Album Description

VNV Nation's last album, Matter and Form (2005), was hailed by critics for its high-impact array of tone and sound, from hard hitting anthems to euphoric symphonies. In April 2007, the band is poised to release its next album, Judgement, which promises to be their most powerful and unique release to date. Having already broken the boundaries between industrial and other alternative music styles on Matter and Form, VNV Nation take this idea to new heights by creating a sound that is a collision of ever present insight, energy, emotion, past and future. From its fast pace, pounding bass-line and melody to its electric-guitar like synth sounds and Ronan Harris's thought provoking vocals, "Nemesis" rings through as one of VNV's most aggressive anthems to date. "Testament," which could be described as an electronic-indie anthem, "The Farthest Star" and "Carry You" provide a bright, hopeful outlook, while "Movement" presents a dark trance flavor to the band's ever expanding repertoire of song possibilities. The omniscient "Descent" sweeps in with dark electronic rhythms and lyrics that describe complete devastation, giving the yin to the yang of the ethereal ballad "Secluded Spaces" that makes you feel like nothing in the world could be more beautiful. With every album, VNV Nation manages to tear down more and more musical boundaries. Judgement will be their greatest achievement thus far.

3 out of 5 stars They have been consistently better........2007-07-10

If you are a fan of VNV Nation from the days of Praise the Fallen and Empires then about half of the tracks on this album are for you. However the other tracks are experiments in a trend that they have been following since Futureperfect. I am still not sure how I feel about this. I enjoy electronic music, but I feel that there is something amiss with Futureperfect and Matter + Form. All the same, I would have to say that for the die-hard VNV fan this will definitely be a good addition to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars I like it........2007-06-26

I don't think this album is nearly as good as Empires, but certainly don't think it's crap. I have grown to love VnV Nation. I will admit that sometimes I wish that I had a clearer understanding of what the lyrics are about, but I think I get it. I have my interpretation and I guess that's the only interpretaion that matters. VnV Nation make excelent Future pop music that is great music to drive to, dance to, or play around your house while your cleaning. High energy trance beats with pasionate singing and dark atmosphere. Great production by Ronan Harris, and another good album. I'm not dissapointed, but there are quite a few people who are.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-06-14

This CD is wonderful for any VNV Nation fan. I've listened to this album time and time again and truly a great album.

I highly suggest purchasing this album!

5 out of 5 stars Another great VnV Nation album!!.......2007-06-13

This is one of those bands that pisses people off because they have become populur in the "underground" scene. The truth be, VnV Nation have never released a radio hit in the States, never a top 40 video, never a Rolling Stone cover, never, never, never...nada! This band keeps pumping out solid electro/synth pop albums that pack out every dance floor in the goth/industrial club scene accross the map. This album is no exception to thier greatness. All of the songs are deep, emotionally charged, introspective, metaphoric, and classic future pop anthems that you want to play over and over again in your CD player. This is the most important band in the entire future pop genre!!!!!! (Just in case you didn't allreday know).

5 out of 5 stars Judgement hitting it off to one of thier better albums.......2007-06-13

All around this album is very well put together, Nemesis (song 6) is especially good.

5 out of 5 stars My First Time.......2007-04-01

I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.

1 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-03-12

I hated the music on this CD. The only track I liked on the whole CD was track 2 and I love it - I play that track over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack from a forgettable film. .......2007-01-10

If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.

Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.

For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Forgot about this one.......2006-02-20

The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.

5 out of 5 stars The only good rap-rock ever recorded.......2005-12-11

Good rap-rock is rarer than giant diamonds. This here is the Koh-i-Noor of the genre. What?

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-10-01

As a score collector, I got this with anticipation. I'm not dissapointed, great score. It is adventurious and even a touch of drama. I don't think Brad fiedel has done many scores for movies, or at least that's what I think but he hit the mark for the T-2 score. Very fun to listen too, a score that matters.

5 out of 5 stars Terminator 2 - Judgment Day: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2005-08-27

Brad Fiedel's trademark music for James Cameron's fantastic SF thriller TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY is one of my all-time favourite movie soundtracks. Starting off with the instantly recognizable "Terminator" theme, Fiedel eschews traditional techniques in favour of a far more impressive array of techno-rock frenetic tempo lineage that works just as well in the feature film as a stand alone piece. Tracks like "Helicopter Chase" and Hasta La Vista Baby" are the highlights of this impressive disc.In a time when the more favourable choice for movie soundtracks was artsists who used their invovlement with the film's musical department to publicise their latest tune, this is something of an oddity, since all tracks are simply orchestral. Pleasing too, considering this is not the usual decision for films of this genre. Overall, a great score and indisposable for movie composer collectors.

4 out of 5 stars A great score-but missing something.......2005-06-06

Brad Fiedel does a great job scoring this film. I have always enjoyed listening to it. I am however dissapointed that the best part of the film (mall/canal chase) wasn't included on the release. Other than tha it's a terrific score!

5 out of 5 stars Excelent .......2005-01-10

Why the HELL is this cd out of print????? Maybe they are remastering it who knows. But you have ALIENS, LABYRINTH, NEVERENDING STORY for christs sake, and all of those are still being made. How is this cd out of print???? I want a brand new copy.

