Ed Bennett has long been considered one of the West Coast's premiere string bass players. Currently living in Portland, Oregon since 1990, Ed's work may take him virtually anywhere in the world. He has worked with, toured internationally, or recorded with many legendary jazz figures, including: Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, Frank Morgan, Richie Cole, Pete Christlieb, Bud Shank, Pete Jolly, Joe Albany, James Williams, Mike Wofford, Bill Mays, Anita O'Day, Ernistine Anderson, The Modernaires, and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra. Ed was born in Los Angeles California on December 19, 1951 and began playing the string bass at the age of 12. He was a talented student of bassist Nat Gangursky, with whom he concentrated on technique and the classical repertoire. At 13, he was introduced to jazz music, and played in a Dixieland band that appeared on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour in 1966. A dedicated, working professional, Ed also majored in music, winning acceptance to the Berklee School of Music in Boston in 1971. Ed made what he considers to be his first professional jazz engagement at the Jazz Workshop with Brazilian greats Victor Brasil and Claudio Rotiti, while a Berklee student. In 1974, Ed toured with Jimmy Witherspoon. From 1976 to 1979 he backed Carmen McRae, making his recording debut on "Carmen McRae at the Great American Music Hall" in San Francisco. In 1981, he worked with the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band, recording the Grammy-nominated "Tanuki's Night Out." While still living in Los Angeles, Ed Bennett recorded his first album as leader on Vision Records in 1987. A trio date with Kent Glenn on piano and Jack Ranelli on drums. In 1993 Ed started Saphu Records, his own independent record label. He currently has three releases under his own name and one as a sideman with Jazz violist Keith Barry. In a professional career spanning over thirty years, Ed has performed at major jazz clubs and events nationally and worldwide: Newport Jazz Festival, Mt Hood Jazz Festival, Jazz at Wolftrap, Britt Festival, Laguna Beach Jazz Festival, Blues Alley (Wash. D.C.), Jazz Alley (Seattle), Concerts by The Sea, The Light House (L.A.). In the Portland area, Ed has worked with virtually everyone: Nancy King, Shirley Nanette, Steve Christofferson, Gordon Lee, George Mitchell, Randy Porter, Darrell Grant, Geoff Lee, Phil Goldberg, Tony Pacini, Dave Frishberg, Dan Balmer, Dan Faehnle, John Stowell, Warren Rand, Paul Mazzio, Ron Steen, Alan Jones, Mel Brown.

At three CDs, Rhino's 25th Anniversary Collection may have featured just a little too much. But at one CD, Rhino's distillation of that box set--also titled Anthology--may have been just a tad too short, neglecting cuts ("The Proud One," "Peanuts") that true aficionados wanted on CD. The label remedies the situation with its 2001 Anthology, which, at two CDs, is really only three songs shorter than the 25th Anniversary Collection. Thus, the casual fan may still get a bit more than necessary (including a very vanilla take on Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame"). The tradeoff is you'll also get everything you could possibly want by this wonderful group, including the great obscurities (although the label also released a new rarities package, Off Seasons, to coincide with this compilation). It prominently features those amazing '60s radio hits that merged Spector-ish production with East Coast street-corner doo-wop to produce epic miniature rock operas. Much of the imagery in those very class-conscious love stories would turn up in the songs of another great Italian rock star from New Jersey named Springsteen. And to this day, the music and production still sound passionate and glorious. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

