You can almost hear Simon & Garfunkel begin to like each other again on this now-legendary set. On September 19, 1981, the duo reunited for just the second time since their initial breakup and revealed a camaraderie that had apparently vanished years earlier. Not only do they reprise their shared hits, they also work in a few of Paul Simon's solo gems and a couple of telling covers--one from the Everly Brothers and one from Chuck Berry. The band includes the best session men around. By the time they get to the sincerity of "Old Friends" and the joy of "The 59th Street Bridge Song," you sense a relationship fully repaired. After this success, they even planned a studio record together--one that eventually became Simon's overlooked Hearts and Bones--few were surprised when it did not come to pass. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars a great live album............2007-06-08

THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK (recorded in 1981) is probably one of the best live albums I have heard. I originally saw Simon & Garfunkel's reunion concert in Central Park on television. It was a popular "pledge drive" show on PBS, with good reason. This performance was a reconciiliation for Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who had a fracas some years before (I think they call it "artistic differences" in polite conversation), and broke up their duo. You can feel a really renewed sense of camraderie from these two men. During the time that they broke up, leading up to their Central Park reunion, Paul Simon had recorded some moderately successful hits as a soloist, and interjects some of his tunes ("Kodochrome," as an example) with S&G's greatest hits.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sound great here, and sound like they are having a wonderful time playing to an audience that loves them. They open with "Mrs. Robinson," their hit from the soundtrack to THE GRADUATE...."coo coo cujoo," to paraphrase the lyrics. What a brilliant tune and no one sings it with more gusto than the men who made it famous! "Scarborough Fair," "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and many other numbers weave Simon's steadfast melody with Garfunkel's clear harmony. There are times that the two sound like they could have been minstrels, carrying messages of love, longing and rejection to the court of Camelot, and then you hear the rock riff and that vision is scratched! I think the word I am looking for is "timeless." This album delivers on every level and you will really feel like you were there for an historic reunion between two great vocalists. It's just a shame that the reunion feeling didn't last.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Album...brings you back........2007-03-26

Great music. Great sound. This is definitely an upbeat, happy live album. If you are a fan, this is a must-have. I am not a big fan, and I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps!.......2007-03-09

If you like Simon, Garfunkel, or Simon and Garfunkel at all, this CD should be the very first in your collection. Sheer beauty. Not studio quality, (it IS, after all, a live concert) but with such atmosphere, you really don't miss that.

1 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea.......2007-01-16

One good song, of course "The sound of silence", and the studio version is far better than this one. I am not a fan of the genre as you might expect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music........2006-09-11

Not only a great companion to anyone's Simon and Garfunkel collection, but also a great live CD in its own right, "The Concert in Central Park" is a wonderful and varied collection of songs sung by one of the greatest folk-rock duos of the 20th century.

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, after releasing a series of albums in the 60s and early 70s, broke up to pursue solo careers. For Paul, it was a brilliant move, eventually culminating in a Grammy for his 1986 masterpiece, "Graceland." For Garfunkel, it meant fading from the musical spotlight. That is, until the two reunited for this concert in New York City's "Central Park." The reunion spawned rumors that the duo was "getting back together." Although that wasn't really the case, they still managed to put on an amazing concert, thanks particularly to the energetic crowd and the superb backing band, laying heavy on electric keyboards and steady, no-frills drumwork.

Many of the songs of the set were "greatest hits," of sorts, from the duos early albums. "Sound of Silence," "The Boxer," and many others find their way into the setliest. Particularly of note is the concert opener, "Mrs. Robinson," far more funky and electric than the studio version. Also, the album is packed with many famous hits from Simon's solo years.

If you're already a Paul Simon or Simon and Garfunkel fan, you can't go wrong with this album. The songs sound fresh and fit nicely in the huge live setting. If you're not familiar with the duo, this album is a great place to start given its abundance of hits.

5 out of 5 stars An alltime classic.......2007-05-18

There's just not enough good things to say about this album. The way he switched up all his classics such as throwing in a jazz piano interpretation of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or the hand drumming on "Me and Julio", to the extended version of "The Coast" "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes" "Proof" and "Cool Cool River" This recording is going down as one of the all time greatest live recordings in the history of American Music.

5 out of 5 stars Concert in the Park Review.......2007-01-19

I bought this cd for my husband for christmas. It is one of his favorite albums and he really enjoys listening to it.
I ordered it only a few days before christmas and still received it on time.
There was a problem with the case being broken, but instead of delaying the shipment I was sent a replacement case. I thougth it was great that someone in customer service or shipping knew that it was important to deliver the cd on time (guessing that it was a christmas gift). The service was great and the music is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live album.......2007-01-05

I was 16 years old when this concert occured. If I could travel back in time, I would put myself smack dab in the front row of this show. What a seemingly magical concert. The song selection was fantastic at the time. Although I'm partial to Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints era Paul Simon music, every song on this disc is fantastic. I'm sure most true music fans have tried to compile a top 5 or 10 favorite album list, for me, this disc and Rhythm of the Saints are each in my top 10. I'm rambling on, but if you want a great live album and a good overview of some of Paul Simon's music, pick this up. I can only hope that the DVD for this show is released. I have the VHS tape, but I fear what time will do to the quality and longevity of the video.

