Amazon.com essential recording
Freshly remastered and reissued with all its pop and zip enhanced, here is one of the stellar recordings of the jazz-rock fusion era. Underpinning this jumping, multirhythmic, fathoms-deep groove music is the percussive power that Herbie Hancock, on squawking, scratching, stuttering, pulsing electronic keyboards, and Paul Jackson on thrumming, wah-wahing bass, add to Mike Clark's straight-up, rock-solid, propulsive drumming. From there, any band member can swoop and dive in celebration of Hancock's vibrant compositions. Bennie Maupin brilliantly deploys several horns in spare, soulful, and otherworldly ways. But listen carefully, too, for the broad palette Hancock employs in lead and comping roles. He augments the streak of Bill Evans melodicism evident in earlier, acoustic years with sustained funk fire and shuddering R&B drive. --Peter Monaghan

5 out of 5 stars Along with Head Hunters I, his best work.......2007-05-07

In my opinion, this album/CD, along with the first Head Hunters, is Herbie's best work. These are great funk/jazz compositions. They blew my mind when I first heard them back in the 70's and like all great art they transcend time. They are must have. A nice fit with these two pieces is Headhunters "Survival of the Fittest"

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN HEADHUNTERS? .......2007-04-06

Yes and no. After the run away success of Headhunters, the band went back in the studio, recruited a new drummer, and recorded this follow up of that classic. Mr. Hands had a lot to live up to after recording a masterpiece and he had no problem delivering the goods on Thrust.

In a way this album is superior to Headhunters. What makes it superior is Mike Clark. His drumming give the jams a lean feel which makes the band musicianship sound looser than it did on Headhunters. Also, the rest of band sound comfortable in their newly found spaced out jazz funk. If you listen closely to the playing on Headhunters, you'll feel a sense of apprehension from the band like they're merely getting their feet wet. But with Thrust, they sound comfortable in their style as they dive in a ocean of spacey funk that predated the "Mothership Connection" by a couple of years.

Track for track, Thrust is approached with the same blueprint as "Headhunters", but Herbie and company refine the same formula well enough to keep things fresh. "Palm Greese" is up there with Chameloen as being one of the funkiest jams in Herbie's catalog, while "Actual Proof" is highlighted by some more long distance soloing from Mr. Hands himself. "Butterfly" is a much better slow piece than Vien Melter and is ultimately the centerpiece of the album. "Spank-a-Lee" is a great way to close out the album with an all out mid tempo jam session driven by Herbie synth bites.

Thrust is packed with back to back highlights but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's just as good or better than Headhunters. For one the compositions are not as potent as it was on its predecessor. The compositions are all great but, only "Palm Grease" and "Butterfly" reach the level of the compostions on Headhunters. On top of that, Herbie really doesn't offer any new ideas as compared to Headhunters. He and his band are just reinforcing the strengths they found on Headhunters.

I highly reccommend this album along with Headhunters. It doesn't matter which one you choose to listen to first because both albums are deeply layered with F.U.N.K.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy and often underrated successor to "Headhunters".......2006-11-11

Herbie Hancock brings so many elements to this recording a continuation of the Jazz/Fusion/Funk mode which is unique at the time since so many others were pursuing the pyrotechnical progressive melding of Rock and Jazz alot of which was missing the level of soulfulness and funkiness of this unit's recordings.

This recording is fun to listen to, makes you want to dance but also has much to just sit and listen to. The same personnel from the "Headhunters" recording is back save for Mike Clark replacing Harvey Mason on drums. Mike provides a different more propulsive sound. An excellent drummer who really cooks on this recording. Bill Summer and him work quite well together.

Bennie Maupin is Bennie Maupin with a tone reminiscent or perhaps he as the same influences as Wayne Shorter. An inventive soloist on both Bass Clarinet and saxophone. He provides all kinds of shades and colors. He is magnificent on "Butterfly" and burns on "Spank-A-Lee".

Herbie provides all those orignal touches and embellishments on keyboards. Clever, inventive, funky, driving, thoughtful. Whatever is needed.

"Palm Grease" is just out and out fun. Funky with a unique funky rhythm and clever breaks. Clark and Summers bring so much to this particular piece. To use a cliche, they just percolate.

"Butterfly" is as beautiful a ballad as you're going to hear in that particular style. As haunting as "Vein Melter" with it's own vibe. For me, it bore repeatedly listening before I moved on to the next cut when I first heard it and it is still fresh after all these years.

