small group tracks, there's a beautiful quartet sequence of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," J.J. Johnson's "Lament," and Miles Davis's "All Blues," each demonstrating Burrell's consummate lyricism and absolute mastery of the mainstream modern. The big-band tracks pick up on associations with Duke Ellington, including the elegant "Sophisticated Lady" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," with the 88-year-old Wilson providing a sparkling foundation that has Burrell and company soaring. Best of all is the extended "A Night in Tunisia" with a septet that has organist Joey DeFrancesco and flutist Hubert Laws. --Stuart Broomer

With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart O Brother Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, the album is noteworthy not only for its roomy, atmospheric sound and experimental touches, but also for its improvised-in-the-studio approach. Working with innovative Burnett regulars including keyboardist (and co-producer) Keefus Ciancia, guitarist Marc Ribot, and drumming legend Jim Keltner, Wilson delivers such offbeat delights as "Going to Mexico," a dreamlike, funk-tinged tune built on a sample of "Hey Pocky A-Way" by New Orleans' Wild Tchoupitoulas. Eschewing the well-known pop tunes she usually covers, she lends her huskily seductive vocals to Jakob Dylan's wistful "Closer to You" and Burnett's dark "Strike a Match," to which she claimed co-ownership by changing the time signature and adding a lyric. The inspired contributors also include programmer and bassist Mike Elizondo (producer of Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine") and guitarist Colin Linden, who wails on a gripping extended reading of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Easy Rider" and duets with Wilson on the cowboy classic "Red River Valley," which eloquently sums up her ability to breathe jazz meaning into anything she chooses. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Pick One..........2007-05-01
Funky, sultry, bluesy, sexy, mellow, haunting, hypnotic, cool...this CD has it all and then some. From the opening beats of Go To Mexico to the final chords of Tarot, this is an incredibly hot disc. Wilson has certainly hooked me with her absolutely gorgeous vocals, but the music on this CD is so darn good, it doesn't make any sense. This is not your usual Cassandra and if you're looking for something different from her from a purely musical standpoint, then this is it.
The Best, Simply The Best, Singer Going.......2007-04-27
In an era where woman singers are more often judged on appearance than artistic merit Cassandra Wilson (who by the way is a major babe) continues to carve her own path and does it brilliantly. I've said it before and I'll just repeat it; Cassandra Wilson is the best singer, in any style, of her generation, period.
why krall whn u can fly!!.......2007-04-12
yes, indeed, people. and the mispelling of the word "crawl" in the title was INTENTIONAL! This is a true jazzy songbird, not a sibialnt snake shushing through the grashhhh!!
Too Many Pop Covers.......2007-03-11
Simply, this isn't one of Cassandra's best. Her last 2-3 cd's have relied too much on pop covers of various merit which really diminishes the effectiveness of one of the most marvellous voices in jazz-blues. I have seen her live several times and she outstanding as a performer and unequalled in the jazz-blues genre, but straying so far (for a wider commercial appeal?) from her blues roots only serves to murk her vocal and musical identity. My fear is this wonderful vocalist will end up in the same situation as Etta James who abandoned her Texas blues roots for a not very convincing or engaging party rock-blues repertoire.
Thunderbird is truly a classic.......2007-03-08
I really love this new album! It is different from her usual style but it's still Cassandra all the same. I love the way her smoky voice rides and intertwines with the deep base and percussions.Especially tracks like "Closer to You", "It would Be So Easy", "Poet" and "Strike a Match". You have a great introduction to her new style with "Go to Mexico" and of course her classic "bluesy" ballad styles with "Easy Rider" and "Red River Valley". My husband who had never heard of her can't get enough of this new album!
The old adage rings true...Like fine wine, she get's better with age!

A bit sad, but absolutely beautiful.......2007-06-09
Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

The multi-channel mix is awful........2007-07-12
As noted in another review, the multi-channel is absolutely awful. It's as if the bass is eq'd out of the mix. Honestly, it's completely unlistenable in my opinion. Thankfully the two channel SACD mix is fine. For that reason, I'm still glad that I bought it because I enjoy this album quite a bit.
