Despite the times in which he lived, Paul Desmond was never one to succumb to either exoticism or the purely funky, so rarefied was his butterfly tone and his delicate phrasing. Still, here, with Connie Kay's drums prodding him, and a recent trip to Brazil heightening his bossa nova senses, Desmond goes as musically far afield as he would ever travel with "Take Ten," "El Prince," "Embarcadero," and bossas such as "Samba de Orpheu" and "The Theme from Black Orpheus." He negotiates the Brazilian material as gracefully as a Stan Getz, but as always with Desmond it's the ballads that stay in the memory, and here "Nancy," "Out of Nowhere," and "Alone Together" are as sweetly played as is imaginable within the jazz tradition. Jim Hall's guitar is as fine as it has ever been, his chorded melody lines always surprising, his single-string work pure Charlie Christian revisionism, all of it in service of creating a swing setting for Desmond. The occasional fade and the unreleased longer takes of "El Prince" and "Embarcadero" suggest that RCA was thinking of Desmond in pop terms, and probably correctly so, for his solos--gemlike miniatures as they are--do not need development to make their point. --John F. Szwed

5 out of 5 stars Dry Martini Music.......2004-08-22

I first owned this music on LP and then paid an exorbitant amount of money to buy it on CD as a Japanese import. I just couldn't gamble that it would ever appear in the States at a more reasonable price. That's how much I love this music! I am pleased to see that it is now available at that more reasonable price! Buy it! I hope that this reissue includes Desmond's original liner notes. Lucky for me his liner notes in my import are included in English as well as Japanese! Like the music contained on the disc Desmond's written words are wry, witty, urbane, and cool. He was a very funny man and, of course, a great saxophone player. His soft light tone is always instantly recognizable and he seems to swing effortlessly. I believe I read somewhere that he had a deal with Dave Brubeck that if he recorded under his own name it wouldn't be with a piano in a quartet setting. If this is true music lovers can be grateful because Desmond and the sublime guitarist Jim Hall are totally simpatico. They recorded together a number of times; all of their collaborations are worth having. I also seem to remember that Desmond once compared his own playing to a dry martini. As a lover of dry martinis I couldn't agree more.....and if Paul didn't say that it is the kind of thing he would have said!

4 out of 5 stars Fan of Desmond and Getz.......2004-05-09

This is a response to the Sept., 2003 review by wsmorrell from Boise,
Idaho. While I agree that this is a great record and that Desmond is one
among the pantheon of jazz immortals, I strongly disagree with Morrell's
opinion of Stan Getz. Getz's creativity, sense of melody and smooth tone
made him the ideal American ambassador for Brazilian Bossa Nova.
Getz was a versatile genius and Bossa Nova was only one among many
jazz styles that he mastered. While Desmond and other jazz giants did
a wonderful job interpreting Bossa Nova, Getz remains unsurpassed in
my opinion. In conclusion, how could any real jazz fan say that Getz's
playing is clunky and heavy handed? I have never seen those words
used to describe his playing anywhere else. That ought to tell you
something.

5 out of 5 stars A Sophisticated Album.......2003-09-30

Though Stan Getz always is credited for being Americas great interpreter of Brazilian bossa, there was always a clunky, heavy handedness to his playing that was at odds with the quiet, understated cool of the original Brazilian material and artists. After a listen to this great recording, there is no question that Paul Desmonds' style, techique and taste are much more appropriate to the genre and leaves one to wonder how much better things would have been, had Paul been teamed up with Jao & Astrud Gilberto instead of Mr. Getz on those early "American" bossa albums. This CD covers some great material and showcases the incredible, subtle finesse and talent of arguably one of the greatest sax players of American jazz. This CD is a steal at this price and is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Listening Enjoyment.......2003-06-08

Being a musician and buying jazz records for study purposes often, very rarely has a record moved me so to just put down my saxaphone and listen for the pure thrill of listening to great music. Each song here has that loose, casual, joyful feel that can only be attained by musicians of this caliber. They are not playing for other listeners on this album, they are playing for themselves, and that is what captivates you and draws you in to this album on such a personal level. Paul Desmond and Jim Hall are two of the most unique and original to ever play their particular instrument, but you can infer that from listening to any record with Jim Hall or Paul Desmond. This album is not about that but about how those two combine their ingenious melodic ideas to form something so incredibly unique and brilliant it can't be can't be put into words in this short review. The idea of solos that are both textbook in fundamentals and beautiful to listen to is something signature of both these musicians, but it is especially present on this album. The softness of these tunes is so intense that you must close your eyes and tune out everything around you when you put on this record. The best tracks are 'Theme for Black Orpheus', 'Embarcedaro', and all the rest. 'Nuff said. Buy the record!

