4 out of 5 stars A stroll down memory lane.......2007-07-15

We bought this CD to play at a family reunion honoring my wife's 91-year-old mother, an 87-year-old uncle and two aunts of the same generation. The tunes brought back a lot of memories.

5 out of 5 stars Super collection.......2007-03-18

All the best of the best original artists. Brings back a lot of memories. Sound and selection not to be equaled. No need of another collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Is this new version as good as the original?.......2003-10-14

Although this new CD has the sound and spunk of the Nashville Brass. I think the original tunes were the best. Reissues of the original LPs on CD are currently available at nashvillebrass.com.

3 out of 5 stars Sentimentalists read this.......2000-06-27

Although the quality of the CD and Danny's renditions are enjoyable, do not expect the same cuts you heard 20 years ago -- my entire purpose in buying the CD was "Wabash Cannon Ball", which I enjoyed with my now deceased father. Unfortunately, the band's new mix, although expertly done, is entirely different, and in my opinion not nearly as good. Why the need to improve on perfection? Truly unfortunate and a bit frustrating -- perhaps I'll peruse the old LP's ...

5 out of 5 stars excellent!! too bad limited supply of titles need more.......1999-08-11

Always a pleasure putting Danny Davis' music on my sound system. I have 2 CD's and would love to pur- chase everything he has recorded in a CD format.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT to again hear the sounds of the Nashville Brass.......1999-07-22

Hopefully this company will re-release more sounds of the Nashville Brass. So difficult to find the old vinyl. This CD brings back some delightful memories when I played the group as an on-air DJ. At the price, it's a steal and a PLUS addiditon to your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Another good CD from Edmundo Ros .......2007-04-09

Edmundo Ros has a wonderful easy listening style that is the best.

Edmundo Ros and his Rumba Band was the talk of the town in London in the 1940s, 1950's and 1960s when he operated the The "Edmundo Ros Dinner and Supper Club" and had shows on the BBC.

He was one of the first to record the popular tunes of the day and Broadway songs in the latin style and rhythms.

We keep on trying to find CD of his previously released LP's. They are a treasure.

4 out of 5 stars That Latin Sound ~ Edmundo Ros & Orchestra.......2006-03-01

I bought this CD out of nostalgia in wanting to hear Edmundo Ros playing again. The music selection includes some of the very popular latin music in the forties and fifties. Songs like Brazil and La Paloma you can never be tired of and can admit that they are still well played and recorded.

All the music are played in the famous Edmundo Ros easy listening style. I still remember in the fifies the radio would feature Edmundo Ros every Sunday for you to enjoy with your beer or gin and tonic.

In those days most of the popular latin rhythm were rhumbas, boleros and sambas. Cha chas and Mambos were just starting to be popular.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some of Jo's best available for the first time on cd.......2000-01-27

Jo Stafford's recording of "Early Autumn", the "B" side of her hit "Jambalaya" on the original 78 r.p.m., was the first song I ever heard sung by this great artist. The song's range lays right in the heart of her voice, which is at its richest, and her phrasing and tuning are sheer perfection (as any fan knows, her phrasing and tuning are always perfect). This recording made me a Jo Stafford fan for life (even before hearing any of her many other wonderful recordings) and I still can never listen to it just once. Now Corinthian has made it available for the first time on cd, along with some of her best "big band" recordings from the 1950's, in some instances recreating in stereo some of her earlier hits with Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, the Pied Pipers, and Johnny Mercer.

5 out of 5 stars Jo never sounded so wonderful..........1999-10-21

Jo Stafford is backed here by Paul Weston's(her hubby)swingin' orchestra, Jo sounds thrilled and delighted to be backed by a big band(it's so nice to hear her without corny backgound singers) arranged and conducted superbly by Paul Weston(former Glenn Miller & Dinah Shore arranger). Highlights are a the awesome "Old Devil Moon" which is given difinitive treatment as well as a sprkling "Love For Sale." The only Stafford LP that's better then this is "Jo+Jazz"(she recorded with Ben Webster) however this is a strong set and very jazz oriented. Recomennded highly!

5 out of 5 stars Great album, very jazzy..........1999-10-01

One of Stafford's jazziest sets(With the acception of the materpiece Jo+Jazz)is very good. Highlights include Love For Sale and Old Devil Moon. Spectacular. Recommended to any jazz vocal lover.

1 out of 5 stars THIS HAS TO BE A WASTED EFFORT BY JO STAFFORD........1999-03-15

I HAVE MANY JO STAFFORD CDS AND THIS HAS TO BE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL AS FAR AS HER OTHER CDS GO. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE ARRANGEMENTS DIDN'T WORK OUT. SOMEIMES IT HARD TO COME UP WITH THE RIGHT MIX.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to make a Jo Stafford fan out of you.......1999-01-20

Jo Stafford takes pop standards, mixes the classic "Big Band" sound with a naughty jazz sound and brings these standards to a whole new level in this collection. The major highlight of this CD is the wonderfully bawdy rendition of "Love For Sale". Miss Stafford's voice plays well against the solid arrangement. Other noteworthy highlights are "The One I Love" and "Whatcha Know Joe?", both done in a snazzy, jazzy, uptempo style. The Tommy Dorsey/Pied Pipers classic "Candy" is included, with a great arrangement that will have you imagining that it's the 1940's all over again. A very smooth version of the DeCastro Sisters song "Teach Me Tonight" adds to the splendid mix. This CD is guaranteed to bring a whole new generation of Jo Stafford fans. The perfect blending of Miss Stafford's voice with the carefully crafted arrangements is an experience not to be missed. You don't have to be born pre-WWII to enjoy this - I was born WELL AFTER the end of the war, and this has become one of my favorite all-time CDs.

