5 out of 5 stars An "assault" with the best salsa ever produced.......2007-02-28

I had heard very good comments of this production since long ago and, in many opportunities, I was close to get one of those old vynil-made records but I didn't. For more than 30 years, I have listened to hundreds of times songs like "Canto a Borinquen", Traigo la Salsa", "La Murga Panameña" and the song which I like the most: "Aires de Navidad" (far the most famous of all of these group of salsas in my country, Perú). However, it is not the same to hear these songs evenly one here and other there than hearing all of them together, in the sequence presented in this CD. The context of them is really impressive and this makes the difference. This CD is really an outstanding production. The sound recorded is original all along and the presentation of the CD is quite illustrative, accompanied by a small brochure that gives us a good view of the history of these salsas and their meaning as a part of the culture of Puerto Rico. Dear friends, if you are fans of Salsa, buy it new or used but don't lose the pleasure of listen to all this precious music and let you be "assaulted" by Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe and their friens of Fania,no matter if Christmas time has gone..

5 out of 5 stars El mejor album de navidad .......2006-12-22

Recognizing that the holiday season really begins at Halloween (and, in some quarters, doesn't end until the Super Bowl), Vince Guaraldi and his record company have wisely assembled the hummable themes from various Charlie Brown TV specials. What we have here is the album's ability to communicate the playful irony and loopy, lovable characters that people Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip every week. Though only one actual Christmas tune is included--"Christmas Time Is Here," in both the vocal and instrumental versions--kids from ages 1 to 92 will still appreciate the "Great Pumpkin Waltz," the "Thanksgiving Theme," oddities such as "Heartburn Waltz" and "Joe Cool," and, of course, the "Charlie Brown Theme." --Martin Keller

3 out of 5 stars Useful for collectors but not the best.......2007-04-08

If you love Vince Guaraldi's music for the Peanuts shows as much as I do, you'll probably enjoy listening to "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits." But as some reviewers here point out, this is certainly not the CD to start with if you're new to this music. I'm making my own compilation of Guaraldi's Peanuts music, so this CD is valuable to me for providing some tracks I didn't have, especially since there is not a lot more of this music on the market other than "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas." However, start with those two soundtracks if you don't already have them. Also, the 1989 CD "Happy Anniversary, Charlie Brown" on the GRP label, which is music mostly by Guaraldi re-recorded by other artists, is also worth considering. "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits" is good for completing your collection, but 5 of the tracks on it are from those earlier soundtrack CDs, and of the 9 new tracks here, 7 are in mono, some are quite distorted too, and overall the music is not as good. Still, I'd say this is an enjoyable CD, and helps to complete your collection if you've already got "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Purchase!.......2007-01-10

Excellent disc, something you can listen to not only during the holidays. I would recommend this purchase to anyone. We like this disc more than the Charlie Brown Christmas one.

1 out of 5 stars Yuk!.......2006-12-20

Don't waste your money. I would send it back but my dad threw it away.

3 out of 5 stars The music is Good, but this isnt the charlie brown album to buy. .......2006-06-28

Vince guaraldi often gets a bad wrap from jazz critics, claiming that his music is soft and not deep enough to be considered great. I couldnt disagree with them more, after thelonius Monk he is the easiest jazz pianist to recognize upon listening to. His playing sings with a sense of joy unlike anybody else. And his best music was written for the peanuts cartoons.
However, this is not the peanuts disc to get. Most of the songs while charming and fun are short and underdevolped, surfin snoopy for example is energetic and catchy, but it sounds like it is just one short riff being played over and over again for 1:30. the songs that will best bring back the Holiday memories can all be found on " A Charlie Brown Christmas". I would also recomend that you buy " A Boy named charlie Brown " if you want even more peanuts music.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Scrooge! Buy this album. And Merry Christmas!.......2006-01-15

Listen Scrooge! Buy this album, it will put you in the Christmas spirit. And that's a good thing.

5 Bottle of "Conundrum" varietal (don't let the screw cap scare you)

9 Maybe some Time/Life X-mas stuff

Now how can you be depressed? Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!

