A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Vibrania rool!.......2003-03-05
Every song is great. Harvey, though not very famous in US
had a big underground following here. "Snake Bite" guitar by Zal Cleminson is venomously catchy. In surround sound on disc cranked up "Give my Compliments to the Chef" gives new meaning to a satisfactory meal. Everytime I play any songs from these albums people notice and ask who it is. I highly recommend you
"Send the roadies out for more..."
Hail, Vibrania!.......2002-12-05
Alex drew from a broad pallette of styles and tastes to meld into his own fantastic constructions. Pay attention to what you hear, because in about 30 seconds he will swerve into an entirely fresh take on the theme. He weaves through the music absurd yet unforgettable lyrics which build to a strangely delightful mythology. Witness: "Come up and let me analyse you / Said the monkey to the weasel / And I'll paint your picture on the wall / If you can buy the easel / And I told my story to the cannibal king /Said baby baby shake that thing."
After 20 years without these albums, I recently bought this CD set. I instantly remembered all of the lyrics, and the hooks are better than ever. These 2 albums represent SAHB's best work, with "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" taking the prize for being solid from beginning to end.

Not just their debut: a musical landmark.......2004-08-10
The two things that come to mind when I hear it are the quiet songs from Velvet Underground (for the voices), and Beck's 'Sea Change' (for the exquisite melancholy it conveys). I cannot say it enough: this is an album that needs to be a part of anyone remotely serious about music or life. If you don't believe me yet, just check out the sample for the opening track, and you will see what I mean.

Mournful, late-night soul mining from an English act led by singers Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead. They've evidently spent time with the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions, since that album's minimal, ghostly mood is shared by these nine gentle originals. "Mercy," the closer, is the lone track that raises its voice beyond a soothing whisper. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:

A Lovely Version with Less To Complain About...........2006-12-17
I don't see what all the complaints are about.
This is one of my favorite Rosenkavaliers.
True, I prefer the Crespin recording with Solti above all the rest. And a close second is Szell's sublime live 1949 recording with Reining--sounding fresher than she later does in the studio for Kleiber (although Sena Jurinac is never anyone to sneeze at). But this is a respectable third place for me--in a very crowded field.
The sound of this Gala release is not as bad as some on this site complain. I have an equalizer in my mp3 software =--it's free in Winamp--and that adjusts quite nicely for the somewhat muffled quality of this 1978 live recording. There are clearer sounding live recordings, even some made 30 or more years earlier! But there's less sound of stage business than in most live recordings.
Von Dohnanyi has a mostly lyrical approach to the music. He doesn't emphasize the dissonance the way von Karajan does--yet he is not overly sentimental as Karajan also is. Von Dohnanyi plays more with the tempi: he's not as rhythmically propulsive as Szell. But he keeps things moving well enough. And the dynamics are lovely and appropriate--to my ears, anyway.
If you ask me, Janowitz is a bit off her game here--most at the outset. It's like she's warming up a bit. And I hear the bad note that Popp sings towards the end. There are two actually. The first is harsh but not atrocious. I've heard worse in other recordings of this same opera. The second is just the wrong pitch, and it also seems like a problem of vocal control, too.
But hey, ladies and gentlemen, it's live on stage, and things happen up there.
Isn't it kind of sublimely human?
--E. R. O'Neill
A Marred Gem.......2006-05-29
Another half a star is lost sadly due to a rather pronounced miss by the usually wonderful Lucia Popp. Tho I admire her gut in holding the bad note, so it doesn't sound that bad if you aren't very familiar with how the music goes (if you are, tho, she missed it quite noticeably low on the last note where any mistake would jump out like a sore thumb). Even with that the ending still retains a very nostalgic sounding (it is possible to interpret the off-tone note as Sophie losing herself in love). And if anything it might be a motivation to buy this recording.... How many bad notes had Lucia Popp ever been caught recording? This might well be the only one! It is a bargain recording. There are better ones of Der Rosenkavalier out there, to be sure.
The opera is sung in German... just in case you get curious about the track details in English above.
CD NOT TO BUY.......2006-03-14
Just to remove from your list
OK, but..........2002-08-31
This recording is seriously marred by the bad audio quality. It is indeed stereo but any sense of high frequencies is completely missing. It has an extremely muffled texture. It is exhausting to listen to because one has to struggle to hear the individual musical lines. I have both the highlight cd and the complete version.
I love Gundula Janowitz but she never recorded Rosenkavalier comercially. This version has too big bloopers by Janowitz in the last act. It sounds so atrocious it turns out to be hysterically funny. The CD might be worth it for that alone.
If you want Janowitz then check out the newly issued live version recorded 9 years earlier on Opera D'oro. She is in much better voice, the sound is better and the conducting is more exciting.
Superb version! Superb Janowitz! But..........2001-10-01
Then Janowitz is wonderful as the Marschallin although I'm personally not 100% fan of her voice in opera, always lacking some warmth. But I must recognize she's astonishing here.
Minton is ardent but not as much as Fassbaender. However she does not encounter any problem with the part even in the high tessura. Popp is much better recording than in the set of Myto from The Scala with Kleiber Jr. conducting. The voice is full of pure silver. If only she did not miss her very last up note at the very end sounding really too low!!
Moll as Ochs has the voice of the role but he doesn't know it perfectly yet. Obviously he would be fantastic a few years later (and he will with Karayan or Kleiber again).
Counter-parts are interesting indeed with Pavarotti, Gutstein but not memorable though.
A recording not to miss in any case, one of the first three of that opera (along with Kleiber/Myto and Kraus/Melodram hard to find but with Reining in full voice, della Casa admirable, Gueden perfect as Sophie and Boehme exciting as Ochs).