Great Set List, Great Sound, Great Packaging! What Else Is There?.......2007-06-06
Great Sound. Volume and mixing is perfect. I even put this on a Wave Editor and the volume is near 0db with terrific dynamic range.
Great Packaging, with a nice booklet with photos, a detailed set list with dates and original stock numbers, and nice information about the group.
I wasn't a huge fan of the Four Seasons, but if you want to buy a really good sounding CD set of their stuff with a great set list and packaging, this one is for you.
Great Memories.......2007-03-14
This collection made me a fan!.......2007-03-02
Anyway, that's what I thought until out of a desperate attempt to wean my young children off the Beach Boys that they seem to need to listen to every evening and have been for the last two years or so, I went ahead and ordered this anthology.
Well, a whole new world of pop music opened up to me. Guess what, when you play a beatifully remastered CD on a high-end stereo system (one of those systems where the transformers are in separate boxes), they actually sound rather good! I was totally amazed at this band that I had pre-judged as being a bunch of 50's throwbacks that are only good for a screech or two during a CD commercial on late-night TV.
And, the stuff between the hits sounds good too. Sure, not all the tunes on this collection have the hooks of the great hits, but to me it's more interesting to hear a full range of what a band is/was capable of, not just the absolutely greatest hits.
One of my kids liked it too. So, if you're already a fan of this band I don't see how you could go wrong, unless you own all these tunes already, but if you're not a fan this CD set just might make you one.
And once you've digested this anthology, go get the "Let's Hang On and 11 Other Hits". It's got a different version of "Workin' my Way Back to You" and the brilliant "Beggars Parade" and a lot of other great tunes that didn't make it to their greatest hits albums.
Great Collection.......2007-02-17
It has very hard to find singles that were released in the 60s and 70s. One of my favorite selections is FALLEN ANGEL, that is featured in the Broadway play JERSEY BOYS. Buy this!!

The funniest Schickele piece ever!.......2006-05-23
It should be noted that the Amazon listing is incorrect. The 1712 Overture is in reality conducted by "Walter Bruno" who is actually David Zinman. It is most assuredly not conducted by Bruno Walter (can you imagine that?), who died in 1962.
Highly recommended.
P D Q on form again.......2005-07-20
Classical music, like any living corpus of cultural tradition (eg religion, sport & politics) should be well capable of laughing at itself. Others have done so successfully (Hoffnung, Spike Jones, the Comedy Harmonists et al.) and PDQ follows in a worthy & rollicking tradition!
beware of the organ cadenza!.......2005-05-18
Einstein on the Fritz is a tonic to anyone sick of the pretentious meanderings of Philip Glass, Taverner et al. And Cappricio La Poucelle de New Orleans (engineered by Burt Bach, a living direct decendant of JS Bach) is frighteningly intense, as well as hysterical. These musicians are also terrific - the pieces wouldn't work at all otherwise. And who couldn't love the rapturous intro to The Preachers of Crimetheous - featuring the most incredible percussion playing since Ginger Baker's 'Toad'.
All in all, this is a completely ridiculous delight!
Another assault to your funny bone!.......2004-04-12

This incredibly irreverent album is a must for music lovers everywhere!

