4 out of 5 stars Blast from the past.......2007-07-08

While on a cruise The Happenings were our entertainment. I realized how good music was from my era...and stocked up on their music.

5 out of 5 stars If you like the Happenings..........2007-02-22

Hard to find music from the 60's, this group of a one-hit wonder was what I've searched for a while.

3 out of 5 stars Good except for some tracks.......2006-03-23

I love the songs, I had an 8-track a million years ago. The only thing wrong with the CD is that on some tracks you can't hear the vocals, or some of the instruments can't be heard. It seems the sounds aren't equal. I don't know anything about the conversion to CD, but it lost quite a bit in the translation. I have seen this alot though in some of the older music. Still love the songs, though.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD - one song a remake, but most sound original.......2005-08-13

The one song I know is a remake is "Goodnight My Love." I know this because I have it on the original 45 issue and the CD version is an inferior remake. But the others with which I'm familiar - but don't have original vinyl to compare, only memories - seem authentic.

The audio quality is great and certainly superior to some of the CDs you find these days which are only re-recordings of old vinyl or cassettes.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-06-24

This CD helps me to complete my library of great music of a wonderful era in American history. A must CD for a collector and a great group of musicians

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars.......2007-04-13

if you're looking to add some vibes to your jazz collection, this is a fine fine album, and would make a good choice. mr hutcherson is a fantastic vibes player, and is joined here by herbie hancock on piano, bob cranshaw on bass, and joe chambers on drums. the entire album is special, but the tune that i really want to give a shout out about is "bouquet," a stunningly gorgeous slow-tempo piece that has soul-stirring interplay between the bass and vibes. one of my favorite slow jazz numbers of all-time. if you are considering picking up a copy of this album, i say "do it!"

5 out of 5 stars Classic from the 60s.......2006-10-31

This was a real eye-opener for me when I first bought it as an LP back in the mid-60s. I was used to the styles of such modern hard boppers as Art Blakey and Horace Silver, and this was basically nothing like that. The most "radical" piece is THE OMEN, which is totally free and contains some of the most spirited and adventurous jazz of the 60s. Hutcherson's marimba solo is absolutely compelling, and Joe Chambers's multi-percussion voices are fascinating, culminating in an explosive ending. Herbie Hancock's MAIDEN VOYAGE gets an excellent reading: there are lots of spaces in the theme that allow a great deal of tension to build. HEAD START is the most traditional tune, taken way up tempo, and is reminiscent of SPEAK LOW. ROJO is a Latin piece with an excellent Hancock solo and a powerful Bob Cranshaw bass solo. This has to rank as one of Blue Notes most ambitious albums of the mid-60s, and one of Hutcherson's best. Nice!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece from An American National Treasure.......2006-10-10

There is not a dull note or wasted beat on this masterpiece from 1966. This is a direct replication of the original album. It swings from the first track AQUARIAN MOON and never lets up climaxing in one of my all-time favourite tracks THE OMEN, which is a nod towards free music. Six out of seven tracks are by the leader, and major jazz master Mr Hutcherson, and one by the renowned Mr Hancock - MAIDEN VOYAGE which rivals its twin on the album of the same name, one of the most famous single tracks in all modern jazz. Along with this track, there is a waltz BOUQUET with an amazing solo by Mr Hutcherson, a Spanish flavoured number, ROJO, a ballad WHEN YOU ARE NEAR, which provide a beautifully balanced programme of music. After many, many listenings over 30 years I am still touched by the feeling and inventiveness of this beautiful music. Compare it to THROB to see how lightweight THROB is (Mr Jarrett and Mr Burton). I believe BOUQUET and THE OMEN can sit quite comfortably alongside other masterpieces in the music, such as John Lewis' DJANGO, or Mr Hubbard's RED CLAY. It's one of my "can't live without this music" discs. It's also got one of the sexiest and best designed covers ever by Reid Miles.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Ages.......2006-09-13

Even by the supremely high standards of Blue Note Records in the mid-1960s, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson's HAPPENINGS was a rare event. This superb quartet session (with Herbie Hancock on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Joe Chambers on drums) remains not only the pinnacle of Hutcherson's outstanding career but one of the absolute best of sixties jazz dates - no mean accomplishment on either hand.
With six originals by Hutcherson and the finest "cover" of Hancock's classic "Maiden Voyage" ever attempted, HAPPENINGS is a thoroughly modern set, but also a more mainstream one than many of Hutcherson's other recordings from the era. The brisk, edgy "Aquarian Moon" modulates flawlessly into the aching beauty of "Bouquet," both tracks making the most of the de facto chops duel between Hutcherson and Hancock which is the most crucial component of this date's success. The lack of horns allows a level of interplay between these two men - indeed, between all four men - which would be inconceivable with a larger front line. Few other jazz albums epitomize the ideal of a group of musicians thinking and playing as one quite as well as HAPPENINGS, and I mean that most seriously. From the rousing flash of "Rojo" through "Maiden Voyage"'s awe-inspiring maintenance of restrained power, the reflective yet dignified sentiment of "When You Are Near" to the inspired silliness of "Omen" (the sole avant-garde number here), everything works, connects, complements and convinces. This is a statement of musical purpose as fully realized as any you're likely to hear, and a singularly bright feather in the cap of everyone involved.
Sadly, HAPPENINGS is also one of far too many classic albums which Blue Note has been unforgivably late in reissuing Stateside. The 24-bit Rudy Van Gelder remaster of this date has existed since at least 1998, when it was released in Japan, but is only now seeing the light of day in the home of jazz (and Bobby Hutcherson). I can't imagine why this is so; but at least HAPPENINGS is happening once again, and that's something all fans of good music should be truly glad to hear.