Cd Music.......2007-04-06
I was really looking forward
to this cd, but unfortunatally
I didnt receive it.
This version should be pulled........2004-12-02
One of the requirements of SACD releases, as set forth by Sony and Phillips, is that there be at least an SACD (DSD) stereo layer. The surround DSD and hybrid Red Book PCM CD compatible layers are optional. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the stereo DSD layer on this release was taken from the Red Book 16/44.1 PCM master used to make the CD layer. So Blue Note skirted a basic requirement of the format they were releasing on by deceptively scamming consumers into thinking they were getting a true SACD. As far as anyone knows, however, the surround SACD layer was taken directly from the 2 inch multitrack and sampled to DSD, then remixed and mastered to the SACD surround layer. I haven't heard anything to the contrary. As it stands right now, I agree with Fremer that Blue Note should simply apologize, pull the current release, rerelease a proper SACD, and give past purchasers a free exchange. I listened to the surround layer at my parents house in Oregon and was pleased at the music and sound quality. I do think it is overall a bit emotionally monotonal and placid though, as the recent SNL (or was it Mad TV) spoof parodied. But I think people who buy it are looking for that. Still enjoyable.
Let me clear up some of the misconceptions floating around:
Keep your universal DVD player set up internally for 5.1 channel with all channels on at fixed volume (usually max output), set to large, and your reciever/preamps on Surround Direct Analog with no digital conversion...then pray that you have a DVD player and reciever that doesn't do anything else funky. All of the older Denon universal units really messed with the sound. If you're still not getting good bass, then you need full range speakers. Never ever have speakers turned off or set to small in your DVD player when listening to SACD's. In fact, you shouldn't even do this with stereo CDs, since you'll mess up the dynamic range that the outputs are working at.
Most universal players use the original Sony DSD chip, which has a little port that connects to the DAC. Contrary to popular belief, SACD is not converted to DVD-Audio (PCM as opposed to the PWM of DSD) when it goes into that little port. That just sends the analog signal to the filter stage to lop off the high frequency noise. The only conversion that will ever occur is if you try and do bass management, which will kick the Sony converter chip into what's called Wide-DSD...a euphamism for a form of very high frequency PCM, also called Narrow PCM. It's still PCM, it's just that Sony doesn't like to call it that. So, keep everything On, Large, and Fixed in the player and Pure Analog Direct after it gets out and you'll probably be fine. Do volume changes in the reciever in the analog domain.
I also wouldn't trust the new players that convert everything to SACD internally to do bass management. It's another form of Wide-DSD. Why? Because you can't do computations with a 1-Bit format. You can't mix in SACD or produce in that format until you either convert it to analog or PCM. You can only record/master live to each descrete 1-Bit DSD channel, then you're stuck with it as is. All the SACD recording consoles are actually this psuedo-DVD-Audio format internally, though they likely sound quite good. To get true DSD through and through you either record/produce to analog tape, or you mix live, which is probably why Telarc likes the format so much.
PCM has good points and bad. PWM has good points and bad, too. They're both very low noise, but PCM tends to sound a bit artificial and lacking in that organic body of analog. PWM is hella organic and analog-like (probably due to its psuedo-analog 1-bit nature), but embeds subtle quantization noise within the signal permanently, often leaving it sounding not quite as transparent and Oh-My-God-clear and pristine as DVD-Audio at 192khz. Some engineers claim that the high frequencies are inferior in transient response to even normal Red Book CD, but transients are so difficult to measure, Red Book so rife with other problems, and DSD does so well in all the other departments (including other characteristics of its highs) that I find it to be a non-issue. At least you get SACD on all the channels in 5.1, definitely as good or better than 24/96. The last thing you want is conversion back and forth between the two formats internally; then you get the worst of both worlds. Remember that DSD was invented for archival purposes to permanently store the Columbia Records inventory. The archival format's actually twice the bitrate of consumer SACD, so it likely sounds as lovely as is claimed.
