Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Have you ever wished to be present as a great instrumentalist teaches gifted pupils? Sony's set of Alfred Cortot's Master Classes can satisfy that fantasy, as well as provide insightful performances of works (and excerpts of works) including some Cortot never recorded, and hearing him expound on them from a performer's point of view. It's possible thanks to an engineering student who taped many of Cortot's classes in the late 1950s and Murray Perahia, who tracked down the tapes and produced this invaluable set. Don't understand French? Not to worry--French texts and English translations of Cortot's remarks are provided. We also hear Cortot playing with spontaneity and captivating spur-of-the-moment impetuousness, if also with rather more wrong notes than the fastidious would like. The inevitable frustration of wanting him to play an entire lengthy work soon gives way to appreciation for his insights and the beauties of the excerpts he's highlighting. Those insights include technical points like pedaling, rhythm, and touch. But more often he's teaching a work's expressive content. He'll relate a Beethoven Sonata to a love story or the way Chopin's Ballades reflect the Adam Mieckicwicz poems said to inspire them. There's Bach, Mozart, and Schumann here too. Cortot's main point, the lesson that pervades these discs, is one all aspiring artists need to absorb: "Technique can never really be separated from musical expression." This set is must for pianophiles, students, and admirers of one of the last century's greatest artists. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:
Five Stars with a Caveat.......2006-12-02
But what fragments! The format actually highlights how vividly Cortot could make a musical point: Some of these ideas leap off the CD, and will send you heading to the piano to figure out how he did what he did. For instance, his interpretation of Mozart's C-minor Fantasia, though stylistically anachronistic, makes almost all other performances of this piece seem emotionally stultified. This is the Mozart of "Don Giovanni" translated to the piano.
Most of the repertoire wasn't recorded elsewhere by Cortot -- an additional appeal for pianophiles.
A must for any music connoisseur.......2006-01-31

Complete Master Takes 1954-1955
ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000E1YX9Y Release Date: 2006-01-03 |
Album Description
These trio recordings, made in 1954 and 1955, are the only ones pianist John Williams made as a leader in his entire career. Influenced by Horace Silver, Bud Powell and Hank Jones, Williams is most remembered for his very fine recordings with the Stan Getz Quintet. However, and despite his talent, today he remains a pianist relatively unknown for many people; but those who had the chance to have him as accompanist and all those who enjoyed his stabbing and leanly imaginative playing as a soloist, surely have not forgotten him. On organist Tony Monaco's second album, he's accompanied by his regular group--Derek DiCenzo on guitar and Louis Tsamous on drums. Like its predecessor, Burnin' Grooves, this set places Monaco squarely in the company of such forebears as Jimmy Smith, Lonnie Smith, and Jimmy McGriff. That Monaco has also overcome daunting health obstacles (he survived neuralgic amyotrophy) is a testament both to his personal drive and the magical lure of music. Half the album is Monaco originals, with the rest being a fairly robust parcel of covers--numbers by Sonny Rollins, Woody Herman, Pat Metheny, and others. Monaco steps up to the vocal mic to sing two songs, "Luck Be a Lady" and "Me and Mrs. Jones." A trio of horn players guest, but the classic organ trio is at the heart of the proceedings, and a tight little engine they are. --David GreenbergerCustomer Reviews:
White guy playin' the blues. Really disappointing........2006-05-27
As Tony Monaco goes, "intimately live at the 501" is a far more musical album.
Track 2 is Groove Holmes.......2004-12-04
Of course, Tony is excellent. Local Hammond technician heard him at Cafe 123 here in Nashville, after the 2004 NAMM show... said that Tony brought the organ down to a whisper, and moved him to tears.
There's No Pork With These Chops.......2002-07-26
It hard to believe that "White Dude Special" was written when he was only 16. The original on Monaco's website has the same flavor but one can certainly see how advanced Tony's chops have developed.
Like the previous reviewer, living close to Philly, I am definitely a B3 fan and Monaco is at the top my list.
There's even something from the 70s for middle agers - "Pick Up The Pieces" has a phat bass groove.
Buy the CD. You won't be disappointed. I own all of Monaco's CD and can't wait for his next release in September 2002.