4 out of 5 stars No Chico Hamilton, But..........2003-11-20

As some of the other reviewers have stated, there are indeed many unfortunate omissions on this cd that were included on the original vinyl release. Hopefully Sony will see fit in the near future to reissue the recordings as they originally appeared. Having said that, I will make two comments. First of all, Chico Hamilton's "Winter Wonderland" is indeed available on cd. It is on a Sony Music Special Products cd called simply "Jazz Christmas". It is available from amazon, and it's worth the search, even it if it is very short in length, and has tawdry packaging. To my knowledge, this is the only way to get the song on cd. Secondly, this is still a wonderful cd, and one I seem to never tire of hearing. McCoy Tyner's solo piano rendition of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is beautiful and reflective; Duke Ellington's raucous version of "Jingle Bells" is loads of fun; Carmen McRae's touching version of "The Christmas Song" still conjures up images of light snowfall with the faint glow of candles in the background; Dave Brubeck's midtempo rendition of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" has some wonderfully swinging alto work from the great Paul Desmond; Dexter Gordon is bluesy and swinging on "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas". All in all a fine and diverse Christmas cd with plenty of moods and melodies. Always worth hearing and worth owning despite the omissions.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Tradition in My House.......2003-01-08

This is a great CD in what's here. Dexter Gordon's solo on have Yourself.... is worth the price, and playable the other 11 months. What's interesting is that there are some outside arrangements (we three kings) along with the straight ahead material.

Worth buying!

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original.......2001-12-23

If you are looking for the Original (Columbia "CS8693") Jingle Bell Jazz (cover has Red Santa Sack full of gifts)issued October 17, 1962, THIS IS NOT IT. The reissue ("PC 36803")of Jingle Bell Jazz (cover has Snow filled N.Y. streets with Taxi Cabs)in September, 1973 is GREAT. This latest "reissue" IS NOT. If you are expecting either of the "Original" issues on CD, you will be greatly offended. There is no Chico Hamilton, no Paul Horn. In 1985, CBS stupidly combined Jingle Bell Jazz with another Columbia recording called God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen and the sad result is THIS CD. Do youself a favor, secure the Vinyl Original and burn your own CD. "You'll be glad you did." (...) I'd sell you my CD but it was so sorry, I couldn't sell it, I GAVE it away.

4 out of 5 stars Not the original LP program... where's Chico?.......2001-11-26

I take a star off just because those who have owned the original JINGLE BELL JAZZ on CBS (w/ the taxicabs by the snowy street corner shown on the cover) may be disappointed to discover that the CD issue does not include several cuts from the old album. To make room for new cuts by Dexter Gordon, McCoy Tyner, Arthur Blythe, the Heath Brothers, Paquito D'Rivera, and Wynton Marsalis, the label left out Chico Hamilton's wonderful "Winter Wonderland," Paul Horn's "We Three Kings," The Manhattan Jazz All-Stars' "If I Were a Bell," and Marlowe Morris' "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree."

Nothing against Dex, McCoy, and the Heath Brothers, but the absence of the Hamilton and Horn cuts in particular are a real loss to the collection. Chico's arrangement of "Winter Wonderland" perfectly captures that hushed, peaceful feeling you get when walking along a snowy hillside on a cold, clear night. It's beautiful, and I can hardly imagine going through the season without hearing it. Why is it missing here?? The track time on this CD is just short of 62 minutes; Columbia should have had room at least to keep Hamilton and Horn. And if it meant trimming "Blue Xmas" or Wynton (he has his own Christmas album, anyway) to make room for "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"--so be it!

Anyway, what's here is still pretty nice. If you got this, JINGLE BELL JAM on Rhino, and Ellington's THREE SUITES (featuring his arrangement of "The Nutcracker Suite"), you'd have an excellent selection of Holiday Jazz. I hope that Columbia will reissue an expanded version of this album, with Chico Hamilton, soon. Meanwhile, look through cassette racks and used LP bins, and the original set might turn up.

George Shearing's quintet work is instantly recognizable. His use of guitar (Reg Schwager) and vibes (Don Thompson) closely following the gently swinging lead of his piano work has become a signature. On Christmas, the Shearing Quintet (here rounded out by the bass of Neil Swainson and the drums of Dennis Mackrel) slip effortlessly over the likes of "White Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," and "Let It Snow" with a breezy, light touch. With tasteful solos that extend off the main melody and into more heady waters, Christmas is an entirely enjoyable release and perfect party music. For serious listening, this disc also boasts a fantastic recording. --S. Duda

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not uniformly great, but several nice tracks........2002-04-27

I particularly enjoyed the Latin rhythms in "Ding Dong Merrily on High", the 5/4 "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" (although I'm very surprised Shearing's liner notes don't acknowledge the debt to Brubeck's "Take Five"), the reflective "Away in a Manger", and the casually swinging "Winter Wonderland". It's just good, solid jazz -- despite the seasonal tunes, it's worth listening to year round.

