A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Vibrania rool!.......2003-03-05

Finally I found this '75 album on CD, it is classic.
Every song is great. Harvey, though not very famous in US
had a big underground following here. "Snake Bite" guitar by Zal Cleminson is venomously catchy. In surround sound on disc cranked up "Give my Compliments to the Chef" gives new meaning to a satisfactory meal. Everytime I play any songs from these albums people notice and ask who it is. I highly recommend you

5 out of 5 stars Hail, Vibrania!.......2002-12-05

I first saw SAHB in the late 70s on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert and was instantly hooked. Alex and his band fully achieved what others of the era (Alice Cooper, The Tubes, etc.) could only dream of: full-blown kick-a** rock opera with heaping spoonfuls of sly sarcastic wit that really worked.

Alex drew from a broad pallette of styles and tastes to meld into his own fantastic constructions. Pay attention to what you hear, because in about 30 seconds he will swerve into an entirely fresh take on the theme. He weaves through the music absurd yet unforgettable lyrics which build to a strangely delightful mythology. Witness: "Come up and let me analyse you / Said the monkey to the weasel / And I'll paint your picture on the wall / If you can buy the easel / And I told my story to the cannibal king /Said baby baby shake that thing."

After 20 years without these albums, I recently bought this CD set. I instantly remembered all of the lyrics, and the hooks are better than ever. These 2 albums represent SAHB's best work, with "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" taking the prize for being solid from beginning to end.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A timeless masterpiece.......2006-04-05

I recently bought this album after reading very promising reviews on Amazon.com. From the first song it became clear that this is a classic. The album is ten years old but it could have been released yesterday or, for that matter, thirty years ago. This music is equally good to listen to on a romantic evening or a quiet morning. Absolutely timeless. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars ethereal...yet down to earth beauty.......2006-01-23

i'm not sure that i was fully prepared for the absolute new standard of beauty that was formed in my heart when i first heard this lovely little album back in 1996. when the first sweet sounds floated out of my speakers, time seems to have stood still until the moments passed after the final track had played. the guitars strum ever so gently and sweetly, and Rachel's voice is absolutely heaven sent. and it was really great to hear her voice in all it's natural glory (as compared to her processed vocal tracks on Slowdive albums). i was already a huge Slowdive fan, but Mojave 3's Ask me Tomorrow has such a warm, organic mellow sound that seems a bit easier to embrace, as compared to Slowdive's distant (yet brilliant) shoegazer sound. hey, honestly, i still like Slowdive better, overall. why? because their albums were consistently better. and this particular Mojave 3 album is the only one that i have fully loved. the others following are good, but not great as this one, in my opinion. so if you like music that sounds like a nice warm bath with a gentle haunting scent of honeydew and lilac on the wind, then slip this inside your stereo and drift away.

4 out of 5 stars Love Me Today.......2005-06-04

A haunting and beautiful collection of songs that is more raw and less produced than their later, more polished work. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not just their debut: a musical landmark.......2004-08-10

Four months. That is how long is has been since I first listened to this beautiful creation by the former shoegazer band Slowdive that was reborn as Mojave 3 in the mid-nineties. This production from 1996 was not just their debut, but also a musical landmark for themselves and for music in general. It is one of those albums you can never get enough of, you cannot stop playing and you will always be able to go back to, because it is timeless yet powerful. This is something that can be hard to believe from an album that consists basically of voices, rhythm (slide and regular) guitars, piano and percussion. But it is so.

The two things that come to mind when I hear it are the quiet songs from Velvet Underground (for the voices), and Beck's 'Sea Change' (for the exquisite melancholy it conveys). I cannot say it enough: this is an album that needs to be a part of anyone remotely serious about music or life. If you don't believe me yet, just check out the sample for the opening track, and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2004-02-18

From start to finish one of the greatest albums ever created. Heartbreaking, bittersweet, introspective, and unbearably beautiful. It's been four years since I discovered this album, and I still listen to it regularly.

