Bob Seger is back, and it's about time!.......2007-06-18

I found out about Bob Seger after I came back from Viet Nam, and I was pretty wild and wanted nothing to do with the establishment and "society". All I wanted was a big motorcycle, a willing woman, a bottle, good friends, and to never call anyone "sir" ever again. Among those friends I found Seger on the speakers and he pumped my brain full of fire and soul. We were the "live to ride, and ride to live" crowd, and "Horizontal Bob" was almost a life style. Well, all I can say is that I changed, and so did Bob. We both weathered the years, became respectable, and rounded off the rough edges. When Bob did a duet with Martina McBride behind a black piano, I thought it was over. But, with FACE THE PROMISE Bob Seger has opened a door to the past, and let is some fresh air amongst the sillyness that passes for rock and roll these days. He just turned 62 the other day, and a comic radio jock said, as I was commuting (yes, sometimes I feel like I've had a sex change operation) to work that "Bob had lost the lead in his pencil". Well, that radio "personality" has obviously never heard FACE THE PROMISE. If you are over 40 (or like me over 50), and want that hard driving sound and entrancing lyrics that do not have to be hidden behind shredding guitar, buy this album. Of course, you may find yourself buying a motorcycle, wearing black leather to break the wind, and heading for the promised land.;-P If this is your first Bob Seger, his catalog is available, and you have a world of serious and true rock and roll to experience. Rock on!

As another reviewer wrote, this was worth the wait! Seger has lost none of the edge in his voice or the message in his songs. I can't add much to what the other reviewers have written except to say; buy it, you won't be disapointed!

Bob Seger Face the Promise.......2007-05-31

This is a good decent middle America rock and roll effort by a true to your roots original. I saw Bob Seger in 1975 when he had flowing black hair mid way down his back and he could really work it brother could he. He tapped into some energy like all over the place in yo face get down dude. I had never heard of him before I saw him at the University of Montana and a girl from Detroit, Michigan had to tell be to go check him out. Was I glad I did and how. If waiting years at a time to get new Seger product is what we have to do then alright Bob...no wine before it's time man.

This is probably the best CD I have ever purchased. I was buying it for one particular song, but after receveing it I was very happy to realize that 10 of the 12 songs were just as good as the one I bought it for. I even bought another copy for a friend that is a big Seger fan anyway and she has enjoyed it just as much.

My Favorite Sade CD.......2007-02-17

Promise is my favorite Sade CD. She's just so cool, yet not afraid to share her sadness. "War of the Hearts" is a standout song, and if you're like me, you might even play it a few times in a row when the mood strikes.

Unlike other reviewers, I am at a loss for words to say about this album, except, I LOVE IT! Sade is the BEST! I have all but three of her albums. I have been buying her albums since the 80's. I fell in love with her music from song 1 and so far not one song has disappointed me. Sade's music is wonderful - I am a big fan of Sade Adu and her music. ALL OF HER ALBUMS ARE AN INVESTMENT TO MY SOUL.

I can't go wrong with any of the tracks on this cd except one. Once you've heard "Never As Good As the First Time" with Leroy Osbourne's vocals on the track, it seems like there's no other way. I think their vocals compliment each other. If you want to hear Osbourne's vocals on the track, get The Best of Sade. Other than that, the cd is phenomenal.

Still the Same After All These Years.......2007-05-27

On the CD Seger sounds the same as he did 35 years ago. The DVD is filled with clips of the making of the CD, interspersed with earlier Seger concert footage. Featured clips of Kid Rock and other current performers rounds out this great musical selection.

Album of the decade!.......2007-03-26

After what I would call 10 years of nothing on mainstream radio(which I pretty much turned off after awhile and tuned to classic rock stations.) Seger is back and with a great album. And when I say "great" I mean there is not one bad song on this record, I listen to it day and night and it just keeps getting better. As I said in my title I believe this record should be Best Album of The Decade. I also saw him on Nov.14th at the Charleston Civic Center here in WV. I had seen him there 10 years ago on the "It's a Mystery" tour and I have to say out of all the concerts I've seen in my 39+ years, his were the absolute best. If he cuts another album and tours again, I hope he comes back here so I can make it 3 times seeing him in concert. When I heard about this record I thought to myself finally there's going to be another great c.d. I can add to my collection. And now I can turn on the radio (which my wife likes to set to mainstream because she's 4 years younger than me and won't listen when I quote Seger and tell her "today's music ain't got the same soul.") and hear some good music. And I was at my local Wal-Mart at midnight the night it was released, in fact I watched them take it out of the box. I took it home that night and played it all the way through twice! I'll wrap this up now by saying "Welcome back Bob" you were missed and as long as you're making music, I'll be listening.

