3 out of 5 stars Not bad!.......2006-09-13

I enjoyed this cd. It is another decent one by this very talented musician. I really like the first 3 songs on here. For diehard DK fans: get this one.

3 out of 5 stars Koz= interesting just not this time around.......2005-07-24

I got this album b/c of Koz' music. This cd isn't one that I would recommend. I thought the album was ok. Its nothing to rave about. As far as the tracks there are listenable tracks but nothing that will make you want to rush out and buy the album. I liked the following tracks: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 10.

4 out of 5 stars Truly something off the beaten path in smooth jazz.......2004-11-18

And I was still a newbie in the world of smooth jazz whn I noticed. This is quite a refreshing break from the typical electronically-backed smooth jazz you hear everywhere. What's typically backed by electronic drum beats and keyboards and synthesizers, is now carried out by acoustic strumming, acoustic drumming, acoustic piano, and even a banjo and violin appearence here and there. There is some electric guitar, but it doesn't at any time really take over the music, which electric guitar tends to do in most music. It's clean and clear, and gets out of the way when it needs to. The Celtic flavor of Follow Me Home really was a nice suprise in this album. The whole song is great, but it really shines through near the end once it starts to really pick up. I highly recommend this CD to anyone, if you aren't familiar with smooth jazz or Dave Koz, try it. You might find something new, you never know!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite jazz artist!.......2002-04-11

I've loved Dave Koz since I saw him in perform in Richard Marx's band. I bought his first 2 CDs but when this came out I thought that this was better by far.

I like Dave over other sax artists because he tends to have a more upbeat style while mixing in some mellow tunes. My favorite tracks are "I'm Ready", "That's the Way I Feel About You", which features him on vocals, and "Flat Feet". In fact, with the latter, I can see him having fun with that song. I even e-mailed him about it, asking about why he titled it that and he graciously replied saying he has flat feet, which he inherited from his dad!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing ................................2006-10-01

I first heard stephen watts saxophonist from " Dotsero " play the song " Jeepers Creepers" live on B.E.T jazz 2 years ago, when I heard this
I remember saying to myself what a great song after seeing the rest of the concert I decided I was going to buy the cd I bought the cd off of the dotsero website, when it arrived I listened to the cd and not only " jeepers creepers" but the whole cd was great every song was well written and each song had something new while still keeping the "Dotsero style " Jeepers creepers" and "private thompson" are great smooth jazz songs the song "After Hours " is a smooth jazz ballad with a rock groove. the last song on the cd is " Make it last" a great song to end the cd with. overall this a great " Smooth Jazz " cd mixed with elements of rock and funk , this would be a great addition to any jazz or smooth jazz collection .!!!!!!!!

Melissa spends more of her life enjoying it - or at least feeling it - than she does recording her experiences. That's too bad for us because she blends Michelle Shocked, the Grateful Dead, and more styles I'm not familiar with, with Southwest river runner philosophy and protest in a wonderful way. Wishing for more.

4 out of 5 stars Most certainly high up in the mountains, sitting on a porch or stomping your feet at a Saturday night get together in the barn.......2005-11-25

A review from Mark Gensman (Ground Zero Sound) written for the 800+ member Nwbluegrass Yahoogroup:

I got this CD in today and rather than take my normal sweet time, I decided to spend some time with it this afternoon.

First off, for you old timey, traditional bluegrass lovers. This is your CD. Even though there are several original cuts on the disc, the flavor is most certainly high up in the mountains, sitting on a porch or stomping your feet at a Saturday night get together in the barn.

The band is:
Patrick Walsh on upright bass
Jamie Dawson on mandolin
Lynda Wittig on guitar
Kyra Moore on banjo
Matt Hooper on fiddle

Kickin Grass is a group that started out backing a cloggers group and has since taken off on their own to great acclaim. They are from North Carolina and from the liner notes are getting popular in the festival circuit. I can see why they would be a great live band.

The CD appears to be a representation of how the band really sounds. But that brings up my only complaint and it really has nothing to do with the band. The overall tone and volume of the vocals was at times shrill and frequently distorted. If it was a case where the instruments were also distorted, I would think I got a bad CD, but the instruments were warm and present, while the vocals were not mixed or mastered properly at all and the volume of the vocals was uneven throughout the CD.

That said, as long as you play this CD at fairly low volume, the sonic problems may not be noticable..but about the band..

Really nice arrangements, good pickers and lots of energy which is hard to do in a studio. Here is the breakdown:

1. Left This Town - A nicely done original with a lot of traditional flavor. I really like the songs this band writes and they play with that barn dance energy that works well here.

2. Life Is Not A Guarantee - A very well done original ballad with strong old timey flavor.

3. Backroads - Another original. A great fiddle break and another up tempo bluegrass style romp.

4. Jokers Wild - Nice instrumental. This tune gives me an idea of how good they must be live, since it sounds like they are playing the song like they always do it.

5. Hello Trouble - Good bluegrass music with this uptempo spirited tune. Good fiddle break and nice tone on the instruments.

6. Sparrow - Another original with good lead vocal part. The Banjo is very nicely recorded and is actually "warm" if that isn't an oxymoron. The harmony vocals get quite shrill and a little distorted in spots. Great
arrangement.

7. Clinch Mountain Backstep - A well done traditional bluegrass tune. Very interesting doubled mandolin break that stands out from the other instrument breaks.

8. Little Piece Of Cornbread - Another excellent original written by Lynda Wittig. Very interesting mix with the vocals way behind the instruments and the words hard to discern at times. The instrument breaks are quite a bit louder than the lead vocal which is interesting at best.

9. Fire On The Mountain - This reminds me of a Neil Young ballad. Very tasty instrument backing and the breaks are really well done. The lead vocal is slightly distorted but I could see Neil Young doing this song.

10. Morning Train - Yet another original from Lynda Wittig. I must admit I am very impressed with the way this lady writes songs. They are very well crafted. This song sounds like a traditional Appalachian Mountain porch ballad with great harmony. The vocals are really, really loud and slightly
distorted (again) and uneven, but that does not mean the band didn't sing a great song.

11. Troubled Life - An original bluegrass style gospel song. Good harmonies but that dreaded distortion shows up again on certain parts of the lead vocal.

12. Black Mountain Flag - Traditional tune done well. The instrumental songs are well mixed, with good balance and nice tone for all the instruments.

All in all, a good band for those who prefer traditional bluegrass with old timey flavor and high lonesome vocals.

I would enjoy this band live, and I only wish more attention would have been given to the production.

The CD was produced by Steve Dilling of IIIrd Tyme Out and recorded at West Station Records. (Mark Gensman, Ground Zero Sound)

5 out of 5 stars excellent punkrawk and roll talent.......2005-04-21

I've been around the scene for 15 years - in my current jaded days it's not often that I find a band who smacks of originality and real talent. The New Breed, despite an unoriginal band name [though how original can band names get these days?], play a excellent, original punk inspired by SLF and a maritime'eshe sound. It's as accomplished and exciting as the Dropkick Murphy's first release on Hellcat 7 years ago. The singer's voice is melodic yet with a gruff edge - the lyrics are solid and well-writtne - and the choruses are catchy and well-placed. Friendly Fire, Bombs for Oil, Starting Over, and Smoking Gun are some of the best songs I've heard in years. The rest are not as strong as these three, yet are more than well worth multiple listens. As this band picks up in popularity, I just hope they don't slack in their quality of productivity. They certainly seem to be on the right trajectory now.