"Spankalee" is a tour de force. Funky, burning, rhythmically complex, clever with some outstanding drumming and Bennie just burns bringing the temperature way up.

"Actual Proof" is a showcase for electric keyboards. Herbie has rarely been in finer form.

This recording is a must have for me. Put it right next to your "Headhunters" recording. Since both will be in good company

5 out of 5 stars AHHH, NICE TO SEE ALL THE GREAT REVIEWS FOR THIS RECORD.......2006-09-21

Look no further. This is going to be your favorite Herbie Hancock record. This is really some soulful funky fusion Afro sheeit. In my teens, I got this record as a gift for Christmas one year from the funky white Jazz freak who lived across the street from me. It's still a smooth classic. Man, if you DON'T like this one, check your soul, brother.

Goes down well when you're seducing that foxy little soul sister who works in receiving. All you need to go with this is a lava lamp, some door beads, a black light, an afro-chick poster, some reefer, and a little Kalua and cream on ice. When you put this on, be sure and check out the album cover. Herbie is at the controls, man!!

ENJOY.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz-rock, funk for the deep thinker, and a ton of analog synthesizers.......2006-05-21

Although I enjoyed the Headhunters album (1973), this 1974 release is a bit more appealing - and it has nothing to do with the sci-fi cover art. In general, the playing on this album seems further out there and a bit more sophisticated, even though the only thing that changed was the addition of jaw-dropping virtuoso drummer Mike Clark (shows you just how important the drummer is I guess).

The musicians on this album include the keyboard wizard himself Herbie Hancock playing "traditional" jazz-rock instruments (Fender Rhodes electric piano and Hohner D-6 clavinet) along with just about every synthesizer ARP manufactured in 1974 (ARP Odyssey, ARP Pro Soloist, ARP 2600, and ARP String Ensemble); Bernie Maupin (soprano and tenor saxophone, saxello, bass clarinet, and flute); Paul Jackson (electric bass guitar); Paul Summers (percussion); and drummer extraordinaire Mike Clark (who went on to jam with English jazz rock group Brand X).

Stylistically, this album fuses elements of traditional (straight) jazz with both jazz-rock and funk. With respect to the funk styles, the funk is not the more pop-oriented style of Sly and the Family Stone. This funk is deeply sophisticated and utilizes just about every odd time signature under the sun, which is largely an artifact of Mike Clarks' nimble and intricate technique (Actual Proof is a great example). Furthermore, his emphasis on subtle hesitations within a given bar lends the music an almost "choppy" and "off-kilter" feel. In fact, based upon Mike's comments in the liner notes (that he wrote), he seemed unwilling to play anything straight - I for one am glad, because I do not care for straight funk that much. Come to think of it, I am a progressive rock fan for crying out loud. I should note that bassist Paul is also excellent and does not "swing" either - then again, he has to follow Mike and they are both locked in tight on this album.

With respect to the heavy use of synthesizers on this album, I personally like the sounds that Herbie gets. Although synthesizers may turn some jazz fans off, I am a bit more accepting because my musical tastes include both 1970's electronica and European progressive rock.

All in all, this is a superb album of jazz-rock/funk from one of the genre's greatest musicians. Recommended along with Headhunters (1973) and albums by other influential Miles Davis alumni including John McLaughlin/Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire, 1973); Joe Zawinul/Wayne Shorter (Weather Report - Black Market, 1976); and Chick Corea (Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior, 1976).

2 out of 5 stars boring, dull, mindless, common.......2006-07-30

It now appears to me that Amazon might do its buyers well by requiring those offering a review fill out some type of mandatory comparison chart, or something. Some of the adjectives used by the other 2 reviewers (hot, sexy, etc) need defining. I did not find the music on this CD any of the things those other 2 did. To me,it was more of just that boring, dull, unimaginative junk most gyms seem to play nowadays that someone told them would help motivate their members to work out better, NOT! If you really want some hot and, sexy music that can turn up the heat or, chill things down to a dreamy state try something from Claude Challe, Tantra Lounge, the Chilllounge CD, the Elemental Chill series, the Vintage Chill series, or some of the Naked Music, Cafe del Mar, or Hed Kandi stuff. Leave this one to your younger (like around 14 years old) sister to jump around in her room to. Sometimes I wonder if the sellers write these reviews just to push their stock. The price is right on this one, to bad the music on the CD was just such a bore!

