Editorial Reviews

From the Label
The concept of Who's Who In Jazz was as natural and inviting as a clear, invigorating spring day. Why not assemble an array of great jazz figures in relaxed settings and let them groove? Not only would the resultant music greatly enrich our permanent record of jazz, but sessions would also enable the rising number of jazz listeners in the 70's to really focus on a sizable number of the most influential and durable improvisers in the music. The idea was Lionel Hampton's, and who else would be the most logical implementer of the idea? Hampton, after all, has already shown the way in a historic series of small combo recordings in a six-volume Bluebird set. These all-star dates, with participants ranging from Coleman Hawkins and Johnny Hodges to Dizzy Gillespie, have lost none of their zest and freshness through the years because Hampton knew whom to select and also knew how to create an easy mood that let everyone stretch out to a much larger extent than had been possible for these musicians at other recording sessions. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Product Description
It was almost a decade ago that an off-the-cuff suggestion by legendary vibraphone master Lionel Hampton inspires the Who's Who In Jazz album series, a classic collection of recordings the likes of which can't be found under any other label.

These aren't after-the-fact compilations of existing recordings. These are performances done expressly for the Who's Who In Jazz series by artists known to music lovers the world over; Wynton Marsalis playing with Art Blakey, Carmen McRae, Charles Mingus, Sonny Stitt, Lionel Hampton, and more.

Presented here is the first gathering of selections from the first decade of Who's Who In Jazz recordings. These are unique performances, some live, all memorable. The sampling of the best of Who's Who In Jazz soon will be considered a necessary part of any fine music collection. Enjoy! --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars If you like West Coast, this is a fine choice........2006-08-20

Shelly Manne had a distinguished career as a drummer and here he works with a kind of Who's Who in West Coast Jazz -- Bob Cooper, Jimmy Giuffre, Marty Paich, Art Pepper and Bud Shank, among others.

The sound we mostly associate with West Coast jazz comes less from the solos than from the smooth arrangements. They sound more like miniature versions of Woody Herman and Stan Kenton than like home-grown small ensembles designed around a few instruments. And they tended to use oddball instruments -- French horns and whatnot. You ought to hear Bob Cooper on another album struggling with a jazz interpretation of "I Can't Get Started" -- on an oboe!

Most of the soloists are competent and professional musicians without being particularly innovative. Gerry Mulligan (not heard here) was an exception. So was Jimmy Giuffre who went on a few years after this recording to come out with a very personal breakthrough album that included a couple of tunes by Jerome Kern in which Giuffre shook of the cliches and did some extraordinary things. And after that went on to play experimental jazz in empty night clubs because evidently no one but musical theorists could understand them.

But here everyone is pretty much at his peak. It was 1953 and 1955 after all, the heyday of West Coast Jazz and its popularity. Aficionados had Howard Rumsey and his Lighthouse All-Stars in their minds constantly.

The musicians all seemed to know one another and to have worked together at various times in different venues. This is a good example of their having fun while producing some memorable work.

5 out of 5 stars West Coast Ain't So Bad Now Is It!!!!!!!.......2003-06-24

Black be bop musicians thought that whites could not pull it off. Whites also got criticised like, they weren't true jazz people, didn't have the soul and backrounds to be jazz musicians. Blacks were right, in a way. Even though just the visual difference was the color of skin, blacks had the soulful backround. Miles Davis once said, I can tell if its not black people, It just wont go through me. Blacks said go find your own music. Well, whites came to play west coast, and still got criticised. They claimed it was bland, and wasn't real. West coasts got more money, so maybee it was envy, but blacks are said to be true jazz musicians. To me, this isn't so. Blacks told WHITES to find their own way of preaching jazz, and they did and still got badly criticised. This Shelly Manne album is proof that west coast isn't bland. It swings just as violently as any other. Critic, Nat Hentoff once said west coast was bland, but to me it isn't so. Whites should have an outlet of expression. I still love Miles and Trane though.