Poor Example of SACD.......2004-11-13
My rating of 2 stars applies to the SACD version of this record and not the CD. I consider the CD to be a 5 star recording. After carefully listening to both the two channel SACD mix and the CD stereo versions I could not discern an audible difference. I enjoyed the 5.1 mix and found the rear surround to be tasteful and subtle, not at all distracting, but, again, no significant improvement in detail except that created by spreading the sound around to five channels. A recent article on the "Stereophile" website suggests that the SACD mix in fact shares the same 16 bit lineage as the CD, which would explain why the two channel mix and the CD mix sound identical. Norah's label has cheated its customers with this one and should go back and do an actual DSD mix and replace these "CDs" for free or give us our money back. There is no reason to purchase this SACD in addition to or in lieu of the CD unless you are interested in listening to a standard resolution 5.1 mix.
I love this young lady..........2004-02-27
I have to agree with the others - the SACD analog mix in 5.1 was a blunder(4 stars). I borrowed this from a friend for a test run. I have the same content on DVD/video - Very nice... - When I choose to listen only - I just turn off the TV and listen to a very good 5.1 DD/EX version. I admit it is not quite the quality of SACD but very good nonetheless. Spyro Gyra has 2 SACD's available and they are the standard for SACD comparison - absolutely flawless... Waiting for 2 of my all-time favorites on SACD - Eat a Peach and Live at the Fillmore from the ABB... SACD is just a small notch above DVD-Audio - although with DVD-Audio you can also listen on most any DVD player that supports DTS, DD-5.1 and DD-Stereo. SACD's are more dicriminating - I bought the Onkyo DVSP-800 specifically because of the SACD and DVD-Audio discrete analog and outstanding DVD-progressive scan video capabilities...

Album Description
Newly remixed for greatly improved sound, this intimate 1961 session with Sarah backed only by Mundell Lowe's guitar and George Duvivier's bass is one of the finest musical statements of her career.

Fantastic record - Deserves more than 5 stars .......2007-07-14
This is a beautiful and intimate jazz record with Sarah Vaughan on vocals, Mundell Lowe on guitar, and George Duvivier on bass. The absolute taste and professionalism of those two "sidemen" allow Sarah to take these tunes wherever she wants to and that results in some of the most personal and arresting vocal performances I've ever heard from any jazz vocalist. The tasteful, unforced nature of this record takes you in and holds your attention until you begin to absorb the beauty and profundity of the performances. The Cole Porter tune, Everytime we say goodbye starts in a two beat feel and then opens up to straight four in the second chorus with beautiful chording by Lowe, rock solid walking bass by Duvivier and a soaring vocal performance by Vaughan with swinging phrasing that simply must be heard to be believed. Incredible. This record contains absolutely amazing musicianship from all three that should NOT be missed. Jazz guitar and bass players take note, it doesn't get any better than this; this is one of the best jazz accompaniment albums you will ever hear. Superb record.
Talk about atmosphere..........2007-03-31
...because not many records out there draw you in as deeply as this intoxicating recording. Tunes from Ellington, Porter, Rodgers/Hammerstein all figure prominently in the set list and the trio does each and every one justice. I suppose I could spend the next couple of paragraphs unleashing adjectives to describe the smoky after hours club where this performance might have been heard, but it would easier to say that, simply, this was a high point in Vaughn's career.
the entire album was intimate like a smooth cocktail in a real classic cocktail lounge........2007-03-20
This beautiful CD with Sarah and the musicians is haunting and intimate. Sarah, never faulters in any setting. So with this recording her voice is rich and just a joy to hear. When preparing cocktails for this particular night it was like being in a lush cocktail lounge in the 1950's. The beauty of this recording flashes you back to this time. i really thank you for this CD. I will always play it on any given night, with or without cocktails.