Nice little import job from the UK indie label RPM.More or less a companion CD for the band's self-titled disc(see my review).A total of sixteen tracks in which the first eight are a collection of demos and alternate edits of "Blow-Up" from the motion picture that I HEARD the band didn't get to appear in and "Am I Glad To See You" as well as couple of tunes from the TV show Top Gear,"Three Jolly Little Dwarfs" and their signature song "Revolution".The next eight are a REAL treat,a 27-minute live recording from their appearance at the 'Christmas On Earth' December 1967 gig. With tunes like "Caught In A Web","My White Bicycle",drummer Twink's "Mr.Rainbow" and "Strawberry Fields Forever",one gets to experience a one-time event. The sound is a bit dismal, but VERY acceptable considering it's rarity.Old time psych fans shouldn't have a problem with it.From this fan's view,it looked like Tomorrow was highly involved with THAT time's underground music scene.Great psychedelic cover, wouldn't you say?

4 out of 5 stars Another trip with Steve Howe and Keith West.......2000-05-31

Tomorrow, with guitarist Steve Howe and vocalist Keith West released only one eponymous album during their brief tenure. RPM has gathered previously unreleased studio recordings, two tracks from BBC's Top Gear sessions and 8 live tracks from December 1967 onto this compilation, for a total of 16 tracks and 56 minutes. More important as a historical document than for its sound quality this album certainly has its moments--it is interesting to hear a live version of "My White Bicycle", although the sound quality of the live tracks leaves much to be desired. The studio takes on the other hand are of excellent sound quality, but of inferior material quality than those included on the bands one album. Nonetheless, "50 Minute Technicolor Dream" has a place in the collections of those who are Tomorrow fans, Steve Howe fans, and fans of British psychedelia in general. Make sure you have Tomorrow's self-titled debut album before purchasing this one, but if you accept the sound quality as is, this is an intersting piece. The unissued studio take of "Caught In A Web" is excellent, as is the previously unissued phased version of "Revolution." Sound quality aside this is a nice collection.

Mournful, late-night soul mining from an English act led by singers Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead. They've evidently spent time with the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions, since that album's minimal, ghostly mood is shared by these nine gentle originals. "Mercy," the closer, is the lone track that raises its voice beyond a soothing whisper. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Calm, peaceful and serene all describe the music of Mojave 3.......1998-05-26

The songs of Mojave 3 can best be described as calming. The lovely melodies are reminiscent of clouds floating slowly across an ocean sky, changing their shapes almost imperceptibly as one watches them. "love songs" especially, brings this peace--the song which tells of someone's ideal woman, one who reflects the joy and love of those around her, as in the line "lovers all around her, she wears them like a jewel." The music flows from the artists as the love from this woman--they are one with it, they sing with a knowledge of beauty and serenity. The reason Mojave 3 is rated as an 8 and not a 10 is that as nice and pretty as the music is, it is not something many could listen to day in and out. It is delicate, and listeners sometimes need a bit of fire and truly happy, powerful music to balance Mojave 3 out.

4 out of 5 stars A Lovely Version with Less To Complain About...........2006-12-17

I don't see what all the complaints are about.

This is one of my favorite Rosenkavaliers.

True, I prefer the Crespin recording with Solti above all the rest. And a close second is Szell's sublime live 1949 recording with Reining--sounding fresher than she later does in the studio for Kleiber (although Sena Jurinac is never anyone to sneeze at). But this is a respectable third place for me--in a very crowded field.

The sound of this Gala release is not as bad as some on this site complain. I have an equalizer in my mp3 software =--it's free in Winamp--and that adjusts quite nicely for the somewhat muffled quality of this 1978 live recording. There are clearer sounding live recordings, even some made 30 or more years earlier! But there's less sound of stage business than in most live recordings.