5 out of 5 stars Texas tenor at his very best.......2001-09-24

Buddy Tate (1913-2001) ranks among the great masters of classic tenor sax.He played in Count Basie's orchestra after Lester left the band, and belongs to the family of the great players of the swing era, with Don Byas,Arnett Cobb,Illinois Jacquet,Ben Webster and Chu Berry.THis CD combines two different sessions originally issued on Swingville : "Tate's date" (tracks 1-6) and "Groovin' with Buddy Tate" (tracks 7-13).For the first session,Buddy plays with the rare Ben Richardson (alto, baritone and clarinet),Sadik Hakim (piano),Wendell Marshall (bass) and Osie Johnson,a very talented drummer. The second session shows us Buddy on tenor sax,of course, but also on clarinet (a magnificent version of Duke's "I'm just a lucky so and so"),with pianist Ronnell Bright, guitarist Wally Richardson, bassist George Tucker and Roy Brooks on drums. The spirit of Kansas City's music is everywhere in this record: blues and jumping tunes in which Buddy's saxophone shines from the beginning to the end.In the second session, the blues alternates with three beautiful standards: Duke's "lucky" (beautiful chorus by Wally Richardson),"East of the sun" and "makin' whoopee".The recording engineer was Rudy Van Gelder, so the sound quality is irreprochable. An essential reissue, and a milestone in Buddy Tate's very long musical carreer.

5 out of 5 stars Shelly Swings with the Best of the West.......2000-12-28

No one could swing a pair of brushes like Shelly Manne. No disrespect to Buddy, Gene, Jo, Mel or the other giants of the engine room, but Shelly Manne was just so smooth. This disc, a reissue of Contemporary 3507, is a gem of west coast jazz and features arrangements by several of the people who defined the style in the 1950's (Marty Paich, Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers etc.). Originally recorded in 1955, Manne has surrounded himself with several west coast studio fraternity members including Bob Cooper, Curtis Counce, Bob Enevoldsen, Russ Freeman, Jimmy Giuffre, Bill Holman, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Marty Paich and others. 12 tracks in all and every one features nice tight clever orchestrations over swing tempos or ballad treatments. I only really disliked one track (Fugue) which was a little too experimental for me. Highly recommended, especially for lovers of California Cool.

      4 out of 5 stars A very nice compilation.......2005-09-25

After hearing volume 4 of this series I just had to get some more. This first volume contains more electro oriented stuff than volume 4 did, and that's not a bad thing. Excellent chillout factor for the whole album with the exception of "The Deep Child - Sierra" which is a total piece of garbage. The author must have paid a lot of money to get his track on such an otherwise excellent compilation. Highly recommended album if you're into that slow, downbeat electro/triphop groovy stuff!

3 out of 5 stars Mystical, exotic and meditative.......2004-03-05

Since i'm not familiar with Sundanese music, i don't know exact name of each instrument. But briefly and simply; the instruments consist of some kind of gongs and metallophones, an xylophone like instrument, a bamboo flute and some drums. The music is composed of layers of simple melody lines, created by gongs, xylophone and flute, and accompanied with simple and repetetive rhythm patterns by drums. The music contains mystical, exotic, and meditative low tempo melodies. Fine piece of music but there is nothing outstanding in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Five decades later and still swinging!.......2004-08-15

Lionel Hampton recorded this super CD (and volume two) in Paris during a 1955 European trip and both CDs are unusual in that they feature long tracks, up to twelve minutes on 'A la French' (and fourteen for 'I cover the waterfront' on the second CD) which allow the musicians to develop their improvisations.

The ten musicians with Hampton are French except for Benny Bailey and Nat Adderley from the Hampton orchestra and they all contribute some beautiful playing. One reason I like these two discs is the rhythm section (Sacha Distel is on guitar) which never intrudes but supports the rest of the group.

Hampton's playing throughout is superb and on the ten minute 'Zebu' he plays with just the rhythm section, improvising with Distel and pianist Rene Urtreger for extended choruses. The uptempo 'Voice of the North' and 'Crazy Rhythm' gives everyone a chance to shine, even French horn (was this a jazz first?) player Dave Amram.

I originally bought these tracks on two French Felsted LPs in the late fifties and played them into the ground so I'm particularly pleased that they are now on CD. This is swinging jazz, so good that you don't want it to end!