2 out of 5 stars Slightly Sour.......2001-12-27

It seems off key in many places. Not what one wants in Christmas
music. Not one of Shearing's better recordings in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars A very good holiday CD........2001-12-04

This holiday CD showcases Shearing's light touch. These songs definitely put you in a nice, mellow holiday mood. I really enjoyed the first track, " . . . Merrily on High," as well as "Donkey Carol" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (which smoothly incorporates Brubeck's famous "Take Five" intro). "Noel Nouvelet" is a serene, but melancholy tune, a la Guaraldi's take on "Greensleeves." If you like holiday music and nice jazz, you'll get both from this LP.

5 out of 5 stars Yuletide winner from Shearing.......2000-04-12

This album is a delight. Especially suitable for background music a Christmas dinner party. It's a nice departure from the tired yule favorites in that Shearing delightfully reintroduces us to the holiday chestnuts but does so with new arrangements and wonderful pairings of instruments. This is a must for your holiday music collection.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CHRISTMAS CD OUT THERE!.......2006-02-11

A Army buddy in Germany had this and I always loved it, but never could find it there, before I got shipped out. When I got back from Vietnam I drove clear to Denver to buy the LP. I thought it was the best Christmas record I had ever heard. I think there are two cd's out now, so get them both, you won't be sorry! I gave them to my sons also.

5 out of 5 stars #1 Christmas guitar recording.......2005-11-01

Finally Charlie Byrd's solo guitar carols are on CD! I had the LP and it inspired me to learn to play carols on my guitar. There are many solo guitar Christmas recordings, but this is the best--in fact, one of the best Christmas music recording, period! It sounds like someone's sitting in the corner, quietly playing. Though Byrd is known for jazz & bossa nova, he plays it straight, without fancy ornamentation. I heard Byrd in Annapolis years ago, and he was an outstanding musician. This is simply a wonderful recording.

5 out of 5 stars El Tambor Exije su Respeto.......2000-03-11

Regardless of what the pop charts publish or the music industry wants consumers to believe, this CD is simply THE BEST RECORDING OF 1998 within SALSA & LATIN JAZZ.... PERIOD. The perfect fusion between Blues, Funk, Songo, Descarga, Danzón, Danza & Salsa is exceptional. All of the record is a knockout, and in addition, A MUSICAL BREAKTHROUGH for our music in this era. "Mulato Rumbero's" compelling rythm reminds salseros of the rage displayed only by Batacumbele; 'Goza Conmigo' manages to capture the listeners attention immediately and within a steady crescendo takes the tune to a fantastic climax; 'Décima en Blues' is a historic innovation, and the record just goes on and on. Jerry (EL VARON, no el otro) demonstrates that he is probably the most gifted singer in the Salsa-Latin Jazz scene today, and his work is a clear reminder that our music is still alive. It is also one of the most honest recordings of the 90's decade... el tambor exije su respeto.

The first six tracks of this release could've been subtitled "A Twist of Christmas," for they bear the indelible stamp of guitarist-producer Lee Ritenour and his A Twist of Marley. In fact, his Brazilian take on "Silent Night," with singer Al Jarreau, sounds like an arrangement worked straight out of Ritenour's A Twist of Jobim sessions. Even with guitarists Joyce Cooling and Marc Antoine, his presence is noticeable.

The other half of the album finds most of the artists doing their own thing, the best of which is the funky groove saxophonist Richard Elliot and keyboardist and co-arranger Jeff Lorber lay over "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Like a few of the other tunes however, the production suffers from the frightening trend of producers and/or record companies fading tracks prematurely in an obvious effort to appease smooth-jazz radio. It should be noted that the Diana Krall track was previously released on a holiday EP three years ago. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Jazz.......2007-01-14

We have always enjoyed the GRP Christmas recordings and were equally pleased with this work. The contemporary artists featured are able to combined the essence of the music style with the traditional quality of the holiday season.

3 out of 5 stars It Certainly is Pleasant Enough.......2001-12-12

I agree with the editorial that a few of the tracks of this release indeed should be subtitled "A Twist of Christmas," because they are straight out of the Lee Ritenour and his "A Twist of" Series mold. In fact, the cuts "Silent Night," with Al Jarreau, and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" featuring Will Downing (who manages to sound bored out of his mind here) are just a couple of tunes that sound like outtakes from the aforementioned sessions.

Joyce Cooling's rendition of "The Christmas Song" is quite unique however, as are some of the other cuts including Richard Elliot's "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".