Sarah Vaughan, unadorned........2005-03-30
In this most unusual album, Sarah Vaughan conjures up images of after hours performances in smoke-filled clubs, where a few sad and lonely people nurse their drinks and listen to a solitary singer crooning softly. Here Vaughan sings "pure," without a big band behind her, without sharing the stage with a jazz superstar, and without any restrictions on her own interpretations. Accompanied only by a guitar (Mundell Lowe) and a bass (George Duvivier), both of which play quietly in the background, Vaughan turns in a remarkable performance, recording her most intimate album, one in which she makes the listener feel as if each song is sung for him/her and no one else.
Her famous versatility is on display here, but it is far more subtle than in most of her other albums, since nearly all these songs are slow and lacking in pyrotechnics. Changes in mood are controlled totally by Sarah and not by her accompanists. In "My Favorite Things," a surprising introduction to this album, she sounds like an ingénue, singing in a light soprano without any hint of the deeper register for which she is famous--until halfway through, when the beat picks up and the real Sarah starts to emerge. "Every Time We Say Goodbye," a melancholy song, has a swing beat, and "Easy to Love" is sung almost a capella, with her finger snapping audible in the background. In "Sophisticated Lady," slowly paced and contemplative, she sounds like the great jazz singer we know, but quieter than usual, and in "Great Day," the fastest song on the album, she dances across her notes, improvising as she goes.
The "real" Sarah Vaughan is totally in charge here, singing the mellowest, smoothest, and most intimate album ever, but it is a moody, blue Sarah in many songs--and the album is for quiet times, not celebrations. If you are a lover of Sarah Vaughan and ever fantasized about having her sing a private concert for you alone, this is your chance. Mary Whipple
A real caldron of emotions.......2003-08-09
I've never in my 26 years been an expert on jazz (although Ellington, Miles, Dinah, Ella and Billy Holiday aren't strangers to my cd player), for I come from a rock-ish, punk-ish, gothic-rock background. But tonight, when I first spun 'After Hours' I was reminded that jazz has so much to offer to anyone who doesn't mind music ravishing him violently and making his deep emotions and memories seep through and paint the room with vivid imagery of past-century romance. As I listened to each fold of Sarah's satin-n-silk voice, i shivered over and over again. Almost every song, yes. Jeez, i don't remember getting this many goosebumps since listening to Sade Adu in eighth grade after I broke up with my sweet Natasha :-{} Ms. Vaughn's lucent voice, contrasted with the smoky echo of a double bass and muted guitar cords, is so unpretentious, yet so sure of itself. So experienced. So adult. I don't know how old She was when She sang this, but She seems so profound. Things her voice does are amazing, but it doesn't sound like a studio-chiseled professional acrobatics. Not at all; maybe it has to do with the minimal (and perfect) arrangement, but you feel like you're left alone on a stage with her, face to face. She sounds so honest, so spontaneous, so innocent. Well, enough of it, the poignant 'Through The Years' has come on, and I'm shivering again. What, you haven't clicked "Add to Shopping Cart" yet ????

Considerable time, thought and Guggenheim grant money went into the making of Patricia Barber's Mythologies, an ambitious modern take on Ovid's Metamorphoses. As she is wont to do, the Chicagoan continually reminds us of her aspirations to art with her joyless, half-whispered vocals and show-offy intellectualism. The song sequence, which seems destined for a staged reading, never escapes its literary trappings. But in reflecting on the age-old dance of dreams and destiny, the poetry is mostly good, and sometimes better than that ("unrequited love/is what i know of love/spellbound/I will stay"). And though Barber mostly keeps her considerable skills as a pianist under wraps after getting in some seductive and darkly rumbling licks early on, the varied musical settings prop the songs up. Mythologies ranges from jazz balladry to Hendrixian reveries (via guitarist Neal Alger), lifts openly from Joni Mitchell's Hejira, and tells another tale with hip-hop and a children's choir. This isn't an album for the Diana Krall set, and even some of Barber's early followers may take a pass, but for listeners on her wavelength, it will cast a spell. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
The art song returns after a long absence..........2006-12-23
Who would have guessed that Patricia Barber would be the newest entrant in the art song world? She's written in the great tradition of the 19thC and early 20thC classical composers (Schubert, Berg, Randall Thompson, etc.) but in a jazz genre that really makes sense for the material. Thanks for some really great music.
