Herbie H is a mad scientist always looking to blend diparate parts to create an music alchemy that moves a new directions in sound. George Duke in an interview when asked of Herbie's adventures in 'singing' through a vocoder, alluded to the words 'jivin" and is he serious?
His courage to push the limits is admirable even while not always up to his enormous genious.

A great package that deserves another re-issue!.......2007-02-17
I loved this album. It was funky and the songs were really catchy for the most part. Yet another album that has Herbie singing with a vocoder. Pick a copy up if you can find it, you won't be displeased!
uhhhhhhhhhh..................2003-01-18
Probably the weakest of his 70's efforts. The album focuses too much on the vocoder, which Herbie sounds redundant throghout. The
only person who can pull that off is Roger Troutman. He had a unique way of using it, where Herbie was just keeping up with the times. Only worth getting for "ready or not", obviously influenced by Ray Parker Jr. Other than that, its a failed attempt. His next album "Monsters" was much better, particarly for the two ballads, "stars in your eyes", and "Makin'love"
Best of the Vocal Albums.......1999-06-27
This is probably Herbie Hancock's best vocal album, which unfortunately is rather faint praise. "Ready or Not" and "Honey from the Jar" are both good funky numbers. "Tell Everybody" isn't too bad, and "Knee Deep" is an intriguing instrumental. The other two you may want to skip over (although Herbie did rescue "Trust Me" as a jazz instrumental on his duet album with Wayne Shorter - quite a surprise!).
Exelent, Best use of Vocoder i've ever heard.......1998-12-28
Wonderesque!!! beautifull Rhodes pianos and sinths, extremely funky! One of the few albums in wich herbie sings (w/ vocoder always)also one of the best records for the jazz-challenged to get into easily.

Customer Reviews:
A Herbie Hancock disco/funk production.......2001-12-31
Rather than use funk/r&b as a springboard for inspired solos as he did in the mid-70's, here HH seems intent on mining trendy pop-oriented elements for their own sake, and leaving his jazz talents on the shelf. Those expecting keyboard solos from Herbie will find them few and far between in the process to appeal to dance-oriented pop music fans. I admit the track READY OR NOT comes close to working up a Funkadelic-like sweat, and several other cuts are pretty good for the genre it represents, though not for Herbie's keyboard talents. Yet overall the album has (intentionally?) little aesthetic value, and is further marred by Hancock's reliance on a vocoder for singing (better to be used in smaller doses). In all, those looking for jazz won't find it here, even in a fused state, and those looking for a dance record that moves the mind as well as the feet at best only get the latter with this album.
Captivating vocoder!.......1999-04-28
I LOVE this album. I've been trying to find it to this date. It is a wonderful set of songs where Herbie extensively uses a VOCODER! It's is truly a classic from toward the end of the DISCO ERA (1978). I loved the electronic sounds on this album back then, and I still love them now, and they probably will go over even better in the 90's and even into the next century. Go, Herbie, GO! JOHN REMMIE
