Customer Reviews:
A little late.......2003-11-29
I slept on this one, a good album first heard it in 90 in Germany, my cousin had it.
I'd love it at nine years old, and love it at 22 years old.
Tighest cut "Only At Night"
Another Masterpiece.......2001-11-15
From Freddie Jackson's vocals on "(Superwoman) Where Were You When I Needed You" to Vesta's lush tones on "I'll Be Good To You" and with Najee's skillful sax and flute throughout, "Tokyo Blue" is an outstanding CD. Najee continues to prove to be a force in the Smooth Jazz genre. This is one of my all-time favorite CDs (I have most of Najee's discography) and I promise you that it will be one of yours, too. Try it ... it'll be like an old friend.
Excellent Album.......1999-12-29
This is a very good CD. One of the best I heard from Najee. Mostly every track is a hit. I recommend this album to the fullest.

Can't go wrong with the tunes or the group.......2007-01-15
Based out of New York City and boasting some of the city's finest musicians, the Mingus Big Band is one of four ensembles (the others being the Mingus Dynasty, Mingus Orchestra, and Epitaph Orchestra) dedicated to its namesake's music.
"Live in Tokyo" features new arrangements of eight classic Mingus compositions which span three decades and are delivered with gusto and nuance by the fourteen-members of the MBB.
Half of the tunes are culled from the `50s. "Bird Calls," is Mingus' tribute to Charlie Parker and the gorgeous ballad "Celia," features Craig Handy as the lone soloist.
"Meditations" and "Ecclusiastics" were both composed in the `60s with the latter including trombonist Ku-Umba Frank Lacy fervently preaching from the pulpit of the blues.
The program is rounded out with "Opus Four" and "Free Cell Block F," two gems from the `70s, the latter of which was first performed by Mingus' last great quintet which included saxophonist George Adams and Don Pullen. Originally appearing on the album "Changes Two" with the expanded moniker of "Free Cell Block F, Tiz Nazi U.S.A.," the tunes' breezy theme belies its deadly-serious title and provides an excellent backdrop for inspired solos by Handy on flute, Conrad Herwig and Lacy on trombone, and Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax.
Outstanding!.......2006-09-30
In December of 1976, Charles Mingus and his quintet performed a series of concerts in Tokyo playing a stripped down version of big band arrangements by Mingus, and of those he admired. Thirty years later, the fourteen piece band that keeps the Mingus name as a legacy performed in Tokyo, playing fully orchestrated versions of the songs Mingus' quintet offered Japanese audiences a generation beforehand. Live In Tokyo is a document of this return engagement.
This is an amazing album. From the opening notes of "Wham Bam", to the final moments of "Ecclusiastics", The Mingus Big Band swings and sways through these songs like a typhoon of exalted joy blowing the roof off the famous Blue Note Club. The band is a Who's Who of jazz performers, featuring Eddie Henderson, Jack Walrath, and Alex Sipiagin on trumpets, Abe Burton, Craig Handy, Wayne Escoffery, Seamus Blake, and Ronnie Cuber on saxophones, Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Conrad Herwig, and Earl McIntyre on trombones and tuba, Dave Kikowski on piano, Kenny Davis on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums. Big band enthusiasts will find themselves exhausted by the extremely powerful horn arrangements on "Opus Four", "Free Cell Block F", and "Bird Calls"; Escoffery's solo sax on "Prayer for Passive Resistance", Handy's solo arrangement of "Celia" and the smooth, cool jazz of "Meditations", a quartet piece which includes Davis' brilliant bass lines, Handy playing a la Eric Dolphy on Melody Flute, Kikowski's piano and Abe Burton's frenetic sax.
There isn't one false note on Live In Tokyo, and like all great albums, the music stays with you. After listening to the album a third time yesterday, I found myself inadvertently pounding out the back beat by slapping my thighs while waiting for the bus. The album lingers on in my head even now, and I haven't played it since yesterday afternoon. Most importantly, the pleasure the musicians take in playing this date transcends the recording process as each piece pulls you in and makes you feel like you're sitting right there with them.
Live In Tokyo is a marvelous tribute to Mingus. It allows his work to breathe again; grow into directions Mingus would have challenged had he lived long enough. But even if you're not a huge Mingus fan, Live In Tokyo is an extremely solid work which will set your foot tapping and tempt you into turning your living room into a temporary swing club. It is a masterful work of art that allows Mingus to live again in the hearts of jazz aficionados' everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
AWESOME JAZZ SALUTE TO JAPAN.......2005-09-04
Five Stars are nice, but this one deserves Six Stars just to separate it from the rest of the field!! Highly recommended to all jazz fans. My favorite Horace Silver Quintet performance and it is probably resulted from a huge coincidence. Roy Brooks, the regular drummer, was not available and was temporarily replaced by John Harris, Jr and the results are stunning. Harris was a more perfect fit for these latin flavored songs with oriental heads, no disrespect to the awesome Mr Brooks. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder captured Harris' drums with a clarity that has the hi-hat cymbals sizzling with each fall. Ditto for the presense of tenor axe man Junior Cook who was spectacular throughout with a huge tone and excellent inventiveness. Amazing trumpeter Blue Mitchell and solid bassist Gene Harris complete this awesome quintet.