5 out of 5 stars Coolý.......2000-06-18

I guess everybody knows Paul Desmond from "Time out" and from his composition Take Five. On this recording, it doesn't take much time to recognize his beautiful floating tone, his wonderful solos which are new melodies by themselves, his "cool jazz" signature. On this repertoire -- mostly bossa nova tunes, plus a few standards -- Paul Desmond and Jim Hall (on the guitar) rival of grace: their solos are full of twists and turns, they never hurry and they both contribute to create a very relaxed atmosphere. Connie Kay's drums add some sun to this session. Everything sounds so clean and sweet! Though, they escape the tentation of playing "too easy", thanks to their always surprising lines. The result is very even and this is an extremely pleasant recording overall.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

    5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
    Bravo Rhino!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mackerras champions Janacek brilliantly!.......2003-04-07

What a combo Amazon offers Janacek fans. "Jenufa" and "The Cunning little Vixen" are absolute masterpieces and in the hands of the composer's greatest interprepter, Mackerras, these recordings are non-pareil. The singing of Soderstrom and Lucia Popp make any other recordings a redundancy and an act of futility. Ravishingly beautiful is the only way to describe their performances. These superb recrodings are in the case of "Vixen" , a momument to the healing power of the act of creation. and in the case of "Jenufa" a monument to the victory of human compassion and its power of heallng.. All singers bring glory to the music and the Vienna Philarmonic plays as one born to perform this music as no other orchestra. These cds belong in your collection: deeply moving experiences that only improve upon contnued listering. Bravo to Mackerras for his one man renaissance of Janacek's masterpieces. Let us not forget "Katya Kabanova" a third member of this holy trio. As in "Jeunfa" Sodertsrom triumphs in this work as well.

5 out of 5 stars Cunning Little Recording.......2003-01-19

Excellent recording of an intruguing work. I bought this particular recording because of the strong lineup of musicians: Sir Charles Mackerras conducts- he seems to be one of the reigning Janacek experts these days, and Lucia Popp is a very highly charged Vixen. Of course, the orchestra (Vienna Philharmonic) deserves recognition, too- they did a fine job on this recording. I don't know many different interpretations of this opera, having mainly just listened to this CD set countless times, but it's definitely worth owning.

If you don't feel like spending the money for CD's of the entire opera, the condensed [orchestral] version is also well-written, but it does leave out some fine musical moments. The orchestral version has been recorded many times by different people, and it's relatively easy to find.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful animal opera.......2002-05-29

Czech composer Leos Janacek wrote a series of operas late in his life: Kat'ia Kabanova, Cunning Little Vixen, The Makropoulos Affair, and From the House of the Dead, in that order. All are magnificent, standing with the very best work of the Czech masters Smetana and Dvorak. Even among those late operas, though, Vixen stands out because of its vibrant orchestration and easy approachability. It is quite popular, and it has even been featured in an animated version for TV by Geoff Dunbar of Peter Rabbit fame.

The story revolves around the Vixen, who is a real fireball, always gracefully foxing her way in and out of tough situations with the force of her personality. This character is played by a soprano in a fox costume, in this case Lucia Popp. I'm not sure if she wore the costume in the studio, but she may well have, because she gives her part a wonderful vivaciousness and gusto - you can almost imagine glistening fangs as she heatedly preaches to the hens about oppression. Her spirited tone adds immeasurably to the recording as a whole.

The adult male leads, who play human parts (the Schoolmaster, the Forester, and the poacher Harasta), also do a very fine job. In particular, their Czech diction is exemplary, though with the sound of the Vixen resonating in the ears they sometimes sound Germanic by comparison.

And the children! The dance at the beginning of Act III, which depicts the Vixen with her cubs recognizing and defusing a trap, is one of the greatest examples of synthesized folk music I've ever encountered. The children's choir hired for this recording sing the melody, built on the Lydian mode and the whole-tone scale, flawlessly, vigorously and rhythmically.

Through all this, Mackerras shows the utmost sympathy to the bright colors and poignant orchestrational details. And the Vienna Philharmonic, often among the most conservative of ensembles, play brightly and faithfully, with solo passages that sound exotic and brilliantly evoke animal sounds.

This is simply a great recording. Not to be missed.

    4 out of 5 stars Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

5 out of 5 stars So many great songs.......2007-02-26

So many great songs almost lost. How is it possible that a Kander & Ebb song like Mr Ten Percent got cut? This CD is worth its cost for that one song alone, but this disc is chock full of great songs that didn't make it to opening night...

