His Final Work

His Final Work

Editorial Reviews

From the Label
Paul Jeffrey's writing for the ensemble generally produces the broad, thick textures which we sometimes associate with the late Todd Dameron. There is for example, a rich and satisfying sound to the band on the opening JUST FOR LAUGHS which exists here more as two separate takes rather than two parts of the same performance. Perhaps the most memorable titles are those on which the tempo stays in the ballad vein and Mingus was moved by the personalities of the persons to whom he dedicated the works. CAROLINE KEKKI MINGUS was for his daughter; the last, as it happened, of a series of musical portraits devoted to ladies related to the composer. FAREWELL FARWELL, also sometimes referred to as FARWELL FAREWELL received this title after Mingus's lifelong friend FARWELL Taylor passed away. And DUKE ELLINGTON'S SOUND OF LOVE needs little or no explanation for Duke always figured large in Mingus's gallery of heroes. Either by design or accident this work interpolates a phrase from LUSH LIFE, a song not written by Ellington but by his colleague Billy Strayhorn. It seems safe to assume that Mingus was aware of the authorship and introduced the fragment deliberately, in order to draw attention to the inseparable nature of the Ellington-Strayhorn partnership for so many years. Of the remaining works FABLES OF FAUBUS is Mingus's last recording of the music he wrote in order to commemorate the actions of Orval E. Faubus, State Governor, who did his best to prevent the integration of the school system in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. This was often performed (and recorded) with a spoken lyric in the course of which Faubus hardly emerged with a great deal of credit. And the staple PEGGY'S BLUE SKYLIGHT and his only recording? of his composition IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING. SLOP has an interesting history for it was composed by Mingus as part of the score for a CBS television ballet presentation. Those familiar with Mingus's music will recognize the obvious references to the earliest work BETTER GIT IT IN YOUR SOUL, a deliberate attempt to satisfy the choreographer's wishes. SO LONG ERIC is a blues dedicated to the late Eric Dolphy. But it was not written as a musical obituary; composed while Dolphy was alive it refers to Eric's desire to leave the Mingus unit and spend some time in Europe. (Ironically Dolphy was to die in Berlin, a fact which hit Mingus hard.) --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to both the life and the work.......2001-08-10

Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment (NA 421912) afforded me.

Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.

His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).

My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

    Album Description

The Coming of Christ is the first of a series of three CDs using the exquisite music of Gregorian chant to describe and illuminate the life of Christ. Sung by the Gloriæ Dei Cantores Schola and conducted by Dr. Mary Berry, CBE, these reknowned experts bring a wealth of experience to the interpretation of the chant. Well-known pieces alternate with numerous antiphons to bring us closer to the time of Christ's birth and early childhood. The prophetic announcements, the longing and anticipation of Christ's birth as well as the joy of the angels' message are all vividly portrayed in the chant. Chant-based organ works by French composers Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor frame this program celebrating the life of Christ. These are the first recordings to be made in the superb acoustics of the Church of the Transfiguration, a basilican church made of limestone, in a modern-day abbey.

          Album Description

"His Final Work" is the last recording Charlie Mingus ever made. It was recorded in New York City in November of 1977 and features Woody Shaw and Jade Walrath on trumpets, Ricky Ford and Paul Jeffrey on tenor sax, Gerry Mulligan on baritone, Bob Neloms on piano, Lionel Hampton on vibes, Charlie Mingus on bass, Dannie Richmond on drums and Peter Matt on french horn.

          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Pretty boring for being Mingus.......2001-03-03

For being a Mingus album I'd say it's pretty boring. It's not a bad album, but it lacks the edge, the attitude, the wildness of records like "Ah Um", "Blues & Roots" and "Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus". You can clearly hear that this is Mingus' compositions and arrangements, there are some decent solos too, but it just doesn't have the... the... soul, go and joyful wild attitude that, to me, is what Charles Mingus is about. It feels a bit like "Mingus goes easy listening" or something... Way to clean and sort of laid back for my liking!

I'm not a jazz expert in any way, but Mingus is the one who brought me in to it, and this is not the Mingus I learned to know. That doesn't have to mean that this is a poor album, but I just can't recommend it, at least not if you're after something representative. For those of you who already owns the majority of his albums; Well, you might give it a try...

The sonata for harp evokes a sense of serenity and tranquillity. The rhondo is especially delicate and refined. The processional is joyful and celebratory! Mr Marshall McGuire has presented a pure rendition of listening pleasure!