Trite Not Treat.......2006-02-23
I am the first to admit the artistry, perhaps musicality of Cage even when he takes himself AND his music too seriously. At least we did not have to "listen" to 4'33". One reviewer was correct - this is perhaps the most accessible offering of the entire ouevre. It is...interesting in a childish sort of way, sort of like someone who learns that hitting notes on a keyboard results in sounds or better, is playing just to hear the sounds that can be produced. DREAM perfectly expresses the mood of this CD (which is wonderful as party backgroup music) with its enigmatic, almost shy explorations. The tracks are united by an almost wordless fear of being closely examined. A few contain a nice rhythmic drive, others remind one of that godawful New Age stuff heard on public radio occasionally. The CD is compelling only if one takes their music with a huge dollop of tenuousness.
"Before the sh*t, there was a mighty fine meal" - W.A. Mozart.......2006-02-01
The bigger sin would be to have been born before Bach and bitch about the dearth of music celebrating things other than mankind's moribundity. We listeners - and listeners of greater rotundity, too - must wade backward through some rather insensible attempts to make music of the kind that might be called classical. Very generally our near contemporaries have either soaked us all heavy with a riptide of sentimentality or made of mockery of sound so effectively that we have all soaked them with our unceasing flows of laughter.
Before Picasso was making a bloody mess of things he was making something approximating art; and in between those conical eyes and angular breasts I can nearly find the remnants of that once sane man. John Cage had me in stitches for a time when I had the patience and credulity to stop long enough to listen. He reminded me that the piano was a percussive instrument - one to be hardly banged upon in the chorus of creation and muse.
Between then and the very moment I received `In a Landscape' John Cage was merely a mark of reference denoting that point at which I stopped taking his work and my life too seriously. But `In a Landscape' - or as I spooneristically name it, "In a Cage" - is something unlike the curious Cage and something more than the mere "bleats beyond the reckoning table."
Though I have no faith in my own estimation of what is good or deserving of praise, I do know what I hate; AND THIS I DO NOT HATE. `Landscape' is - I think - a collection of sparse and haunting melodies that seems to fit well with me when reading Joseph Campbell's "Hero" or Richard Feynman's "6 Easy Pieces." `In a Landscape' is to my ear almost great. I think this is so because I tend to lean in when I listen, and this "leaning in" is a gesture I've never offered John Cage or his music when stuck between him and his variations.
Cage for people who don't like modern music.......2004-01-25
In A Landscape is a 1948 work in which simple Satiesque melodies are played on a piano with the sustaining pedal held down, creating a soft haze of harmonies. This could easily be simple kitsch, but Cage's careful musical judgement allows the music to be sonically beautiful without degenerating into New Age mush. Music for Marcel Duchamp, a 1947 film soundtrack for prepared piano, takes a single melodic line and spins it out intriguingly, insistent rhythms mollified by soft modal harmonies and long silences. Souvenir, a 1983 organ composition, continues the Satiesque aesthetic with its gentle progress, repetitions and modal harmonies. It is certainly sonically beautiful, though I find it goes on a little too long for my taste.
A Valentine Out Of Season is a set of three brief pieces for prepared piano, written in 1944 (the title refers to the break-up of Cage's marriage). The first piece is slow and chromatic, the second a vigorously rhythmic dance and the last combines the characteristics of the two preceding pieces. Rather slighter is the 1948 Suite for Toy Piano, which makes about as much music as can be made from an instrument with only nine notes. A major contrast to this is the 1940 Bacchanale, Cage's first work for prepared piano, a vigorous, repetitive dance that keeps suddenly losing its rhythmic vigour, then recovering it.
The disc ends with two slow pieces. The brief, white-note Prelude for Meditation was written for prepared piano in 1944 and is Satiesque in its rhythmic and harmonic restraint. Dream, a 1948 piano piece, returns to the atmosphere of In A Landscape, though I don't think it's quite as striking as that piece.
With the exception of In A Landscape, I would regard the works on this disc as minor rather than major Cage. Nonetheless, Drury's sympathetic performance approach brings out the best in these attractive pieces, and this disc would make a very good first taste of Cage for listeners of a more conservative bent.
In A Landscape = unmatched beauty.......2003-05-29
Great for old and new listeners.......2002-08-04
Anyone just starting out with John Cage, start here. If this strikes you well, check out "Music For Changes" and then the Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano. Beyond that I highly encourage anyone to do some research, read some of Cage's writings, especially a collection of essays and lectures titled "Silence." As his life progresses, his music becomes more minimal and disjointed, and his words really strike down exactly what it is he's trying to accomplish with his music, and that really helps the listener.
For listeners that are already very familiar with Cage's work, this still isn't a waste. These recordings are a great collection of some nice Cage pieces that don't get as much attention, and is still a really pleasing album to listen to.