Album Description

Pianist-composer Andrew Hill remains one of the most original voices in jazz. This complex, but appealing 1964 date with Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Elvin Jones is one of early important albums that built his reputation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2006-01-31

Blue Note had a knack for discovering off-kilter piano players. First it was Monk who was initially ridiculed and sold badly but after a decade or so people began to understand that he really was something else and he is now (rightfully) considered one of the most important composers and improvisers in jazz ever. After that it was the underrated Herbie Nicols, who like Monk, initally suffered total public indifference. Nowadays however, Nichols is namechecked by tons of musicians and an "underground" legend. Unfortunately, he never lived to see this. Last in this line was Andrew Hill. Frank Lion loved his work and let him record no less than 5 records in approximately 6 months. unfortunately they sold very bad and, with the exception of Point of Departure, has been mostly out of print in the latest 40 years. This, along with the fact that most of Hills later records have been on smaller european companies and in solo-settings, has meant that not many people have heard him. Now, however, Blue Note have no less than 4 of these masterpieces in print (the only one missing from this initial bunch of records is the somewhat weaker "Smokestack"). Hopefully this means that Hill will finally get the recognition he deserves. That he will have a new record out on Blue Note soon (featuring Charles Tolliver, another forgotten great!!!) doesn't make matters worse.

About this record, it doesn't have any horns on it which may turn some people off but the compositions are uniformly brilliant (arguably my favourite Hill record in terms of the written material)and the interplay between Hill, Hutcherson and the always wonderful Richard Davis is incredible. The added bonus is that the drummer on this record is Elvin Jones. Hill usually recorded with drummers like Roy Haynes, Joe Chambers and Tony Williams who all have a more quirky, "skittery" way of playing drums compared with Jones muscular and extroverted style. The contrast between Jones (who doesn't overplay at all, he sounds really sympathetic to the other musicians) and the others more introverted stylings gives this record a unique sound compared with Hills other records from this era. It arguably also makes the record more accessible for newcomers to Hills music which makes this a great introduction!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Candidate for Remix and Re-release.......2005-09-19

Andrew Hill's _Judgment_ is easily one of his masterpieces. Like the long-deleted _Andrew!!!_ (finally being released on CD in October '05), its disappearance from Blue Note's CD catalogue in the early '90s was the source of considerable bewilderment for Hill's devotees. (I was fortunate to get that earlier release in the short period it was available.)

That bewilderment was heightened by the relatively poor remastering of the earlier CD release. For years, I was frustrated by the low recording levels and the whispery opening bass figure of the first track, "Siete Ocho." Considering the way that figure anchors the performance, it was disheartening to hear it fade into the mix. Now Rudy Van Gelder has given it some punch, thereby restoring all the power to the track as a whole.

The rest of the CD has brightened as well. Overall, this is not a dramatic improvement over the earlier release, save for the aforementioned "Siete Ocho," but it certainly beats it, hands down.

This is truly one of the essential recordings of any genre. I have played it nearly every month for the last dozen years or so. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Landmark "Judgment!".......2005-08-17

Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure" is an undisputed modern jazz masterpiece, but in the last twenty years, the average fan would have been hard pressed to locate a second Blue Note album by the pianist. Yes, many of his albums have been available as limited edition titles in the Connoisseur Series, or via Mosaic Records, but only with the recent reissue of "Black Fire" (see my review) and "Judgment!" in the RVG Edition Series, have more Hill discs finally received a permanent place in the EMI catalog. This glorious January 8, 1964 session features Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass and Elvin Jones on drums performing six of the pianist's original compositions (including an alternate take of "Yokada, Yokada"). While not as densely layered as the multi-horn stylings of "Departure" (made just two months later on March 21 by the way), this material is just as exploratory and enjoyable. Hutch and Hill have chemistry right from the start, and they would build on this success many times in the following decades, the next being the still out-of-print "Andrew!" from June of '64. Needless to say, frequent collaborator Davis and Jones are both in top form. Judge for yourself, but I certainly wouldn't pass on "Judgment!"

5 out of 5 stars A Great British collection.......2005-10-05

This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.

One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.

Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.

The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).

One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29

If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

The score for Terminator 2, is more than just an upgrade of the original material, it is an expansion of the musical landscape presented in the truly unique sound of the first film. One thing I have never gotten is why film score reviewers seem content to bash Brad Fiedel's Terminator scores, praiseing his main Terminator theme, but denouncing the rest of the score as simply "noise." Terminator 2 is more human and emotional than the first score, but that has to do with the growth of the Terminator character in the film as it begins to understand the nature of human emotion. Aside from having two brilliant reprises of the original Terminator theme we are given a wealth of new and experimental material that does for synthesizers what Jerry Golsmith did for precussion in the original Planet of the Apes. Terminator 2 has a unique sound that no other film has duplicated. Tracks like "Trust me" and "I'll be back" are real action highlights, while "desert suite" gives a sense of impending doom and abiance that fits the scene like a glove. Fiedel knows what he is doing with this score since listening to it conjurs so many memories of the corresponding scenes it makes you realize that the score for T2 is a vital part of the film. It is powerful, unique, experimental, at times touching, and well worth owning to any film score collector.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

      4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.
