Customer Reviews:
Thelonious Sinatra Monk.......2006-12-29
Yes, this is a strange album: at some points one could expect Sinatra bursting into one of his bravado and macho performances, but it's Monk, not Sinatra this album should be about...
One of the most idiosyncratic and brilliant musicians jazz has ever produced is somewhat suffocated by the arrangements but, than again, when he solos, he seems to mock the arrangement, playing at times even more analytically and cynically than usual.
I still LIKE these orchestrated charts (well played- no doubt about it), but it was a mistake to include Monk's solo performance at the same album... That performance merrits at least six stars and it brakes the coherence of the album.
I like Sinatra as well, don't get me wrong, but one should distinguish between things one likes and things one finds brilliant, magnificent, monkish... Orchestrating Monk is a good idea, but this is not sufficiantly Monkish...
Is there an album of Mingus or Gil Evans orchestrating Monk? Now that's something I would like to hear...
Monkish Delight.......2006-08-23
Monk made idiosyncrasy a way of life and a way of music--all without artifice or cliché. He was unrepeatable and unforgettable. No one else sounds much like him, although I have a George Russell recording where Russell (more known as an arranger than a soloist) betrays some influence.
Monk is most known for his quartets, but this is a big band setting with multi-layered and swinging arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Yet Monk is still Monk: the use of space, always playing the melody, the long, inimitable arpeggios, the percussive sensibility, the serious playfulness and earnestness without being precious or pretentious.
Yes, Monk tended to play the same tunes repeatedly at this point in his career, but these renditions shine, nevertheless. Listen. Enjoy. Be thankful. Human are bestowed with the ability to manifest beauty--at times.
Don't be discouraged so fast.......2004-12-30
This was the first Monk album I ever bought, and while it might not be as finger-snappingly Hep as some of his work in more typical, smaller groups, it's still a slamming set of songs, and an album that I play quite often, even after owning it for about a decade. And while the whole thing is quite nice, I have to agree with the earlier reviewer about the solo rendition of 'Round About Midnight at the end...it is well worth the price of the CD for this track alone. It's Monk, you know you want it, don't be scared.
not his best but it went with the times.......2002-12-09
I acquired the rather small Columbia Years box set of Monks work where they respond to the criticism of the album. At the time his Columbia output was being greeted by critics and fans alike for being too much of the same old thing. He debuted a few new tracks but never broke the same ground using new exciting musicians in his studio band, so in response to this he went to California and had Oliver Nelson set up a big band for him to play with. His live big band albums are truely classic and this album simply cant match the greatness of those two live masterpieces("At Town Hall" and "Big Bandl, Quartet Live"). This album was the last of his Columbia albums and it was attacked by everyone the minute it hit the shelves.
I can say I do enjoy this record. Even though it isnt up to the standard of the live albums he did in this vain it is still very good. I do recommend this album if you are a fan of big bands and Oliver Nelson and not if you are seasoned veteran of Monks music if you are willing to accept it as a change of pace and that it is and with its flaws it still can stand on its own two feet.
Repeat Midnight.......2000-07-07
I love the music of Thelonious Monk, but in this big band setting the arrangements are a bit bombastic. The only thing that really stands out is Monk's piano, playfull as ever, twirling around. Suggestion: play the last song of the album again and again and again and again and... His solo Round Midnight is one of the highlights of 20th century music. And that's even an understatement (I really like it).

Solid Album, Definitely Worth Your Money.......2002-09-18
I wouldn't qualify that record with the 'classic' label but it is undeniably a very hot and inspired piece of work. Buddha Monk isn't exactly the best lyricist out there but he's got a very tight flow and does his music with his heart and guts. For me, Buddha Monk got a very rare thing that Guru once called 'the voice'. Like KRS-1 or Chuck D, he's got a deep and powerful voice that makes him unique in the rap game. It's a shame that the Buddha Monk doesn't get more attention and media coverage because he really deserves props and shows in this album an important potential yet to come. On the production side, quality control is, with a few exceptions, maintained, and you get a dark and paranoid vibe punctuated with heavy beats.
If you love good hardcore Hip Hop made by people who got love for the game and true skills, do yourself a treat and pick this up.
It takes confidence........2000-10-20
Positives: You have to admire Buddha Monk. He's got Wu affiliation that means instant sales these days, and he doesn't really use it. One feature from ODB, and Dirty just does the chorus. You have to stop and wonder why. Maybe he thinks he has enough talent to be appreciated for his own skills. Maybe he wants to boost Brooklyn Zoo instead of capitalizing off of Wu's fame. Whatever his reason may be, he put together a pretty good album and featured some little known but talented rappers. I hate to admit it but "Got's Like Come On Thru" is one of the best tracks on the album. About Buddha himself: He has a cool voice, energetic style, and decent lyrics. Check out "Buddha Monk At The Opera" cause it's pretty funny.
Negatives: No really deep messages or anything. Just aggressive rap for the most part. A few weak tracks. Otherwise tight.