Creator/producer Joel Surnow's hit action-suspense series largely turns on an innovative fusion of real-time plot line delivered by aggressive camera work and multi-frame editing technique. But no small part of the show's intensely propulsive drive -- and much of its dramatic tension and atmospheric textures -- are consistently delivered by the music of young composer Sean Callery, who's won three straight Emmy nominations (winning once) for his contributions to the series. The composer personally selected and annotated the tracks for this anthology of his best work from the show's first three seasons, anchored by a complete version of the show's usually truncated theme. Though it shares similarities with Michael Giacchino's work on Alias, Callery's work here is consistently darker, an electro-organic fusion that spans tense, brooding orchestral passages and thrashing dollops of metallic-edged techno. Yet the composer also delivers moments of melodic, almost mournful solitude, while the third season's story line inspires some evocative Latin influences as well. Callery's background in sound effects editing contributes much to the rich sonic textures here, yielding a pioneering approach that portends a bright future for the composer. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".
One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)
If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

Chicago's piano-infused pop rockers have been stirring a storm in the Midwest the past year with infectious hooks and harmonies that you just can't get out of your head. My only dissapointment with this album are the slower songs, Tracks 5 & 6. They seem a little out of their element and the songs come across as a little forced. Overall, this is a good album, though it is certainly a pop album, should attract fans of other genres.

Leave it to a coupe of quirky Arkansas buskers preoccupied with all things snowy to deliver a uniquely hatched collection of original Christmas songs. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood have made a name with a family brand of entertainment that combines humor, harmony and imagination. There's plenty of each on Merry Fishes to All, but this is truly a record wrapped with the kids in mind. Surveying the seasonal landscape, the flaky duo sizes up the disappointments of getting clothes for Christmas, having a birthday on December 25, and getting a Cheese Log! In between there's a whacky reworking of a classic called "The Eleven Cats of Christmas" and some simply lovely songs even a hardened old Scrooge could love, including "Snow Is Falling" and "You Got to Get Up," the enchanted desperate plea of every kid who ever burst from bed Christmas morning before sunrise. There's only a couple limp lines drifting off here, but overall the fish are jumpin' and Santa approves. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

"The Eleven Cats Of Christmas" soon became a favorite of my grandson's and there are too many to list that are my favorites--"I Got A Cheese Log"; "Clothes for Christmas"; etc. Such good vocals, not heard since the 60's groups.
Well, Merry Christmas to me! .......2005-12-21
This isn't just a happy album, though. Trout Fishing shows you the good and bad side of Christmas. How many of you lament the year you got a cheese log, clothes---or the fact that your birthday is too darn close to Christmas?
And the "Christmas Letter" at the end is just too good. If you're feeling down this year, this CD will definitely get you smiling.
I got a cheese log!.......2004-12-25
Another Grammy nomination!.......2004-12-18
With the release of this holiday CD, our annual dilemna of "do we listen to Trout or holiday music?" has been solved. We now have the best of both worlds! The songs are for the most part their original works...you haven't heard them a gazillion times before, but they will become instant classics in your family. Every song is someone's "favorite" in our house, so there are no skipped tracks.
"Snow is Falling" is my personal favorite. I can't put it in words any better than another person who wrote that a real love and respect for children shines through. As I often do when I'm listening to Trout music, I find myself inspired to strive to be the kind of parent my children deserve.
"Snow Day", "Bob & Bob", a great song about 2 "flaky little snowflakes with ordinary names", "You Gotta Get Up" and "The Christmas Letter" are also on my list of favorites. This last one is a touching and pretty song, written much like the familiar Christmas letter sent by many families to keep in touch with loved ones.
"My First Christmas" is a very fun song that cleverly uses titles of popular Christmas carols to tell the story of a baby's first Christmas. "Just Because, Mrs Claus" is a plea for Mrs. Claus to help Mr. Claus lose a few lbs, because "when he was walking rooftops last year, ceilings started cracking." The words are hysterical! After listening to "I Got a Cheese Log" I guarantee you will find yourself humming this catchy little tune at your next holiday party when you come across the obligatory cheese log. "The Eleven Cats of Christmas", or as they call it at our house, "Meow-y Christmas", is The 12 Days of Christmas meets We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Fans of the album My World will be happy to hear a reference to Chicken Joe in this song.
To summarize...great words and music as always. Thanks Keith and Ezra and congrats on the Grammy nomination. I highly recommend this CD. There you go. There you have it.