5 out of 5 stars The Missing Songs from Some Major Musicals.......2003-12-02

This is the first of four CDs that contain recordings of songs that for one reason or another were cut from their shows. Highlights include:

From 110 DEGREES IN THE SHADE:
"Sweetriver" - replaced in the show by "Love Don't Look Away", parts of the melody appear in "Everything Beautiful Happens at Night".
"Flibbertigibbet" - became "Raunchy" in the musical. The music is pretty much the same, but the lyrics are a bit different.

      From THE KING AND I:
"Waiting" - Anna sings her frustration of being kept waiting for weeks to see the King. This song was cut after the premier of the show in New Haven.

      From FIDDLER ON THE ROOF:
"Dear, Sweet Sewing Machine" - A lullaby sung at the start of the second act by the tailor and Tzeitel. Cut because audiences in previews just didn't respond.

      From WEST SIDE STORY:
"Like Everybody Else" - a short fugue for the delinquents A-Rab (the "Shrimp"), Baby John (the young one) and Anybodys (the girl) intended to lighten up the first act. This song was edged out by "Gee, Officer Krupke".

      From PETER PAN:
"When I Went Home" - a ballad sung by Peter about the time he tried to go back to his old life, and found everyone had moved on. Seems to have been replaced by the lullaby "Distant Melody".

      From ANNIE GET YOUR GUN:
Annie's song about keeping her ego in check when she sees herself on the larger-than-life poster advertising the show. Cut possibly because the melody was too challenging to sing.

Other tracks on this CD include songs cut from CHICAGO, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, PROMISES PROMISES, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, FIORELLO!, SILK STOCKINGS and THE HAPPY TIME.

If you enjoyed this CD, you must check out the other three in the series. Also, the same label, Varese Sarabande, has a series and a few composer albums of UNSUNG MUSICALS.

4 out of 5 stars ONCE ON THIS ISLAND RULES.......2001-07-02

I'm not usually one to buy a CD for just one track...but in this case, I have to admit, that's precisely what I did. Anyone who has seen the musical, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND or had a chance to listen to its soundtrack will be won over. The idea that there were songs cut from this marvelous, "every song is a winner" album, was just impossible for me to resist. And WHEN DANIEL MARRIES in this CD does not disappoint. La Chanze's voice is absolutely marvelous. And the bonus? The other tracks are pleasing and fun for any Broadway buff: Liz Callaway's HONEY from Merrily We Roll Along is musically winning. I also liked the songs cut from GYPSY and FLOWER DRUM SONG. For an impulsive buy, I was completely rewarded. I have also ordered the other CD in the series for the ONCE ON THIS ISLAND song, DOWN FROM THE TREE...which also carries a Liz Callaway song. For musical enthusiasts, this series is a nice collector's item...and something to play on a rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars The first in this great series.......2001-02-13

This CD is the first in a fine series of four releases consisting of songs cut from well-known musicals. Just about any successful musical has had songs cut from it, not always because the song wasn't good, but because it no longer fit the show as updated, or a character or scene was cut (the booklet explains why each song was removed from its show). The songs are all good, some better than others or course, and the performances are wonderful. My favorites are "Ten Percent" (cut from Chicago), "Come Down from the Tree" (Once on this Island), "An English Music Hall" (Mystery of Edwin Drood), and "Take it in your Stride" (Annie Get Your Gun). Bruce Kimmel was smart in using show singers instead of pop singers. I recommend the entire series. This one's a great start and a fine addition to any show music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Lost Songs From Musicals Are Fun To Hear!!.......2001-01-18

The "Lost In Boston" series, starting with this first disc, is a great set to have. There are some songs that are pretty apparent as to why they were cut from the show, but others that you might scratch your head about. Some great performers get the opportunity to record these hardly, if ever, heard before songs and preserve them on disc.

Of particular note on this particular disc are Lillias White singing "Come Down From The Tree" from "Once On This Island." This is a beautiful, beautiful song and while it may not have worked on stage, it works very well on CD.

From such classical musicals as "The King And I" comes "Waiting." This song, designed as a trio between the King, Anna, and the Krahalome is interesting to hear, but definitely is not on the same page as "Getting to Know You" or "Something Wonderful," both classic songs from the show.

Also of interest are the songs from "West Side Story," "Fiddler On The Roof," and what was almost the song that Annie Oakley sang in "Annie Get Your Gun" instead of "There's No Business Like Show Business."

This is a fun disc. It does have that overproduced sound that tends to be Bruce Kimmel's trademark, but it's still interesting to hear what almost made it in.
