Although very good, as Jazzmasters typically is, I think this album may have fallen somewhat short on my expectation list. In fact, I'm slightly disappointed. Hopefully, I'm the only fan that feels this way.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Paul Hardcastle never disappoints.......2007-01-12

This is my thirteenth CD by Paul Hardcastle, and I hope he's still got lots more to come. Some people, including radio announcers, seem to think "The Jazzmasters" is the name of a group rather than an album title, but it's still Paul Hardcastle. For some reason, he alternates between names for each release.

If I had heard any song in this collection on the radio for the first time, I would have said, "Ooh, that sounds like Paul Hardcastle!" -- and that's a good thing. I love the way his music somehow always manages to be relaxing without being boring, rhythmic without being too intrusive, and sensuous enough to make a great soundtrack for whatever you're up to.

I often put on a disk of his when having dinner, or relaxing after a stressful day. Every song on this one had the desired effect, but many were appealing enough that I'd look over at the stereo and think "Ooh, I like that one. What's that one called?"

Whenever his next release comes out, I'll be buying that too.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-01-10

Ever since hearing my first album by Hardcastle I have purhcased several more. I love them all. I play them in my car especially when driving long distance. Very pleasant ride listening to them. I will be a fan forever.

A MUST HAVE for lovers of smooth jazz. Hardcastle`s compositions bring together a blend of instruments that makes this genre compelling. The inclusion of three pieces with a lady with vocal clarity, Helen Rogers, work magic with Snake Davis' horn and add depth of this album. Hardcastle's interpretation of "Children of the ghetto" with Rogers on vocals is a work of art.

Let me be the first to say this has to be the best compilation of tracks ever. When I first played this whole album I almost had an accident becase of all of the songs on here. They have to be the best and Paul Hardcastle and The Jazzmasters did it again! I love this whole album and he needs to keep upthe best work. Since I was 18 I've been listening to Paul, and I think that I'm the youngets person that I've met that listens to him. Keep up the good work and I can't wait for the next one!

I bought this CD to add to my Hardcastle collection. I am never disappointed in his ability to entertain. Many of the creations in this cd, like all the others, take on a feeling of reverie that only a true jazz lover can appreciate. Helen Rogers is a regular featured vocalist on his cds. Her voice adds a pinch of the right spice to culminate into music that one can really relate to emotionally. Their version of the Stevie Nicks mega-hit "Dreams" is one of the examples of Pauls unwavering ability to mesmerize his audience with his music. Check out this CD. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Hardcastle In Springtime.......2003-05-29

"Jazzmasters III" was the CD that turned me into a diehard Paul Hardcastle fan. I'd always liked Paul's hit song from the 80's about Vietnam veterans, "19," but "Jazzmasters III" really made me sit up and take notice of the man's music. I was shopping in a music store back in '99, when I heard this album on the overhead speakers, and I was so taken with the dreamy, cool-breeze quality of the music, that I bought the album right then and there, and I've been listening to Mr. Hardcastle's catalog ever since. With Hardcastle brilliantly playing every instrument except saxophone (Snake Davis handles the sax), and featuring the lovely, soulful vocals of Helen Rogers, "Jazzmasters III" is a very cool, very smooth, very *groovy* disc to play. Songs like the dreamy "London In Springtime," the so-very-catchy "Don't Let It Get You Down," the acoustic charmer "Down So Low," and the light grooves of "Still Thinking" are just marvelous. Hardcastle also delivers some incredible, atmospheric instrumentals throughout, like the appropriately-titled "Lost In Space," "Nightcrawler," "Starchild," the super-funky "Trippin' Rhythm," "New Dawn," and "Red Zone." And for the cherry on top, there's a pair of wonderful, breezy covers of America's hit song, "Ventura Highway," and Fleetwood Mac's classic, "Dreams." Fabulous, both of them.Quite simply, Paul Hardcastle is the undisputed King Of Smooth Jazz, with Helen Rogers the perfect vocalist for Hardcastle's tasty tunes, and Snake Davis contributes some fine sax-blowing throughout. This album is just so good! I strongly recommend ALL of Paul's albums, but "Jazzmasters III" was the one that started it all for me as a Hardcastle fan. It's a great place for you to start, too. Pick it up!