4 out of 5 stars DO UPSCALE HAIR SALONS OFFER LAP DANCES, TOO?.......2006-05-29

... it's hard to believe that this slammin' house mix is designed for play in hair salons - close your eyes for a moment and you'd think it's Saturday night at your favourite strip joint. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for track 8, it's worth it!.......2005-01-16

Just picked this one up today. I was craving some good, deep, chunky house, and saw this in the listening station. Like most house comps these days, they reel you in with a name like Miguel Migs or Kaskade. Don't get me wrong, love both, but it's a bit of a marketing tool I think. Anyway, I was pleased with all the tracks at the store, then popped it into my car as I pulled away. What? Was this the same CD I was just listening to?? The tracks seemed to drag on and on... until I got to number 8. MAN ALIVE, this is SERIOUS, FRESH, FUNKY, and NEW house. Hoo ray to the house gods! In fact, I'm gonna pop it in now as I get ready to go out. GO JOCELYN!!!

5 out of 5 stars Number one album in my car cd player.......2005-01-26

I did buy this album for 5 dollars six months ago more or less. It was in a pawnshop ... a hell of a business! The best spent five dollars of all my life!! The story is that I can't pull out this cd from my car cd player. I can't do it because every time I try I miss this album!! In a so short space, some months, it has become one of the albums I love the most. It has grown inside me. It is flawless. Really deep and entertaining Jazz at the same time, of the highest caliber. Exceptional performances by all the musicians involved. Truly one of the best listenings I had recently. I own almost every bebop album ever recorded, and this is really one of those that actually I love the most and one that really always leaves me begging for more. Jay Graydon plays really well in the Jazz idiom. He's technical but melodical. This album is very well recorded and it's a Joy to listen. Absolutly five stars! No less!!

4 out of 5 stars Tight, but not too heady.......2001-11-04

Everyone on this CD plays bebop...except for Jay Graydon (guitar). The band is tight, the arrangements are well done, and the songs are "alternative melodies" to jazz standards (i.e., "(There Will Never Be) Another You" is re-titled "Oh Yes, There Will." Miles' "Four" is "4.2"). You'd probably have to be a bebop player yourself to understand my comment on Jay's playing: he "makes the changes," but he doesn't "play into and through" the chord changes. That is, he plays the "right notes" over the chord changes, but his phrasing doesn't anticipate the chords, nor do his lines always connect when key centers change. There are "quotes," and a few interesting melodic ideas in his playing, but he doesn't display the maturity and bebop vocabulary one would find in, say, Joe Cohn, Bruce Forman, or Tony Purrone. Then again, one suspects that Jay would readily admit he's not really a bebopper - the CD is a tribute to his late father, and a respectable tribute it is. And with Brandon Fields (sax) and Dave Weckl (drums), who could go wrong? Well worth repeated listenings, and well worth the (price).

I heard this disc thru a friend who told me that these guys were selling the disc online. I did'nt believe him. But here it is and here is my review. Though I have heard much worse, this is basically 80's metal rehashed. Cheesy songs with grandiose vocals. Obviously, there is a certain degree of musicianship. However, the musicians are not the problem, the songs are. Do these guys really take themselves seriously??? If they do not, then I give them 2-and-a-half stars. Guys-Don't quit your dayjobs!

I grew up with Rodney and went through many of his musical escapades with him while he tried to find where his niche was. He now has come a long way from the days gone by as well as the rest of the band (Hey guys whats up Keep rockin and THRUST ON!!!!) I feel a magic when i listen to their music because i have come to love it and to understand it. There are not many bands that can be as explosive and full of energy like them when they do a performance and it is alot of fun and very entertaining to see them live or to just listen to them on cd.Hey check em' out they kick @ss and ask questions later THRUST ON!!!!!!

After I heard the first track I knew this album was going to be as good as Spinal Tap or even Loverboy. Boy was I right! These guys blew me away! The lyrics are great, but the key is the awsome guitar riffs. It reminds me of the guitarist from Madison. Listening to Thrust is like having one of those dreams where you never want to wake up.

Great 80's fusion. This album must be the missing link between fusion and today's smooth jazz. An aggresive, visceral taste of Jazz, Rock and Latin. Highly recomended. I even checked out their website http://thrustmusic.net/, great later 90's music by the same group.I especially liked the song called NIGHT OF THE TIGER. Definitely deserves wider recognition.