Bob hasn't lost it, he's just as good now as he was 40 years ago.My favorites are "No Matter Who You Are" "No More" (I'd like our president to hear this one) and "The Answers in the Question" I got the DVD also, and it was definitely worth it!!

I have seen the him in 4 concerts over my life always good and this album sounds great all I Want now is a DVD of this concert tour and it would make my day he still rocks.I have to say he sound as good live as he does on Disc if not better

Best Collection of Aaron Copland.......2005-12-21

Aaron Copland is for me one of three of America's greatest composers of the 20th Century. Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross are the other two. Aaron Copland would have been 100 years old on November 14, 2000. In reflection I turn back to my first Copland album, "Copland's Greatest Hits." I was familiar as most people are with "Hoe Down" and that was the springboard for me. What attracted me was that distinctive "American" sound and "American" quality of the piece. This "American" sound is very present in Jerome Moross' score for the epic Western film, "The Big Country." One can also find similar influences in Bernard Herrmann's score for "The Kentuckian" and very much like Copland, Herrmann researched and interpolated regional folk songs and integrated them into his own unique style. Because I always liked film scores and also very much liked Copland's "Hoe Down" I always thought there had to be some connection with the musical approach. When I got this album and listened to "Appalachian Spring" for the first time I knew that I had discovered pure "Americana" and I have found that sound replicated in so many films. If you listen to the scores for "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams" or even recently to "Saving Private Ryan" this sound is present. This is a tribute to Copland and American music. Copland reinvented American music by giving it his unique structure. Copland's music is so simply melodic yet richly textured that it has an inherent sophistication that defines our nation. This is my favorite Copland album. That may be sentimental, but it helped me try to define a sound that I personally found moving and uplifting. I highly recommend this album of collected recordings. The recording of "Appalachian Spring" on this CD performed by the New York Philharmonic and conducted by Leonard Bernstein is my favorite recording of this piece to date.

The finest version of Appalachian Spring -- bar none!.......2001-12-09

I marvel at this CD every time I listen to it. This CD features Aaron Copland conducting the Boston Symphony in a performance of his own Appalachian Spring. There are many poignant hesitations and nuances in this performance. There is good reason why this piece has become synonymous with Americana -- listen to it, close your eyes and just let the images unfold.

This CD also contains Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Philharmonic in the Billy the Kid Ballet Suite. It is a spectacular performance as well.

Outstanding Collection of Copland Music.......1999-11-09

Every cut on this CD is very good. My personal favorites are "Appalacian Spring", and the "The Tender Land - Finale: The Promise of Living." I would recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of Classical Music.

A Promise Fulfilled.......2007-05-07

I fell in love with Tim Janis' music the very first time I heard it. I now am the proud owner of 24 CDs and DVDs. On the album THE PROMISE, there is a song with the same title. It is superb! One of the most beautiful I have ever heard. Between the penny whistle and the violins, and of course the beautiful arrangement......it is spellbinding! Of course, you can say that about MOST of Tim Janis' music. Relaxing, yes, and also very memorable.

Expect the iceberg.......2007-01-11

Everybody that hears this asks if it is from the film Titanic, and there is no doubt that the melodic structure and arrangements do resemble the title song from that movie. Whether that is a bad thing or not depends on your view of "that song". But for those prepared to get past that there is enough variety in these lush orchestral pieces to keep you interested, very calming and soothing. Typical of Tim Janis and I think one his better efforts

The Promise, Tim Janis.......2006-08-28

I discovered Tim Janis on a trip to Kennebunk, Maine in 2000. I was in a shop that was playing his music. I was immediately taken by the uplifting, soothing and beautiful melodies. Some of the pieces have a Celtic flavor, and although his music has a distinct style, each composition is unique. The thought has crossed my mind when I listen to my collection of Tim Janis CDs that if someone close to me were seriously ill, this would be the most therapeutic music I could give them.

I believe I have all of Tim Janis' CDs. I recommend all of them, but I am particularly enthralled by The Promise, which is very romantic and lush. It's perfect background music for intimate moments.