    3 out of 5 stars Okay wasn't the best.......2002-08-14

Thought that this cd was rather disapointing. Too many different styles in this album. "London in Springtime" and "London Chimes" are exactly the same on has vocals the other doesn't. But anyway, it is still a good cd and you should put it in the collection.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-03-29

I really like this cd. The music is very good, the vocals are very good, and the engineering and mixing are very good. That being said, the songs are far too short, especially the non-vocal ones. I realize that Paul Hardcastle knows his target market, and that is smooth jazz radio stations. I would like to have seen about half of the amount of songs, and twice as much time per each song.

4 out of 5 stars paul hardcastle jazzmasters 4.......2005-11-10

A friend of mine gave me the cd as a gift, I have been playing it for the last two days and i love the cd. I have not had a hardcastle in several years and I will get more of his stuff now.

5 out of 5 stars In defense of "If You Knew".............2005-03-25

After reading the unfavorable reviews of the closing track "If You Knew" I feel highly compelled to write my opinino of this controversial track. Although I'm NO fan of most rap music by any stretch of the imagination, I really, REALLY love the rap part of the song which places a very talented rap verse over the track "Peace On Earth". Although I prefer the song in it's instrumental version, the rap chorus is really well rhymed and is very good. Although it may at first sound like another ghetto-thumping track, this song actually attacks the glorification of ghetto-life and instead showcases the rappers tough childhood in a very vivid imagination. Many people seem to be offended by this track and view it as "Hell On Earth" but this song isn't anywhere near as disturbing or terrifying to me as was Paul's famous hit "19" was 20 years back. "19" is a classic don't get me wrong but the song scared the daylights out of me when I first heard it but "If You Knew" doesn't do that on such a scale. Overall though, "If You Knew" is one of the most daring moves that Paul has ever done but it pays off well. Wonderful Job!

As for the rest of this album, "Jazzmasters 4" is another inspiring home run for Hardcastle's arc of music over the last 20 years and 14 years since his Jazzmasters 1 album took me by storm when I was a small child when it was released. The fourth entry under the Jazzmasters moniker doesn't necessarily break a lot of new ground but this could perhaps be one of the most inspiring releases of all time, perhaps the best since 1994's "Hardcastle Volume 1" aka the "hands" album.

"Valley of The Harps" is a groovy dance track with those lovely Hardcastle sounds as well as some beautiful harps interspersed throughout the track. The reprise part of the track though while great sounds unfinished. "Feeling Blue" may have a deceiving title as the mood of the song is far from being `blue' as it is a very joyous track with gorgeous keyboards and lovely New Age/pop atmospherics. The vocals of Helen Rogers as always are absolutely lovely. Besides the final track, my favorite standout tracks are "Emerald Stardust" and "How Long Before We Get it Right". "Emerald Stardust" is perhaps one of the strangest songs that Paul has released in a very long time and in fact departs a bit from his trademark sound and instead has a bizarre mix of electronic sound effects and a very light beat. The ambient atmospherics are stunningly beautiful and the lyrics are entrancing such as the "Swimming in Emerald Stardust....So Beautiful" which put me in a blissful trance.

While there aren't major standout tracks like "Northern Lights" "Nightcrawler" or "Lost Summer" but on average, this could very well be the most even and consistent album that Hardcastle has released in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS.......2005-01-13

This Album is very good. Each tracks sounds fresh and current. I like the idea used in the last track (Putting a rap over a track).....but the rap in that song is just awful. I have heard much better raps than than which were non-violent and positive like the one used by Kid Crab. Who ever he is. Other than that....Album is wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars Jazzmasters 4.......2004-04-30

All I can say is Paul Hardcastle is incapable of making a bad CD.
He is my absolute favorite smooth jazz artist. He has a style like no other. Each CD is better than the last, and this latest is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Paul Hardcastle with Vocals.......2006-05-04

If you like Paul's songs with vocals then this is the album for you! All the tracks here have vocals (mostly sung by Helen Rogers) and there is not one fully instrumental track here. Some (if not all) of his best tracks with vocals are here: "Dreams", "London in Springtime", "Can you hear me", "Ventura Highway", "Heaven" and the amazing "You may be gone" with vocals by Steve Menzies.