5 out of 5 stars This is Happenin' Baby!.......2006-09-13

Love this record. Great to see it finally re-issued. And hey I for one love the Reid Miles cover art. Like the music it's seductive with just the right touch of cheese. Question: wasn't "Blow Up" on this record once? I don't seem to see it here......

A great one. Right up there with Oblique and Dialogue. Not avant like those, but just a record with easy pleasures that you can listen to any time you like, and have fun listening, which is no small feat.

    5 out of 5 stars they're still happening!.......2004-03-26

It doesn't happen often, matter of fact I can count on one hand the number of times a remake outshines the original, and this is one of those times. "See you in September" is a great fun summer song that is way better than the original by the Tempos, matter of fact its worth buying this album for this song alone... but it gets better. The first album which the single was taken from is simply a fun album, they dont take life too seriously and it shows in songs like Tea Time and the liner notes of the albums. Still there is some great love songs too notably Girl on a Swing (recorded by Gerry and the Pacemakers also)which was written by Bob Miranda one of the Happenings. They also do a great job on Go Away Little Girl. Psycle is not as great but still it has its moments. In my opinion they were getting a little too heavy into the "standards" This could album could have easily been titled "The Happenings sing the Judy Garland Songbook". But still the harmony is solid. Buy this album.

Bobby Hutcherson is one of my alltime favorites, though he's generally relegated to second chair vibist when compared to the likes of 'Hamp and 'Bags.---Never the less, HAPPENINGS stands as one of the master pieces of the Blue Note offerings from the 1960's.
Hutcherson shines both as musician and composer on this disc (he wrote all the tunes with the exception of Maiden Voyage, penned by Herbie Hancock). The range of moods evoked by the compositions is subtley astounding. The uptempo tunes (Aquarian Moon,Rojo and Head Start)swing gracefully and showcase the empathy between the musicians. Hancock's the perfect foil for 'Hutch with Cranshaw and Chambers rounding out a very tasteful rhythm section.
The two ballads(Boquet and When You Are Near) highlight the outing for me.They're both beautifully somber and seemingly very personal in their nature, both for the musicians and the listener.
The disc ends with The Omen, which is an interesting dash into avant gard waters.
All in all, an extremely gratifying album.

        4 out of 5 stars Surprising collection.......2002-01-02

This is an import version of a set that was originally available from Sound Exchange, a Time Warner direct marketing music operation that has since folded. Though, since its original issue, some of these tracks have become available on CD elsewhere, there are several here that made their CD debut with this set and are still hard-to-find. Four Jacks and a Jill's "Master Jack", the Association's song from the movie, "Goodbye Columbus", Leapy Lee's "Little Arrows" and "Don't Just Stand There" by Patty Duke are among the rarities found here. Sound quality is quite good overall with all tracks except disc 1, tracks 4,14,16,17,19 and 20 and disc 2 tracks 7 and 20 appearing in their stereo version. While it may seem a bit pricey, with 40 tracks on two discs, it represents a reasonably good value. This is a surprisingly interesting collection of mostly substantially charting, yet seldom-found 45's from the later 60s. Since track listings are not supplied at the time of this review, they are as follows:
DISC ONE: Lazy Day - Spanky and Our Gang; The 59th Street Bridge Song - Harpers Bizarre; Master Jack - Four Jacks and a Jill; Western Union - Five Americans; Morning Girl - Neon Philharmonic; Brand New Me - Dusty Springfield; Turn Down Day - Cyrkle; Shame, Shame - Magic Lanterns; Baby, I'm Yours - Barbara Lewis; I Got Rhythm - Happenings; Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield; Bowling Green - Everly Bros.; Don't Just Stand There - Patty Duke; Sweet Inspiration - Sweet Inspirations; Goodbye Columbus - Association; Pied Piper - Crispian St. Peters; Best Of Both Worlds - Lulu; Will You Be Staying After Sunday - Peppermint Rainbow; Next Plane To London - Rose Garden; Bottle Of Wine - Fireballs. DISC TWO: Games People Play - Joe South; Baby The Rain Must Fall - Glenn Yarbrough; I'm A Fool - Dino, Desi and Billy; Apricot Brandy - Rhinoceros; Crying Game - Brenda Lee; And Suddenly - Cherry People; Malibu U - Harpers Bizarre; Alice's Rock and Roll Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie; D.W. Washburn - Monkees; Classical Gas - Mason Williams; Indian Lake - Cowsills; Action - Freddy Cannon; Mr. Bojangles - Jerry Jeff Walker; Nashville Cats - Lovin' Spoonful; Come On Down To My Boat - Every Mother's Son; I Love You - People; Little Arrows - Leapy Lee; Mr. Dieingly Sad - Critters; Long Lonesome Highway - Michael Parks; Let It Out - Hombres.