somehow, she pulls it off..........2006-12-21
A jazz song cycle based on Ovid's Metamorphoses? Sounds like a recipe for a pretentious self-indulgent disaster, but somehow Ms. Barber pulls it off in a way that is not only literate but accessible and mostly (gasp) entertaining. She even gets away with an "Endangered Species rap" of sorts, and you gotta give her mad props for that... or something...
Intriguing........2006-11-07
Patricia Barber, one of the most accomplished female jazz singer-pianists on the planet, has made yet another album of subtle, original songs. This time it's a suite based on Ovid's Metamorphoses, composed with the support of a Guggenheim fellowship (Barber is the only songwriter ever to get a Guggenheim).
So in some respects Mythologies is closer to a contemporary classical project, detached and carefully scored, with clever, uncliched meshing of lyrics and melodies. It doesn't completely hang together, but Barber's vocal artistry is superb, expressing intelligent, elliptical words in a voice as seductive as ever: listen to Morpheus, Icarus (for Nina Simone) or Narcissus, which she suggests could become a "gay wedding song". Using her close-knit band - fearless guitarist Neal Alger, bassist Michael Arnapol and drummer Eric Montzka - she generates a wide range of timbres and feels.
simply stunning.......2006-09-22
I was introduced to Patricia Barber via the audiophile route as her cds
recording quality has always been excellent. Over the years I got to appreciate her music. What I love about Partricia Barber is that she has a sound like no one else, her piano playing is first class, and her songwriting is sublime and original. Each of Miss Barber cd been another step forward, and this one is full of surprise catching you unaware
at every turn. I am really tired of the old format of a singer being backed by the standard piano trio, singing the same old songs.
Miss Barber is different she is absolutely unique and I am sure in the years to come will be regarded as one of the great innovator in vocal jazz.
Coming back to the audio quality, this is simply the best recording I ever heard, natural, dynamic etc it has everything a real show stopper.
Can I give it a million stars??
Definetely my choice for cd of the year, in all categories.
Myth Barber triumphs!.......2006-09-15
This is the first Barber album that I felt inclined to listen to twice through on arrival. Some of her earlier work is "dark and moody" and you really have to be in the mood for it. This new one, although reprising a couple of previously released pieces, seems more coherent. And there is a lot of complication here, listen closely and you will hear many things. Interesting and musical, too.

The Blues ain't nothin' but.......2006-03-15
A woman cryin' for her man.
So begins Dinah Washington's "Back to the Blues" a wonderful album from a performer of great talent who died too young.
When I was a kid my father, a studio musician, would let me tag along with him when he had a recording date. One year, when I was about 9, he took me along to a session. We got there and waited, and waited. The studio musicians were sitting around playing cards, smoking, and telling jokes. I asked what was going on and he told me that Dinah Washington was scheduled to come in to record, she had a lot of `problems' and usually came in about 3-hours late. The musicians didn't mind all that much since they were getting paid by the hour. Sure enough, Dinah Washington (who I didn't know at all) strolled in and it was apparent, even to a 9-year old that she wasn't quite clear-eyed. But after a while the musician got themselves together and she stepped up to the microphone, opened her mouth and out came these sounds from a place I never knew existed. I knew nothing about music generally or the blues specifically but even I knew that something special was going on. I remember hearing that Dinah died about a year later of an accidental overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills. She was only 39 years old. So when I listen to "Back to the Blues" today I can't help but think that the tracks I heard her lay down that day found their way into this album.