Thereapudic, calming and serene..........2005-11-26

Simply put...wonderful. I know nothing of the subject of composing music; nor can I even read music; however I think this guy is an absolutely outstanding. Initially, I bought this for my 50 minute commute every day, in an effort to try to calm my nerves while surrounded by crazy people going 80 - 90 mph. Well, it worked and have since fallen in love with his style. I listen to his music while I work, while I drive and while I write. I will eventualy own all his CDs...and already have 3 of them. Strangely enough though, they are all similar, yet still all different.

Well Realized and Inspired.......2007-02-18

This album would easily have been a Moodies album, minus the female backup vocals. If you're into the most mystical, explorative traits of the Core 7, it's all here. Surprisingly, Mike voice is very alive and flourishes here. On the classic 7 a deep, mostly limited vocal presented, though intentionally. On this album he's alive, and energetic.

This album lacks a musical or editorial intro but makes up for it in the middle. The album arc feels much like Good Boy and includes a rather deep and spacey Mike poem. This is #2 behind Blue Jays for the Moodies hiatus, to me. Very colorful and deep, as Mike always is. Played it only once and was totally absorbed. Paints a picture of what could've been...

The Promise - Michael Pinder.......2007-01-05

This album is a departure from the Moody Blues "sound". It is not as complex and polished. Consequently, it took me some time to appreciate it. The finale is truly amazing and rivals the best of the early Moody Blues. However, the rest of the album is good if not great. I would recommend it for any fan of the positive and the beautiful!

This is a very good album, it's very pleasant. I was surprised how crisp and down-to-earth it sounds, production wise. It's actually folk music that's very spiritual and only slightly exsperimental, though often melodic. 'I only want to love you', which may not necessarily be a love song, is my favourite track. His vocals on the song are good and it has a great melody. There's some acoustic gospel tinges on this album and there's a jazzy number (track four). The last three songs (message/seed/promise) are more psycehdelic.

The lyrics are all about Mike's spiritual journey, though some could be interpreted as love songs. None of the songs are bad.

During the Moody Blues' mid-'70s hiatus, Mike Pinder put out his first solo album in 1976 with "The Promise". If you're a big fan of his Moody Blues work and are coming to this album looking for more from where that came from, you may be in for a surprise, because Pinder definitely turned a musical corner here. At times, the sound is still quite lush, but this is basically mid-'70s soft rock with little of the symphonic sound of the Moodies--it seems Pinder used the Mellotron mostly for 'ornamental' effects, and he actually went with an Arp synth for the 'string' sounds on "You'll Make It Through". Additionally, there's very much of a jazz flavor to the flute-laden "Someone To Believe In", as well as a heavy gospel vibe on "You'll Make It Through" and on the coda of "Free As A Dove". Pinder's vocals are generally mellow and typically earnest, though occasionally they're a bit shakey and at times slip over into sappiness. Certainly, Pinder's talent for engagingly tuneful songwriting is solidly on display on a a majority of the songs here--"Free As A Dove" has a contemplative instrumental break with a great, harmonized guitar line, although the good-timey coda does go a bit overboard; "You'll Make It Through" is uplifting; "I Only Want To Love You" is a little sappy, but still endearing; "Carry On" is breezy and quite catchy; and "Message" is stately and has a dreamy quality, although it suffers from some fairly overwrought lyrics. And that leads to another problem--the onslaught of New Age-style lyrics is overkill, especially considering how corny some of them are, as on the pompous spoken-word piece "The Seed". He really gets carried away on the largely dull, 6-minute title track, and that really hurts considering the shortness of the main album portion--less than 32 minutes. This CD version is lengthened with the inclusion of 2 bonus tracks which aren't listed anywhere on the package and were recorded much later than the rest of the tracks--unfortunately, one of them is an inferior re-recording of "One Step Into The Light" done in a late '80s adult contemporary style; the other is the mellow, nicely tuneful "Island To Island", a very pleasant tune, though it's a bit toothless. If you love Pinder's work with the Moodies, you will reap some rewards from this album--it's certainly not a disaster, but "The Promise" is an album that really feels like a frustrating missed opportunity.

The Moody Blues lost a key part of their sound when Pinder split from the band, and although there have been some good songs since, in my opinion they haven't been as consistently good as on their first 8 albums. But this LP reminds me of every part of every Moody Blues record that I didn't like, and I'm a HUGE fan. The lyrics here are quite good, but good music this album is NOT. It's also not well produced and the background singers are dreadful. If Michael Pinder had been hoping for this to launch his solo career it certainly tanked. This album has only two things going for it: It's rare and it has nice cover art.

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28

My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??

She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29

Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!

Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.

Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.

On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.

She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.

She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.

Hearing her sing live is like being home!