Considering "Safe From Harm" was released almost 2 years ago, Narcotic Thurst have managed only 3 singles...all club-bangers making their fans more anxious for a full-length album. But for now, we have this mega maxi-single: 3 hit songs with their greatest remixes. In order of best to good, "Dawn" rules over "Harm" then "I Like It." "I Like It" is a good song but considering the weariness of the clubs playing it, and being on almost every dance compilation of 2004; I must succumb to "When the Dawn Breaks." Many dance songs come with their barrage of remixes, some good some bad. This song however has not had one bad remix to it at all. The Berhous mix is one of the best their and I'm glad to see it was included in this compilation. The song is club ready, as well as radio friendly: killer combo. For any fan of any of these songs, this is definately a worthwhile buy. Now what about that album...

5 out of 5 stars One Of the Best.......2005-04-06

    N. Thrust I first heard of when pete rauhofer remixed, "Safe from Harm" once only open and avialable to DJ's but you can have it now, as well as all the remixes and other tracks. This is a must CD...It is a true CD, but all mixes of the greatest work by N.T. the $ alone is worth the 10+ min Rauhofer mix of "Safe..." but tha extra mixes of there latter released songs are equally as great, you will be addicted as soon as you press the "play button" jason33305@aol.com Prof DJ

    4 out of 5 stars Indie-Dance revue.......2005-02-28

The first two songs "When the Dawn Breaks" and "I LIke It" are decent enough songs to listen or dance to, but the videos(aimed to please the males out there) are better than the songs alone. However, the CD "When the Dawn Breaks" is music files only, and you have to go to another source for the MPEG tracks. The third cut "Safe from Harm" is probably the biggest hit from Narcotic Thrust to date, but I haven't yet heard it. All said, I think it would be worthwhile picking up this CD with various mixes of the three songs listed.

3 out of 5 stars Not awful; but just doesn't climax like Klymaxx.......2007-05-20

The 80's R&B girl group Klymaxx made some irresistibly catchy songs such as "Meeting In The Ladies Room", "Divas Need Love Too", and "The Men All Pause".

This solo work by Klymaxx member Joyce "Fenderella" Irby just doesn't work as well. It sounds more like a hodgepodge of items from the Klymaxx reject bin rather than a self-contained creative masterpiece.

      4 out of 5 stars good debut.......2004-04-04

Fenderella is a former member of Klymaxx and this album is produced by Bernadette Cooper of KLymaxx. It's quite funky and actually reminds one of Vanity or Apollonia 6 . It's a gooy buy & good fun with fine melodies and good grooves

      3 out of 5 stars A GOOD START.......2003-09-27

Joyce "Fenderella" Irby, formerly of KLYMAXX set out to release her solo debut"Maximum Thrust" filled with dance laced r&b and poppy ballads. Irby has a sweet voice that could cross over(2 of KLYMAXX'S biggest pop hits were with her singing lead.

The hip single "Mr. DJ" (Featuring DOUG E. FRESH) was a top 10 r&b hit for her. The second single "Shes not my lover" was a clever little ditty about a man denying an affair after his girlfriend catches him. The hip hop rap dance of "Lets do it!" will have you jammin to the beat(a'la SALT-N-PEPA'S "PUSH IT").

Former bandmate BERNADETTE COOPER lends a hand on production for the catchy "Im Available". Another standout is the slick "Go Go Girl". With its funky laid back groove. Irby could be soppy at times with the title track and "Ill be There". Overall this was a decent start for her, eventhough she did not release anymore solo efforts. She handled most of the production with DALLAS AUSTIN (TLC). A decent effort by one of r&b's leading women in production at that time. Most of it pleases the ear and makes you wonder why we havent heard more from her?

      5 out of 5 stars MAGNESS+GRAYDON+BALLARD=GREAT AOR.......2003-11-13

One of the best Westcoast/AOR albums I have is this PLANET 3 "Music From The Planet".
The combination of producer/songwriter Clif Magness, guitar player Jay Graydon and keyboardis/producer Glen Ballard brings us a wonderful collection of songs.
The opening track, "Born To Love" mixes great guitar-driven verses with gentle keyboard moods, much like "Welcome To Love".
"Insincere" is one of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard.
Recorded live, this song shows the vocal range of Mr. Magness, and just how great these guys are playing live.
A wonderful album, with a song for everyone. Go for it...