5 out of 5 stars a great album.......2006-03-25

this is a great album: great songs, lots of energy, and a band that sounds like it enjoying playing. It's a good mix of classic songs with fun jams (think Paul Simon meets String Cheese Incident). It fun weekend/Summer music which will have you dancing and singing along.

4 out of 5 stars ****1/2 - great live album and a fine career overview .......2005-06-12

Equipped with the unwieldy handle of "Paul Simon's Concert In The Park, August 15, 1991", this double CD finds Paul Simon backed by most of the New York session musicians and the native musicians from South Africa and Brazil who had accompanied him on "Graceland" and "The Rhythm Of The Saints".

Clocking in at almost two hours, "Concert In The Park" features excellent live versions of songs like "Graceland", "She Moves On", and "Me And Julio Down By The School Yard". Most of the arrangements stick close to the studio recordings, except for the fact that Simon has toned down the Brazilian percussion that dominated the "Saints" recordings, and re-done "Cecilia" African-style.
Paul Simon sings with style and conviction all the way through, and some of these songs are definitely better than the studio versions...just listen to the exquisite "Born At The Right Time" or the elegant "She Moves On".

The sound is very good, and "Concert" moves seamlessly between S&G-material and latter-day solo stuff. "Still Crazy After All These Years" has never sounded better, and the nine-minute "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes" is a real treat.
Paul Simon fans should enjoy this fine, mellow set, and there is a lot to like for casual listeners as well.
This show was filmed, by the way, and released by Warner Brothers. It's not yet available on DVD, but you can still find a copy of the original video casette.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Wind Orchestra.......2001-02-20

I know of no composer or arranger who writes more beautifully for wind orchestra than Percy Grainger. It is a difficult medium, much harder than an orchestra to make sound terrific. This is probably due to the lack of a single homogenous sound equivalent to the orchestra's strings. The woodwinds are too diverse in timbre, and the brass generally can't sustain (physically) the constant playing such a role demands. But Grainger consistently rises above these problems and gets the most gorgeous sounds from the group. Furthermore, he writes fascinating counterpoints and the whole is constantly filled with eccentric touches of harmony, orchestration, rhythm, and the like.

This recording, with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, is superbly played. Although one may quibble at times with such things as an occasionally too-wide saxophone vibrato, those are minor indeed. In particular, the classics of the wind orchestra literature, Irish Tune from County Derry and Linconshire Posy (the movements Harkstow Grange and Rufford Park Poachers stand out even in this august company), are magnificent in every respect. Also worthy of note is the Colonial Song, with its beautiful sonorities; and the vibrant percussion of The 'Gum-Suckers' March. This CD is a must-have for anyone interested in wind music, in the art of arranging, or simply in imaginative and fascinating music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Nice.......2000-04-07

This ensemble really does a good job playing on this CD--The Lads of Wamphray, Irish Tune from County Derry and Molly on the Shore in particular. Personally, I don't care for their interpretation of Lincolnshire Posy. However, it's still some great playing. Wonderful job!

5 out of 5 stars They were born to play Grainger........1999-05-24

I have been playing Grainger since my freshman year in high school and never have I heard Grainger played with so much passion as when I listened to this recording of the Royal Northern College of Music. Lincolnshire Posy shines brighter than even the Eastman Wind Ensemble's greatest rendition. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Shaw Brothers one of the best folk music groups ever!.......2004-06-17

If you like the folk music from the '50s and '60s like the Kingston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Brothers Four and all the other great groups then you simply have to get this album. Apparently they are a little known group from New England but well know in that area. I just love the folk ballad style of the above groups. I don't know how I missed the Shaw Brothers back then in my misbegotten youth but I did. I stumbled onto them on a folk album tribute to America narrated by Johnny Cash that had a number of different performers. I was absolutely floored when I heard the Shaw Brothers. Their voices are still unbelievable even today. On this album they do some serious songs like Joan Baez (Who Speaks for Me)some light hearted stuff like I'D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING, KISSIN' FROG, DRINK UP THY ZIDER and THREE LEGGED MAN. GENTLE ANNIE rivals any ballad the New Christy Minstrels have done. My favorite folk album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great music & value.......2007-01-09

I got this set to replace my old tape of the Concert in Central Park. Since this set cost less than just the Concert in Central Park CD alone, it's a great value right there. I grew up listening to the Concert in Central Park so I prefer that CD to the 20 Greatest Hits. I like their live sound much better than their studio sound. If you're a fan - get this set.

With the addition of Ken Nichol to replace Bob Johnson, Steeleye hasn't missed a beat. Keeping this short, I'll just say that the current lineup covers the gamut from its earlier days (eg: King Henry) through its newer material (eg:Sammain) and have never sounded better. No Steeleye fan will be disappointed.

I do want to point out that this concert is also available on a DVD (Amazon-UK)! It's in PAL format though, so be sure you have the right hardware.