5 out of 5 stars It's De-Lovely allright!!.......2005-10-16

I will admit the Les Elgart band was known for Bandstand Boogie, the theme song for American Bandstand for many years. He showcases more of his wonderful work with It's DeLovely, Scotch Hop, and my favorite "I Concentrate On You". You can't go wrong with a collection like this!!!

5 out of 5 stars A "De-lovely" Twofer.......2004-02-10

Both of these albums have been among my favorites. Noted songs are "Cherokee", "When I Take My Sugar To Tea", It's De-loveley","Off Shore", "Scotch Hop", and "I Concentrate On You". If you like the Elgart touch to music, you need this twofer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Elgart recordings from way back when!.......2007-07-08

As many of you know Les Elgart was the person behind the successful "Bandstand Boogie" for "American Bandstand". His band showed off their talents in this two-fer CD set from albums released in 1960. Good material and sounds so clear today on compact disc. I can not get enough of the Mar-Cha-Cha in the Designs for Dancing portion of the C.D. Great rhythm for some of Elgart's new fans!!

5 out of 5 stars Les Elgart is tops if you love big bands!.......2007-04-29

This may take you down memory lane, but I enjoy listening to the big bands. I loved Glenn Miller and the others, but Les Elgart has a big band style of his own. As a young kid, I played in the school band myself. I purchased most of his albums in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When I saw the Elgart CDs offered on Amazon, I purchased four of my favorite Elgart CDs of his past music albums. It's amazing how much better CD music is to the old albums and his music is no exception.

Most of you will recognize one of Les Elgart's popular songs played on Dick Clark's old bandstand TV show called "Bandstand Boogie."

Bottom line is if you like big bands, try Les Elgart!

The "Riddle sound" was a launching pad for the most popular singers of the 1950s and early 60s--Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, and Nat "King" Cole. Like the Eisenhower era from whence it came, Riddle's arrangements were brash but breezy, brimming with an amiable optimism and sense of adventure. Though they were considered music for "swingers," they remained a bit square and sweetly string driven for maximum commercial viability. On Route 66, with horn solos replacing the vocal parts, Riddle's charts fit nicely with the middlebrow savoir faire of Erich Kunzel's Cincinnati Pops. Shiny melodies like "Night and Day" and "Let's Face the Music and Dance" billow and compress with good-natured gusto, while Riddle's dynamic treatments of "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Get Happy" are given their full range of expression. Listeners familiar with the material will inevitably miss the singers (particularly Sinatra on "Summer Wind"), but the horns nearly compensate, led by former Woody Herman trombonist Jim Pugh and supple tenor saxophonist Ken Peplowski. Finally, Will Friedwald's liner notes eloquently state the case for Riddle's mostly unsung artistry. --Britt Robson

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I think Nelson would be proud of this cd.......2001-10-26

When I read of this project, I was very excited about buying this cd and listening to an updated version of the Nelson Riddle sound. I must say that I have not been disappointed. I feel like who ever did the re-arranging did a good job of remaing as close as possible to Nelsons' sound.

I feel like Nelson, where ever he might be, is looking down with a giant smile on his face and saying BRAVO, you did a good job in paying a tribute to me and my music. THANKS A MILLION!

Recommendation: Any fan of Nelsons' will have to have this cd, so go on and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars All Star Performance.......2001-02-28

The Cincinnati Pops provides a wonderful presentaion of Nelson Riddle's work. If you are desiring a "Frank Sinatra" style of arranging you'll probably be disappointed; however, if you seek a large orchestra's presentation on Riddle's most popular works, you'll love it. I especially enjoy listening to it while working. Makes the work day seem a whole lot brighter!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Finger snapping, hum along fun.......2000-06-01

Kunzel and Cincinnati Pops have made a terrific CD. They have put an new twist on the swing music of Nelson Riddle, using instrumentals in place of the vocals. I have listened to this one over and over. This is a fun CD.

1 out of 5 stars How to murder the Riddle SOund.......2000-05-30

This is probably the worst example of an orchestral re-work of a popular arranger. In fact, it's probably the worst CD I have ever bought. Clearly no one on the arrangement staff, nor Kunzel, have ever heard or understood Nelson Riddle's charts, licks or vibe. It's an embarrasement to Telarc and they should pull it from their catalogue. Sorry guys, but this is really awfull!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific CD.......2006-11-03

A terrific CD, it rocks! This IS a Big Band album, which by its very nature is a very traditional sound, and this album is that. But it is also a modern and cutting edge jazz recording with some very tight vocals. Quite frankly, it's just a lot of fun to which to listen.