Astonishing.......2003-09-04

I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...

Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04

Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

Sure, there are more inventive or intense contemporary Christian acts out there. But as acts aspiring to boy-band fame in the CCM market go, Plus One are the best. Their harmonies are really solid and intricately woven together, their convictions undoubtedly heartfelt, their arrangements uplifting. The Promise, by Plus One, is definately my favorite CD. I got introduced to the group by reading a fiction book where the main character finds the album on the internet. I decided to check them out-and I found an album that I listen to over an over again. This album is awesome, both with lyrics and musically (I love their sound!) I advise you to check it out-you'll love it too!
WRITTEN ON MY HEART makes me really thankful to God-His love is truly written on my heart. GOD IS IN THIS PLACE reminds me that I am never alone. THE PROMISE gives me hope in Jesus, while MY LIFE tells me that while it's okay to have fun, I should never forget to pray and listen to God. This song is also like an invitation to come to Him for those who haven't. SOUL TATTOO is a song of thankfullness and greatfullness to God (beware of this one-it will get stuck in your head for days!) I WILL RESCUE YOU reminds me that God will always be there for me whenever I need Him, and WHEN YOUR SPIRIT GETS TOO WEAK gives me the hope that my brothers and sisters in Christ will be there to encourage me. LAST FLIGHT OUT is a beautiful love song that makes me want to cry, while RUN TO YOU is a cool song telling me to run to God "when the world gets so cold and my heart is fifteen below." BE is like God telling me He loves me. HERE IN MY HEART is another pretty love song (stock up on the tissues with this one as well.) MY FRIEND demonstrates the preciousness and value of good friendships.
All the lyrics in this album are solid and clean, and the music is amazing! This truly was a great find!

Plus One more star!.......2003-07-06

When I first heard that there was going to be not one, but two Christian boy-bands (the other being True-Vibe), I have to confess that I was not crazy about the idea. My fear was that they would be a "boy band" first and a Christian group second.

Fortunately they turned out to be the reverse of my fears.

"The Promise" was one of the best albums of 2000, vaulting Plus One to the tops of not only the Christian charts, but the secular charts as well. In addition to a concert tour that was a huge hit, Plus One also popped up in a few TV shows during 2000 and 2001.

Nearly three years later, many of the songs on this album still receive a lot of radio play on both Christian and secular stations.

Although the group was put together by an outsider (i.e., someone not in the group itself) and all the songs were written by other people, the message in this album is clear: God is not just out there, but He is a big part of your life. This message is made clear by the songs "Written On My Heart," "Soul Tattoo," and "Here In My Heart."

Probably the most popular of the songs on this album, at least in the Christian circles, is "God Is In This Place," a reminder that God is here, there, and everywhere.

The group has recently dropped from five members to three members with the departure of Jeremy Mhire and Jason Perry. The remaining three have decided, at least for now, to stay a trio. We'll have to wait and see what the future holds for them. In the meantime, get acquainted with this group through this album.

it's a good cd..........2002-12-05

i'm not a big plus one fan, but i have to say this cd was a lot better than their other ones. this seems more Christ-oriented than their earlier cds. this is definitely an improvement, and, although many people think the love songs are inappropriate for the cd, i think that they're relevant to a non-Christian's life, which makes the cd appealing. their love songs are 'clean' & they represent love in a way that God intended love between two people to be.
i appreciate how honest they are in their lyrics -- 'for you i would fly, at least i would try' last flight out -- instead of going on about all that hype about sex & drugs. the title song, the promise, also has beautiful lyrics -- 'all you can see is dark and lonely days ahead, but remember Jesus said: He knows every star in the sky...in His arms you're never alone.'
if you're looking for a good cd, you've found it. i would also recommend 'ZOEgirl' and 'joy williams' if you like pop. :) God bless y'all!

audio bad worse than the old LP's.......2000-11-23

A marvelous singer that I have loved since I was a child, singing the songs of his that I have enjoyed all these many years. The sad part of the recording is that the sound hasn't been reworked and it sounds worse that the old LP. It's really sad that they would issue this great recording in such a sad state. If you don't mind the bad fidelity, you will enjoy this.

My wife talking to me from the grave........1999-03-08

My wife passed awau in Jan.1999. This month (March) Ifound a letter from she had mailed in 1948 to me in which she said in part "It just go'es to show what being truly in love means. Just now they played (radio) BLUE BIRD OF HAPPYNESS. I wanted to tell everone that it's right here." We were married 57 years and deeply in love that will never end. Thank you.