Since this is a "Smooth Jazz" CD, the cuts are short and to the point (read: radio friendly?) although I don't think you'll be hearing the very jazzy Joe Sample version of "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", David Benoit's "The First Noel" anytime soon or, for that matter, Dave Grusin's out of place "Suite de Nuestra Navidad". Now that I think about it, this disc at times tries too hard to have a Latin flavor.

Overall, this disc leaves you saying "it certainly is pleasant enough", because you realize that you have heard better Jazz Christmas CDs.

Happy Holidays to all....

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to your music collection!.......2001-12-01

I was unaware of this disc until I read about it in the December issue of Ebony magazine. It is so soothing and relaxing and a great way to experience the talents of artists such as: Lee Rittenour, Al Jarreau, Wil Downing and Joe Sample. Great music to bake and trim the tree by.

As a general rule, Christmas albums aren't the first place one looks for innovation. This record, released in 1981, may be the exception to that rule. Here's a wide-ranging, creative, and fun-to- listen-to compilation packed with interesting takes on the time-worn holiday chestnuts. Dig Wynton Marsalis's Quintet going off the map on "We Three Kings of Orient Are." Alto saxist Paquito D'Rivera and bassist John Miller turn in a remarkable duet version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" while McCoy Tyner's solo version of "I'll be Home for Christmas" is simply beautiful. Consider Dexter Gordon's take on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" an early gift. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars Christmas music for every day of the year!.......2003-02-04

I'm a jazz neophyte and probably always will be, but this is a great album. The old standards are given new life by true legends (including a very young Wynton Marsalis). You'll want to play it all year 'round...

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly serious Jazz in a Christmas mode.......1998-12-01

Buying Christmas albums is always a crap shoot, and if you like jazz, as I do, it's doubly perilous. I bought this album back in the '80s when it was first issued on vinyl, and I'm amazed that I still play it around the holidays after all these years. The main thing is that these renditions aren't treacly or contrived or sentimental -- as you might guess from the artists involved, they're serious, entertaining, sometimes funky takes on familiar standards ... something jazz has always handled well. (I'll never forget the first time I heard a jazz rendition of the Flintstones' TV theme song, but that's another story.) My hands-down favorite is Paquito D'Rivera and John Miller's duet of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". It's as spare as any jazz composition I've ever heard (and not especially long, either) but also one of the most unexpectedly moving and soulful. While it departs from the original music for some typical jazz improvisation, with Miller rumbling through a brief opening solo that betrays nothing at all of the "Gentlemen" to come, the full performance manages somehow to respect the solemn melody -- even the asceticism -- of the English carol. Which is quite an achievement, in its own weird little way.

5 out of 5 stars A jazzy soul Christmas.......2006-12-27

I have plenty of Christmas music, more than I can usually play during the season but this one I never can do without. If you like jazz in the smooth jazz vein, soulful renditions of classics, improvised interpretations, than you'll be in heaven with this disc. There are several tracks that wouldn't be Christmas without hearing every year.Don Grusin leads the way with memorable tracks with his choir infused version of "Angels We Have Heard On High." The melodic yet innovative "The First Noel" by George Howard is reminiscent of John Coltrane in his phrasing at times, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Spyro Gyra is a rocking jumping good time, Arturo Sandoval sheds his latin jazz image for a brief moment on Bb trumpet and piccolo trumpet for a classical music introduction that soon transcends into blistering jazz solos than back into classical melodies on "O Come All Ye Faithful," the soulful voices of Carl Anderson and Patti Austin respectively on "O Holy Night" and "Christmas Time is Here" give the disc part of it's R&B edge. The absolute most sublime songs you can ever hear during the season are on this disc. You must hear "I Wonder as I Wander" by the New York Voices which mesh so beautifully with jazz arrangements and horns that will knock your socks off. Another soulful track is "Let There Be Peace on Earth" by Voyceboxing which features some remarkable female singing. The disc closes out with an amazing performance on harp by Deborah Henson- Conant who gives a Middle Eastern meets Western sensibilities to the otherworldly "We Three Kings of Orient Are." Great music for the holidays that you will enjoy year after year as I have since the early 90's.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2003-12-25

No compilation on the market any better than this! I'd buy THIS cd for Spyro Gyra's "I'll Be Home For Christmas" alone!
All 3 GRP CDs are great. And if you can get your hands on it, try a compilation CD titled "Jazzy Wonderland"

I wrote a general review of the GRP Christmas Collections CD's on the vol. I page. My faves on this one are Blue Christmas , which is a new song to me, and Christmas Time is Here. There's also fresh, jazzy treatments of standards. I Wonder as I Wander really comes alive. Highly recommend this CD and the other two volumes.