Perhaps not *quite* what you want..........2007-04-27
If you're like me and you have a hankering for "film noir music," you're probably thinking of a lonely sax playing an urban, 3 AM melodic line, backed by some bluesy chords from a small jazz ensemble. Like John Barry's excellent theme from "Body Heat," for example, or something like Jerry Goldsmith's theme for "Chinatown."
Never mind the fact that the great majority of films noir from the classic period (1941-1955) didn't have jazzy background music like that at all, but was usually scored with quasi-classical romantic string music (with a solo violin) or bombastic, brass-heavy instrumentals.
Anyway, this CD isn't the 3 AM sax stuff.
Not to say that there isn't some of that on here. You might like "Godfather" (not, however, the theme you're thinking of from the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather films), or "Blues for Guylaine," or even the bluesy passages from Bernard Herrmann's "Taxi Driver" suite.
But there's some odd stuff on here that causes me to wonder how, precisely, it qualifies as "film noir."
For instance, the dreamy carnival music from "The Elephant Man," or the angular string music in "Buckets of Blood" (from "Carrie," not the Roger Corman film). Seems like a reach. The first cut, "Turning Pages" had me unpleasantly surprised, and triggered my I've been ripped-off alarm. And "Chop Shop" has a wah guitar that sounds a lot more like a 70's blaxsploitation film than film noir.
The inclusion of Angelo Badalamenti helps redeem the collection; his music for "Twin Peaks," "Fire, Walk With Me" and "Mulholland Drive" redefines what a noir theme should sound like.
This CD is odd, no doubt about it. "Godfather," which sounds decidedly noirish, is from a comedy/drama film about a man who's paid to impregnate lesbians. "The Wrong Man" music is relentlessly perky but comes from a bona fide noir. (Okay, a Hitchcock noir, not quite the same thing.)
The key here, I guess, is to enlarge the scope of what you think noir film music ought to be... But perhaps a better title for this collection of music might have been "Neo-Noir!"
Still, credit must be given to liner notes writer Eddie Muller and his Film Noir Foundation for at least directing the current noir wave. His book "Dark City" turned me - and probably many others - to noir. Long may his tribe increase!
Summary: If you're looking for classic/sterotypical, 3 AM wet-pavements-in-the-Dark-City noirish stuff, try John Barry's "Body Heat," which I enthusiastically recommend. Barry practically *owns* that silky/sexy slow sax genre.
Nice imaginative collection.......2006-08-04
A collection of musical cues from various film noir scores, but imaginatively assembled to constitute a new score for a nonexistent movie. Cleverly done, choosing from excellent sources, and not going for the easy or the obvious. It's exciting to hear someone making a connection between Bernard Herrmann and Angelo Badalamenti.

Following his 2002 collaboration with guitarist-vocalist Anders Osborne, New Orleans's Big Chief Monk Boudreaux delivers this worthy solo debut. Produced by Osborne and boasting assistance by Crescent City usual suspects Dr. John, Cyril Neville, and Tab Benoit (who anonymously fade into the background), Boudreaux's dusky tribal chants are pumped with simmering funk and swampy, primitive R&B. Less songs than free-form chants, Mr. Stranger Man captures the heart of the New Orleans Indian's musical firewater. The percussion-heavy tracks provide an upbeat yet ominous atmosphere for Big Chief's extemporaneous storytelling and droning, near spoken vocals. Even though some songs follow conventional structure, such as the Meters-styled "Shotgun Joe," Boudreaux improvises like a great poet as the band lays down a boiling, foot-tapping foundation. The rhythms vary, but the authentic, near hypnotic, body-swaying vibe and the chief's moaning vocals resonate like classic reggae, a genre reflected on a couple of tunes. It's not what he says but how he says it, and Boudreaux conjures a groove as pervasive and enveloping as the humidity on a midsummer New Orleans night. --Hal Horowitz

beautiful.......2006-11-13
Beautiful voice, beautiful songs. Recordings from an era we can be nostalgic about. Singers should listen to it: how to project a voice and how to pronunciate.
Peter Dawson--Songs of Sea and Empire.......2000-06-27
If you are a Peter Dawson devotee, as I am, this is an essential album to have. It includes many items I had never heard the great man sing, as well as some of his greatest song renditions. No Peter Dawson collection is complete without "We Saw the Sea", "On the Road to Mandelay", "The Fleet's not in Port Very Long", and "Saddle Your Blues to a Wild Mustang". Among the titles that were new to me that I liked were "The Unacccompanied Organist", and some of the Australian Bush Songs. Mr. Dawson is quite an acquired taste for an American. He was at his best singing songs of the British Empire glories. Once you have heard him at his best though, singing his definitive version of "Waltzing Matilda" or any of about 30 selections that could be described as his "greatest hits", I think if you have any feeling for they type of music he performed, you will be hooked. Mr. Dawson may be the finest singer that Americans have never heard of. Only one record, that of 'Matilda', backed by the "Mauri Poi Song", was ever released in the United States in his lifetime (1882-1961). Luckily, more of his material is coming to CD, and music listeners are the better for it. For years, I was restricted to an occasional Gilbert and Sullivan aria that happened to be in a collection, or the occasional '78 that happened to have made it across the ocean somehow. This CD was a good addition to my Dawson collection, and I recommend it.

This group should get more exposure.......2006-04-24
I am not a jazz person at all...but my boyfriend took me to a jazz concert on my birthday in NY and the group that was playing was remarkable. It was as though they had known each other from another world or something. I'm serious...I have never seen a band with so much passion about that kind of music. I always thought jazz was a bunch of chaos...but these gentlemen are a diamond in the rough. My boyfriend is getting a lot love right now.

I've had the opportunity to see these guys perform Live. Take my word for it, they're live and in living color. Their live performances are just as good as,if not better than the recordings. Keep up the good works fellas. I'm enjoying every note.