As the title suggests "Back to the Blues" marked a return for Dinah to her blues roots. She was comfortable and very successful in the pop, jazz, and R&B arenas. Sad to say, some of her older fans resented her success as something of a crossover artist. No matter what the reason for her decision "Back to the Blues" is an example of Washington at her finest. The album starts with her plaintive "The blues ain't nothin' but a woman cryin' for her man" and takes off from there. The arrangements, most by jazz arranger Fred Norman and two by Don Costa, are lush as one might expect from the early 60s but Dinah's voice take center stage. Among my favorite tracks were "It's a mean old man's world" and "Nobody knows the way I feel this morning". The album contains three bonus tracks that did not appear on the original vinyl LP: "Don't say nothing at all"; "No one man"; and "Me and my gin". The tracks have been remastered and the sound quality is reasonably decent.
If you are already a fan of Dinah you don't need me to `sell' you on this CD. If you are new to Dinah Washington this CD is as good a place as any to start.
Dinah's Best Blues.......2005-12-22
A great album! Dinah sings the Blues in her Jazzy, sophisticated-yet-accessible, no-nonsense way. The 15 songs/tracks are all must-haves - even her lyrically dyslexic reading of "No One Man". Recorded July & November 1962.
relaxing.......2001-07-15
dinah washington is the voice of the decade!!!!. I can go shopping in grocery store & I'll hear that voice!!!
Everyone over 25 yrs of age have heard her voice they don't know who it is.,but they know they have heard her on commercials, pop stations their mothers have albums, grandma's too...I'm a fan .
A Tornado in Heat.......2000-08-27
This CD gets better with every listen! Dinah recorded these songs just over a year before her untimely death (age 39!). Though her voice sounds rough around the edges on some selections here, it all works to her advantage because it only adds to the down-home, blues-beltin' mama that many listeners associate Dinah with. Arrangements are usually a large orchestra with occasional strings added in but it's very much Dinah's voice that takes center stage here. Dinah knew her critics were blasting her for leaving the blues world for pop a few years back, so this was her way to make peace with them. But the listeners are the ones who win out because her rich, knowing voice goes thru 15 songs here like a tornado in heat.
Diva of Diva's.......2000-03-25
I bought this CD (and Ultimate Dinah Washington CD - 16 songs) after the play, Dinah Was. I have approx. 100 CDs (different Artist/Music), but I do not have CDs as the above-mentioned -- 31 total songs -- there is not one song that you would not replay! She was the greatest.

The smoothest tenor sax along with soothing piano.......2003-06-17
This CD is exquisite. Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris combine in the first track "Willow Weep for Me" with the best way to relax after a hard day. Guaranteed to drop blood pressure 20 within 5 seconds. I have nearly worn out this CD. A must must have for tenor sax lovers, jazz piano lovers and Gene Harris fans.
Ballads/Stanley Turrentine.......2001-11-25
For anyone (or especially anytwo) who hold in their hearts a scintilla of romance this is the quintessential soundtrack. A prolonged excursion into a very deep vibe. Add flame if only from a candle & perhaps the sunshine of Spanish brandy, clothing is definitely optional!
Be prepared for winter. No one but Stanley can play this slowly, this beautifully.
Perfect candlelight music.......2000-07-07
My favorite Turrentine album since "The Baddest Turrentine", this one has Stanley's smooth, soulful sound, but without the overproduced "strings flooding in" that diminishes many of his other recordings. This mellow album, which sounds like an actual quintet rather than something cooked up in a studio, will please confirmed jazz afficionados as well as pop fans -- another good "intro to jazz" album for people who can't quite get their ears around the more demanding sounds of many jazz artists. Everybody likes it. It makes such a great gift, I'd like to get a volume discount.
Smooth Elegance.......2000-04-02
This is Stanley Turrentine at his best. You can hear the influence of Ben Webster in some of his deep, breathy playing. But more than anything, you can hear Turrentine's own sound. Although sometimes unfairly overshadowed by Coltrane and Dexter Gordon, Stanley Turrentine's expansive, rich, warm tones always feel just right. Every song on this disc is perfect for mellow evening or Sunday morning listens. Get it. I guarantee you will play it over and over again.