Von Dohnanyi has a mostly lyrical approach to the music. He doesn't emphasize the dissonance the way von Karajan does--yet he is not overly sentimental as Karajan also is. Von Dohnanyi plays more with the tempi: he's not as rhythmically propulsive as Szell. But he keeps things moving well enough. And the dynamics are lovely and appropriate--to my ears, anyway.

If you ask me, Janowitz is a bit off her game here--most at the outset. It's like she's warming up a bit. And I hear the bad note that Popp sings towards the end. There are two actually. The first is harsh but not atrocious. I've heard worse in other recordings of this same opera. The second is just the wrong pitch, and it also seems like a problem of vocal control, too.

But hey, ladies and gentlemen, it's live on stage, and things happen up there.

Isn't it kind of sublimely human?

      3 out of 5 stars A Marred Gem.......2006-05-29

Great singing by all the principals.... to the next to last note. Sound quality is rather bad, tho. This is a live recording and it sounds like it was recorded from out side the dress circle! Sound engineering is so needed that 1 1/2 stars are omitted on that account. I wish they had editted out some of the background noise since the singing is so exquisite here. The 3 female voices are distinguishable from each other and they mesh so well in the trio and duets.

Another half a star is lost sadly due to a rather pronounced miss by the usually wonderful Lucia Popp. Tho I admire her gut in holding the bad note, so it doesn't sound that bad if you aren't very familiar with how the music goes (if you are, tho, she missed it quite noticeably low on the last note where any mistake would jump out like a sore thumb). Even with that the ending still retains a very nostalgic sounding (it is possible to interpret the off-tone note as Sophie losing herself in love). And if anything it might be a motivation to buy this recording.... How many bad notes had Lucia Popp ever been caught recording? This might well be the only one! It is a bargain recording. There are better ones of Der Rosenkavalier out there, to be sure.

The opera is sung in German... just in case you get curious about the track details in English above.

1 out of 5 stars CD NOT TO BUY.......2006-03-14

The quality of this CD is terrible and horrible

Just to remove from your list

      3 out of 5 stars OK, but..........2002-08-31

Just a quick review from me.

This recording is seriously marred by the bad audio quality. It is indeed stereo but any sense of high frequencies is completely missing. It has an extremely muffled texture. It is exhausting to listen to because one has to struggle to hear the individual musical lines. I have both the highlight cd and the complete version.

I love Gundula Janowitz but she never recorded Rosenkavalier comercially. This version has too big bloopers by Janowitz in the last act. It sounds so atrocious it turns out to be hysterically funny. The CD might be worth it for that alone.

If you want Janowitz then check out the newly issued live version recorded 9 years earlier on Opera D'oro. She is in much better voice, the sound is better and the conducting is more exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Superb version! Superb Janowitz! But..........2001-10-01

Yes, this version is very worth buying and loving as previously described! But first of all wait for the complete issue already available in Europe under "Gala" label in 3 cds. The sound in there is spacious (not at all ugly as earlier said) and in true stereo!
Then Janowitz is wonderful as the Marschallin although I'm personally not 100% fan of her voice in opera, always lacking some warmth. But I must recognize she's astonishing here.
Minton is ardent but not as much as Fassbaender. However she does not encounter any problem with the part even in the high tessura. Popp is much better recording than in the set of Myto from The Scala with Kleiber Jr. conducting. The voice is full of pure silver. If only she did not miss her very last up note at the very end sounding really too low!!
Moll as Ochs has the voice of the role but he doesn't know it perfectly yet. Obviously he would be fantastic a few years later (and he will with Karayan or Kleiber again).
Counter-parts are interesting indeed with Pavarotti, Gutstein but not memorable though.
A recording not to miss in any case, one of the first three of that opera (along with Kleiber/Myto and Kraus/Melodram hard to find but with Reining in full voice, della Casa admirable, Gueden perfect as Sophie and Boehme exciting as Ochs).