"Too Much Sake" is a surprise because, besides the title, it's hard-swinging latin-tinged jazz all the way. Notice how Cook lifts his solo to a new level in mid-flight, firing up the entire group. "Sayonara Blues" begins the real oriental journey and Horace gives it lots of compositional and solo room. "Toyko Blues" has a stunning Mitchell trumpet solo. But this is Horace's group and he solos with aplomb, funk, and angular inventiveness. The marvelous trio performance of "Cherry Blossom" is pure beauty from beginning to end, again with lots of breathing room. Horace shows off his unique approach to piano with a solo full of vaguely familiar quotes and fabulous phrases. "Ah, So" is pure joy with a complex head and lots of strong blowing by all concerned.
I consider this CD as the other bookend with Horace's spectacular "Silver's Serenade" with Joe Henderson on Tenor Sax. "Song For My Father" was great, but "Tokyo Blues" and "Silver's Serenade" are toppers. Six Stars for "Toyko Blues". An Essential CD.
The Tokyo Blues.......2005-07-08
This is one of several albums (60's & 70's) by Horace Silver that perfectly capture a creative genius at his peak. Tokyo Blues isn't as well known as Song for my Father or The Cape Verdean Blues albums -- but it's in the same smooth, exotic groove: elegant ensemble riffs, vibrant solos, deep moody trance energy, and wonderful piano work by Horace. Highly recommended.
Good, but not essential Silver.......2003-01-03
This was an interesting attempt by Silver to release a thematic record organized around an East Asian theme (the group had just returned from a successful Japanese tour), although it's questionable how authentic the Asian treatment is, and the solos are pretty much straight ahead hard bop. John Harris Jr. does a fine job filling in for Roy Brooks on drums - his creativity reminds me of Art Blakey, except he is less loud and doesn't dominate the overall sound. For example, listen to his playing behind the piano solo on "Tokyo Blues". The best song is "Ah! So", which features a complicated bebop line played out of time, with the rhythm section returning to support the solos. I give it four stars because there were only 5 tunes (one, "Cherry Blossom" is a pretty ballad written by a friend of Horace's), and while Mitchell and Silver deliver very good solos, it's not their best on record. However tenor player Junior Cook absolutely sizzles on this date, he sounds nothing like Hank Mobley who may have been one of his early influences.
Silver's Ode to Japan.......2000-10-28
As the review below states, "The Tokyo Blues" is one of Horace Silver's best albums. But with all due respect to Mr. Jones, let's write reviews that tell the people a little bit more about the CD they are thinking about buying. Recorded in July 1962, six months after a successful and impressionable tour of Japan, "The Tokyo Blues" is Silver's way of saying thank you for the generous hospitality he received while on the other side of the Pacific. Each of the disc's five tunes has a title that refers to an aspect of Japanese culture or tradition. But don't think Silver went so far as to incorporate Japanese music on this album, for this is classic hard bop from one of the master's of the genre. The band here is the famous Quintet of 1959-63 (Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor sax, Gene Taylor on bass) with one exception -- John Harris Jr. replaces Roy Brooks on drums, who was ill at the time of this session. While "The Tokyo Blues" may not quite live up to "Song For My Father," it is as good as anything else this quintet cut, including "Silver's Serenade," "Finger Poppin" and "Blowin' The Blues Away."
One of Horace's Best!.......2000-10-04
Absolute super classic! Every tune smokes! Ranks right up there with Song for My Father.

Super Live...........2004-03-05
This Is a great live recording with the unique Tony Williams band. One realy thinks of the Miles Davis kvintet from the 60'ties by hearing the tracks on this excelent cd. Tony williams was a great creative drummer , one of the best of all time. On this cd tunes like mutants on the beach , Citadel and Sister Sherryl realy caught my ears. There is so much energi and fire in this bands performance on these tunes that you realy can't believe it. Check this cd out if you can find it Second hand it is a killer for serious fans of music.

Get this CD!.......2006-12-24
This CD is a breath taking compellation of musicianship! Chick Corea and his Akoustic Band are master performers! This CD will take your breath away!
Definately vault worthy.......2004-04-17
Yes...it is costly, but you get what you pay for. The mix could be refined just a touch, but hey...it's a live recording. A very strong showing from Chic, John and Vinnie...very little stepping on each other toes in the soloing, though it seems that John won't let Chic vamp on his phrasings...but that could just be a joke between them. All in all...if you are fan of any of the three or all...you will be very happy to have this baby in your private collection.
Expensive, but well worth it!.......2000-04-18
Brilliant recording. It's great to hear Vinnie Colaiuta on drums this time, showing a different perspective. This trio had great chemistry, always in the pocket. Definitely one of Corea's better recordings.
