Editorial Reviews
Two greats interact here, in recordings from 1952-54, with stunning intuition. Brubeck, as always, makes a virtue of his limited fleet-fingeredness. He has no need to hurry in the company of Paul Desmond, an alto saxophonist akin to Getz--light and never imbalanced. His and Brubeck's musical rapport had been forged in Brubeck's earlier octet and would continue for many years in his sterling quartet. The program here emphasizes standards. There is light combo support on some tracks. For "On a Little Street in Singapore," Brubeck and Desmond take a thoughtful, fragile jaunt through foreign streets. In "Trolley Song," the trolley bell sounds in Desmond's ringing horn. On "My Heart Stood Still," the pianist is alone, hammering heartily in his folksy, front-parlor way. --Peter Monaghan

WHY DIDN'T THEY TUNE THE PIANO??????.......2002-07-25
Stunning.......2002-05-18
I remember the first time I heard anything from this, it was on the old NY jazz station WRVR. Although I was a Brubeck/Desmond fan, I did not recognize either of them as there was no bass or drums. When they announced it, I immediately bought the LP.
As brilliant as Paul Desmond was, there is no sax player in my knowledge that sounds anything like him. Like a Bill Evans, a Watrous, a Basie, all he has to play is one note and you know it is him. Nowhere is that more evident than in this CD.
Brubeck and Desmond shared a friendship for many years, going back to when Brubeck tried to join Desmond's band in the army. He has talked many times on how special it was and how fascinating it was to do duets with Paul. He talks about how hard he tried to "comp" behind Paul as it made Paul play that much better.
So you can feel the fun these two great men had in doing this.
The best cut, IMHO, is the final one, "You Go To My Head". That was the whole start of the project, they wound up doing a set of duets on a cruise. This cut is a recording from that cruise.
Do NOT listen to this CD as background music or while doing something else. You will miss the subtleties of it. Do listen to it, preferably on good headphones with the rest of the world locked out.

Seven tracks, dormant since recorded live in Mexico City in 1967, spotlight the Brubeck Quartet in fine form. Average track time is about eight minutes, which means that the band stretches substantially more than on studio LPs. That's especially welcome from alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, whose subtle playing was sometimes lost in the context of shorter material, but who radiates warmth and fascination at length here. On Brubeck's "Koto Song," for instance, his lovely, restrained approach to the Asian-tinged melodic material is stunning; can't say the same for Brubeck's rather drippy faux Orientalist solo on the same tune, though, nor for his playing in various other spots, which often drags things down. "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a corny choice, and it's played as such--probably a ploy to please middlebrow palettes--but again Desmond saves it from dreardom; the obligatory "Take Five" is included, as is "Forty Days," a not-dissimilar excerpt from a Brubeck oratorio. --John CorbettCustomer Reviews:

Best Brubeck Album... bar none!.......2007-02-18
Groundbreaking.......2006-03-27
"Elementals" boosts this CD to Five Stars due to its groundbreaking fusion of jazz and symphonic composition. Since first hearing this piece more than a quarter-century ago, I've stuck with my impression that Brubeck has fashioned a wonderfully mesmerizing history of humankind through music. The opening, almost primordial in nature, segues into a Biblical-sounding passage artfully played by 'King David', then slides into a musical evocation of the Middle Ages, whereupon both the tempo and counterpoint between the Quartet and the Eastman orchestra hasten. Moving into the just-completed century, there are strains of swing, beebop and what I'll call missile-age musical pyrotechnics. It all comes to one crashing denouement, leaving you to wonder, 'What's next for Man'?
If you gave me the choice of listening to "Take Five", "Blue Rondo" or "Elementals" just one more time, I'd hesitate ... then choose "Elementals". It's that powerful and intriguing.
STILL GREAT OVER TIME.......2006-01-12
As a bonus, the CD contains a shorter version of the piece with just the quartet that precedes the fully orchestrated recording. You don't have to be a composition major to appreciate the structure that Brubeck created in this exercise in theme development and variation. I still hear things for the first time after all these years.
I wish '' TIME NEVER CHANGED''.......2004-09-02
Dave brubeck could never fit under any category of jazz ; he's a whole
category on his own .This album is really very good ; it swings at times
and it's very melodic at others showing Brubeck's classical influence specially in the last song '' elementals'' which sees the quartet supported by a full orchestra that swings so hard.
My favourite track is the opening one '' IBERIA'' it belongs to the dave brubeck series of masterpieces.I would recommend this album to any brubeck fan and i would suggest also to try '' BRANDENBURG GATE REVISITED'' or '' BOSSA NOVA USA'' ; '' TIME IN '' and '' THE DIALOGUES FOR JAZZ COMBO FROM THE BERNSTEIN PLAYS BRUBECK '' or the very rare ''JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF THE USA ''