Definitely another album for your Hardcastle collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Paul & Helen.......2004-07-15

A new greatest hits album put out by popular demand, "Jazzmasters: The Smooth Cuts" collects some of the best vocal tracks that composer/multi-instrumentalist Paul Hardcastle has recorded over the years, mostly with his most-frequent Jazzmasters singing partner, the soulful Helen Rogers (though two tracks on the album feature other singers). These songs are brilliant, catchy, and, of course, *smooth*. Many popular Hardcastle/Helen Rogers songs are featured, including "London In Springtime," "Lifetime," "Wonderland," "Runnin' Back," "Down So Low," and "Emerald Stardust," as well as the awesome covers of America's "Ventura Highway," and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams." Also included is the beautifully heartfelt "You May Be Gone" (sung by Steve Menzies), and the groovy "It Must Be Love" (sung by Jaki Graham). Obviously, as there's only so much room on a single CD, there are other favorite Hardcastle tracks with vocals that are NOT included, such as "Don't Let It Get You Down," "Sounds Of Summer," "Got To Be Love," "Livin' In The Shadows," the cool cover of Pink Floyd's "Money," and many others. Nevertheless, "Jazzmasters: The Smooth Cuts" is a heavenly sampling of the heavenly smooth jazz music of Paul Hardcastle, with the lovely voice of Helen Rogers featured on most of the tracks. If you're a newcomer to Paul's music, this is a great CD to start with. I recommend it most highly!

5 out of 5 stars I'd been looking for this album for 4 years!!!.......2007-01-07

I first got a recording of this CD without knowing who was playing in it or what it was called. It is a great CD, with extreme talent living within each song. I've been searching for years to find this album, and I finally found it!

John Faddis is an awesome trumpet screamer -- one of the best. As a trumpet player, this CD is candy to my ears.

Buy..........the..........CD!!! Everyone needs to hear Jazz Masters at work.

    5 out of 5 stars great band!.......2001-05-12

Dizzy was a true master. He has spread his mastery onto countless numbers of people including all who are on this great cd. Jon Faddis is an extreme player. He plays high, low, loud, soft, fast, slow, furious, and beautiful. His highnotes are very controlled and have a great tone. The big disappointment of the cd is the fact that Slide Hampton does not solo. He arranges many of the songs and plays in the band, but has no improvisation. Steve Turre does take a couple of nice trombone solos.

The arrangements by Slide are some of the best ever. Lush full orchestration with unique colors being used together.

Roy Hargrove also plays in the band, as well as Lewis Nash, and Jimmy Heath. With them and other well known players, the band is truly an all star assembledge. All great Gillespie tunes made for a bebop big band(3sax,3tbone,3trpt,rhythm section). Worth twice as much as the asking price.

    5 out of 5 stars virtuosity.......1999-12-21

virtuosity. dynamics. music. this is one of the most amazing albums i have heard. when you assemble some of the greatest players of bop into a singular, cohesive unit and record it live, something magical is recorded for all time. buy the album!

5 out of 5 stars Hampton, Heath, and Faddis: Energetic jazz at its best!.......1999-06-17

This is one of those CDs that is a MUST in every jazz collectors library. This all-star tribute to Diz includes the talents of John Faddis and Jimmy Heath in addition to Slide Hampton. These three play off each other so well that their solos are more like musical "conversations" with each other, rather than a single musical monologue. Fantastic Be-Bop energy! Diz would be proud.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smooth. Passionate. A Sensual Music Experience........1999-02-20

As with JAZZMASTERS (which I also have), on JAZZMASTERS II, Paul Hardcastle keeps the music hot without resorting to hard-core and the vocals passionate but mellow; perfectly blending Jazz, R&B and easy listening. A MUST LISTEN with that special someone or just while relaxing with a glass of wine and a good book.

5 out of 5 stars This is Hardcastle at his finest !.......1998-12-18

Wish that more artists had the flair, passion, sensuality, and charisma that Paul Hardcastle brings to his productions. Anyone who believes in love and romance must have Mr. Hardcastles' entire collection.
