2 out of 5 stars Practically the same old thing.......2006-12-10

The charm of a Rodgers and Hart song is the words. Rodgers was good, but without Hart, he would not be nearly as well remembered or loved. His stint with Hammerstein depended on the maudlin stupidity of Hammerstein's words attracting the vacuity of the american public. They suck. Though they do achieve a kind of amateurish poetry that other lyricists don't even try for. Hammerstein, which I've never heard anyone say before, could be quite witty. That said, this CD. I stupidly asked about the timings (I bought this through the Amazon Marketplace and consequently didn't lose much money) after I'd ordered the CD. Most of the verses and choruses of "Manhattan" and "Mt. Greenery" are, as usual, left out. "As usual." That's the phrase. This is an "as usual" collection of R&H standards. It has as far as I'm concerned only 3 things to recommend it. "Bewitched, Bothered..." is sung with the original earthy lyric which after about 65 years of the Doris Day version was a joy. I think that track, by the way, is from the English cast revival, but I'm not sure. "Small Hotel" is sung complete, all the words, including the verse and the patter. And sigh "You Took Advantage of Me" is given a wonderful rendition, I thought. The rest is pleasant, achingly familiar background music. Maybe in another 100 years or so, all (or most or lots) R&H's rarities with complete lyrics will have made it to CDs (or their equivalent), and even hopefully some more studio cast recordings of their shows. Complete. I was very disappointed in this CD, and very glad I only spent $10.50 total for it.

5 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE! JOAN MORRIS AT HER PEAK!.......2000-04-30

I have been a Joan Morris fan for over 20 years and own many of her superb albums. More than any others, "Let's Do It: Live in Aspen" is a dazzling tour de force for Ms. Morris and her accompanist/husband, William Bolcom.

No singer can match Joan Morris's vocal and interpretive skills. Her phrasing and timing are impeccable! She can take a song you've heard a million times (by others) and make it breathtakingly unforgettable. Examples on this disc include "Always," "Bill," "Let's Do It" and - my favorite - "On the Banks of the Wabash." And William Bolcom's lilting piano composition, "Graceful Ghost," written in his father's memory, will knock your socks off!

In short, treat yourself to this CD!

Just found this by accident while browsing ebay, and it's incredible. I didn't realize how rare it was, it's a shame more people won't hear this amazing fusion.

    5 out of 5 stars Freakin' excellent!.......1999-01-02

Great band! Too bad their label didn't have the good sense to keep them on the roster. Even though I don't really dig saxophones much, they manage to make it fit, and it's not overbearing... this is a near-perfect fusion of jazz and hardcore and just about everything else - an eclectic blend of styles, pretty and ugly and noisy and intricate and... EVERYthing! Snag this puppy before the label runs out of stock. Especially reccomended to people who like bands like Drive Like Jehu or Victims Family, and anybody who was fortunate enough to hear the late-lamented band Skeleton Crew, which was the band the drummer and bassist for Go Dog Go came from...

4 out of 5 stars Some of the man's best playing, poorly mastered.......2003-07-19

Glad to Be Unhappy is possibly the best Paul Desmond release of all time - the way he melds with Jim Halls moody playing is almost empathic. Two of a Mind is another excellent effort from the Mulligan/Desmond team which worked so well with Brubeck, and in previous solo eleases.

Both of these albums are superb masterworks from one of the most overlooked saxaphone players in the history of the idiom; unfortunately both are also poorly mastered, and packaged with little aesthetic sense to speak of, which is a real shame given the stunning cover art from Glad To Be Unhappy.

1 out of 5 stars Another "Collectables" CD worth skipping.......2001-09-11

It amazes me how poorly Collectables Records manages to reissue classic albums such as these. As glad as I'd like to be that Paul Desmond's records are being made more widely available, I'm apalled by the complete lack of taste which the designers of Collectables' cover art continually display. Is looking as cheap and classless as possible their intent, or is that result merely an unhappy accident? (One that occurs with every CD they release?)

It's also worth noting that the pair of Desmond 2-on-1 CD's released by Collectables is in a jumbled, non-chronological order. The correct order of Desmond's RCA output is: "Desmond Blue," "Two Of A Mind," "Take Ten," "Bossa Antigua," "Glad To Be Unhappy," "Easy Living." As you can see, Collectables has managed to completely botch the sequence of the albums, evidently failing to realize how important this is to serious collectors. How can we be expected to follow the artist's growth from record to record when they are paired so illogically and randomly?

As of this writing, the French reissues of all six Desmond RCA's (named above) are available from Amazon.com, each in the $12-13 range. Yes, purchasing each one individually will be more expensive than buying the Collectables twofers, but the vast improvements in sound (remastered), content (bonus material), and aesthetics (complete original artwork) makes them quite worth the price. Skip this "Collectable" joke and go for the real deal.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Musician's Finest playing.......2000-10-12

This album is an outstanding deal because it combines 2 great Paul Desmond albums into 1. TWO OF A MIND is Paul playing duets and trading solos with the great Bari Sax player Gerry Mulligan, and is alone worth the price of the album. But the best part, for me, is GLAD TO BE UNHAPPY. It's Paul Desmond at his absolute best, playing bluesy, melancholy old standards. The sad, bluesy tunes reflect Desmond's love of the bittersweet side of love and romance, and he plays with his characteristically beautiful touch, but with lots of deep emotion, and bluesy licks. This one will really get to you.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Desmond: The tone that melts a thousand hearts.......2000-01-21

Wrongfully overshadowed by Dave Brubeck's name, Paul Desmond sadly never achieved the notoriety he deserved. Although very well known among Jazz enthusiasts, Desmond's playing merits far greater exposure. Like the other great horn men, you could pick Desmond out of a thousand-horn line up, after hearing just a couple notes. Greats like Getz, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins had a sound all their own. Desmond did as well, and every bit as much as these, but his name is rarely included in the books. This album shows the sad lilt, the melancholy loneliness, and the 'hopeful-but-know-better' melody lines of Paul, and better than any other recording of him that I know. "Glad to be unhappy" is without a doubt, my favorite song on the planet. Paul's trying to be happy, but never with any success. You can actually HEAR this crushingly beautiful occurance on the title track. When I hear Des, no matter where I am or how I'm feeling, it's raining outside, it's the hazy past all over again, Des standing next to a window pain with beads of rain running down it, and he blows notes calling out for the kind of help that is not possible. I couldn't recommend a more beautiful album.