5 `ll Get You 7 ~11/4 & 13/8 To Boot!.......2007-06-23
The excellent liner notes, accompanied by several fine & rarely seen photos of Brubeck's Quartet will fill you in on all the details if you care. Personally I find all the minutia about these pieces quite interesting.
What sparks the interest though is the fine & unusual quality of the music. I was astonished when I learned in College that "Time Out" (NOT on this disc) was the first Jazz composition not in 4/4 time. I'd always thought Jazz was all about improv & stretching the limits, doing what wasn't expected, to literally "Jazz" the music. How then could it be in the vast catalogue of J Music no one had strayed outside the conventions of Standard Time??? It turns out 13/8 & 11/13 times are more then a little daunting to play.
But don't think for a minute that's what makes this music of interest. There's nothing lost if you don't know a Time Signature from a John Hancock. Every track Brubeck recorded on his Quintet of Time Change experiments is worth hearing, & all, including everything on "Time In Outer Space" is enjoyable as any Jazz ever to listen to repeatedly. In fact the music flows so effortlessly from Paul Desmond's Alto sax & Brubeck's piano, you may be excused for thinking this is merely background music rather then one of the pinnacles of 60's American Jazz. Certainly these guys play with a verve rarely equaled by players who wouldn't be regarded as the inventors of Modern Jazz (i.e.: Monk, Coltrane, Miles).
Paul Desmond on his own I've never found to be much of a player, I know lots of people would strongly disagree, & I certainly haven't heard much of his other recordings since they never captured my imagination. But in this Quartet setting he blows a solid line on every single track. I can only think there's something very special about the chemistry of the Brubeck Quartet.
If you like 50's & beyond Jazz at all you can't be disappointed by the "Time In Outer Space" recordings. Worth listening to time & again.

Almost two for the price of one.......2004-06-20
On "Perdido" and "The Way You Look Tonight" you can hear the excitement their inventive and utterly committed playing generated in the enthusiastic Oberlin audience. Desmond in particular plays like a man possessed and his solo on the latter track is one of his sharpest and most brilliantly sustained on record. He is more typically smooth and self-contained - but still flowing with ideas - on the ballads, "These Foolish Things" and "Stardust", also from the Oberlin concert. On the first of these, Brubeck springs one of his dramatic surprises, moving from a quietly lyrical opening to his solo into a more intense and anguished (or angry?) section before subsiding into the quiet mood he began with. It's one of his more unusual performances, contrasting with the open-hearted romanticism of his approach to "Stardust".
Those who are not put off by that kind of romanticism from a `jazz' group will recognise "For All We Know" - from the Pacific College concert - as a small masterpiece of inspired melodic invention. I've commented in more detail on this and other tracks in my Amazon review of the Pacific College album, so I'll say no more about them here, except that "All the Things You Are" is another Brubeck Quartet masterpiece featuring one of the pianist's very best solos.
Five stars for the music. However, in order to compile this generous selection from two classic albums, the producers have left out two of the original tracks - "How High the Moon" from Oberlin and "Laura" from Pacific College. The first is another exciting up-tempo performance (after a deceptively calm opening chorus); the second is a ballad feature for Brubeck, discreetly accompanied by bass and drums, and notable for a kind of impressionistic mood and style reminiscent of some of Debussy's piano pieces. Both tracks in their contrasting ways are worth having. So the prospective buyer has the kind of choice which `compilation' CDs face you with: whether to forego `completeness' for an apparent bargain or to buy the two separate albums. You can probably guess what my recommendation would be.
Redundant.......2003-02-03
